Compiled by tropical obsessive Hugo Mendez (he of Sofrito fame), Haiti Direct traces the development of the country's native music scene from 1960 to 1978. Sitting somewhere between calypso, Cuban rhythms, expansive Latin jazz and tropical blues (see DJet-X's brilliant "Jive Turkey"), Haitian music inhabits a space all of its own, soaking up influences and repackaging them in new and unusual styles. It makes for a thrilling and enjoyable listen, making Haiti Direct a near essential purchase for curious listeners and tropical addicts alike.
