There's a brilliant simplicity to "When I Get Home", the lead cut from Marquis Hawkes' latest outing on Houndstooth. Built around a classic R&B vocal sample that's expertly manipulated to fit in with his crunchy, garage-influenced house beats and drowsy chords, the track has an effortless sweetness that belies its clear dancefloor punch. There are plenty of surprises elsewhere, too, with "The Witness Stand" offering an authentic tribute to the stuttering drums, tactile synths and rubbery basslines of '80s freestyle. While the storming, sweaty, Cajmere style bump of "What A Relief" is arguably the EP's most obviously floor filling moment, it's the cheery UK garage revivalism of "Sweet" that really sparkles.
