The Nix is a loose collection of uniquely talented musicians corralled together by Nick McCarthy (ex-Franz Ferdinand) and Seb Kellig around their Sausage Studio in East London. The recording sessions were informal - the studios were open 24 hours and musicians would simply drop in - and as a result the album has a proper party feel, rooted in the traditions of DIY pop and punky reggae. Notable guests include Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab fame and the ever game for a laugh KT Tunstall, but none of the numerous cameos outshines or obscures the overall communal vibe of the album as a whole. Sure to put a smile on your face and an earworm in your system, this is addictive homegrown soul music that leans to Two Tone's more light hearted moments, Althea Forrest and Donna Reid's classic 'Uptown Top Ranking' or even Fun Boy Three and Bananarama getting down to it together. Pure, not trying too hard, class.
