  1. Barry Biggs - "Work All Day" (3:26)
  2. The Dynamites - "Play All Night" (3:29)
  3. Clarence Wears - "Working Mood" (2:50)
  4. The Dynamites - "Got To Work" (3:05)
Review: Only Roots come through with a classic wedge from Barry Biggs. These pure vibes first came in 1976 and on this package you're also treated to the Clarence Wears guitar piece from the same year, plus a couple of spicy dubs. "Work All Day" is a golden offering with an aloof and soulful vocal that drifts up top like a wispy cloud on a summer's day. Muted chords enrich things and the natty riffs keep things subtly funky. That original Wears guitar piece is a real heart wrencher - the guitar rings out into the sky with oodles of reverb giving it even more poignancy.

  1. Dennis Brown & Impact All Stars - "Cheater" (3:00)
  2. Tommy McCook & Impact All Stars - "Harvest In The East" (3:23)
Review: The latest deep dive into the archives of Vincent "Randy" Chinn's legendary Impact label has unearthed two gems, both of which were initially featured on a now impossible-to-find, U.S-only ten-inch single. On side A you'll find the incredible 'Cheater', where Dennis Brown's weary but honeyed vocals hauntingly rise above a chunky, bass-heavy reggae riddim laid down by Chinn's impeccable Impact Allstars house band. The same riddim is reprised on flipside 'Harvest in the East', where Brown's mesmerising vocals are replaced by seriously good saxophone solos from the irrepressible Tommy McCook and brass band style horn arrangements.

I Love The Way You Love
  1. The Chosen Few - "I Love The Way You Love" (3:46)
  2. The Groove Master - "I Love The Way You Love" (3:52)
Review: For their latest missive, Rock A Shaka have decided to offer up a new pressing of The Chosen Few's early '70s classic "I Love The Way You Love", a slab of languid, soulful sunshine recorded at a time when reggae as we know it today (rather than rocksteady or ska) was still a nascent musical form. While the original vocal version has featured on a number of the Jamaican band's albums over the years, the accompanying flipside "Version" by producer Prince Tony Robinson AKA The Groove Master has previously been frustratingly hard to find. It's worth picking this up just to get it, as Robinson's additional musical flourishes - think Tommy McCook style sax, fluttering flute solos and harder rhythm guitar - lift the band's fine riddim to even higher heights.

Funny Feeling
Cat: OHM 7009. Rel: 07 Sep 20
  1. The Conscious Minds - "Something New" (2:47)
  2. The Gaylads - "Funny Feeling" (2:45)
Review: The latest 45 on the revitalised Soul Beat label, which was first active in the 1970s, offers up some serious buried treasure from producer, musician and vocalist B.B Seaton. Both tracks originally featured on an ultra-rare, white label 45 that slipped out in Jamaica way back in 1969. The A-side, 'Funny Feeling', features Seaton's celebrated trio, the Gaylads, offering fantastic group harmonies and exquisite delivery of Seaton's loved-up lyrics over a chunky rocksteady riddim. Over on the flip you'll find a fine instrumental from the Conscious Minds ('Something New'), which Seaton later reworked to become the basis of Ernest Wilson's 'I Know Myself'.

Such Is Life
Cat: OR 125. Rel: 17 Dec 20
  1. Such Is Life (2:34)
  2. Come Down 68 (2:17)
Review: Lately we've been treated to a number of essential reissues of cuts from the sizable back catalogue of Randy's, a label helmed by producers Vincent and Clive Chinn. Here's another, featuring the surprise combination of calypso/soca great Lord Creator and one of Ska and Rocksteady's greatest instrumental groups, Tommy McCook and the Supersonics. First issued in 1968, 'Such is Life' is a super-sweet slab of reggae/rocksteady fusion in which Lord Creator's smooth, soulful vocals work in perfect harmony with McCook's ear-catching saxophone motifs and the Supersonics' warm, heady riddim. Over on the flip you'll find original B-side 'Come Down '68', a jauntier number featuring subtle hints towards both ska and rhythm & blues amongst its cheery rocksteady grooves.

Easing (12")
Cat: SNDW 12037. Rel: 21 Jun 19
  1. Easing (8:04)
  2. Easing (version) (6:49)
Review: George and Glen Miller are undoubtedly best known for their West End Records released 1982 boogie-soul classic "Touch Your Life". They released plenty of other records that flitted between soca, reggae, disco, and - in the latter stages of their career - electrofunk. "Easing", which appeared at some point at the turn of the '80s on London label Third World, remains one of their most potent releases - and, in its original form at least, formidably hard to find. This Soundway reissue wisely replicates the track list of the original release, beginning with the title track - a deliciously percussive, musically intricate chunk of peak-time disco smothered in sharp, Afro-funk style horns and George and Glen Miller's lilting reggae-soul style vocals. The flipside "Version" strips out the vocals, allowing listeners to hear in greater detail the pair's impeccable arrangements and instrumentations (particularly the fine orchestration and rich groove).

The Champ
The Champ (7")
Cat: PS 376. Rel: 14 Jan 21
  1. The Mohawks - "The Champ" (Reggae version) (3:13)
  2. The Marvels - "Rock Steady" (3:06)
Review: If you dig hip-hop, funk or soul, you should know 'The Champ', a much-sampled, Hammond-heavy 1968 rhythm & blues workout from Alan Hawkshaw's Mohawks outfit. However, you may not know this version: a 1973 reggae remake from the band that brilliantly slows down the main organ motif and places it atop a sturdy, bass-heavy rhythm. This time round, it comes backed with another killer reggae rework: a skanking take on Aretha Franklin soul classic 'Rock Steady' from the Marvels. Recorded and released in the UK by a group of exiled Jamaicans in the early 1970s, it remains an inspired example of reggae's 'versioning' culture.

Riding High
  1. The Paragons & Jah Stone & Tommy McCook & The Supersonics - "Riding High" (5:37)
  2. The Paragons - "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" (4:52)
Review: High Note/Onlyroots head back to 1978 for when The Paragons, a Jamaican vocal group mostly known for rocksteady tracks, linked with Jah Stone and Tommy McCook And The Supersonics for two scorching reggae tunes. On the a-side is 'Riding High' a nice earthy and authentic roller with a pained lead and lush backing singing that gets you in a vibe. Flip it over and 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' is a subtly tweaked version that gives more weight to the vocals. Both are well worth copping.

Fooling Around
  1. The Rio Grandes - "Fooling Around" (2:56)
  2. The Duke Reid Group - "Oh Misery" (2:22)
Review: As reggae aficionados will tell you, Dutchess was one of Treasure Isle founder Arthur 'Duke' Reid's smaller labels. These days, the reborn print is being used to reissue sought-after rarities and previously unheard tracks from Reid's vast Treasure Isle vaults. These two tracks come under the former category and were previously only available as part of Trojan's Treasure Isle Ska Rarities box set. The A-side boasts The Rio Grandes' boisterous and harmonic 'Foolin' Around' - a defiantly fuzzy, early '60s Reid production that for some reason never came out at the time - while on the flip you'll find 'Oh Misery' by the producer's early all-star backing band, the Duke Reid Group; this, too, is a vital piece of previously buried ska gold.

Cat: T 040. Rel: 17 Dec 19
  1. Funny (3:06)
  2. I Am Yours Forever (2:55)
Review: The Treasure Isle reissue series continues via a fresh pressing of the Soul Lads superb 1968 45, "Funny". It sees the slick, soulful harmony group accompanied by the Supersonics, one of Skatalites man Tommy McCook's alternative groups. The title track is warm, woozy and sweet, with the group adding brilliant vocals to a languid rocksteady backing track rich in mazy organ solos and warm bass. Flipside "I Am Yours Forever" is a little fuzzier but no less sweet, with hazy horn lines catching the ear just as much as the head-nodding, bass-heavy groove and the group's fantastic doo-wop style vocals.

Review: When Inhmost made their debut on Greta Cottage Woodpile in 2015, we remarked on the quality of their picture-perfect tributes to the cosmic, soul-warming sound of 1990s ambient labels such as Fax and Apollo. "Everything Is New", their belated second album, takes a similar widescreen, retro-futurist approach, with the publicity-shy duo delivering impeccably crafted, exceedingly atmospheric workouts that variously doff a cap to Global Communication ('Aurulia'), Pete Namlook (the quiet and contemplative 'Break Down'), Space Time Continuum ('Deeper Thoughts'), the Irresistible Force ('Sleep Walk'), Ninja Tune's almost forgotten N Tone label ('Spectrum'), and the more ambient end of Richard H Kirk's Sandoz project (the warm and wonderful 'Sometime For Time').

Review: Indica Dubs and Music Mania link up once more for their 18th release, which comes from two of the UK dub top legends and pioneers in Alpha & Omega and The Disciples. This album was first put out in 1998, but only in CD format. Now two deuces later it makes its first ever appearance on vinyl and is as crucial as ever, with its crisp and fresh, steel plated dub sounds and warrior leads. The iconic 'Roaring Lion' is a well known anthem in the dub scene, loved and admired by all, so gets a welcome inclusion and is sure to once again be heard everywhere as soon as we can enjoy some real life sound system action .

Review: Music Mania and Indica Dubs come together for a big15th release that takes the form of this excellent "Dubs From The Zion Valley" full length. Despite the sleek future sounds on offer, it was first put out in 1994 and includes some well known classics such as "4 Min Dub" by Isrealies and "Meditation Rock". Both have been big cuts for the Aba Shanti-I Sound System for decades now but still sound super hot to this day. Our pick: Bush Chemists' "Rimshots Get Clap" is a hand out with its endless echo, reverb and woodpecker like hits all built on a natty bassline.

Review: The latest must-have double feature from the Doctor Bird archives focuses on the pioneering work of Jamaican producer and vocalist Clancy Eccles, one of the first wave of young rocksteady artists to achieve international success in the late 1960s. The first disc focuses on his work as a self-produced solo artist, backing the fantastic 1969 LP "Freedom" - a soulful, slow-burn treat - with a handful of B-sides and lesser-known singles recorded in the same period. Disc two offers up the instrumental album he produced for regular backing band The Dynamites, "Fire Corner", plus a wealth of tracks Clancy produced for toaster King Stitt and other leading Jamaican vocalists of the period, most of which have never been available before on CD.

Review: It would be fair to say that Lee 'Scratch' Perry's work with The Full Experience, a female vocal trio comprised of Aura Lewis, Pamela Reed and Candy MacKenzie, is not among his best known material - in part because only limited amounts of it was ever released in the late 1970s. This brilliant anthology from Doctor Bird does its best to fill in the gaps by gathering together Full Experience tracks from various largely little-known releases, including a clutch of cuts that have never before appeared on wax. Highlights include the dancefloor-focused disco-reggae sweetness of "Disco Fits", the super-soulful "Ice Cream", the Congoes-esque "Young Gifted & Broke" and the brilliant 12" mix of "Disco Devil", which is based on Perry's fine riddim for Max Romeo's "Chase The Devil".
