Originally cast as a folk singer rather in the Damien Rice mould, James Vincent McMorrow has managed a sterling job of subverting expectation on the pathway to this, his third record. Not content with simply embracing R&B and electronic abstraction (a move which has even led to luminaries like Drake sampling him) he now takes a notable lurch into the experimental deep end with this abstract, futuristic and uncompromising opus, the clues to which can be firmly found in opening track title 'December 2914' - on this evidence however, it's a move that suits him well, with these beat-driven textures, James Blake-esque ethereal forays and honeyed falsetto croons marking him out as an unlikely maverick to be reckoned with.
