Crooning has been back in fashion for well over a decade, albeit crooning through the eyes (or voice) of millennial and now Gen Z artists. Crooning that marries the classically smooth lyricism of the Brat Pack, soul and jazz, with elements of hip-hop, R&B and electronic music. With this in mind Rex Orange County came along at the right time, even if he was late to join the likes of Frank Ocean at the party.
'Bcos', his youthfully abbreviated, graffiti-scratched-into-school desk debut album - here on vinyl for the first time - certainly made a bold statement of intent. From the most traditionally soulful, perhaps the guitar-vocal whistle infectiousness of pared back "Corduroy Dream", to the loosest and jazziest ("Portrait Of Ned"), and the hippest and hoppiest (the delightfully offbeat and politically astute "Green Eyes (Part 2)", it remains a pleasure from start to finish.
