It's no secret that as integral as Emperor were to Norwegian black metal, they were always at sonic war with their genre's rigid confines.
Primary songwriter, frontman and all round legend of the scene, Insahn, would continually push his bandmates and challenge fans with each subsequent project, to expand and explore the parameters of the audible aesthetic they themselves had helped to foster.
'Prometheus: Discipline Of Fire & Demise' operates less as a black metal album and more as a rock opera, complete with theatrical instrumentation, interludes and dynamic vocals, ranging from the trademark Scandinavian shrieks to tenor register bombast.
Initially maligned and misunderstood upon release, the fourth and subsequently final Emperor full-length has amassed a definitive cult following as the experimentation within the scene became more commonplace and accepted.
Complex, hypnotic, and seemingly impenetrable, it feels as if the black metal scene has only recently caught up to where Insahn was pushing the genre twenty years prior.
