Sometimes it's easy to convince yourself that real psychedelic rock went the same was a magic eye posters and socially acceptable group sex. Then you catch a glimpse of Monster Magnet's latest album cover and realise there's still a place for both those things, not to mention demonic beings with flames and pyramids on their head surrounded by scantily clad women and skeletal figures. Talk about failing to manage expectations.
Thankfully the filling is every bit as good as the trailer in this instance. Then again, with a track list like this what wouldn't be? Following up on the unbridled originality of their preceding album, the hilariously titled Mindfucker, A Better Dystopia sees the band turn their attention to the often unsteady and unpredictable ground of covers records, and pull theirs off with aplomb. Paying tribute to the likes of Hawkwind and The Scientists, it's more than a fitting ode to the 1960s and 70s heydays of existential crises.
