Speedometer are an outfit with more than 20 years behind them, and they grew from a four-piece soul and funk covers crew in the South East of the UK to a serious creative entity with a towering discography. Most of their music comes out on Freestyle these days, and so the label have done the right thing and tracked back to reissue their early deep funk masterpiece, This Is Speedometer. It's got all the raw, in-the-room spirit you'd expect of a band cutting their teeth, which makes the music all the more exciting. From vocal jams like 'Wait Up' to the springy breaks-in-waiting of 'Mullet', this is pure heat from a seriously talented crew who play it like they mean it. They may be a little slicker these days, but there's so much to enjoy about these nothing-to-lose sessions from Speedometer.
