Innov Gnawa has long been one of New York's most intriguing propositions. The six-piece outfit specializes in Moroccan "gnawa" music, a style played with traditional North West African instruments and characterized by cyclical, chanted vocals. For this first EP for two years, the band has joined forces with Brooklyn-based producer Dave Harrington, who does a good job in adding a little contemporary cosmic spice (think reverb and dub delay) to their otherwise ancient sound. While these touches are largely subtle and sensitively handled, they certainly raise the music - which is both charming and strangely addictive - to a whole new level.
