It would be fair to say that Gestu De Dakar's sole album, 1981's Ibrahima Sylla-produced "Diabar", is not widely known, though it has long been sought-after amongst collectors of West African music. This official reissue offers a meticulously re-mastered version of the sublime original set, along with a four-page booklet that fleshes out the story of the little-known collective. Musically, it's a hugely vibrant affair, with traditional African percussion and vocals being joined by jazz instrumentation (think clarinets, saxophones, trumpet) and electrified guitars and bass more associated with funk and Turkish psychedelia. It's a vibrant, turn-of-the-80s take on African music that gets better with each successive listen.
