Given that it's been five years since Shed man Rene Pawlowitz last put out a Head High record, this expansive new EP feels like a genuine event release - in techno circles, at least. Interestingly, he seems to have packed away the banging, piano-driven techno thumpers of old, instead delivering a quintet of cuts that explore a wider range of interconnected old school influences. "Set Me Free", for example, sees the experienced producer wrap rush-inducing chords and distant female vocal samples around a deep but booming, hardcore-influenced groove, while closing set "Hardcore" sits somewhere between vintage UK rave music and the polyrhythmic exploits of Livity Sound and Hodge. Other highlights include the off-kilter, head-in-the-clouds shimmer of "Virtual Girl" and the ghostly broken techno snappiness of "Higher The Break".
