She Sold Her Soul
She Sold Her Soul (7"+ booklet limited to 300 copies)
Cat: DSCBOX 013. Rel: 22 Nov 23
Cizana - "She Sold Her Soul" (3:52)
La Nueva Generacion - "Uhru Sasa" (3:26)
Review: It might be getting cold and dark and wet here in the UK but music will always be able to transport us to warmer, sunnier, happier climes. And so it is with this new 7", which includes a booklet, from Discodelic. It's a two tracker from Cizana and La Nueva Generation that is flame hot and bristling with energy - Cizana's 'She Sold Her Soul' kicks off with its joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then La Nueva Generacion slow things down and up the brass with their carnivalesque Afro-funk workout 'Uhru Sasa'.

Cizana - "She Sold Her Soul" (3:51)
La Nueva Generacion - "Uhru Sasa" (3:25)
Review: Discodelic obviously rates this latest 7" of theirs because they have released it in more than one format. As well as a straight back wax version you can also cop it on this pink & blue splattered vinyl complete with a booklet that provides some extra context about the music from Cizana and La Nueva Generation. Both tunes are flame-hot and bristling with energy. The A-side is all joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then the flip slows things down and ups the brass. Two belters and this one looks as good as it sounds, too.

Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Its hook digs into our thighs deeper than a Sheriff's steel spurs, and fittingly, it's music video is themed after a 19th Century western town.

Review: If you've caught either Khruangbin or Leon Bridges live before, or indeed listened to anything by either band or producer-singer-songwriter, you'll know where this 20-minute EP is heading. The sleeve art, which gives more than a nod to the 1960s hippy movement, also offers a major clue.

Tripped out, smoked out, lackadaisical, bliss-infused overtures, honied and syrupy, easing you in so far that you don't quite realise how hard it is to crawl back out of the sugar-coated opiate haze. A collection of heady, hallucinogenic work for 21st Century high plains drifters, it's jazzy, psychy, lush soulful fare you'll be wanting to hear again and again, capturing the heat and slow pace of America's southern states with heartfelt songwriting from genuine masters. The result is something very special indeed.

Please Don't Be There For Me (2:57)
Review: Oddball hauntologists Ghost Box present one of their first band cover versions. First appearing to the label's A&Rs when Large Plants posted the song - a Madonna cover - to social media as an April fool's joke, Ghost Box refused to take it as such, and it is now being released as a 7" single. This is a no-nonsense psych take on the Madonna's classic bit of 80s balearism, except in good Ghost Box fashion, it sounds like it should have preceded the original. Clock the B-side 'Please Don't Be There For Me', a more driving, stimulating original blues bit.

Sea Gull (4:37)
Review: Several years before Uzi Kinrot, we were lucky enough to attend a cultural exchange, of sorts, between Lithuania's burgeoning electronic scene and Israel's fertile alternative music community. The results were staggering, and in addition to presenting the Balkan state as an epicentre of leftfield dance, it also made a strong case for the Middle East as a hotbed for the kind of music makers destined to score some Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch movie. Back up to date, and Les Dynamites, whose reputation has long reached beyond their Jerusalem hometown, have returned to emphasise the latter point. Uzi Kinrot is a groove-packed double-A side that feels alive with energy, perhaps thanks to the single-take recording process. It's twangy, psychedelic, nostalgic and yet utterly timeless stuff that yearns to be heard on a beach while you hide from the heat of afternoon sun.

Review: A rare and sought-after EP by French singer Charlotte Leslie, originally released in 1967, spanning sumptuously romantic soul, mod and ye-ye moods. Slower, starry-eyed waltzes like the leading 'Ca M'est Egal' are contrasted well with faster mod cuts like 'Les Filles C'est Fait', showing off Leslie's powerfully expressive voice, not to mention the arrangements and direction of fellow producer Yvan Jullien.

Fosas Limitadas (3:47)
Lux, Lumina (CC Crain remix) (4:42)
El Olivo (3:59)
Unificado (Pye Corner Audio remix) (7:57)
Review: Beguiling, intriguing, immersive and about as far from obsolete as you could ask for in an age when so much music seems happy to exist in a kind of pointless no man's land lacking anything like innovation, if not defined by total uselessness. Prepare to commend Lorelle, your new favourite psychedelic aural adventure, not to mention the much-loved London label Sonic Cathedral, if you're not already obsessed with it. There's more depth and substance to the four tracks offered here than many artists can manage in an album. '"Fosas Limitadas" has shades of Powell's earthier scuzz, "Lux, Lumina" is straight up hallucinatory fare, or at least CC Crain's remix - included here - fits that description. "El Olivo" is a tripped out odyssey that's at once beautiful and unnerving, while the closer, a Pye Corner Audio version of "Unificado" grows into a subtle but highly emotive wall of atmosphere over eight stunning minutes.

Los Desposeidos (3:16)
Tu Deseo (3:11)
Review: Bolivian psyche-surf rock, anyone? Welcome to the world of Los Laser, a beguiling yet immediately infectious outfit. Vuelven! first hit in the 1970s, at which point most of our fact-checked knowledge about this release comes to a sudden stop. And all the better for it. Rather than getting bogged down in brief biopics, then, let's just say this is definitely one for the guitar-loving diggers, who won't find it many other places. Sonically speaking there's plenty of reference points to what was happening across South America musically at the time. While steeped in conservative traditions (often due to the enforced religion through colonialism situation), the decades after World War II were fertile ground for anti-establishment youth movements across the world, and this continent was no different. So, while the exotic lyrics and jangling six strings don't scream "smash the system" today, you'd better believe this was well against the grain back in 1971.

Drums Off Chaos - "Drums Off Chaos"
Review: The sadly departed Jaki Liebezeit was the kind of drummer whose influence will be continually recognised over the decades to come. Best known for his work in Can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and Emotional Rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-Can period living in Stollwerck. On the A side of this 7" curio is the sound of Phantom Band with Linear Johnson & The Protons. "Rush Rush" has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still Liebezeit's drumming stands out. The B side "Drums Off Chaos" need little explanation - it's the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

Review: Pascal Comelade, Lionel LimiNana and Marie LimiNana come together for a new album, Boom Boom, which follows Traite de Guitarres, their first work as a trio released in 2015. This new recording is built on motifs performed in common: iffs, repetition and melodic conjurations. Comelade's keyboards are complemented by equally hypnotic guitar riffs and augmented by precious solos from Xarim Areste, Lalo Lopez and Ivan Telefunken, making for an arresting instrumental, cinematic French rock album for those seeking its essence.

Review: Ultra lo-fi stereo funkage from L'Eclair, the latest signage to Swiss label Rock This Town. 'Cruise Control' is a muddy and smoggy six-track instrumental disco-funk EP, with seven members laying down parts on wah-wah, space horn, and synth. It sounds as if a mega-talented disco troupe were performing in the next building, but they could only be heard through thick insulation or some kind of muffling foam. The tone is ultimately pleasing, blurry and cloudlike, as if this were disco beamed to us from heaven as opposed to the material world. The softest cuts, such as 'Safari In D', are our highlights.

Fear not, though, even if you're not up on the meaning of each word, the Gallic wonders easily entrance with their timeless sounds (in a 20th-into-21st Century meaning) which are equal parts seduction and innocence.

A dangerous combination, Teatro Lascido even takes its name from a romanticised mythology, specifically that surrounding one of Mexico's most legendary concert venues, which they played a number of times. Upbeat, strange, entrancing, accessible, sweet, odd and altogether compelling, to say the world would be a far less colourful place without these guys is an understatement.

Review: After setting European stages on fire with the release of their first LP in 2022, the almighty Turkish band Lalalar return with En Kotu Iyi Olur, an album that reflects their stated image: edgy, independent, political, and tremendously effective. With their roots in Anatolian poetry and culture - but focusing on a club-oriented, uncompromising rock - this is a remarkable album of previously-thought-to-be-impossible fusions, rendering Turkish music danceable and festival-ready, but also refusing to be pigeonholed in any easy manner of categoric speaking. Wild stuff.

Review: The Rubber Snake Charmers are a new super-band featuring desert rock legends Mario Lalli, Brant Bjork, Sean Wheeler and Ryan Gut. Their debut release as a band, this is a meeting-of-minds of pioneering desert rock musicians captured in their purest form, collaboratively exercising a desert-born ethic and approach to rock improv; psychedelic, flowing, heavy and explorative. The foundation of Lalli's groovingly heavy basslines and meditative themes coalesce with the intuitive guitar work from Brant Bjork and percussion of Ryan Gut, both of which set the scene for Sean Wheeler's poems and songs, capturing the dark and beautiful stories and images of life in the Mojave desert of Southern California. Desert rock in its purest form and a very special live performance straight from the heart of Australia's Gold Coast.

Review: Large Plants made quite a splash with their debut album on Ghost Box last year. Primarily the project of Jack Sharp, it was a noticeable swerve for the synth-heavy label towards classic 70s hard rock, but somehow it all fits together. That sense of destiny continues wholeheartedly with the swiftly delivered follow-up The Thorn, which features a shift in approach towards a more psychedelic, folk-inclined and prog-tickled sound. There's still plenty of heft in the rhythm section, but Sharp sounds much more pastoral in his tone, and the songwriting on this outstanding sophomore album follows suit.

This comes after two well received EPs and ahead of a big, high profile tour next to none other than The Strokes. There is an extra sense of energy to this new record that was hinted at with lead single 'Fuzz Jam' and is backed up by a fantastical world of colourful bursting hooks and blossoming rhythms. Irreverent, chaotic, wilful and essentially the sound of a band falling down the stairs, this platter remains a charge of out-of-control energy until any you'll come across in this somewhat chastening year.

Review: Re-issue of British experimental rock legend Edward Ka Spel and associates' 1995 album From Here You'll Watch The World Go By. The Legendary Pink Dots are an Anglo-Dutch experimental outfit formed in London in 1980. In 1984, the band moved to Amsterdam and started playing with rotating musicians. By this stage in his career ('95), Ka Spel had been living in Nijmegen for some time - which is now the city he calls home. Skinny Puppy's Nivek Ogre and Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer consider Ka Spel as a significant influence and he has in-fact gone on to collaborate with both artists. With Ogre in experimental act The Tear Garden and with Palmer on this year's "I Can Spin A Rainbow". This is considered as one of the group's finest moments by many of their fans.

Review: Ruud Lekx, the Dutch musician behind a string of releases as Rude 66 on Creme Organisation, has opted to ditch aliases for this haunting full-length. It's a well-tempered sonic barrage that pivots between experimental post-rock, cleaner coldwave moments, and industrial noise. The range of sounds, polyrhythmic 808 programming and discordant harmonies Lekx uses is impressive alone, but becomes chillingly arresting when coupled with his wife Shaunna's computerized and pseudo-schizophrenic vocals. This is not one for the faint of heart.

At the same time they never lost sight of their Kabyle heritage and as such really made a mark on the Maghrebi music scene all across the world from Algeria to France. It spans everything from their early garage-rock experimentations to lush orchestrations and North African fusion gems from the 1980s.

Review: Diamonds, Rhinestones and Hard Rain is the fourth album from the Stockholm institution Les Big Byrd, the band consisting of Joakim Ahlund (Caesars, Teddybears), Frans Johansson (Fireside), Christian Olsson and Nino Keller (Caesars). Having established a fearsome catalogue for themselves following their formation in 2011, the Stockholm psychonauts' most recent LP continues their notable taking back control of production duties - which began with their release Eternal Light Brigade - and here results in an expansion on their own authentic sound. The sound in question is a heady fusion of prog, alt-pysch and synthpop, glued together by a many-faced exploration of every end of this sound, from the refractive ambiences of 'Lycka Farden' to the downtempo IDM of 'Ensam...' and the post-punky slow smoulders of 'The Night Bus'.

Review: Formed in 1967 at Kyoto's Doshisha University, Les Rallizes Denudes were pioneering in the same way as The Velvet Underground, but their music remained a cult concern through a lack of official releases and a spread of bootlegged recordings. Fronted by enigmatic singer Takashi Mizutani, they presented an untamed noise-rock approach before the genre existed, fusing furious blasts of intensity, psychedelia and free jazz with melodic, folk informed passages. On this reissue, we're taken back to their time playing at shortlived but seminal rock club OZ, which captures this incendiary, little known group as their musical might was growing.

Review: Heavier Than A Death In The Family by legendary Japanese rock and psychedelic outfit Les Rallizes Denudes is a record that often gets bootlegged. Its is a dance, scuzzy wall of sound from the nose band that now gets a proper reissue treatment on limited edition 180 gram, red vinyl. It is a blistering collection of sounds, angular riffs, sleazy grooves and beautifully dark post-rock that are all taken from live recordings made originally in 1977. Tracks like 'Ice Fire' make it sound like the lead singer is drowning in feedback, while 'Night Of The Assassins' is as catchy as the band get.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Never residing at the top of the common conscience, Rallizes Denudes were a Japanese rock band spawned by the late-1960s, who managed to last two decades plus before disbanding, only to resurrect the project in the mid 1990s. At which point the shrieking, wailing, cacophonous guitar action sounded a lot less groundbreaking than in their formative years, with the noise scene overall having well and truly risen to prominence by that point.

By no means a criticism, as they always say originals do it better, and Denudes were unarguably well ahead of their time, and in many ways still are. This record is a case in point - a collection of live recordings from seven concerts played in and around the Tokyo metropolitan sprawl. Collated for the first time ever on record, having circulated among fans over the years between, it's a fascinating expiration of a triumphant group at their best.

Review: Pre-eminent Japanese noise rockers Les Rallizes Denudes have a complicated back catalogue which only adds to their enigmatic legacy, and here's another tantalising window into their chaotic sound. These psychedelic, lo-fi recordings hail from sessions in 1972 and 1980, with the A-side fully given over to the sprawling 23-minute 'Guitar Jam' - a potent exercise in driving riffs building to a monstrous crescendo. There is plenty more long form exploration to be found on the B-side, with 'A Tale Of Love' stretching out over 18 minutes before a previously unheard version of the band's classic 'Field Of Artificial Flowers', reordered during the 1972 Oz Days sessions.

Review: Embodying the idea of what a cult band should be, Takashi Mizutani's band Les Rallizes Denudes were a semi-mythical force originally formed in the late 60s in Kyoto and lasting for nearly 30 years, credited with helping pioneer the noise rock genre and absolutely unbound by the conventions of traditional rock music. They were primarily a live band and their available recorded works now consist of scattered demos and bootlegs, which makes this a very welcome release for fans. The first volume of sessions from Azabu opens with the sprawling 18-minute groover 'Yoru Yori Fukaku (part 2 - take 1.2)' which rolls something like Can at their most motorik, while 'Tori No Koe' swaggers and sways through swathes of feedback and looming bass. The raw, garage sound of the band is there to behold throughout this fantastic document - the real deal from a band it's never easy to get a handle on.

Review: Formed in 1967, Les Rallizes Denudes had high expectations. A group of students from the Doshisha University, Kyoto, they intended to release studio music, booked recording time, but were then disappointed with the results, so decided to only play live. Lead singer Takashi Mizutani, apparently partly spooked by a 1970 Japanese plane hijacking, only really emerging from solitude for occasional shows.
Nevertheless, there are a handful of bootleg records available to buy if you look hard enough, but this is the first time the outfit's 67-69 Studio Et Live has been released. It's certainly a wild trip, conjuring the spirit and sound of a time as we're told to remember it. A mixture of raucous and sweaty rock 'n' roll, almost spiritual folk, otherworldly blues, cacophonies, feedback and white noise.

Review: Temporal Drift drop the never-before-heard master tapes from Japanese cult legends Les Rallizes Denudes' legendary second comeback gig in 1993, after an unexpected slew of CD albums dropped in 1991. The band hadn't performed since the 80s, and came back for blood. Eyewitness accounts of the gig said that the abrasive squall of Takashi Mizutani and Katsuhiko Ishii's guitars that night had concertgoers pacing for the lobby to seek respite from the sonic furnace. After 30 years in storage, the multi-tracked recordings from the performance fell into the hands of former band member Makoto Kubota, who lovingly remastered them to give listeners a sense of the transcendental roar which The Rallizes unleashed that night. Highlights include the braindead rockabilly shuffle of 'Eternally now', and the steady, diesel-powered chug of 'Darkness Returns 2', which, like all other tracks on the album, is eventually pierced by the screeching peal of Mizutani's telecaster, which eats the whole mix up in true Rallizes style. A much mythologised live performance by a much mythologised band. Essential!

Review: Les Rallizes Denudes (Hadaka no Rariizu, 'The Naked Suitcases') were a Japanese rock band formed in 1967. Known for their loud, feedback-drenched sound - influenced by psychedelic rock, noise, and folk - the band rarely recorded in studios and mostly released live bootlegs and soundboard archives. Adjacently, they were notorious for their involvement in radical politics; their original bassist Moriaki Wakabayashi participated in the hijacking of Japan Airlines Flight 351 in 1970. Adding to the mystery is the secretive aura of its only constant member Takashi Mizutani. This newly released live album, Citta 93 - released by Temporal Drift, a former sublabel of Light In The Attic, dedicated largely to preserving the band's legacy - documents one of their rarer performances at Club Citta in Kawasaki on February 17, 1993. One of their last shows before they disbanded in 1996, the album hears several of the band's classic songs - including 'Night of the Assassins', 'Eternally Now', and 'The Last One' - played with a raw and powerful intensity that surpasses that of their earlier gigs.

Review: Japanese psych rock icons Les Rallizes Denudes originally formed in 1967, led by enigmatic frontman Takashi Mizutani and famed for their fearless embrace of distortion as a vital component of their sound. Through the decades the band went through many iterations and pauses, but they made a vital comeback in 1993 after five years of silence. Baus '93 captures the band in full flight at Baus Theatre in Tokyo, with Mizutani joined by Katsuhiko Ishii on guitar, Kiyohiro Takada on bass and Toshiro Mimaki on drums. Restored from original multitrack tapes and audience sources, it's a visceral document of the band's abrasive, hard-rocking sound captured here on red velvet double vinyl.

Review: Takashi Mizutani's legendary Japanese psych rockers Les Rallizes Denudes went through many iterations following their original formation in the late 60s. By the 90s, they had been on an extended hiatus which finally came to an end with a seminal performance at Tokyo's Baus theatre, which was faithfully captured on this multi-track sound desk recording. There's a vibrant urgency to the band as they rumble through four long-form cuts, peaking with the 30-minute peak 'Darkness Returns'. This CD edition of the remastered live album also comes with a DVD featuring footage from the gig captured by their visual collaborator Akira Uji.

Five tracks' worth of sonic sacred geometry are spread across two reissued sides; lo-fi garage crunchouts, noise truncations and cathartic let-looses come in the form of 'Field Of Artificial Flowers' and 'Deeper Than The Night' on the A, while the B-side delivers two deeper, more whacked-out, increasingly insane outsider hells, 'Memory Is Distant' and 'Field Of Artificial Flowers' (a name used twice, in true Denudes fashion).

Review: Lid was a project formed in the latter half of the 1990s by Daniel Cavanagh of UK greats Anathema, along with legendary vocalist Eric Wagner from US doom metal legends Trouble. Joining the two were Timothy & Tommy Reeves on bass & drums respectively. The fruit of this union emerged in 1997, with the classic sole album, In The Mushroom, combining the heavier rocking & melodic traits of both acts, plus an element of psychedelia. Along with what could be termed stoner rock, there was also a notable Beatles-esque quality to the project, which incidentally blends well with a stellar cover of the Beatles' classic, 'Don't Let Me Down', joining the cover of The Monkees' 'Randy Scouse Git' for a dynamic ride full of hooks, accomplished songwriting, and an injection of Wagner's poetic depth. In The Mushroom was produced by Eric Wagner, along with Vincent Wojno (having previously worked with Eric with Trouble). The album was mixed at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. This edition of In The Mushroom is presented on mid-price CD format including booklet with lyrics.

Review: Stylish and sultry in a way that's guaranteed to have time-honoured national stereotypes flying around within moments, Liminanas are a French two piece whose unique sound blends garage-driven psych with the French pop and ye-ye they grew up on - as damaged stylistically by Serge Gainsbourg, thus, as by The Brian Jonestown Massacre. 'Malamore', their third album to date, takes these influences and constructs a rich and seductive sound that's both cinematic and kaleidoscopic in appeal. Not even a guest appearance by Peter Hook on 'Garden Of Love' can stop these exquisitely arranged and sweetly debauched ditties from being possibly the most chic sound you're likely so stumble across after the midnight hour this year.

Review: With a lead-heavy legacy from the late 80s and early 90s, Loop surprised everyone when they reformed in 2013 for a series of live shows and an EP. Robert Hampson's riff-oriented psychedelia has a certain evergreen quality which splits the difference between shoegaze washes and stoner fuzz, slipping out of time somewhere between the 70s and the future and sounding all the richer for it. After 2015's Array EP, Loop return with a proper full-length - the format they were meant to be absorbed on. Sonancy is everything you'd want from a Loop record - epic in scope, thick with distortion and effects, but ultimately built for dreamers.

Review: Los Bitchos are barreling out of the London underground with a deadly focus and a sound which is sure to take them far. The four-piece place tequila and cumbia at the top of their interests, which should tell you plenty, and to date they've put out a few furtive 7"s which showcase their twanging, surfy psych sound. It's also got a sizable dub throb to it thanks to the heavyweight b-lines and plenty of reverb, and this debut album drop on City Slang is the perfect intro into their world of good time intoxication and serious musical chops. Every player is on point, and they sound like they know exactly what they're aiming for - expect to be shaking down to their sound in any number of festival scenarios this summer.

It wasn't until third album Forever Changes that, inspire of only moderate chart success, they got serious acclaim, with many citing this one as their chef d'oeuvre (and in fact it was even added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry in 2011). The record was the final one put together by the original line up and brimmed with sophisticated orchestral arrangements. Elements of folk, baroque pop and indie all colour the tracks, which were written by Arthur Lee on themes around his own lifestyle and environment.

Review: Love's Forever Changes album has the accolade of being on the Top 10 of Rolling Stone Magazine's legendary 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. It is full of dark and prophetic songs that anticipated the turmoil of the late 1960s and is widely said to be one of the best psychedelic rock albums ever recorded. This seminal record has been remastered and recut at half speed for extra good sound quality. That allows the magnitude of the sounds to really shine through and the complex acoustic properties to really shine.

Complete with macabre, gothic lyrics delivered with Platow's incomparable, sultry, almost Wiccan cadence, the project offers a hypnotic dirge of horror delivered with a gentle hand.
