Cat: SL45027. Rel: 18 May 23
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (2:57)
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (Flying Fish dub) (2:57)
Review: Here's a cover which can't fail to please a huge crowd, as Betty Black takes on Eurythmics' eternal 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. Black has been hitting her stride as a modern day soul diva after moving on from her accomplished roots voicing some iconic UK garage tunes, and her cover of 'Cry Me A River' is no joke either. Backed up by The Family Fortune and bringing an undeniable 60s sass to her performance, she makes the track her own. As well as the full vocal version on the A-side, the B-side has the slightly edited, dubbed out 'Work Out' version for when you want to work up a sweat.

Review: Tears For Fears might have been away for twenty years, but they have finally re-convened for a brand new album. And The Tipping Point sure is an ambitions one, but an accomplished one, that goes deep and offers up real emotional force akin to their famously introspective 1983 debut, The Hurting. With plenty of bold and powerful songwriting this is a record that will draw in your new fans and appease the diehards of old. Getting lost in this is almost like they were never away. Welcome back.

Review: Preceded by a single of the same name last year, The Tipping Point marks the return of one of the most inventive pop groups to ever do it. In the 1980s, Tears For Fears expanded the possibilities of what a commercial song could be with sophisticated songwriting, unabashed bombast, unexpected curveballs and jaw-dropping hooks. Given the influence they've had, they might not sound so revolutionary amongst the generations of pop acts who have followed their lead, but they return vital and full of purpose. Embracing new sonics but staying true to the songwriting as the central focus of the Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal's project, it's a triumphant return from a truly seminal group.

Review: The debut album from soul, pop and r&b singer-songwriter Teddy Swims, I've Tried Everything But Therapy, is a knowing exercise in pop humour, and an inverted critique of the 21st-Century celebrity condition. Manifesting as a concept first and foremost, Swims stated in an interview that he would put himself "into therapy" only after the album came out, and would until then continue to indulge every other soul-allaying vice - "buying myself a couple more months of freedom, of being a traumatised little s***" - building extensively on the "men will do anything but go to therapy" Internet meme. Even so, the album is a collection of healing songs, dealing with complex issues from substance abuse to tumultuous breakups and is a compelling one at that.

Review: Pop's newest sensation Teddy Swims drops his latest project I've Tried Everything But Therapy, evoking to the New Zealander's unquenchable thirst for the outbound excesses of life. Intended, in his own words, as his last music project before he goes into therapy, the album mixes plodding pop ballads, pristine vocal deliveries, and motivational highs-and-lows to produce a confident array of songs in the key of life. All the tracks are massive cinematic uplifts, a mood which ensured by its booming production, and themes dealing with heartbreak, baggage, memory and exigency.

Review: Cooltempo Records kicks of its new series of compilations and reissues starting with this Best Of gem from Kenny Thomas. He is a British soul icon with a buttery smooth voice right up there with any of his more celebrated US peers across the pond. He was nominated for two Brit Awards and had two Top Ten albums and several Top 40 singles across a career that spanned three decades, selling more than a million copies of his debut album The Voice, appearing on Top of the Pops and touring extensively. This reissue of The Best Of Kenny Thomas is packed with his finest chart hits of the 1990s with rare some mixes and two previously unreleased tracks also included.

Review: Legendary American pop artist, singer-songwriter and dancer Justin Timberlake is back with his first new album in six years. Following 'Man of the Woods in 2018, he now drops his sixth full-length studio long-player Everything I Thought It Was. It has been teased by early singles 'Selfish' and 'Drown' and does everything you expect from a Timberlake album - it gets the juices going, emotions flowing, and will make you want to dance. Plenty of big hooks and flashy riffs all make it another perfectly formed dance-pop gem.

Review: Jupiter were kings of the middle of the road indie sound that dominated back at the turn of the millennium. If you don't remember the name you will remember the music as they topped charts and got heavy TV play, not least for most notable single 'I Wish You Would'. All in all this is an album of heartwarming and emotional indie pop niceness you're likely to fall head over heels for again, hence the fact it has been covered by innumerable stars since its initial release. In many ways, once you know the story the track takes on a very different form - far less amorous and much more about longing and lamentation. This latest reissue comes in red and black marble vinyl.

Review: Pop stans rejoice: here be the third studio album by former YouTube star and queer pop icon Troye Sivan. It's also his first in five years, following his acclaimed 2018 album Bloom and his 2020 EP 'In A Dream'. The album is described as "a celebration of sex, dance, sweat, community, queerness, love and friendship", and was influenced by both popular and avant-garde music styles, as well as Sivan finding increasing freedom in the bombast of dance music in the post-pandemic era. Martin, OzGo and A.G. Cook, among others, are enlisted for production duties, second only to cameos from Charli XCX, Sam Smith and Lorde.

Review: Tyla is an already hotly-tipped South African singer and songwriter but the release of this new self-titled album is sure to take her to the next level and be one of 2024's biggest and best. It's a fusion of r&b and amapiano - a mix of house, jazz, downtempo and rich melody from her native South Africa - that is topped with her seductive and soft vocals. Channeling the likes of the great Aaliyah, it's been proceeded day the captivating lead single 'Waze' and is full of heart melting moments of tender r&b beauty. It has been two years in the making and was recorded in Jamaica so is pulled with subtle sunshine that makes it all the more perfectly timed.
