Klon (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MODU 002. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. Klon 6 Step
  2. Wild Fudge
  3. Infrastructure
  4. Tinky Tink
Review: 100Hz have consistently snuck out 12"s since the early 90s, but their productivity is at an all time high and their Modugroove label is the perfect vessel to get more of their smartly crafted tech house treats into the ears of discerning DJs and dancers everywhere. This second release on their label kicks off with the atmospheric twinges of "Klon 6 Step", a sizzling, simmering cut for transcendental moments on the floor. "Wild Fudge" is a snappier affair peppered with folky string plucks that sound fresh in the club track context. "Infrastructure" takes things on an emotive tip with a range of strong melodic leads, and "Tinky Tink" ramps up the unease with a creeping jam for the less salubrious end of the night.

Paradisiac EP
Cat: DOOZY 001. Rel: 11 Jun 18
  1. Tomfoolery (7:53)
  2. Can't Do It Alone (6:41)
  3. Lapiz Boof (6:21)
  4. Neptune (6:57)
Review: More wicked grooves from the vaults of UK legends 100 Hz. Comprised of Lee Renacre, James Chapman and Doran Walker, the team behind the seminal Format imprint have had retrospective works reissued on the likes of Bosconi, Slow Life and Howl in recent times - so indeed you can recognise the trio's influence on a new generation of underground house producers. Here they inaugurate Doozy Cult from Lisbon, with some timeless snapshots of bleep techno as heard on the cyclical hypnotism of "Tomfoolery", the tunnelling minimal techno of "Lapiz Boof" and the ethereal shuffle of "Neptune" on the flip - that is just as suited to present day afterhours parties as it was way back when.

  1. 212 (5:16)
  2. 186 (6:38)
  3. 229 (5:38)
  4. 189 (6:03)
Review: Former Twig and Manitou contributors 616 have been silent since launching their 616 Lab series of 12" singles back in 2019, making this typically stripped-back and mind-altering EP long overdue. We'll forgive them though, because there's some seriously good material amongst the four numerically titled tracks on show. '212' for example, is a deliciously squelchy and spacey chunk of off-kilter tech-house-funk, while '186' adds chiming, Brown Album-era Orbital style melodies and acid lines to a hybrid electro/techno beat. The fun continues on the flip, where the UKG influenced acid two-step of '229' comes followed by the doom-laden sci-fi techno stomp of '189'.

808's & Drunken States (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ALB 008. Rel: 13 Feb 17
  1. 76-79 - "57 Hertz" (Czevski remix) (6:53)
  2. Tommy Vicari Jnr - "Because You Can't See Dreams In The Light" (5:59)
  3. Tommy Vicari Jnr - "L I W F U" (6:30)
Review: It's been a while since the Albion stable graced our platters, but they're back in style with more of that on-point house music voodoo for the heat of the night. This single is a vessel for the various sides of Tommi Vicari Jr, who rolls out his Czevski alias to deliver a bruising remix of "57 Hertz" by 76-79. It's a reverb-soaked, dubbed out affair with a rock solid rhythm section and plenty of trippy FX tweaking on top. On the flip it's a different story with a similar feeling as we get the straight up Tommi Vicari Jr material in the shape of two killer tracks crafted for transcendental moments of dancefloor hypnosis.

  2. Dancing On Soft Borders (reprise) (4:36)
  3. After A Short Illness (2:43)
  4. Dancing On Soft Borders (3:56)
  5. RIYL Failures (9:32)
Review: While the name may be new, A New Line (Related) is supposedly the work of an already established musician, although Kimochi was never a label that cared about hype. The music stands just fine on its own, digging into the kind of dusty and dusky house and techno formations that the label has forged its hand-sprayed identity on. There's plenty of ambient techno twirls to be enjoyed on the likes of "Dancing On Soft Borders", while the beats melt away entirely on "After A Short Illness" and grandiose EP closer "RIYL Failures". Once again Kimochi comes up with the kind of meaningful variations on the 4/4 framework that keep our record bags full and our souls enriched.

Go With The Flo EP
Cat: EPHCS 001. Rel: 24 Mar 20
  1. You Gotta (7:11)
  2. Bliss (7:32)
  3. Techfest (8:26)
  4. Suits You (6:29)
Review: For the first release on their freshly minted Euphoric State sub-label, London label OPIA has turned to '90s survivors A2 & Stopouts, a trio of producers who first made their name as British tech-house pioneers in the late 1990s. The four tracks showcased on "Go With The Flo" apparently date from this period, though this is the first time they've seen the light of day. There's much to admire throughout, from the rolling, funk-fuelled house grooves and intergalactic pads of opener "You Gotta", to the jacking tech-funk of closing cut "Suits You", via the glassy-eyed rush of "Techfest", where sci-fi motifs and dream house electronics rise above bumping beats and a deliciously squelchy bassline.

ACEXP04
ACEXP04 (100 gram vinyl 10")
Cat: ACEXP 04. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. 1A
  2. 1B
Review: We're not sure who's behind the mysterious AC-EXP project, but the shadowy figure returns with more of that strange, submerged house music he's been tickling discerning DJs with over the past few years. After taking last year off, "1A" is a fine place to start things up again with a strutting jack track carrying acidic synth pulses that flirt with measured delay processing. It's a jam that sounds steamy and sinister all at once. "1B" maintains this restrained but seductive vibe with the slightly trancey throb of the lead synths pivoting around the snappy drums to great effect.

  1. Equation (4:35)
  2. Broken (7:07)
  3. Planetary Vision (6:05)
  4. Equation (Muelsa mix) (5:55)
Review: EYA's Lone Wolf sublabel continues to bring us the goods when it comes to deep, old-skool flavoured techno with a house bump. Aving cropped up on a various artists 12" on Lone Wolf last year, Ukranian producer AC130 makes a welcome return with this killer slab of party ready heat. 'Equation' plays the emotional card with its soaring pads, but up front it's a sprightly, upferrit jacker. 'Broken' has a cheekiness in its step, not least thanks to the wobbly lead chords hovering over the track. 'Planetary Vision' plies more of the bleepy, dreamy vibes without dialling back those crisp 909 drums, and then Muelsa steps up with a suitably blissed out remix of 'Equation' that slots in with the mood of the EP perfectly.

Cat: RMS 010. Rel: 14 Dec 15
  1. Tacos Per Minute (8:50)
  2. Mezcalid (7:22)
  3. Techno Wellys (6:20)
Review: Alex Wolfenden and Negghead are back everyone: look out! Known together as the Acid Mondays, these lads throw down yet another session of dirty and adrenalised tech house for long sweaty nights on the island's super clubs. First track "Tacos Per Minute" features a booming bass backed by a sleek and sturdy rhythm and trippy chords. "Mezcalid" is a deeper and more organic sounding house cut with druggy horns, trippy vocal samples and as always: a lot bass driving the groove. It's reminiscent of old stuff by Andomat 3000 & Jan or Michel Cleis. Finally "Techno Wellys" is the peak time weapon on here and it's sure to work. A signal run through a heavy delay provides the track's driving and trippy melody above a furious tom drum work out and intermittent druggy vocal samples.

  3. JAMIIE & Niko Schwind - "Suwedi" (7:24)
  4. Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti - "Forever More" (4:59)
Review: Watergate welcomes back a crew of regular artists for an EP taken from the 27th instalment of its long running mix series. The Adana Twins kick off with a dark and bubbling minimal house number to set a late night mood then Sabb & Black Circle combine to great effect on the more uplifting, piano laced 'Vega', no doubt inspired by the house icon of the same name. Flip it over for 'Suwedi', a tech house track that traps you in a trance with computer melodies and last of all Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti get all spiritual and joyous with the warm house surges of 'Forever More.'

  4. Pyramid (Oliver Moon remix) (7:24)
Review: Oliver Moon introduces the Dancing With Strangers record label, alongside good friend and fellow DJ/Producer Paul Louth aka Agile Kind - who inaugurates the label here. While it may have been a long time between drinks for the veteran DJ on the production front (he's intermittently created music under aliases like Water Walk and Soulfish over the years) he proves that slow and steady wins the race on the "Pyramid EP". The emotive vibe of early '90s British IDM and US techno-soul is eminent throughout. From the sensual deepness of the title track or B side cut "Mime" which are reminiscent of classics by the likes of DaRandLand, not to mention the full throttle rework by legend Kirk Degiorgio under the As One moniker on the flip.

  3. Legende
  4. Walty
Review: Matias Aguayo returns to the warm bosom of Cologne's Kompakt label - the imprint on which he first made his name - for his first outing of 2014. The typically atmospheric Legende is not a great departure musically - his usual skewed pop, minimal techno, subtle new wave guitars, fuzzy electronica and woozy ambient influences are all present and correct - but it is decidedly impressive (thanks, in no small part, to his mastery of mood and melody). The title track impresses with its' fluttering, glitchy approach, while "Run Away From The Sun" recalls his early material on Kompakt Pop. Best of all, though, is "Lola in the City", a decidedly off-kilter fusion of traditional Chilean instrumentation, spacey bleep melodies and a scratchy, loose-sounding groove.

  1. Catacombs2 (12:29)
  2. Globus (8:53)
Review: The most surprising release this week comes from Thomas Melchior's newly inaugurated My King Is Light label, presenting its sophomore release courtesy of veteran U.S. producer Amir Alexander. The Vanguard Sound main man isn't usually known for his minimal house exploits, but sure proves his talent for it here on the 'Wisdom' EP. A side "Catacombs2" treads along a ghostly trail similar to Melchior's own work, with all its deep and hypnotic elements aimed squarely at the afterhours dancefloor. On the flip, we have the lean and subtle groove of "Globus" which continues with the arcane and 'magickal' vibes; its bouncy melodic bass works your feet, while the warped/operatic vocal tones flip your mind!

Review: The latest slab from Dutch delights SlapFunk sees a return from regular contributor Julian Alexander. Since he was last on the label, Alexander has been teaming up with Blind Box Series and Rawax, but he comes back home with an assured six track EP that highlights his continued progression as a producer. The release is bookended by short but immersive ambient cuts, with the primary focus being four forthright minimal house burners that continue the fine tradition of SlapFunk as a whole. From the snaking beat and cheeky b-line of "Nibyc" to the hard-stepping thrust of "Asco 52," there is plenty here for fans of the label's sound to lap up.

Review: Enzo Siragusa's esteemed Fuse London imprint brings the sounds of his notorious daytime rave parties to wax, this time in the form of Utrecht's Julian Alexander who has presented work previously on his own SlapFunk, Dungeon Meat and Julian Sandre's Blind Box. The Golden Hue EP serves up yet more of his rolling deep house grooves, as displayed on "Sweet Rain" where early '90's style U.S. garage rhythms combine with hypnotic pads and spacey sounds that'd make even The Mountain People stand up and notice. On the flip, the tough and rolling grooves continue on "Present" while Alexander then goes for something much darker and tunnelling on the trippy and stripped back afterhours groove of "Straight". Tip!

Review: F Communications, the ling time label run by French techno legend Laurent Garnier, keeps on marking its 25th anniversary with an on point series of releases, remasters and remixes of some of its best moments. For many, Alexkid's 'Dont Hide It' will always be synonymous with the late great Andrew Weatherall, who dropped it into his Fabric mix in sublime fashion. That was the vocal version which is a dirty, rasping, jacking cut with a breathy vocal totally at odds with the filthy production. The a-side is an acid workout from 303 maestro Josh Wink that is quite different, but also just as killer.

Review: The Axces label began last year with a split 12" from Kasper Marott and Alfredo92, and now the latter returns to the label he founded to present a full EP of interlocking electronics with an experimental, home-listening slant. "Mimis" centres around some wonderfully sculpted rhythms and a tasteful dose of dub processing, while "Helfand" takes things further out with dislocated machine chatter and bongo triggering that moves like electro without the 808 backbone. "Adax_PCP" is a crafty slice of crooked techno that plays out with a live, jammed vibe and a jazzy key refrain that brings some noticeable humanity into the track, and then "Scalex" completes the set with further synthetic wobbles around fractured rhythms that look beyond genre conventions to create something truly fresh.

Review: While he may have been operating in the underground for some time, Darren Allen's music is only just coming to light through his own Underlying Form label now. There's a range of styles on offer across this EP, kicking off with the subtle pulse of "Feel" before moving on to a distinctly French-flavoured micro house groove on "Inmost Cave" that wouldn't sound out of place on Telegraph Records. On the B side, "Routine Kills Inspiration" switches the mood up with a rougher sound palette, even if the arrangement is still a minimally-minded affair. Then it's left to Vid Vai to drop a complex reworking of "MD Habitat" loaded with intricate textures.

Review: Giant Records is the new label from Grant Dell, a man that has been at the forefront of the tech-house scene for over 15 years and has amassed a truly enviable back catalogue of releases. Giant's first release is from Mark Allister, whose skill for crafting a proper old school tech-house groove on "Not Going Back" is more than matched by his talent for laying down vocals. Complementing this original, Jay Tripwire turns in a self-styled "Marimba machine redux", whilst label head Grant Dell chooses to focus on Allister's vocal for a remix that possesses keys that wouldn't sound out of place on a Kraftwerk track. Supported by Mr G, Doc Martin, Eddie Richards, John Digweed, Richie Hawtin.

  1. Why Not?!
Review: Alter Ego are back! "Why Not?!" is a strictly limited white vinyl one-sided 12" out on Klang Electronik. The track is stomping and playful at the same time, but surprises with sudden changes in the arrangement and sound, which really breathes life into it and makes you smile all over the face.
