Review: 44th Move is a project from talented pianist Alfa Mist and Richard Spaven, two of the brightest lights in London's current jazz scene revival. "We shared a lot of the same influences [so] we got to writing straight away" they say of their natural pairing. The music they come up with is lush, majestic, heart swelling, with broken beats and tender pianos. simmering chords and melancholic moods all permeating each of the sublime tracks. 'Hope' is a standout for its florid trumpet playing and 'Broken' is a real dancer for floors that know.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record ever so slightly warped with very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working order***

As visitors to his website will likely note after a quick scroll, "John Herndon is a drummer, music producer, and founding member of the group Tortoise." He's also credited with work under the flags Isotope 217, Five Style, Starlicker, Exploding Star Orchestra, Pulsar Quartet, not to mention A Grape Dope - just one of the Los Angeline's identities. And certainly one of the most musically forward thinking.

For any newcomers in the room, let's just say AGD has laid out more head-nodding beats than most of us have had hot dinners, setting benchmark after benchmark for hip hop instrumentals with jazz and electronic trappings. Here remixed by five equally astute names - Laetitia Sadier, Four Tet, Jeff Parker and Roberto Carlos Lange (no relation to the footballing titan, sadly) - this is maybe not the most definitive introduction to Herndon, but it's a mighty fine release packing plenty of variety and depth nonetheless

Review: On the Love Affair EP, Geneva-based producers Androo & Bony Fly have composed six tracks that strike the balance between sound experimentation and dancefloor orientation. The results of their research stemmed from a shared passion for dub, dancehall and its infinite variations, combined with a particular attention to subtle and harmonious sound textures. From the glacial and cavernous delay exercises so gloriously displayed on 'Xoxo Dub', to the deeply meditative tribal rhythms of 'Dancehall Science' (interlude mix) to the off-kilter club bounce of 'As A Sign" and ending with the lo-fi riddims of 'Classic (Beaucoup) Trop Classic' (radio dub mix). A solid effort.

I Will Survive (7" + insert)
Cat: SC 433LP. Rel: 29 Mar 21
  1. I Will Survive (4:40)
  2. RNC 2020 (3:13)
Review: RECOMMENDED
The most surprising thing about this staggering 7" is the fact the artist formerly known as Anthony Hegarty hasn't released 'I Will Survive' before. Gloria Gaynor's testament to the strength of the human spirit, and particularly the resilience people call upon when facing a broken heart, has long been an anthem of global queer and counterculture. Anonhi, either as lead singer of rightly lauded Anthony & The Johnsons, or as latter day soloist, is an icon of those same scenes, laying claim to being the only transgender person ever nominated for an Academy Award ('Manta Ray', from the movie Racing Extinction).

The results are everything we could have hoped for, rethinking the disco anthem as an acoustic number equal parts teary-eyed pride and sorrow, Anonhi's famous baritone crying out over strings and guitars. Backed with the frenzied distorted riffs and rage of 'RNC 2020', it's a formidable release.

Review: Now we're really talking. Asymetric80's Chaos Theory feels like you're standing on the edge of, or possible running away from, The End of Days. A particularly punchy, driving shot of menacing electro administered straight to the adrenal gland, it's the twisted and dark science fiction future you've always wanted to dance and get sweaty in, but probably never dared buy a ticket for.

Five tracks of proper over-bite worthy floor-filling stuff, it's a hard-edged marriage of Italo, industrial, rave and something else that gives it a certain tech noir feeling. At its most euphoric, 'So The Echo' could almost remind some of dark techno-trance heydays gone by, a storming assault of sonic lasers and forward momentum. At its most evil, the breaks and refrains of 'Destroyed System', with everything between a similar joy to behold.

Review: Milan-based artist Atoloi steps up to take care of the small but beautifully formed Sure Thing label's third release, Inflorescenze. He opts for a meditative work "that reflects upon the tension that arises from polarity: nature and the city-bound sphere of clubbing, weight and levity, the internal world of the artist and his external environment." It results in a record that is in constant flux, swelling and recessing, rising and falling, pulling you in and pushing you away from the sinewy synth lines and distant sounds of thunder or icy drums and dubs undercurrents.

Review: Boris Barksdale's Eternal Remorse originally saw the light of day on Portugese label Eye For An Eye as a digital release back in 2018, and now it's getting a vinyl pressing. A physical release feels appropriate for this pointedly dusty release, which leans in on synthwave influences to create a thoroughly dark and gnarly atmosphere. '5.0.5' steps out on a tough, dishevelled rhythm section, with seriously degraded synths falling apart behind the jackhammer drums. '7.0.8' takes the intensity up a notch, hitting with an industrial bite, while 'Sentier' channels even more of that Ministry-flavoured malaise with its disturbing yelps and screams. 'Sramota' has the hallmarks of a mid 80s bedroom beatdown from a blackened soul, 'Take Notes' delivers yet more pounding, percussive punishment, and 'Geezer' rounds things off with a bleak and troubled slab of EBM dragged from the underworld to stalk amongst all nightcrawlers and ne'er-do-wells.

  4. Victor Ziegler - "Nostalgic Aerobic" (5:24)
Review: Grenoble's Binary Digit (Dream Ticket/Opal Tapes) appears on a split EP here with Belgian debutant Victor Ziegler, to inaugurate new imprint Postal Code Records on From Berriat To Pitteurs (PCR001). On the A side, Binary Digit is in fine form on the wacky acid-jungle hybrid of '4020 Pitteurs FM' followed by the lo-fi chiptune electro of 'Ob_Break'. On the flip, Ziegler takes the rolling breakbeats of the '90s UK underground and merges them with the aesthetic of dreamy electronica of the time - namely on Warp or Rephlex - with the glassy-eyed and bittersweet epic 'Nostalgic Aerobic' which was easily the standout tune on this stellar EP. Keep your eye on Postal Code Records in 2021.

Review:
Furthur Electronix sub label Altered Sense presents a new release by Bot1500 aka Shinichi Kobayashi, who returns to the label family after 2019's English Beach EP. Fittingly titled 'Euphoria', across three versions we hear Kobayashi's impressive take on intelligent, Motor City inspired techno. The contemplative futurist soul of 'Euphoria 7' transforms on part 3, which really calls to mind the heyday of early '90s IDM on seminal imprints such as Warp and Peacefrog. On the flip, part 1 bridges the gap between the two previously heard versions, picking up the pace again but backed by a foggy lo-fi house rhythm. It proves to be the perfect backdrop for the track's melancholic yet bittersweet expression. Breathtaking.

Review: Emotional Response present something intriguing and oh so fresh from Cherrystones, who has most commonly been spotted recently lurking about labels like Bahnsteig 23, but in fact has a legacy reaching back to the late 90s. This new mini-album is reportedly the result of a pointed retreat to Scotland - a period of semi-isolation with minimal distractions from the serious business of analogue synths and reel-to-reel tape. There's a lot going on, from the slinky, boogie-licked groove of 'Amaziac' to the sludgy, wave tinted 'Rave Digger', but throughout the common theme is one of rough, upfront waveforms - maximal sounds with lashings of character, wielded with glee by an artist knee deep in their craft.

Review: London-based Texan via Spain, Chupacabras continues to ramp up his ice cold output with another clutch of neck-snappers. Raw analogue funk from start to finish, the EP takes off where his L.I.E.S EP left us as 'No End' kickstarts the collection of thumping electro and brutalist grooves with a Black Strobe-like bass wobble and tempestuous drums. It's backed up by the robotic motion and gritty sheen of 'Growing Pains', the b-boy style drums of 'Basic Programm' and the final heave-ho of the set: 'Down My Spine', an overdrive dark electro jam you could just as easily picture Dave Clarke playing it as you could DJ Stingray. Savage.

Review: On the fourth edition of Ride The Wave American synthwave, exquisite neue Deutsche welle and British post-punk are all well represented. The sound throughout this EP is dark but always somehow romantic, with pained vocals dragged out over the crips beats and rays of light and warmth coming from the synths. Carlo Onda's 'Viele Grusse Aus Yokohama' is particularly playful n its approach to noir-synth atmospheres and Karl Kave cooks up some real guitar angst on 'Atomlabor.' It's a hugely limited EP, with just 300 copies pressed on high quality solid green 180g vinyl.

Review: Given his success in recent years, it's hard to remember a time when few had heard of Brian Pinyero AKA DJ Python. That was certainly the case when he first released Dulce Compania, his debut album, back in 2017. The set was an undeniable success, not only establishing his name but also a trademark sound that combined intergalactic deep house sounds with drumbeats heavily influenced by a variety of global rhythms (most obviously reggaeton). If you missed out first time, it's worth grabbing this vinyl reissue. Highlights include vintage ambient house style shuffler 'Todo Era Azul (Siempre Dub)', atmospheric broken house workout 'Acostados' (where field recordings of distant traffic rise above fluttering synthesizer loops and delicately programmed percussion) and ultra-deep and positive closer 'Yo Ran (Do)'.

Review: Ute. Rec hits release number five with a concept record that takes inspiration from 70s sci-fi and off-planet adventures. The EP was written and produced "deep in the metropolis known as Okern at UTE HQ" by The Dosadi Experiments and after an atmospheric and filmic opening with the ambiance of 'Breaching The Hidden World' you really take off on 'Arrival.' It's slippery, deep, rolling techno that gets you in a mindful state and then 'Gowachin Rituals' brings some lush melody and interplanetary energy before the kick become heavier, darker and more driving on the fantastic closer 'Winds Of Tandaloor.'

Now it scores again with Horizons Sauvages, which was originally written for the exhibition of the same name by painter Marie-Laurence de Chauvingy de Blot. Both artists have a shared love of nature and the sound pallet here is just that. Organic, layered, endless, beautiful. Both pieces are meditative ones where new age music is reinvented with a less sentimental and cliched edge, and a more immersive and real world feel.

  1. Our Last Night (feat Mironas) (7:15)
  2. Different Versions Of Your Love (7:04)
Review: We are living in the post-Innervisions dance world, long after the dust has settled on the hype and hysteria drummed up both by the label itself, and tastemaking publications on its behalf at the turn of the last decade. But that doesn't mean for a second the imprint's quality control, and ear for exceptional deep, synthy dancefloor stuff has waned - it's just a case of trends moving on.

And when trends move on it usually improves what's left behind, en vogue often leading to an endless stream of great pretenders and tired replicas. Night Versions, the latest EP from Thessaloniki-based Greek producer Echonomist is a great case in point. Packing two tracks of coldwave-infused house, from the broken, trapped energy vibes of 'Our Last Night', to the dark twisted vocals of 'Different Versions of Your Love', it's all fresh enough to make you forget just how much we've heard from this camp before.

He works on minimalist and contemporary musical forms, with solo works in recent years having explored a fusion of electronic ?and acoustic sounds with melodic textures, colours and emotions. On his latest release titled Music For Xavier Veilhan, it features 'Music for Les Rayons (Sarus) (2016)' which was created for a sculpture by the named artist. It is defined by its blissful and hypnotic melody against a backdrop of glistening ambient drones. On the flip, we have a more cinematic sonic excursion in the form of "Music for Mutant Stage 8 (2017)" created for a film by Veilhan with Marie-Agnees Gillot & Dimitri Chamblas, which will captivate you with its delicate tapestry of chimes.

  3. Busta Busss (5:26)
  4. U & I (3:18)
Review: Enigmatic Bristol imprint Ghost Phone returns with its fourth edition of paranormal telecommunications. Whether it's G.Phone & M.Don responsible again, who knows? On Ghost Phone 004 we have the bass driven R&B soul power of 'Feelin'' followed by some heady and off-kilter minimal vibes to be enjoyed on 'Soul Seeker' with its stuttered female vocal adding to its hypnotic effect. On the flip, there's the deep dubstep of 'Busta Bass' adding to the variety featured on this release, and ending with the depressive beats of 'U & I'.

  2. Kepler438 (5:25)
  3. They Live (5:28)
  4. Hidden Dimension (4:38)
Review: Well Street continues to set out its stall within the realm of contemporary bassweight experimentation with this return to the fray from Ghost Warrior. Previously spotted on 31 Records, re:st and The Collection Artaud, Peter Ivanyi is the quintessential grey area producer, dealing in futuristic extrapolations of the D&B formula, where monochrome textures and dense dub atmospheres hover around needlepoint rhythms and ruthlessly controlled bass swells. With an icy demeanour offset by delicately deployed chords (at least on 'Kepler438', this is exquisitely executed, highly futuristic brain food for those who believe in D&B as much more than a raging soundtrack to a skank.

  1. Sirius City (5:03)
  2. UFO (4:38)
  3. Call Me, Acid (6:12)
  4. Stars (4:03)
Review: Following on from last year's impressive Redlight debut, Scott Hess is back on his Adeen label with another selection of warm and inventive house cuts splashed with colour and analogue wobbles precision-engineered to catch your ear. Lead track 'Sirius City' leans on a harmonically rich lead line and plenty of off-kilter wriggles to appeal to those who want some cheekiness in their tunes. 'UFO' sports a tasteful acid tweak running in between plush pads and snappy drums, while 'Call Me, Acid' plays around with telephone tropes to make a bleepy jam that will have the ID requests flying in. 'Stars' offers something sweeter to complete the set, spacing out the beats to leave the synths plenty of room to cavort around a celestial name-checking session for deep house dreamers.
