Romeo Poirier's previous solo album, Hotel Nova, rightly won plenty of plaudits. It's likely that this superb follow-up, which lands two years after its predecessor, will be similarly acclaimed. Fluid and rhythmic despite an almost total lack of discernible percussive elements, Living Room offers a decidedly aquatic-sounding ambient dream-scape subtly informed by horizontal jazz, and crafted using a mixture of tape loops, experimental techniques, unusual instrumentation, and a palette of samples created by his musician father. It's hard to pin down, sonically majestic and, tonally, shape-shifts between picturesque beauty, unsettling oddness and out-there intensity. It's a genuine triumph all told.
