Ordinarily we'd be surprised to see a drum & bass outfit - especially one with Metalheadz connections - appearing on R&S, but in truth it fits with the current trend for nostalgic dancefloor workouts that doff a cap to the early years of jungle and D&B culture. That's not to say that Shot In The Dark is hollow retro-futurism; in fact, the punchy, alternately creepy and melancholic 'Abyss' is closer in tone to the output of Exit Records and other experimental D&B/bass music material, while the breathless 'Dance Girl' appears to be built upon a rhythm laid down by a drummer and then mercilessly pitched-up and cut-up. The EP's two '90s style drum & bass cuts, 'Shot in the Dark' and 'This One' are also impactful and steer well clear of hollow nostalgia.
