Saving My Love
Cat: KM 058. Rel: 18 Oct 21
  1. Saving My Love (4:18)
Review: Adam Port, &ME and Rampa at team up with Little Dragon are quite the collaboration here on 'Saving My Love', a one track 12' where the deep house sound of Berlin collides with Swedish pop sensibilities. Proper mood music for late night basement parties, the Keinemusik trio's idiosyncratic style of bold, emotive and futuristic groove is the perfect backdrop to Yukumi Nagano's breathtaking vocals. Tip!

  3. After A Short Illness (2:43)
  4. Dancing On Soft Borders (3:56)
  5. RIYL Failures (9:32)
Review: While the name may be new, A New Line (Related) is supposedly the work of an already established musician, although Kimochi was never a label that cared about hype. The music stands just fine on its own, digging into the kind of dusty and dusky house and techno formations that the label has forged its hand-sprayed identity on. There's plenty of ambient techno twirls to be enjoyed on the likes of "Dancing On Soft Borders", while the beats melt away entirely on "After A Short Illness" and grandiose EP closer "RIYL Failures". Once again Kimochi comes up with the kind of meaningful variations on the 4/4 framework that keep our record bags full and our souls enriched.

  4. Pattern Recognition (4:51)
Review: Slapping up-down tech house via techno from Lviv producer AC130. His debut for the Parisian label Griffe records - 'Destination Unknown', which came out last year - now sees a few more copies hit our shelves. We're bowled over by the Todd Terry-like swing on the A, 'Abduction', while the techier, bell-chimingly charming tones of 'Wireless Talk' and 'Xtra D' zap us with surplus energy, leaving us with a boundless motivation to dance by the time the EP's coldwavey sci-fi closer, 'Pattern Recognition', rolls around.

Tacos Per Minute EP
Cat: RMS 010. Rel: 14 Dec 15
  1. Tacos Per Minute (8:50)
  2. Mezcalid (7:22)
  3. Techno Wellys (6:20)
Review: Alex Wolfenden and Negghead are back everyone: look out! Known together as the Acid Mondays, these lads throw down yet another session of dirty and adrenalised tech house for long sweaty nights on the island's super clubs. First track "Tacos Per Minute" features a booming bass backed by a sleek and sturdy rhythm and trippy chords. "Mezcalid" is a deeper and more organic sounding house cut with druggy horns, trippy vocal samples and as always: a lot bass driving the groove. It's reminiscent of old stuff by Andomat 3000 & Jan or Michel Cleis. Finally "Techno Wellys" is the peak time weapon on here and it's sure to work. A signal run through a heavy delay provides the track's driving and trippy melody above a furious tom drum work out and intermittent druggy vocal samples.

  1. Admnti - "Overthink" (7:51)
  2. Admnti - "Hypersphere" (7:03)
  3. T Jacques - "Five Dollar Shake" (6:16)
  4. T Jacques - "Blunted" (7:42)
Review: There has been no stoping the good people behind Manchester's Dansu Discs this year. They have served up a wealth of club ready sounds that take in garage, house, techno and minimal from a range of fresh artists. After standouts from the likes of Wilfy D and Vitess coes this super split from Admnti and T Jacques. There is a seductive smoothness to the comsic house pumper that is opener 'Overthink' while 'Hypersphere' has a warm, surging bassline that will act as a life-giving pulse for any club. T Jacques immediately cuts loose on the futuristic tech of 'Five Dollar Shake' and 'Blunted' is another characterful collection of house kicks, watery effects and old school baselines that surge through the stars.

Intergalactic Friends EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SBEE 005. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. The Science Of Happiness (7:33)
  2. Phone Sex (5:37)
  3. Sarah Tonin (8:35)
  4. I Got It (5:47)
Review: Following releases from Aladdin!, Mathijs Smit and more, Beeyou sublabel Subee comes back once again like the proverbial renegade master with some seriously pumped up tech house that very nearly teeters towards outright funky house, brought to you by Aerofunk. But don't be fooled, there's plenty of techy crunch in the drums on 'The Science Of Happiness' to balance out the slinky bass. 'Phone Sex' keeps things saucy and sleazy, with some bright chord stabs and a tough beat behind the heavy breathing, pillow talking samples. 'Sarah Tonin' is another sprightly, playful jam and 'I Got It' whips up a storm of broken beat drums that teases from the intro to the outro.

Pyramid EP
Cat: DWS 001. Rel: 27 May 20
  1. Pyramid (9:12)
  2. Pyramid (As One remix) (6:26)
  3. Mime (7:01)
  4. Pyramid (Oliver Moon remix) (7:24)
Review: Oliver Moon introduces the Dancing With Strangers record label, alongside good friend and fellow DJ/Producer Paul Louth aka Agile Kind - who inaugurates the label here. While it may have been a long time between drinks for the veteran DJ on the production front (he's intermittently created music under aliases like Water Walk and Soulfish over the years) he proves that slow and steady wins the race on the "Pyramid EP". The emotive vibe of early '90s British IDM and US techno-soul is eminent throughout. From the sensual deepness of the title track or B side cut "Mime" which are reminiscent of classics by the likes of DaRandLand, not to mention the full throttle rework by legend Kirk Degiorgio under the As One moniker on the flip.

Cat: EG 01. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. X17 (8:56)
  2. X17 (Rhythm dub) (5:57)
  3. X17 (Viiibe) (6:14)
Review: Los Angeles-based DJ, producer and live-act Dave Aju has been turning out under the radar house sounds on labels like Circus Company and Mule Musiq for years. Now he has decided to go it alone with his own new imprint, Elbow Grease, which he has said will aim to be "genre-defiant." It launches with 'X17', which is said to have been recorded at G-Son Studios, the Beastie Boys' now-defunct studio, and features an array of electro, house and techno sounds. The original is a nice cosmic workout with crunchy hits, the dub is a bit fatter, deeper, more atmospheric, and the Viiibe mix is filled with lush keys.

Samba
Samba (12")
Cat: TTT 079. Rel: 30 Apr 19
  1. Samba (9:27)
  2. Memo (12:46)
Review: Alex is a brand new alias from the artist regularly known as Baba Stiltz - a Swedish producer whose quirky, off-kilter house and techno releases are rarely less than brilliant. His first Trilogy Tapes outing is suitably impressive. The real killer is "Samba", an inspired nine minute workout in which he layers deep, woozy electric piano motifs, sun-kissed chords, child-like vocal samples and rich bass atop a swinging, samba fired techno beat. The deeper and more bass-heavy "Memo" is even more epic; a near 13-minute journey through sparse, crunchy, hypnotic and dubbed-out minimal house rhythms and exotic, snake charmer solos. In other words, it's another top-notch EP from a producer who genuinely can do no wrong.

Don't Hide It Acid Mixes (reissue)
Cat: 267WT 22133. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Don't Hide It (Josh Wink Acid Pussy) (9:29)
  2. Don't Hide It (Alexkid vocal) (6:24)
  3. Don't Hide It (Alexkid Acid club) (6:04)
Review: F Communications, the ling time label run by French techno legend Laurent Garnier, keeps on marking its 25th anniversary with an on point series of releases, remasters and remixes of some of its best moments. For many, Alexkid's 'Dont Hide It' will always be synonymous with the late great Andrew Weatherall, who dropped it into his Fabric mix in sublime fashion. That was the vocal version which is a dirty, rasping, jacking cut with a breathy vocal totally at odds with the filthy production. The a-side is an acid workout from 303 maestro Josh Wink that is quite different, but also just as killer.

Helfand EP
Helfand EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AXS 3. Rel: 17 Feb 20
  1. Mimis (5:15)
  2. Helfand (5:31)
  3. Adax_PCP (6:06)
  4. Scalex (4:42)
Review: The Axces label began last year with a split 12" from Kasper Marott and Alfredo92, and now the latter returns to the label he founded to present a full EP of interlocking electronics with an experimental, home-listening slant. "Mimis" centres around some wonderfully sculpted rhythms and a tasteful dose of dub processing, while "Helfand" takes things further out with dislocated machine chatter and bongo triggering that moves like electro without the 808 backbone. "Adax_PCP" is a crafty slice of crooked techno that plays out with a live, jammed vibe and a jazzy key refrain that brings some noticeable humanity into the track, and then "Scalex" completes the set with further synthetic wobbles around fractured rhythms that look beyond genre conventions to create something truly fresh.

  1. Raw Duties (7:13)
  2. Bold (7:42)
  3. Sit With Me (7:17)
  4. The Light (7:53)
Review: The land down under seems to be really embracing the Rominimal sounds in recent times. Joining the likes of Lokomotiv and Unic is another Sydney-based label called Thinc who are into their third release, courtesy of Bucharest duo Alsi who are the founders of Presence. On the first volume of Raw Duties, you have the hypnotic and meditative polyrhythms of the title track that's geared properly for getting weird at the afterhours, as is the paranoid microhouse of "Bold" up next - mind you this one's definitely more straight ahead. Over on side B, it's all about the evocative sunrise breaks of 'The Light'.

Ritmatico
Ritmatico (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ELMTS 001. Rel: 12 May 21
  1. Ritmatico (14:05)
  2. Function (7:26)
  3. Down (8:07)
Review: Alsi are a DJ and producer duo from Bucharest, formed by Alex Florea and Silviu Tanase who are founders of the label Presence. They inaugurate the Elements label here with the Ritmatico EP, featuring three heady cuts that will no doubt find favour on afterhours dancefloors within their local circuit and beyond. The title track on the A side is a long and infectiously druggy microhouse affair, that perfectly encapsulates knackered Sunday morning paranoia. Over on the flip, you have got the tough rolling tech house of 'Function' that's very much in the tradition of the Rominimal sound, followed by one more lean and subtle affair on the deeper tip in the form of 'Down'.

Terula EP (Barut mix)
Terula EP (Barut mix) (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: BM 006. Rel: 14 Mar 22
  1. Looperman (9:19)
  2. Terula (8:18)
  3. Terula (Barut remix) (7:46)
Review: UK-based producer Ted Amber continues his working relationship with Botanic Minds, moving from the minimal label's Sunset Series to a new EP which further rounds out his sound beyond that golden hour vibe. There's still a certain amount of balmy magic to his productions, with 'Looperman' carrying a steadfast tech house undercarriage through ample flora and fauna, implying some equatorial surroundings. 'Terula' has a more intricate, subtly pumped up atmosphere thanks to interlocking beats moving in twitchy unison, but it's still ultimately defined by the hazy, organic vibe Amber permeates his tracks with. Barut comes on board for a remix of 'Terula' and makes a tastefully dubbed variation on the original without losing that dancefloor sensibility.
