Cat: OM 48. Rel: 01 Apr 22
  1. Cold Feet (4:40)
  2. Agent Kink (4:14)
  3. Fragments Of A Marching Stone (3:55)
  4. Lazy Soldier (feat Brendan Cleary) (5:22)
  5. All Diving Lucid Blues (5:00)
Review: Rudolf Abramov describe their sound as 'a response to a seemingly endless conflict about disgust, acceptance and love.' The Berlin-based duo are certainly pretty hard to define, as is proven on this five track outing that veers from something close to the Brothers From Different Mothers sound, to lo-fi Irish punk folk. And if that's not grabbed your attention, we don't know what ever could. Lazy Soldier', with words spoken by Brendan Cleary and an overwhelming feeling of counter culture to its simple stomped drums, whooshing synths, and bass guitar underpinning the speech. And 'Cold Feet' opens the scoring with a broken, twisted, psychedelic workout somewhere between 1970s rock and contemporary dancefloors. Better yet, Losing Perspective is so much more besides, too.

Agip (Blue Cover Edition)
Cat: FLIES 4528R. Rel: 07 Apr 22
  1. Agip (2:44)
  2. Astrotensione (1:34)
  3. Telefono Giallo (1:36)
Review: After much clamour from fans, Four Flies has managed to put together a reissue of this golden bit of sunny Balearic funk. The special 7" marked Azzuro's debut on the label and takes inspiration from the 80s Library scene as much as gentle sunset dances on the Med. It manages to sound retro yet future, with its analogue synth waves and jazz-funk rhythms, catchy pop hooks and warm grooves. After the dance-y opener 'Agip,' comes a more zoned out and horizontal groove with 'Telefono Giallo' while 'Astrotensione' closes on another celestial ambient vibe.

  5. Begin Again (Luke Hess remix) (5:45)
Review: When it comes to floor-filling tracks that balance smart drum programming with pure melodic bliss, you can always rely on John Beltran to deliver. The five track EP contains masterful ambient pieces with a Detroit/Chicago analog house vibe bringing a warm and psychedelic feel. He joins the label's third release with a brilliant chill-out EP entitled 'The Peninsula', united by another Detroit legend Luke Hess, bringing his traditional 303 upbeat sound remixing 'Begin Again'. Visual artist Alona Rodeh also joins the release showcasing her stunning High-Vis (Future, Black) which featured in her first solo exhibition at the Christine Konig Galerie in Vienna last year.

  6. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (4:02)
Review: Tender-voiced crooner James Blacke dropped this EP of cover songs back in December 2020, but in time for Record Store Day it now gets a wax reissue. Lovers of sad songs rejoined at their mopey here tackling some of these tunes from artists such as Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish, and Beyonce. "It's been a joy to discover new music and new ways of playing songs I've already heard," he said at the time and it's just as nice for us to hear him working with different than usual source material.

Cascate Emozionali: Volume One
  1. Cascades (4:19)
  2. Pulsazioni (4:46)
Review: Cascate Emozionali comes to Early Sounds in a flurry of Italian library music splendour, all studio session funk and high-end synth scapes for the discerning groover. Keeping things compact on a 7", this single easily stands up to any classic deep digs from the golden age of library music in the 70s and 80s. There are thrumming arps, slinky basslines, funky clavi and plenty more, all rendered in honey-coated tones that suggest serious care and vintage gear in the signal chain. Early Sounds excel at these kinds of records, and any lover of library music will want to add this nugget to their archives.

Agent Sentimental
  1. Agent Sentimental (4:03)
  2. Postcard From Bangladesh (4:09)
Review: Funk fans will of course know that The Vicious Seeds fail from St. Petersburg and for a while now they have been turning out 45s that mix up raw cinematic grooves and deep funk instrumentals. For this newest 7" they sign up vibraphonist Pavel Chiznik who brings with him plenty of flair on top of the well versed rhythm section. These two cuts explore some airy, uplifting and summery jazz vibes a la Roy Ayers with dope beats and plenty of sample-friendly drumbreaks. Add in a load of funky basslines, some carefully psyched-out guitars and lush vibes and you have a vital little 45rpm.

  2. Gina Lollobrigida (Zero Call remix) (5:36)
  3. Gina Lollobrigida (Nabta remix) (4:22)
  4. Anni Fa (5:38)
Review: It's been a minute since we last heard something new from Luca Venezia's Curses! Project. In stark contrast to his work as Drop The Lime, Curses! is betrothed to minimal wave melancholy, and after he put together the awesome Next Wave Acid Punx compilation for Eskimo last year we finally have an outright new EP on Oraculo. Lead track 'Gina Lollobrigida' is a darkly romantic thrummer with washed out vocals from Cici, which then gets suitably ghoulish, club-ready remixes from Zero Call and Nabta. Venezia then finishes things off with 'Anni Fa', a steely piece of lo-fi wave with chilling piano and the toughest of snares.

Tiger's Eye
  1. Tiger's Eye (11:38)
  2. Orgonite (6:00)
  3. Orgonite (Riding The Waves) (6:21)
Review: Berlin's Cocktail d'Amore and Tokyo's Ene Records have come together once again to present the music of Solidair. The duo of Cocktail alumni Luigi Di Venere and Jules Etienne present three tracks aimed to induce a dance floor hypnosis. Orgonite (Riding the Waves) does just that, a slow build awash in the ebb and flow of acid tinges, just enough to wet your whistle on a Saturday night. The original mix keeps the skeletal support but throws in a life preserver of 8 bit gaming synthesis. Frisky arps call and respond to each other before making way for sinewy pads to lift off. Tiger's Eye sets itself onto cruising speed incorporating elements of late 90's acid techno with the sleek and smooth clubbing aesthetics of modern day Berlin.

La Poliziotta (Soundtrack)
  1. Rhythm & Sex (1:58)
  2. Step By Step (2:50)
Review: We've been served a good banquet of dance reissues from classic Italian film soundtracks of late, and Gianni Ferrio's 'La Poliziotta' is one of the best of the bunch. Combining two choice cuts from mysterious film director Stefano Vanzina's aka. Steno's sexy detective film 'La Poliziotta', this 7" reissue is a finger-clicking, jazz-swinging foray through instrumental funk.

  1. Proxima B (4:47)
  2. Antena (4:59)
  3. Note Repeat (5:19)
  4. Norc (5:18)
Review: Trauma Collective returns to shock your system on their fifth release, which comes courtesy of Spain's Rafael M. Espinosa aka Geistform. The Barcelona-based artist, also known for his exploits under the Univac alias, has crafted a singular style that exists at the interzone of IDM, digital noise and electro and having earned him releases on Pi Electronics, Femur and Hands Productions in recent years.

Espinosa executes four programs in sonic warfare on the Antena EP, all sounding akin to complex bitstream amplification. A multi-level barrage of frequencies play offense on opening cut "Proxima B", which sets the theme for more widescreen pulsations that gash the senses, as heard on the syntax error of "Note Repeat" and building up to a climax on the monochromatic soundstage of "Norc" - a jagged and angular exploration in bass artefacts and static redux.

Since unleashing the austere techno of Birmingham legend Mick Harris (as Monrella) and hometown hero Kwartz on unsuspecting ears, the Madrid-based collective has now ventured into more experimental spheres, as heard on the off-kilter mentalism of ASC's Loop Research and the brooding atmosphere of Makunaimadama's limited cassette release last year. Antena is the logical progression for the label's next chapter, where it continues to push the threshold of electronic music's outer limits.

The Third Summer Of Love
Cat: STR 7059. Rel: 28 Mar 22
  1. The Third Summer Of Love (6:03)
  2. Arabesque (5:06)
Review: "And it was at this point that the experts began to admit that they'd made a mistake. That five two eight was not the frequency of love, was not the heavenly frequency, but was the frequency of death, was the frequency of the sun moving towards the abyss. That we'd all been listening to things in reverse, as in a mirror, and that the third summer of love was the summer of blood. And it was at that point, when the end was in sight, that I decided to turn off the radio." Hiele Kinsella delivers two tracks of unapologetically avant-garde stuff, opening with the spoken word, electronica, unnerving poetics and deeply atmospheric drones of its title number. Whirs, refrains, and unsettling string spirals surround the listener, abstract words packed with symbolism boring a hole directly to the centre of your soul. Flip it to find the unarguably nice and jarringly inviting, hushed piano solo of 'Arabesque'. Weird and wonderful stuff.

Ombra INTL 021: Dimensional Rejuvenation
  1. HLM - "En Ecailles" (4:04)
  2. Tony Y Not - "How About Lily" (6:21)
  3. Kimshies - "12 Windows" (4:22)
  4. Rees - "Lucifer's Tango" (5:25)
  5. Endrik Schroeder - "Rainy Days" (5:48)
Review: Berlin-based Ombra International love all things post-punk and Italo disco, and they continue to represent that fusion in style on their 21st release. First up HLM brings a heavy wash of synths to 'En Ecailles' before Tony Y Not get into a twanging new wave vibe on 'How About Lily'. Kimshies has a sleazier sound to offer up, while Rees pushes all manner of vintage arpeggios at the behest of 'Lucifer's Tango'. That leaves it to Endrik Schroeder to finish the set with the atmospheric 'Rainy Days', a perfect tribute to washed out 80s post-punk with a strong dose of disco pumping in its veins.

Calypso Cult II
Calypso Cult II (limited translucent brown marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: MC 059. Rel: 29 Mar 22
  1. Thomass Jackson - "Big Plastic Room" (9:01)
  2. Thomass Jackson - "Slow Train" (7:15)
  3. Inigo Vontier - "Jungle Tungle" (6:58)
  4. Inigo Vontier - "Hipocampos" (5:38)
Review: When it comes to heavy chug, Multi Culti has always known exactly where to strike to make the most memorable or - more accurately - inescapable impact. Thomas Jackson's 'Slow Train' is just the latest case in point, then, drawing dancers and listeners alike in with its warm-hued, hypnotic synth lines, stabs and warbles in all the right places to ensure that while not that much happens, you'll be stomping about like everything was going on at once. Far from a one-track-wonder, Calypso Cult II is the label setting out all its stalls with aplomb. 'Jungle Tungle' is a strange, somewhat shrill, constantly building and percussively dominated workout that's tough and yet not actually that tough. 'Big Plastic Room' is peak time acid meets Kraut oddness, while 'Hipocampos' brings things to a beautiful close with beguiling, downtempo sludge.

  3. Ste Spandex - "Edit 2" (2021 Re-Pop) (5:54)
  4. Ernesto Harmon - "Search For" (6:31)
Review: Manchester's Red Laser Records returns with a four track various artists EP curated by label chief Il Bosco. 12 features Mark Wilkinson aka Kid Machine returns to the label with the neon-lit '80s mood of "Only Machines Allowed" going for that Axel Foley vibe, followed by Count Van Delicious doing his best impression of the Centre Neptune man on "I Wonder How Flemming Dalum Is Doing?". Over on the flip, things get pretty Balearic on Ste Spandex's "Edit 2" (2021 Re-Pop) and Ernesto Harmon gets stuck into some electro beat synthpop on the infectious "Search For".

Review: Veteran Irish producer Lerosa is back with a new one this week on local imprint Lunar Disko. The Trust EP features six terrific tracks all delivered in his singular style. On the A side, it opens up with the experimental synth intro 'Who Can You Trust', followed by the moody, almost John Carpenter-ish soundtrack vibe of "Revelations' and 'Reborn'. On the flip over, he heads to Detroit on the sci-fi electro of "Condition 1" and the acidified computer funk of 'Slow Bear'.

  3. Visited By Astronauts (SHERELLE Had A Groove remix) (4:32)
  4. Echo Paths - Ebb & Flow (6:25)
Review: Matt Cutler has made many great records as Lone, with recent album Always Inside Your Head being particularly impressive. This similarly laudable EP offers fresh, alternative takes on album tracks. The headline attraction is arguably SHERELLE's B-side opening take on 'Visited By Astronauts', a wonderfully dancefloor-centric fusion of pulsing ambient chords, bittersweet lead lines and skewed D&B beats. Predictably, Cutler hits the spot on each of his three reworks too.
