Review: Does The Cosmic Shepherd Dream Of Electric Tapirs? is not just a great - and amusing - question but also the title of Acid Mothers Temple's debut release on Space Age Recordings. This Japanese soul collective, known as Acid Mothers Temple and The Melting Paraiso UFO, remains an enigma to both the Western and Eastern worlds. Their music spans acid-rock, experimental, and psychedelic genres, varying with the listener's mood. After being out of stock for some time, the long-anticipated repress of this wild offering is now available on two solid green vinyl records and complete with the original seductive artwork.

Everyone's Leaving Me Now (4:57)
Review: The Blossom Toes' single Postcard is a gem, with the Side-1 offering a gentle, well-crafted pop song reminiscent of Sgt. Pepper's. 'Postcard's' light, jaunty melody is irresistibly catchy, earning comparisons to Paul McCartney's Beatles work. The Side-2, a jazzy minor-key lament, features a superb solo by Brian Godding, evoking the psychedelic vibe of the era. Overall, this obscure non-LP single stands out as a favorite Blossom Toes release, encapsulating the band's diverse musical influences and showcasing their talent for crafting memorable tunes.

Review: Imagine a Latin reboot of "Back to the Future" starring Arsenio Rodriguez as the mad scientist and Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers) as his time-travelling student. This album serves as the perfect imaginary soundtrack for that unmade film. Following the success of his debut solo album Mentallogenic, Alex Figueira returns with a more collaborative approach, crafting the second album of his expansive project, Conjunto Papa Upa. Embracing soul, funk, jazz, psychedelia, and electronics, Fruta Madura ("Ripe Fruit") navigates diverse tempos and rhythms, offering a refreshing blend amidst electronic-dominated tropical music. Figueira's distinctive production shines, showcasing his eclectic vision in a genre-defying journey through African, American and Caribbean traditions. With witty, mature themes and spirited compositions, this album promises to be a future classic in tropical psychedelic music.

Review: The Courettes deliver a dynamic garage rock experience with their collection of revamped classics on Hold On, We're Comin'. Vocalist/guitarist Flavia Couri and drummer/producer Martin Couri infuse each track with a Phil Spector-inspired wall-of-sound, breathing new life into timeless favorites. With guest appearances from legends like The Grass Roots, Sam & Dave, The Flamin' Groovies and Johnny Thunders, the album exudes energy and authenticity. The duo's contribution to The Cramps and upcoming Taylor Swift tributes further showcases their versatility and creative ideas. Hold On, We're Comin' is a shinning example to The Courettes' ability to honor the past while injecting their own electrifying spirit into classic rock'n'roll.

Review: Crumb's latest album, Amama, continues to enchant listeners with their signature blend of psych-rock, jazz and indie pop and, with 12 tracks, it's their most expansive offering yet. The three singles released ahead of the album promise a seamless continuation of Crumb's dreamy atmosphere and intricate melodies. Rather than a departure, these singles serve as a comforting reminder of the genres they've mastered, effortlessly combining smooth psych-jazz with bedroom and dream-pop elements. Lila Ramani's ethereal vocals, accompanied by Brian Aronow's synth wizardry, Jesse Brotter's solid basslines, and Jonathan Gilad's precise drumming, create a captivating sonic journey. With Amama, Crumb reaffirms their position as innovators in the indie music scene, delivering an album that is both familiar and refreshingly new.

Review: Crumb's new album, AMAMA, continues to find compelling new ways to dramatize the mundane. Midway through, 'Nightly News' captures a groggy, 49-second burst of cable-news synths, ending before revealing any actual news - a fitting tease from a band known for hypnotic, sinister epics. Frontwoman Lila Ramani's ethereal, unsettling vocals make AMAMA a dreamlike journey, reminiscent of the twilight hours. Their earlier albums, Jinx and Ice Melt, explored the space between night and dawn with their unique psychedelia. Now, with AMAMA, Crumb gets more playful and candid while maintaining their signature experimentation. Tracks like 'The Bug' and 'Side by Side' blend romance with vague mourning, pairing Ramani's poetry with inventive jazz-psyche that invokes peers like BADBADNOTGOOD and Hiatus Kaiyote. 'Crushxd' exemplifies Crumb's ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, with Ramani's lyrics mourning a flattened turtle, carried by a circular, foot-tapping rhythm. Throughout the album, Ramani's words often trail off, creating an open-ended, cinematic quality. Produced by Johnscott Sanford and Jonathan Rado, AMAMA sounds more expansive and authoritative than Crumb's previous work, cementing their place as psych-pop pioneers who blend disparate elements into a singular, evolving identity. AMAMA is a lucid dream, remembered vividly, scene by scene.

Released via At The Dojo Records, this double LP offers a diverse sonic journey, with the first record showcasing seven heavy, riff-driven tracks, including the scorching single 'Hands Of The Zodiac.' The second record presents six mellow, slower tempo jams, providing a balanced listening experience. With tracks like 'Loch Ness Wrecking Machine' and 'Solar Baptized,' Fu Manchu demonstrates their versatility while staying true to their roots. Recorded at The Racket Room in Santa Ana, California, by Jim Monroe and co-produced with the band themselves, The Return Of Tomorrow ensures optimal sound quality with both LPs pressed at 45RPM. Overall, Fu Manchu's enduring creativity and dedication to their craft, making this new album a treat for fans of the band.

Review: The Grateful Dead's seminal album From the Mars Hotel is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a picture disc edition. Originally released on June 27, 1974, this album follows Wake of the Flood, marking a pivotal period for the band. During this time, they played some of their largest venues with their 75-ton Wall of Sound amplification system, introducing songs like 'Scarlet Begonias,' 'Ship of Fools,' and 'U.S. Blues.' Remastered by engineer David Glaser with Plangent Processes tape restoration, this includes demos of 'China Doll' and 'Wave That Flag' (the precursor to 'U.S. Blues') and a previously unreleased live performance from the University of Nevada-Reno on 5/12/74. Recorded at San Francisco's Coast Recorders studio, the album features Keith Godchaux's keyboard brilliance. Robert Hunter's lyrics, filled with imagery and sardonic wit, shine on tracks like 'U.S. Blues.' Jerry Garcia's lead guitar and guest contributions, including Ned Lagin's synth effects and John McFee's pedal steel, adding depth. Peaking at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 chart, From the Mars Hotel remains a landmark in the Grateful Dead's discography, meriting this celebratory release.

Review: The Grateful Dead's From The Mars Hotel gets a grand remaster for its 50th Anniversary, enriched with rare demos and a live performance from 1974. This deluxe edition, meticulously curated by the band's legacy manager David Lemieux and remastered by David Glasser, enhances the album's historic sound with modern clarity. The release showcases the Dead's explorative phase, featuring standout tracks such as 'Scarlet Begonias' and 'Ship Of Fools.' Highlights include a live performance capturing the band's synergy and the iconic Wall of Sound, a revolutionary audio system that defined their live shows. This edition not only revisits the band's studio talents but also celebrates their live energy, immortalising the Grateful Dead's enduring influence on rock music.

Review: Florence's Sleeve Records yoink the crown for most obscure reissue, as of late. In their words, "the image on the cover of this record as far as anybody can reasonably tell is probably the only photograph of The Hygrades in existence." Clearly, the promo move for this record is to play up the much-trammeled obscurity/mystery angle, but perhaps the real question should be 'why or how did The Hygrades find themselves in such a historical position to become the object of retroactive sleuthing in the first place?' The answer is: they had an early-career boost as recording artists for HMV/EMI and then seemed to drop off the commercial music map. So, if you're into mysteries, this one might be (and end up in) your bag. But, please, once the mystery is solved, don't also forget to stop and imbibe the glorious Afro-funk and Afrobeats jaunts heard inside, all testifying the potent hotpot of sounds - funk, blues, and soul - that both went into and made pungent the Western African shores of the 70s.
