James Yorkston certainly got the cream of Sweden's musical crop when he enlisted the services of The Second Hand Orchestra. In turn, clan leader Karl-Jonas Winqvist called upon the services of Peter, Bjorn & John's Peter Moren, Cecilia Osterholm, a Swedish nyckelharpa-playing great, piano and cello maestro Emma Nordenstam and expert violinist Ulrika Gyllenberg.
Accomplished would be one word to describe the fruits of their collective labour. 'Struggle', something of a centrepiece to the release, is tender, optimistic but also road-weary journeyman folk of the highest calibre. The sort of track that feels like it has been on your personal soundtrack forever. 'There Is No Upside' contrasts, an air of pessimism to the pacy, violin and vocal-led number and growing mania about its wild rhythm. 'Ella Mary Leather' opens the scoring with the piano equivalent of a dramatic chase sequence. And if you're not sold on it by now you never will be.
