Review: Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have more than proven their music knowledge across a stellar run of prior compilations, including The Daisy Age, Fell From The Sun and English Weather. This time around, they're tapping into the freeform climes of the late 70s and early 80s, as punk exploded and a myriad of bands channelled the unique, downcast mood of Britain into wildly creative, nervously urgent songs. Across four sides we take in all manner of cult selections and outer limits largely in the loose fit realm of post-punk. It's flawlessly selected and programmed - another reminder of how immersive a proper compilation can be.

They were just as important to those who attended as the more celebrated likes of Glasto' and this collection shows the sounds were just as good, too. The sounds - from big names liek Deep Purple, Hawkwind and Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw to lesser known acts like Jonesy, will appeal to hippies and bikers alike with big riffs, funky drumming and some psyched-out sounds.

Review: Powerful grooves from Mood Mosaic's latest series; most of the work here originates from the 70s, and a lot from those great years of the UK and US scene where it also seemed like there was plenty of folk in the music to boot. A few of these cuts are downright acid, and all are filled with great instrumentation; an approach that's a nice change from some of the more familiar Brit and US manners of the same generation. Review: Time Capsule exposes a few of the myriad pathways in Japan's 70s psychedelic soul wormhole, when a bountiful crop of music emerged from musicians inspired by homespun hero Haruomi Hosono's Happy End project, as well as the meandering ballads emerging from the dissolution of the 1960s protest movements. From the charming, Hosono-esque Francophile lounge funk of Hiroshi Kamayatsu's 'Have You Smoked Gauloise?' to the Tadashi Goino Group's strikingly sparse drum machine n' synth incantation 'Jikan Wo Koero Go Beyond Time', almost sounding like Goino is flanked by Vega and Rev at times, to the theatrical, almost duul-esque closing ballad 'Heya No Naka In The Room', the heads at Time Capsule assemble a compelling and kaleidoscopic anthology of forgotten Japanese gems.

Review: Two-Piers is one of those very special imprints that has tasked itself with unearthing the kind of gems people who compile movie soundtracks only ever seem to be able to find. In the past, the label's compilations have focused on essay-worthy things like the evolution of French pop (1964-2019, no less), and but in this case the team turns its attention to a bonafide zeitgeist.

Calling everything here 'rare' would be overstating it - we have legendary household names in the form of Nina Simone, Willie Nelson, and Tim Buckley, to name but a few. But nothing here is an obvious choice, calling to mind a bygone age when you could still find yourself discovering new material by chart-toppers years after falling in love with them because access to everything was limited. Aligned by a feeling - late nights spent stargazing with equally obsessed musos - what's here is marvelously timeless.

While little thematic centrality is present, the common thread between these selections is that they can surely be classified as wheat, not chaff, thanks to the curatorial power of one Paul Hillery. Review: There's a seemingly endless well of gnarly anti-flower power psych rock Riding Easy are able to tap into as they screech into their sixteenth volume of the kick-ass Brown Acid compilation series. The concept is tight, and if you dig on the sound you'll never tire of what's on offer here, whether it's The Seeds laying down a heavy-as-hell strain of distorted blues rock or the seriously funked up Nothing with 'Young Generation'. This is an authoritative peer into the nether regions of rock history and a thousand bands who never quite broke through to long-lasting success, but on these tunes they've got nothing to lose except their minds.

Review: Lounge Psychedelique: The Best Of Lounge & Exotica 1954-2022 is a third superb instalment in this series and is another deep dive into the world of lounge music from spaced out to bachelor pad ready. Spencer Hickman and Mark McQuillan are the Jedi-level diggers who have put this one together for Two-Piers and in doing so they find common ground between jazz, exotica, instrumentals and soundtrack grooves from legends of each respective scene such as Martin Denny, Yma Sumac and Herb Alpert, with lounge jazz from Cal Tjader and Latin bossa from Quincy Jones. It is a compressive overview that instantly improves your own collection no end.
