Look up Roland Kirk in any directory or encyclopedia of jazz musicians, and you'll discover the true wonders of what the human body can do for music. Kirk was world-renowned for his unique use of the circular breathing technique - a traditional form of breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth at the same time - so as to achieve the monumental feat of playing multiple reed instruments at once. He also played single-handledly towards the latter years of his life; and with that in mind, we must give him credit for his live spectacles. His appearance at Ronnie Scott's in 1963 was like no other; in this classic performance, originally laid to tape, he played one tenor and two alto saxes, a 'noise flute' and a siren.
