Bakeren (instrumental)/Rory's Sunrays
Bakeren (instrumental)/Rory's Sunrays (hand-numbered 7" limited to 300 copies in Juno exclusive branded sleeve)
Cat: MUKAT 092. Rel: 26 Feb 24
Bakeren (unreleased instrumental version) (4:06)
Rory's Sunrays (3:56)
Review: Mukatsuku are long-time friends with Norway's Espen Horne so it makes sense they have moved to issue a couple of instrumentals following on from the quickly sold out success of a limited 7" he dropped on Wah Wah 45's in late 2023. This hand-numbered 45 features 'Bakeren' which in vocal form was a big hit with Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles amongst others. On the flip is a version of Bergen Sunrays', here renamed 'Rory's Sunrays', and featuring some great organ work from London-based musician Rory More.

Get Up (1:25)

Slow Motion (2:14)
Review: Klaus Weiss was a German jazz drummer who left behind a rich legacy of library music, especially on the series of Sound Music albums for Golden Ring Records in the late 70s-early 80s. In the digging era, Weiss' impeccable grooves now fetch serious prices second hand, and so be thankful for the likes of Dynamite Cuts reaching over into the world of library music reissues to pull four perfect joints from unreachable realms back into the hands of real music fans. From low down nasty funk to space-age star gazing, Weiss packed a lot into these tracks, and now you can cop them on a sureshot 7".

Siegfried Schwab - "Feel It" (2:16)
Siegfried Schwab - "Getting High" (2:28)
Klaus Weiss - "Time For Rhythm" (2:03)
Peter Thomas - "Documentation" (1:51)
Review: Dynamite Cuts brings the heat once more with a second volume of their Sound Music 45s series. Siegfried Schwab takes care of the A-side with 'Getting High', a scorching funk workout with hard-worked guitar chords and precise percussion over lots of wah-wah effects. 'Feel It; flip the script with a superbly stripped-down jazz-funk lounge sound. Klaus Weiss then steps up on 'Time For Rhythm' with some loose, percussive funk beats that are raw and organic, then Peter Thomas closes down with 'Documentation', a more richly instrumental and multi-layered jazz-funk sound that conveys real grandeur.

Review: Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw's Black Pearl is a classic from 1973 that deserves the regular reissue treatment it enjoys. It is a cult classic bit of library music on De Wolfe that takes the form of a collection of orchestral funk pieces that are perfect examples of the dramatic music styles synonymous with the 70s. Some pieces are widescreen, string laced opuses with lavish 60s exotica influences while others are more moody and dramatic with thunderous drums and edgier strings.

Review: Two brothers recently reunited by their love of music, the Hermanos Gutierrez make beautiful instrumental Latin and Americana, tempered by the aesthetic of atmospheric Western movie soundtracks a-la Ennio Morricone and/or film director Sergio Leone. On their new album El Bueno Y El Malo, a give-and-take, equitable atmsphere - shared lovingly between two chordophonal kin - is established on every track. Soft, spatious and tinged with the analogous, skippy texture of the vinyl record, even the album's forays into pop structures ('La Verdad', 'Tres Hermanos') don't waver from their warmth, nor do they sacrifice an ounce of sweet listenability.

High Roller (5:24)
Big Slick (3:59)
Review: The Soul Surfers share their debut 7" on Broc Recordz, following a promising entree working with various raw funk and soul greats, including with Jack Nilovic on his 'Maze of Sounds' compilation, not to mention appearing on the first volume of the recent Two Tales For The Mind V/A. 'High Roller' and its counterpart 'Big Slick' are two large, roomy, instrumental sonic gateau slices, on which an outsized four-string occupies the front and centre of both mixes, to megalomaniac, almost gluttonous effect. All else follows naturally; plucks, snares and FX licks resound, as we're left to contemplate the ingenious front cover by Italian artist Riccardo Bettazzoni.

Review: Piero Umiliani is a cult electronic musician who released his greatest album 20 years ago on Easy Tempo. On it, Umiliani experimented in his Sound Work Shop studio on all sorts of analogue machines and now, decades later, his legacy lives on with this new record, L'Uomo Elettronico. It is made up of three previously unreleased tracks, plus rarities and hidden gems, all composed between 1972 and 1983 and remastered from the original analogue tapes. They show a lighter, more playful side to the artist with singing synths, hissing hi hats and snaking rhythms that make for fascinating listening.

Review: RECOMMENDED
If you're interested in this record then you're interested in this record. Even if this is your first encounter with Burroughs, it takes only a few lines to understand not only his command of language, but his ability to convey the despicable, maligned, dejected and disillusioned in truly evocative ways. If this isn't your first encounter with Burroughs, then this twisted revenge tale audio book comes with a back story that will make you fall in love with the author all over again.

First published in 1971, Ali's Smile was released as a one-sided LP in a run of 99 copies. It was sold with a hardback copy of the audio, and in the UK there was only one store you could buy it from - Brighton's Unicorn Bookshop. As far as we've been told, the owner was a guy called Bill Butler and was paying off costs from a previous obscenity trial. Boroughs gave him the rights to this recording.

Xenon (short Effects) (2:52)
Review: She's the Diva of the Diode, five-time Grammy Awards-nominee for Best New Age Album, and one of America's all-time top synthesising pioneers. If that doesn't tell you almost everything there is to know about Xenon then we're really not sure what will. Ciano is a sound designer, composer, and label executive whose 1970s output was her most commercially successful, but has never backed off from the release schedule, or lost her innovative abilities.

This addition to any Ciani fan's collection is very much everything she's about. Comprising just three tracks, or rather two short tunes and an interlude of just 45-seconds, the best way to describe this is an experiment in descending notes and noises, formed into patterns which slowly present forms of sonic structure. Whether that's warbles or wobbles, bleeps or vocal samples.

Review: Welcome to the parallel musical universe of Miss Maria Teresa Luciani, a landscape of sonic architecture and theoretical composition constructed by a family of engineers that reinvented the wheel before the vehicle even began the journey. Imagine, if you will, the musical equivalent of Peter Cook's Archigram group or the soundtrack to Charles and Ray Eames' private sketchbooks, hinting at a new municipal, utopian metropolis just hours before the blueprints are suspiciously misplaced by the courier and mainstream pop building regulations piss on our asbestos bonfire. These 1972 constructions of progressive, cyclic, proto-industrial colour music were never intended for public habitation. These are the Sounds Of The City in a galaxy far, far beneath our radar and above your expectations that was never built. Pseudo-futurist pop music? Cubic folk? Tape-op-art? Si, grazie!

It was assembled in summer 2020 by Brightonian musicians Glenn Fallows and Mark Treffel who drew on their arsenal of vintage synths, pianos, 'other fun toys' and all manner of drums, guitars and bass. The result is a soothing album that will work in the dead of winter as well as the light of the summer thanks to its warm sounds, lush productions and luxuriant arrangements. A worth CD for any collection.

Review: Portland band The Hemloks deal in a specialty take on the genre of funk: lo-fi twangers with a Western verve. 'Outlaw's Theme' is a 7" single that is both good, bad, and ugly; through plodding wah licks and root-note returns, and with true grit, it searches for a place to dance in the sun.. B-side 'Seaweed', meanwhile, plunges us underwater, dub-delaying its lead guitar line for another less-than-clean yet no less infectious slice of West Coast funk.

Review: There's a good chance that many of you reading this will have had a Bill Hicks phase. Normally around the late teens or early twenties, potentially as you began to explore the use of recreational substances and learn about people outside of the mainstream. Even if you didn't, it is never too late to tune into the great American thinker and counter-cultural comic. Intricate Stories is a collection of his best sketches from between 1989 and 1991, all pressed up to eight sides of vinyl for your listening and laughing pleasure.

Review: Avid Discogs fiends are likely to be already aware of Nothing Here Now..., the esteemed collection of audio recordings made by classic writer William S. Burroughs, known for macabre classics like Junky and Naked Lunch. First laid to record in the 50s and 60s, the rare recordings were later picked up by Throbbing Gristle members Genesis P-Orridge and Peter Christopherson, who sensitively compiled Burroughs' already spectral murmurings into a comprehensive and listenable final LP. This reissue comes via Dais, and once more provides a window into the troubled personal life of the writer, who desperately sought to escape city life.

Burroughs Called The Law (1:39)
Review: Cult beat writer, famous drug taker and frankly rather impenetrable mind William S Burroughs is a favourite of Will Self and hung out with Francis Bacon in Tangiers where many outsiders of that time would convene. Break Through In Grey Room is an album released back in 2012 that collects totters his cut-up speeches and recordings of performances between the years of 1960 and 1975. Some are pieces, some are discussions of pieces, all jump back and forth between the conscious to the subconscious are make for challenging but rewarding listening.

Review: U.S. Cinematic outfit Whatitdo Archive Group returns to explore the worlds of mid-Century exotica and library music with Palace of a Thousand Sounds, out on May 5th. This is a rare case of a contemporary "library music" or "archival" record released commercially. Rather than being library music outright, the band, Whatitdo Archive Group, instead aim to reinterpret the many sounds that waft from its esoteric world - from exotica to lounge to 'world'. This album hears them dive into the connotations we might find from 1970s adventure movies, critiquing genres like Spaghetti Westerns and exotic murder mysteries through ironic analog vintagism, chase-scene funk tension, and all-out skill.

Santucci - "Mediterraneo" (3:35)
Castiglione - "Chase" (3:16)
Review: Reference Library dig deep into the archives for this glorious new 7" which comes in super limited quantities. It features Italian artists Santucci and Castiglione taking one side each with their own lush jazz and library tinged instrumentals. Santucci goes first with 'Mediterraneo,' a turbulent brew of double bass and prominent horn work that whips up a real storm as the drums come crashing down like waves on rocks. On the flip side is the lovely 'Castiglione,' a more silky and funky roller with plenty of subtle 60s references and psyched-out details. ''

Review: De Wolfe Music Library is reissuing Keith Papworth's 1975 album which will be music to the ears - pun intended - of record diggers who probably thought they might never own a copy of this grail. His masterpiece is perfectly entitled and is defined by super hard hitting drums and high action hits. The minimalist sounds and heavy grooves have funk deep in their bones, and extra theatre comes from the whistles, natty basslines and big riffing guitars. Papworth not only wrote for this label but also has music featured in Monty Python skits and movies. This, though, is his standout work.

Review: This is exactly the sort of record that collectors fawn over. A collection of mid century jingles will always get us hot under the collar with the prospect of how they could be worked into some next level mix that we never actually get around to putting together, Still, don't let that put you off collecting potential source material because this is a great listen on its own - it has perfect 60s sounds, joyous skits, natty melodic hooks and big swing band sounds all overflowing with positivity and hope. Both platters are very pretty and these sodas were used on ads for everything from pils to pudding.

It was a simpler time back then, with just a couple of channel that everyone sat down to watch together ratter the endless dreaming and digital options we have today. This one comes on splattered vinyl for the very first time.

Cascades (4:19)
Pulsazioni (4:46)
Review: Cascate Emozionali comes to Early Sounds in a flurry of Italian library music splendour, all studio session funk and high-end synth scapes for the discerning groover. Keeping things compact on a 7", this single easily stands up to any classic deep digs from the golden age of library music in the 70s and 80s. There are thrumming arps, slinky basslines, funky clavi and plenty more, all rendered in honey-coated tones that suggest serious care and vintage gear in the signal chain. Early Sounds excel at these kinds of records, and any lover of library music will want to add this nugget to their archives.

Tony Kinsey - "Kaleidoscope" (3:22)
Review: Back in the 60s and 70s, library music exploded as a genre. It saw plenty of talented musicians make extra cash by laying down endless instrumental grooves for use in TV, film and radio. The King Underground label is now digging into the vast vaults for a new series of releases of some of the finest sounds from the era. The first 45 features tracks considered to be 'dramatic' from John Scott and Tony Kinsey. Scott's 'Milky Way' opens up with cosmic chords and sweeping strings that take you to the stars while 'Star Voyage' has a more busy lead. Kinsey's 'Kaleidoscope' builds the tension with multiple movements from several instruments.

One Way Trip (Warm version) (1:58)
One Way Trip (Cool version) (2:46)
Review: King Underground have started a cute series of 7" releases that looks back to the golden era fo library music. The genre was born as a result of TV, film and radio programs needing music to add drama, atmosphere and mood without the expensive licensing costs of using existing tracks. A wealth of musicians thus recorded endless instrumental tracks of all shapes and sizes and now we're treated to some of the best of them. Sam Fonteyn's 'One Way Trip' comes as warm and cool versions with the first bring a low slung bit of vibes-laced funk and the second a more mysterious piece lead by a flute.

Review: First was Brain Eno's Music For Airports then came The Black Dog's Music For Real Airports and now comes Music For Closed Airports by Lorenzo Morresi. The first two were heady, escapist ambient albums with abstruse references to air travel and waiting lounges, while this is a more rhythmic take. It has soaring jazz chords, bristling broken beat drums, and plenty fo library motifs as it plays out. 'Sole' is a real highlight with its icy hip hop beat and noodling chords and 'Red Planet' explores a cosmic house groove.
