6 Years Of Eastenderz Pt 1
6 Years Of Eastenderz Pt 1 (marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: ENDZ 039. Rel: 25 Sep 20
  1. Floog - "Games Of Drones" (7:39)
  2. Cosmjn - "Cosmo Acids" (7:17)
  3. Vlad Arapasu - "Egoland" (7:42)
  4. Wickham - "Mello" (7:01)
Review: East End Dubs' Eastenderz label keeps on turning out hugely functional but also charming dub tech that is stripped back to its bones and laced with funk. This new various artist EP packs a powerful punch from the off, with Floog laying down some vital kicks and whirring machine sounds to send any floor into overdrive. Cosmjn then takes us to another planet with his dreamy pads and Vlad Arapasu's 'Egoland' sounds like a classic Terry Francis cut from the mid-90s, so in other words, pure fire. There's no mucking around on 'Mello', a razor sharp closer with hi hats that would cut though steel.

  1. Fates Unknown (6:03)
  2. Fates Unknown (Erika remix) (6:26)
  3. Pendle By Night (7:03)
Review: Johannes Auvinen aka Tin Man sure has proven himself to be the reigning acid master with a mastery over that little silver Roland box that's possibly unmatched. Back on LA home turf Acid Test, he this time teams up with Manchester duo Jozef K and Winter Son for the Fates Unknown EP for some truly soulful and emotive deep house featuring Tin Man's unmistakeable synth leads over some sombre piano and pad led deepness on the title track. Interdimensional Transmissions Erika from Detroit reworks the track into a more lo-fi and dusty rendition yet retaining Tin Man's gnarly 303 work; you could imagine them dropping this one at No Way Back that's for sure. On the flip is yet another gorgeously emotive epic in the form of "Pendle By Night" which proves to everyone just how you make a dark journey track with the perfectly executed dance floor drama.

  4. Shamania (Villalobos & Melchior Spirit remix 2) (15:21)
Review: Fresh from the success of their "Water, Sky, Sun, Wood" album on Mule Musiq - a fine "hour-long meditation" born out of a four-hour improvisation - Wareika return to the dancefloor via a suitably hypnotic double-pack on Sleep Is Commercial. In its original form, the epic "Shamania" offers a near perfect balance between trippy, Villalobos style slipped minimal techno grooves and fluid - if distant sounding - piano movements. Fittingly, Villalobos provides two epic reworks alongside occasional collaborator Melchior Spirit: the first is glitchy, rubbery and undeniably mind-altering, while the second wraps weirdo electronics and mangled voices around a bolder, arguably heavier groove. For those looking for a "bigger", more compressed sound, the rolling tech-house flex of the Dunkle Dummies No Stop Mix is the one to check.

Review: The Warmers inaugurate new label Nanosphere out of France. This project was born to give introspective and sunny vibes and is supported by Rominimal heroes such as Arapu, Gescu, Priku, Vincentiulian and Livio & Roby. From the ethereal and evocative broken beat action of "Sunday Medication" to the swing-fuelled and dubbed-out tech house of "Cumulonimbus" or the ethereal hypnotiser "Purple Space" there's even a remix by Rominimal stalwart Direkt on the flip which takes the track deeper into alien psychedelia territory - tip!

  1. The Watcher (7:04)
  2. Friends That We Met Amongst The Stars (6:10)
  3. Smacked Out On Smudge (5:44)
Review: British retrovert, analogue gear freak and frequent KiNK collaborator Neville Watson is back, this time on Craig Richards' always surprising The Nothing Special. First track "The Watcher" sounds like early Kevin Saunderson with its massive hoover bass and tough beat backed by a huge vocal refrain; this track will tear the roof off! Next up is the Robert Hood style cyclical jam "Friends We Met Among The Stars" its hypnotic groove is as driving as it is infectious and the real highlight on here. Finally on the flip we have "Smacked Out On Smudge" a deep dirty acid jam with an absolute killer of a bassline that modulates and resonates all over the shop with a druggy, delay drenched monologue for added headrush potential.

  1. No 70007 (part 1) (7:19)
  2. No 70007 (part 2) (7:30)
Review: Man of many aliases Rene Pawlowitz has recorded under many pseudonyms over the years, though it's his Shed and Head High monikers that tend to get the most interest. Here he delivers a rare outing as Wax, a nom-de-plume he first used 11 years ago. A-side "No. 70007 (Part 1)" is a bona-fide techno club cut built around a rubbery rhythm track that boasts far more swing than your average Berlin production, with Pawlowitz's selected musical elements - drowsy, almost ghostly chords and slowly rising strings - only coming to the fore as the track progresses. The flipside "Part 2" version expertly re-arranges the same elements, breaking up the beats further while adding a druggy, almost metallic stab to add a frisson of intensity.

Gently (Baby Ford/Dazmos mixes) (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Gently (Baby Ford & Dazmos Backroom mix) (9:25)
  2. Gently (Baby Ford & Dazmos Frontroom mix) (8:38)
  3. Gently (3:18)
Review: Baby Ford and Dazmos take the limelight on this first release on Nice 1. We Are Syd's original "Gently" is a mellow downtempo roller featuring choice vocals from Shea Seger, but it's the remixes here that get pride of place. Ford and Dazmos lock into an understated drum machine funk draped in hazy pads on the A side "Backroom Mix", while on the flip they push the club elements to the forefront. Riding the rhythm section with intent while still retaining the smoky spirit of the original, the pairing come up with an impeccable "Frontroom" club cut that should nestle comfortably into the bags of all deep digging house heads.

  2. 90 Steps (6:01)
  3. All The Stars (8:08)
  4. All The Stars (Nemo Vachez 4/4 Sunset dub) (5:18)
Review: Label boss Mitch Wellings is at the wheel for the second Space Tour outing - a year after the first - and is in fine form here. Opener "Break It Down" is a real party starter that melds garage drums and house soul into a compelling new beat that is clean and crisp, fresh and funky. "90 Steps" gets more deep and balmy, with smooth chords and neon tones wrapping you in melody while the kicking drums stay busy. "All The Stars" keeps up the innovation with knocking woody beats and R&B vocals next to bendy synth lines that sound distinctly UK. "All The Stars (Nemo Vachez 4/4 Sunset dub)" is a cute and curious closer.

Renditions (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DMS 002. Rel: 04 Nov 19
  1. Reality (8:27)
  2. Can't Stop (6:45)
  3. Renditions (7:09)
Review: After launching the Depths Of My Soul label in 2018, Nat Wendell got snapped up by the ever-excellent Courtesy Of Balance for a follow up. Now he's back on his own turf with his third release, and sounding tighter than ever. "Reality" is a driving minimal house joint with drums in all the right places and a nagging chord line to latch onto. "Can't Stop" keeps things looped up just as much, precision engineering the music for the DJs and championing the sound of true tech house. "Renditions" completes the set with a more reduced mood offset by a subtly cheeky bassline and spaced out swirls aplenty.

Make My Love (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: GYC 001. Rel: 30 May 17
  1. Make My Love (6:14)
Review: Yet more classy techno emanates from Paris' hotbed of talent as the mysterious Who decides to launch Get Your Copy Records after 15 years spent slaving away in the studio. Making a statement with his first release, the long serving background artist has chosen to dig out an archival track and drop it as a single-sided 12", the biggest compliment a track can surely receive. There's no doubt that "Make My Love" is worthy of such treatment, sporting a punchy set of techno rhythms that meet with sexy vocal licks and a deadly lead synth that truly marks the track out a crowd pleaser.

Detroit Red EP (1-sided 12")

  1. Beyond The Means
  2. Exhibition
Review: This time the Mojuba sublabel brings us the second part of the 'Detroit' series by the label owner Don Williams himself. This one-sided
record features two fine examples of music inspired by the city of D. The first one is a pumping, peak-time cut to hit the dancefloors with
and might become an essential tool for the ambitious DJ. The second track convinces in its very own character, providing a feeling that
many will recognize from the early years of techno, when this music was connected to the listener in a more deep and emotional way.

Review: Following up a terrific release by Phillip Boss, Baba Osman's label is back with release number three already! It shall come as no surprise then that's he's handpicked another up and coming producer from the Frankfurt Am Main area - introducing Harry Wills. Like previous outings on the label, expect some classic Detroit and electro flavors perceived through a modern lens. From the four-to-the-floor electro funk of "Whashuring" (which will mix in well with your Libertine and Traffic records), to to the druggy and bass heavy dystopia of "Nice Modular" which also gets a jungle laced remix by DJ Yue Ganja on their Rave dub remix.

  3. Zigg Gonsalezz - "Sunday" (Work It) (4:09)
Review: On the latest missive from his energy packed Power House imprint, Rene Pawlowitz - he of Shed and Head High fame - has chosen to showcase tracks from two of his lesser-celebrated alter egos, WK7 and Zigg Gonsalezz. As befits the peak-time ready, party-starting nature of the label, A-side 'Wait' offers an addictive blend of bustling, beefed-up house drums, glassy-eyed female vocal samples and sleazy, rave-igniting riffs. Over on the flip we get two distinctive takes on 'Sunday': the classic New Jersey garage meets Nu Groove style deep house warmth of the '3pm' version, and a stomping late night revision (entitled 'Work It') that peppers a chunky, extra-percussive beat with tight electric piano stabs and booming bass.

  1. Yes (7:32)
  2. Calma Calma (6:49)
Review: Although Robag Wruhme has appeared on the main Kompakt label a number of times over the last decade, this two-track 12" is actually his first appearance on the club-focused Kompakt Extra offshoot. As you'd expect from a producer with such a great track record, A-side "Yes" is superb. Built around swinging, off-kilter tech-house beats, hazy aural textures and a driving bassline, the track builds in waves thanks to Wruhme's canny use of moody pads, sustained - and undeniably creepy - chords and a wiggly acid line that intensifies as the track progresses. Over on the flip, "Calma Calma" is an altogether deeper and quietly sunny affair, with Wruhme wrapping female spoken word vocals, stirring orchestration and glassy-eyed melodies around another crunchy tech-house groove.
