Space Drift EP (remixes)
Cat: AMSV 004. Rel: 12 Jun 24
97NY (TC80 remix) (5:59)
Aeons (Pedro Goya remix) (8:43)
Bad Sector (Miles Ellis remix) (5:38)
Space Draft (Karaba remix) (6:15)
Review: Accented Measures Series (AMS) is a still relatively new series that has been compiled and arranged by Accented Measures and is designed to deal in unreleased and new music from some of the scene's key names. The Space Drift Remixes EP is next up the series with a combination of 90s vibes and modern grooves. '97NY' (TC80 remix) is heads down and raw as you like tech. 'Aeons' (Pedro Goya remix) rather spins you out on more silky cosmic pads and the Miles Ellis remix of 'Bad Sector' is thudding tech with rigid drums and washes of sugary synth. 'Space Draft' (Karaba remix) begins some serenity and smoothness to the final cut.

Review: The debut EP from Ageless is a catchy, exciting dance record that spreads itself across genres like house, disco, electro and minimal. Collaborating with Alexander Skancke, Ageless delivers a collection that transcends mere music, serving as a homage to the enduring influence of art as each track pulsates with Ageless's distinctive vision, weaving hypnotic rhythms and enveloping melodies that evoke the sensation of an awakening dream. Also features a remix of each main track by Alexander Skancke that makes this a groove packed, versatile package.

Fake Mood & DIBIDABO - "Coconana" (Nicone Acid Disco Nana remix) (6:28)
Mutul & David Read - "Breathe" (Pablo Bolivar Remake) (7:02)
Review: German label and once-cult club Bar 25 is making its 200th release with a series of remixes. The EP comes in different formats with this being a limited edition purple marbled 12" with a special postcard included. Aiwaska's 'Tip' delivers a dark and driving energy, setting a fine tone for the release from the off. Meanwhile, Omeria's remix of Kaiser Waldon takes a deeper approach, creating a rich and immersive soundscape. Fake Mood & Dibidabo's 'Coconan' receives a textured and chugging transformation with Nicone's Acid Disco Nana remix. Finally, Pablo Bolivar's remake brings a dubbed-out sense of deepness and rounds out the collection with his signature touch.

Review: Cult German club Bar 25 had a great spot down by the river and an organic, boho vibe. It has long since carried that over into its label which deals in contemporary minimal from a wide range of producers. The rather incredible 200th release is now here and is a various artists affair that starts with Aiwaska's 'Tip' which is dark and driving. Elsewhere an Omeria remix of Kaiser Waldon is more deep and Fake Mood & Dibidabo's 'Coconan' gets a textured and chugging Nicone Acid Disco Nana remix. Last but not least is a Pablo Bolivar Remake with dubbed-out deepness.

Hyaku (5:24)
Shichi (6:25)
Rei (7:30)
Review: Omakase, which is the name of a style of Japanese dining that means literally 'I leave it up to you' and gives full control of a meal to the chef in question, is also now an ever more vital minimal label. This is its third outing and one with Antraum at the helm. It kick off with 'Hyaku' with its bluesy vocal samples and lazy, infectious drum loops, then has 'Shichi' has more silky and spaced out pads and smooth grooves. 'Rei' is a dreamy one with balmy chords making for a trippy late night day dream and is the sort of track that will zoned out dance floors at 5 am. A tasteful EP for sure.

Smart Lock (5:35)
Review: Funk On kicks off its journey with an electro workout from Atree. This is raw, percussive, rugged electro rather than silky cinematic tackle and it is therefore sure to punch through on the dance floor. 'Spirit Of The Hawk' gets things underway with wispy pads and diffuse chords next to clipped vocal samples. 'Still Positive' then rides on crisp drums with soothing backlit pads and 'You Make Me Feel' layers up wonky synth lines with retro-future bass. 'Smart Lock' is a twitchy, kinetic closer that rounds out a fine first outing.

Get It Up (6:30)
Mardigra (7:01)
De Crezy (6:37)
Right On Time (6:19)
Review: Andrew Azara's Right On Time EP, released via Cecille Records, is a hot house record eager to work the dancefloor. With a career spanning back to 2017 and releases on esteemed labels like elrow, Origins, and Politics Of Dancing, Azara adds another feather to his cap with this latest release. The EP opens with 'Get It Up,' featuring saturated organic drum grooves, weighty sub bass lines and a fusion of filtered synth licks, vocal chants and tension-building strings. 'Mardigra' follows suit, embracing a classic house feel with a swinging rhythm section and bumpy stab-led bass groove, complemented by gritty stabs and intricately processed vocal cuts. On Side-2, 'De Crezy' introduces a funk-infused walking bass line, dynamic percussion, and subtly unfurling atmospheric tension. The title track, 'Right On Time,' concludes the EP with skippy drums, murky sub bass swells, hazy chords, airy strings, and oscillating resonant synth flutters. Overall, 'Right On Time' is full of well produced soulful house music.

A New World To Forget (5:32)
Tape Jam (Pt 2) (3:58)
0221 (Serious mix) (8:25)
Motion Anthem (6:06)
Review: New Jersey-born Ali Berger is a drum machine specialist and low-key US electronic music standby, now based in Pittsburgh after spending the 2010s in Boston and Detroit. His catalog of original music runs deep, with over 60 releases on his Trackland label and EPs on imprints like Spectral Sound and Sequencias, all resulting from a lovingly-cultivated studio approach which respects improvisation as a spiritual practice. Here with this sublime release on Scissors and Thread, Serious, Berger collects tracks "from the last three years, plus 0221 (Serious Mix) from 2018", portraying the pursuit of an art form (techno, house) that demands that one take oneself seriously, whilst also periodically calling that sense of self-seriousness into question. As stated by Berger, there is a sense of deep melancholy that runs throughout the record, whether on the watery functions of 'Tape Jam (Pt. 2)' or the sparse synth-keyed movements of 'A New World To Forget'; they seem to reflect the feeling of happily pensive dog days, of arriving at new insights that wouldn't have been discovered had one not endured them.

JNJS - "Thinking About Money" (6:22)
Electricano & Adroit - "Space Adrift" (6:56)
Review: Latvian label Micronica is back in action with another round of its various artists series, shining a light on some emergent talent from the minimal tech house scene. First up on Volume 3 is Daniel Broesecke with 'Black Matter', a swirling, hypnotic joint draped in exquisite synth work. DIN follows that up with the tricky percussive wrangling of 'In Mind' - a quintessential minimal workout if ever we heard one. JNJS brings a little more uptempo funk to 'Thinking About Money' with some playful speech samples woven into the mix and Electricano & Adroit follow a similar approach with their slinky workout 'Space Adrift'.

Dragonfly (feat Ioana) (6:47)
Magnetic Alignment (7:34)
Review: Anyone with even a passing interest in minimal will down that Romania has always been a hotbed of such sounds and always with its own distinctive edge. That is true again of this newly emerging Storytellers label which welcomes Boyz here for some heartfelt sounds. 'Stellar' rolls deep with subtle vocals sound and wispy synth lines bringing melancholy to an elastic bassline. 'Internal Flight' is a little quicker and more loopy with a hypnotic psychedelic edge. 'Dragonfly' (feat Ioana) is a deft celestial delight with more elegant synth smears and sleek beats and 'Magnetic Alignment' layers up bubbly progressive chords and silky smooth drum lines to captivating effect.

Jamhar, Franko Lopez - "Lost Act" (7:00)
Matteo Point - "Great Weekend" (6:50)
Review: After the first volume went down so well it's no wonder we now get treated to The Sound Of Garden Vol 2 Part 2. This various artist affair comes right from the cutting edge of minimal house and tech with Lee Burton opening up in bold, strident, bouncy fashion as he allows zippy acid to flash about his full-bodied beats. Maggio's 'Rolling Phunk' is just that - perfect effective rhythms with machine soul. Jamhar and Franko Lopez then combine for 'Lost Act' which brings more undulating drums and techno-leaning synths before closer Matteo Point shuts down with the future-facing prog pomp of 'Great Weekend.'

Everybody Wants To Be Somebody (instrumental) (6:00)
Review: US label Nervous played a key part in shaping emerging hue sounds of the 90s and beyond. It is as active now as ever, working with new artists but also reissuing the classics. One of those classics is 'Everybody Wants To Be Somebody' which here gets offered up as a new version by Classmatic vs Ruffneck feat Yavahn. The original hooky vocals feature with some piano stabs and turbocharged tech beats. It's likely to do damage this summer and comes as an instrumental for those who like it more paired back.

Take Eat (9:21)
Last Moments Of Sunset (8:15)
Review: Costin RP may be well entrenched in the Romanian scene, but his sound isn't particularly beholden to the assumed Rominimal sound. On his latest missive for Pleasure Zone he demonstrates this perfectly with the limber synth flex of 'Take Eat', the kind of stand out slice of after hours brain fodder which absolutely deserves its own side of vinyl to stretch out on. The flip side cut is pointedly titled 'Last Moments Of Sunset' and while the balmy, woozy sound may well sink into the horizon comfortably you could just as easily picture it working a warm-up slot in a club or lighting the way through a murky after hours set.

Review: D'Julz is one of those producers who you can always rely on to do the business. His sounds are made for DJs and dancers - they establish a raw groove then keep you locked without any fads or cheap drops. This latest outing on Chiwax is another gem from the Frenchman with the stripped-back and lo-fi chunky of 'Murky' kicking off before 'Ruff' brings scuffed-up and well-swung drums. 'Jackie' is an old-school sound that nods in the direction of original Chicago house and 'Raw' keeps it deep and tight with a moody bassline and plenty of eerie melodic touches.

Deep Undercover (6:38)
Review: Since re-emerging earlier this year, mid-90s Leeds label Hard Times (a spin-off from the now legendary club night of the same name) has released some killer material from Steve 'Silk' Hurley and Eddie Leader. Here they tap up another US house legend, Chicago's inimitable DJ Sneak, for an EP of typically loopy, funky and hard-edged workouts. Sneak lets us settle in with the groovy and attractive loop jam 'You're Mine', before wrapping alien disco strings and held-note chords around a bumpin' beat on 'This One'. He opts for a crunchier, tech-tinged house sound on the gently twisted 'Body Slangin', before rounding off a rock-solid EP via the hybrid acid/deep house/disco-house pressure of 'Deep Undercover'.

The Island Groove (7:48)
Dream Body (Lucid mix) (6:45)
Review: De La Isla EP marks a compelling debut for Espiritu Recordings, showcasing Dojo Zone's versatile production prowess across five tracks. 'Dream Body (Exotica Mix)' kicks off with a potent blend of techno and progressive house, a dynamic journey through pulsating beats and twisted mood swings. 'Houdini Hauz' follows suit, infusing 80s-inspired sounds into a modern tech house, resulting in a groove-laden sonic landscape reminiscent of new wave aesthetics. The EP takes a detour with 'Obscure Entrance,' paying homage to Detroit's rhythmic heritage with its bubbling acid lines and 808 state-esque sounds. 'Bandu Bandu' is another goodie, that ventures deeper into the realms of futurism, with its serious and contemplative tones layered over intricate textures, offering a profound listening experience. Dojo Zone's masterful fusion of retro influences with contemporary production techniques makes this inaugural release from Espiritu Recordings a promising start for the label, setting high expectations for future endeavors.

Trouser In The Heat (7:43)
Review: Thisisnegentropy's fourth outing looks all the way to Bangkok's own DOTT who runs the More Rice Record store in Bangkok and has studio skills to spare. He heads down a minimal path here with 'Dem Swing' a kinetic mix of dry hits and well swung kicks and tripped-out FX. 'Mind Designer' then gets deeper, with more lovely hits this time landing on tight drum patterns that are detailed with whirring synths and chopped-up vocals. The flip side is taken up by 'Trouser In The Heat', a more manic cut with dense percussive layers and edgy synths that never settle and always keep you guessing. Another fine statement from this top Thai talent.

Landing (Kyle Hall remix) (5:11)
Review: Label boss El Prevost makes a welcome return to No Speakers after something of a break. Thankfully the quality levels remain high here as he kicks off with 'Catastrophizing', a brilliantly bass-heavy cut with broken beats to make you sweat. On the flip, 'Landing' has a more inward sense of reflection with its fizzing synths and deep space atmospheres making an indelible mark. Last of all, the magic of Detroit looms large with a superb remix by Motor City mainstay Kyle Hall. His version of 'Landing' brings some jazzy melodic vibes and one of his trademark deep house and bumping grooves. Another essential 12" from No Speakers.

Assuming it is the same one, he had one of the most standout tech house cuts of the second wave some 15 or so years ago on Nick Curly's influential Mannheim label Cecille. Here he joins up with Filou on Pleasure Zone for a trio of smartly designed and slick deep tech cuts. 'Esie' is one to zone out to in the dead of night, 'Static' has a more suspensory and edgy feel with its unresolved loops and 'Digging' shuts down with the best synth work of the lot - deft lines, neon hues and curious chords all add colour to the icy beats.

Review: After a superb debut release, Forgotten Coordinates is back with a follow-up from the eponymous artists behind the label and once again this is a tasteful excursion into the realms of minimalism and tech. 'Be Good To Me' pairs a snappy tech house drum and clap combo with some spaced out and intergalactic pads and a stone code classic vocal that will cause dance floor carnage. Things get punchy for 'Let's Get This' with its warped low ends and amped-up beats all seven to get you on your toes and vibing. Two classy and effective tunes for sure.

Review: Fresh & Low's EP, originally released in 1996, has now made a triumphant return in 2024, captivating audiences once again with its timeless house/deep house vibes. The EP features a dynamic range of tracks that showcase their signature style, with standout songs like 'Mistral' and 'Funky Daz" setting the tone for a melodic journey through the realms of electronic music. "Mistral" boasts a classic deep house sound, characterized by a catchy bassline and reverberating melodies that create a smooth and immersive listening experience. The 'Power Mix' takes a new approach, infusing elements of New York house with the addition of female vocals and tribal influences. On the other hand, "Funky Daze" keeps the momentum going with its breezy and cool atmosphere, driven by a catchy bassline and melodic daze. Closing out the EP is 'The Way You Feel', a vibrant and groovy track that exudes upbeat house vibes while maintaining a deeper, tribal undertone.

Review: Docile Recordings says it likes to think of its sounds as evoking nostalgia for future times, and for resonating familiarly while constantly evolving. Next up is a 32nd outing that spans from pragmatic spiritual funk to loose, head-banging frivolity. A Garcia is the man behind it and opens with 4/4 minimalism with soulful synths and smart percussion on 'A Different Time' which is advanced by ringing highs and detuned horns. 'The Best Of Times' is another blend of innovative sound designs and low-key, rolling drums and 'Til The Wheels Fall Off' then gets more edgy with more stark hits and unbalanced drum loops. 'Ringin' & Swayin' shuts down with the eeriest harmonies and glassiest melodies of the lot to make for a curious and intriguing EP.

With the latter artist having thus far been crowned 'the voice of house' for his various features for the likes of Fatboy Slim, Mark Knight, Todd Terry, Roger Sanchez and Bob Sinclair, and the former having more recently taken the house circuit by storm with her fiery productions released via the likes of Black Book and Tuskegee, 'This Is My Life' is a worthy addition to the pair's shared jackin' house repertoire; a repeated affirmation to 'dance all night', to 'feel all right' in spite of the pressure and to find ultimate salvation in the music.

Review: Two enigmatic raw deep house cuts from Gene Hughes aka. Bluemoon Productions, debuting for HotMix for the first time. Technically first released in 1990 via Code Blue, this remastered vinyl edition is as pure a slice of otherworldly house realness you can get. The mood throughout is nocturnal, fade-to-black, lamplit, verging on wild - opener 'D' is darkly jazz-chorded and peppered throughout with the sound of hyenas cackling, as if to suggest a nighttime jamboree at the edge of civilization; then there's the Latin guitar glidings-above of 'R' and the beautifully, unusually wompy drumwork-dreamwork of 'A'; and finally, closer 'S' takes the form of a sonic flex: the slowest breakbeat track we've encountered in a while, whose choppy slices, feel-it vocals and deep Reeses force us to consider our unconscious associations around bassweight and floor-readiness.

Review: Functional house experts Toolroom are back with Toolroom Sampler Vol 11 which is again packed with maximal club cuts for big dancefloors. Martin Ikin's 'Make U Sweat' is indeed sweet tech that never stops pumping under libidinous vocals. Flashmob's 'My Body' is loopy and manic tech with peak time intent and Nathan Barato and Matheo Velez offer up the macho grooves of 'Weapon.' Last of all, Jenn Getz & Alfie offer another slight tweak on try Toorloom sound with the grey and gritty white knuckle beats of 'Vibration.' A great EP for working DJs looking for instant impact.

Pesadillas (6:34)
Listo Para El Space (6:39)
Dai Fra (7:07)
You High (6:23)
Review: ILDEC is a perfect match for the cosmic odysseys served up by the superb Sex Tapes From Mars label and here unveils a four-track journey where each piece acts as a stellar beacon in the realm of groove. Ildec's blend of thudding drums, warbling basslines, and tingling synth leads transcends conventional techno's usual boundaries and adds plenty to root 90s influences while blurring terrestrial and extraterrestrial boundaries. There is a great depth to 'Pesadillas,' hypnotic propulsion to 'Listo Para El Space' and weightless disco-inspired allure to 'Dai Fra' which all make for fresh listening and dancefloor fun. 'You High' serves as both an anthem and proclamation, celebrating electronic music's boundless potential for transcendence.

Review: Ildec has become an increasingly vital artist in the last couple of years. His quality and tasteful output nudges at the boundaries of house and tech with unique sense of character. That's true again here on a new EP for Exarde that starts with a darker sound and snappy tech drums. Otis & Paul Lution remix with a hint of electro pop and futurism and 'Solo Para Adultos' then brings some shimmering synths to kinetic kicks and claps. 'Koala' is a textured stomper with an industrial cosmic edge.

She's A Whaaat? (6:02)
Bass Face (5:10)
Review: A nostalgic journey back to the early 90s hip-house scene in Italy and the UK, reminiscent of the vibrant days of early raves. Side-1 kicks off with 'Dancing Queen,' a hip house track that channels the energy of Disco Magic UK tracks from the early 90s, featuring vocals from Queen Latifah. 'Jack You Out The Box' follows suit, delivering a classic hip-house vibe that's sure to get bodies moving on the dancefloor. Flipping over to Side-2, 'She's A Whaaat?' presents a jacking house beat and groove, accompanied by catchy lyrics from Missy Elliott layered on top. Closing the EP is 'Bass Face,' a slamming dance track characterised by deep bass and infectious energy. Overall, Upgrade EP is a must-listen for fans of early 90s hip-house, offering a collection of tracks that capture the essence and excitement of that era while infusing it with fresh energy and style.

Utopia (7:13)
Review: Infinity Plus One has been working out of the London underground since the late '90. The veteran producer has always kept a low profile and let his music do the talking. Now he lands on Cyphon Recordings with a rare four-track EP of Detroit-infused, future-facing house and techno that is marbled with the characterful and compelling lyricism of JaronX. Context is Broken' leads with JaronX's poignant critique of global media, followed by heavy-duty house beats and striking vocals. 'Say The Truth' offers a glitchy, syncopated roller, 'Identity Keeps Changing' is a morphing techno track with '90s rave influences, while 'Utopia' rounds off the EP with transfixing techno that is wrapped up in deft synths, drones and wispy pads from the future.

Review: If you like your tech dark and twisted then lock into this one from Sleep is Commercial. It is a collaborative affair which opens with Ada Kaleh & Nathan Oye layering up dark basslines and grading pads with all manner of ghoulish voices and alien effects. Wareika & Nathan Oye then offer up 'The Weirding Module' which is a deep and bubbly blend of liquid bass, deft snares dancing over the kicks and heady, soft focus pads. It's pure late night dancing material then last of all Ada Kaleh & Wareika combine for 'Evocations', a silky and seductive minimal sound with delicate tones and the most subtle vocal touches.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Kepler is a man on fire right now - well, he has been for some time in fact. As well as serving up a new collaborative outing with Burnski, he has also put together this solo EP for Pilot. 'Zone' is a twitchy tech cut with bleeping melodies over silvery and silky tech drums. 'Good 2 Me' has a naughty shuffle to it as the crisp drums bring the infectious groove and the smart vocals add human colour. 'The Beat' kicks off the B-side with a nice squelchy bassline and some rude-boy sonic signifiers while 'Back Moving' then has a lovely low-slung swaying funk to it.

Free Your Mind (Deep mix) (5:35)
Review: Welcome to the brand new Thirst label which launches itself into the world of vinyl with a tasteful first outing from two names who will be more than familiar to any house and tech heads. Kepler and Wickham have long been mainstays on plenty of cultured labels are show their class here: opener 'The Recipe' is a physical house cut with a warped low and lively percussive splatters over the drums. 'Octa' is a more uptempo jam with knick-snapping hits and metallic beats, 'Represent' is a perfect fusion of textured drums and loopy bass that has a subtle sense of bounce and last of all 'Free Your Mind' (Deep mix) brings some syrupy pads and smart spoken words to paired back house drums.

Say What? (Aldonna remix) (6:35)
Review: Known Artist brings some seriously old skool energy to this new EP on Club Mix. It is the label's second outing and is another belter that kicks off with the impassioned vocal yelps, rave energy and hefty drum breaks of 'Get Up' (club mix). 'Get Up' (Alex Kassian remix) is a more stripped back house version but still one that races along with captivating energy and 'Say What?' (club mix) on the flip launches to the heart of the party with a brilliant old school trance-dance vocal layered into prog-techno drums that pump hard. The Aldonna remix shuts down with some smart filter work and upbeat drums.

Review: La Zic is an alias of Cristina Lazic and it also means 'music' in French slang. She is Italian-born, London-raised and blends minimal, deep tech and melodic house on labels including Crosstown Rebels, Moan, Bondage Music and TBX. Her own stable is a place for her finest work and is also a platform to champion fellow women in the scene. This EP is a great window into her world where supple drums and sublime synths all make for elastic, gooey, trance inducing rhythms underpinned by nice warm bass. The Nu Zau remix is a particularly fresh take on liquid tech house here.

Don't Let Go (Funk mix) (7:11)
Searching Through (5:16)
Review: Jamie Leather looks back to some early and dreamy 80s house sounds with his new EP on Gosu. Opener 'Transcript' has a bit of everything - prog chords, cosmic energy, sleek, bouncy techno drums and a playful optimism. The synths dart about the mix in more rigid fashion on 'Mid 2000s' which actually sounds more mid-80s and 'Don't Let Go (Funk mix' brings splashy cosmic pads, zippy and serrated synths over jerking house bates. 'Searching Through' closes with a little extra Chicago snap and some retro-future synth sounds that bring great colour and inventive patterns.

XTC (6:32)
Review: After a noteworthy first release, the Hidden Folder label is back in the spotlight with a new EP from Christopher Ledger. Talk Up Straight kicks off with the title track and it's the sort of tune to get any floor up on its toes and raving thanks to the slapping hits and twisted synths that bring life to the tough beats. 'Do It Like That' then brings a naughty bassline and fresh house bounce to a track with hints of retro filth. 'Almost There' is a more smooth groove that locks you into the warm synth smears and driving house drums then last of all is 'XTC' which has a menacing edge to it amongst the bristling percussion and future tech drums.
