Aussie Afrobeat and Afro-soul crew Shaolin Afronauts have released some terrific music over the years. While they've released more polished and complex music in recent years, we're still massive fans of their 2011 debut album Flight of the Ancients, which returns to wax in 2020 via a fresh pressing from Freestyle Records. It's a superb set all told, with the Adelaide-based combo strutting their way through both up-tempo and more laid-back fusions of Afro-beat and Afro-funk, each piled high with evocative horn lines, wah-wah guitar motifs, Tony Allen inspired drumming and seriously good solos from the band's talented players. Our current favourites include 'Flight of the Ancients', the irrepressible 'Kilimanjaro' and the spiritual jazz inspired closing cut, 'The Scarab'.
