Too Hot
Too Hot (translucent yellow vinyl 7" limited to 250 copies reeditado) (1 per customer)
Cat: PHI 14 YELLOW. Rel: 10 May 21
  1. Too Hot (4:12)
  2. Too Hot (version) (4:12)
Review: Swiss Balearic overlord Lexx returns with his first single of 2019. As with many of his recent releases, "Too Hot" is a collaborative affair, with Permanent Vacation regular (and longtime friend) Simon 'Woolfy' James swinging by the studio to lend a hand. James delivers a hazy and glassy-eyed vocal perfectly suited to the duo's chugging, Balearic style synth-pop/dub reggae backing track. In authentic reggae fashion, the flipside features a more spaced-out instrumental "Version" rich in whistling lead lines, delay-laden space synths, warm dub bass and tropical guitar flourishes. As much as we like the vocal mix, it's the flipside take that really sets our pulses racing.

Date With The Rain
  1. Date With The Rain (8:03)
  2. Dub With The Rain (7:54)
Review: Nick "Linkwood" Moore and Euan Fryer established East Coast Love Affair with the idea of making it the "Athens of the North house band". They've recently released a slew of singles, of which this sparkling, soulful cover version of Eddie Kendricks' favourite 'Date With The Rain', featuring the silky voice of lover's rock legend Peter Hunningale, is arguably the most revelatory. Rich in leisurely but ear-catching drum machine patters, warming bass and spakrling synth sounds, the duo's full vocal cover version sits somewhere between lover's rock, street soul and mid-80s electrofunk. Fittingly, it comes backed with 'Dub With The Rain', a delay-laden instrumental take that subtly showcases the depth and beauty of the pair's backing track while also adding a little extra low-end grunt. Simply sublime.

  15. Sound Dimension - "Congo Rock" (3:54)
  16. Zoot Simms - "African Challenge" (3:14)
Review: Soul Jazz Records' Studio One releases are legendary, and for good reason. This 20th Anniversary edition is of one of the most classic of them all, so it rightfully gets a special one-off blue double vinyl pressing. This one set the standard and is jam packed with classics from the almighty reggae roster of master producer Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd. The likes of Freddie McGregor, Willie Williams, Cornell Campbell, Alton Ellis and Devon Russell all feature and contribute to a fine mix of seminal cuts and more rare gems that touch on surreal afro-centric dreams as well as Rasta anthems.

Reggae Music (reissue)
Cat: KALITA 12016. Rel: 23 Apr 21
  1. Reggae Music (4:53)
  2. Reggae Music (instrumental) (5:55)
Review: This 12" on Kalita marks first ever official reissue of the highly sought after Michael Paul reggae-soul-disco gem 'Reggae Music.' It is something of a megabit that never was after first coming on the New York-based Revolver Records. Since then it has been hard to find, and even if you do find a copy, many are said to have some real sound quality issues. Either way it is now a bit of a grail for a certain sort of DJ so to have it here, remastered and nice and loud, is big news. As well as the languid and steamy original, there is a killer dub version on the flip.

Smells Like Teen Spirit (reissue)
Smells Like Teen Spirit (reissue) (7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: PARK 1033. Rel: 17 Dec 20
  1. Smells Like Teen Spirit (3:16)
  2. Summer Madness (4:01)
Review: Sometimes known as Inokasira Rangers, Park Rangers are a Japanese band who have spent much of the last decade releasing inspired but unlikely instrumental reggae covers of massive rock, pop and disco hits. This 7" single boasts two of their most popular covers, starting with a ridiculously cheery and almost hilariously cheeky version of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Built around a 1960s style rocksteady riddim, it's instantly recognisable thanks to the band's choice to track the tune of Cobain's lead vocal (which naturally isn't present) with a Hammond organ solo. On the flip you'll find a deep reggae-disco cover of Kool & The Gang classic 'Summer Madness'; it's good, but nowhere near as fine as the surprising A-side.

Never Too Much
Never Too Much (7" reeditado)
Cat: ATH 091. Rel: 14 Apr 21
  1. Never Too Much (4:25)
  2. Never Too Much (instrumental) (4:18)
Review: Athens Of The North is unveiling a whole wealth of new 7"s this month and as usual, each and every one is an essential purchase. This one in particular will resonate with a wide audience thanks to the ubiquity of the source material - Luther Vandross's 'Never Too Much.' There have been many versions over the years but this reggae take from Derrick Cross is special indeed, and an OG will costs basically too much for any sane person. Now a fully legit repress makes it accessible to all once more, and hurrah for that.

  14. On My Radio (3:15)
  15. Too Much Pressure (2:52)
Review: First released in 1980, the Selector's debut album Too Much Pressure did much to define the revivalist, punk-era ska sound of Two-Tone Records. Listening back 41 years on from its initial release, the album remains a hugely vibrant and exciting set. Its' genius lies not only in its then surprising repurposing of the Jamaican sound of Ska, but also in its punky attitude, subtle use of dub-style effects and relentlessly high energy levels. The album, which is here presented in audiophile-friendly remastered audio with a bonus seven-inch single, is packed full of classics, with our highlights including 'On My Radio', 'Black and Blue', the righteous title track and a dub-wise, party-starting cover of Monty Norman's iconic James Bond theme.

The Champ
The Champ (7")
Cat: PS 376. Rel: 16 Feb 21
  1. The Mohawks - "The Champ" (Reggae version) (3:13)
  2. The Marvels - "Rock Steady" (3:06)
Review: If you dig hip-hop, funk or soul, you should know 'The Champ', a much-sampled, Hammond-heavy 1968 rhythm & blues workout from Alan Hawkshaw's Mohawks outfit. However, you may not know this version: a 1973 reggae remake from the band that brilliantly slows down the main organ motif and places it atop a sturdy, bass-heavy rhythm. This time round, it comes backed with another killer reggae rework: a skanking take on Aretha Franklin soul classic 'Rock Steady' from the Marvels. Recorded and released in the UK by a group of exiled Jamaicans in the early 1970s, it remains an inspired example of reggae's 'versioning' culture.

Review: It's been 40 years since The Specials changed the ska game with their self titled debut, so what better time to remaster and re-cut it at half speed at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Spread out over 2 x 12" vinyl it was originally produced by Elvis Costello and was a loud and proud blend of big and energetic tracks, no-messing lyrics and hard hitting grooves. It includes a few covers along the way, such as their fabulous take on Dandy Livingstone's "A Message to You, Rudy" and red-hot version of the Maytals' "Monkey Man". A strong anti-racism message on "Doesn't Make It Alright" sits next to the tongue in cheek takedown of local pubs on "Nite Club" and much more.

  1. Double Talk (4:30)

Review: Emotional Rescue continue to explore the archives of the Dancefloor label, and also extend their appreciation for the golden age of lovers rock. This time their attention is on Red Cloud, a UK reggae act who were active through the 80s. 'Double Talk' was a hit when it was released, but its limited pressing means it's been prohibitively expensive for far too long, so this reissue should be very well received indeed. As well as the smooth as silk original version, there's a cool and deadly 'Double Dub' version to sink your ears into as well. Stretching things out in his inimitable style, DJ Duckcomb gets busy on the B-side with nearly eight minutes' worth of 'Discomix' to keep that quintessential lovers groove rolling for as long as possible.

Review: Soul Jazz Records continues to trawl through the vast archives of Jamaica's Studio One label and its many offshoots. This time round, they're focusing on uplifting, feel-good rocksteady and soulful reggae cuts from the late 1960s and early '70s. As you'd expect, it's an excellent collection that not only showcases classic cuts and well-worn "riddims", but also obscurities and the sort of rare gems that make reggae collectors go weak at the knees. With such stars as Alton Ellis, John Holt, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Heptones and Jackie Mittoo all featured, and exhaustive sleeve notes from reggae scholar Rob Chapman, Rocksteady Got Soul is another essential Studio One compilation from the reliable Soul Jazz Records crew.

Review: On his previous releases as Booker Gee, Guillaume Metenier has employed his immaculate organ-playing skills over a range of killer funk and soul grooves. Here he flips the script, delivering atmospheric, fluid Hammond solos over some dub-wise reggae grooves played and produced by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Lone Ark (real name Roberto Sanchez). Both Metenier and Sanchez are in fine form on opener 'Auxmites', a bass-heavy head-nodder that sounds like Lee 'Scratch' Perry producing Jimmy Smith. 'Faith' is a little sunnier and warmer, with Metenier's solos working in perfect unison with Sanchez's glistening guitars, jangling pianos and skanking rhythm. Both cuts come accompanied by pleasingly spaced-out Dub revisions courtesy of Sanchez. Top stuff!

Review: This special 40th anniversary edition of More Specials has been mastered and cut at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios using the original production tapes. It also includes a 7" bonus that first came with the original album in 1980. Of course, the band remains a defining act of the 70s and 80s for all their work on Two Tone Records. Mixing the edgy of punk, the rolling rhythm of rocksteady and their own Special magic, they launched a whole ska revival and remain as popular today as ever.

Pressure Drop (coloured vinyl 7")
Cat: CLO 2154. Rel: 10 Feb 21
  1. Pressure Drop (3:44)
  2. 54-46 Was My Number (3:50)
Review: The late great Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert may have left us but his musical legacy lives on, and likely will do forever especially as the reissues keep on coming. This tidy 7" on Pressure Drop is another goldie with 1968 rocksteady classic 'Pressure Drop', which the artist once said was "a song about karmic justice, a song about revenge, but in the form of karma." Flip it over and you'll find '54-46 Was My Number', a well known jam with a lovely mid tempo rumble and acoustic guitar riffs riding along nicely.

Redmo Reworks
Cat: FTR 001. Rel: 05 Sep 14
  1. Bob Marley - "Is This Love" (Redmo acoustic takedown)
  2. Redmo - "Sadi Soul"
Review: Sam Redmore has quietly been doing his thing in hometown Birmingham for some time, crafting soul-soaked re-edits, bootleg remixes and mash-ups that tend towards the tasteful end of the spectrum. Having previously built up a solid fan base via his own Bandcamp page, he's finally made it onto wax. The two cuts featured here are amongst his best. The A-side revision of Bob Marley's "Is This Love" is particularly potent. It strips out the drums, thus emphasizing the genuine sweetness of Marley's original. Flip for "Sadi Soul", an upbeat, headnodding rework of a vibraphone and double bass-laced jazz-funk jam with added hip-hop swing.

Review: This Record Store Day, Two Tone have put together a specially half-speed mastered version of this classic ska compendium. It is part of the ongoing 40th anniversary celebrations for Two Tone Records and is a soundtrack to the movie of the same name. It has never been repressed since 1981, making this an even bigger deal, and it contains standout live versions of plenty of essential tunes from greats like The Specials, Madness, The Selecter, The Beat, Bad Manners and The Bodysnatchers. Review: Music On Vinyl continues to serve up audiophile-friendly editions of classic reggae albums. Their latest offering is a translucent green vinyl version of sometime Wailers member Peter Tosh's 1983 full length Mama Africa. It remains one of Tosh's most complete sets, recorded and produced in cahoots with an all-star cast of musical collaborators including Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, vocal group the Tamlins and soul legend Betty Wright. As you'd expect given the money that was spent on its' recording, it sees Tosh and company add big studio polish and 1980s rock and pop tropes to the singer's usual roots reggae riddims. While there are some curious moments - most notably reggae take on Chuck Berry's rock and roll classic 'Johnny B Goode' - for the most part it's a highly entertaining affair.

Review: Jamaican ska vocalist Justin Hines was one of the many popular jewels on Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label. He often worked with the Dominoes backing singers and their first album, reissued here by Music On Vinyl, was reportedly a firm favourite of Bob Marley. Pure roots at its finest and straight from the mid-seventies, this is feel good music that brims with warmth and earthy vibes. It's a celebration of dreadlock culture, the beauty of the Jamaican motherland and a fine reflection of the horizontal pace of life out in the Caribbean.

He hailed from Trenchtown in Jamaica and grew up singing, learning guitar and bass, redoing under the tutelage of Bob Marley early on. Here his soul drenched reggae is offered dup with 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling', a unique track with horns and big bass but also a subtle disco energy. Next to a dub take, Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb serves up a mix that embellishes on the disco elements.

Review: Back in 2002, Soul Jazz released Hustle, a superb "reggae disco" primer containing killer reggae covers of classic disco hits, mostly recorded and released in the late 1970s. Given that Caribbean disco sounds are now all the range, they've decided to reissue the in-demand collection. Naturally, it contains some stellar material, from Xanadu and Sweet Lady's feminine cover of "Rapper's Delight" and One Bloody's wonderfully positive and laidback cover of William de Vaughan's "Be Thankful For What You've Got", to the dancefloor dynamite that is Risco Connection's brilliant cover of McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stopping Us Now". Throw in Black Harmony's sublime version of Jean Carn's "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" and you have an essential collection.

Review: The latest Studio One release to be released on Soul Jazz Records features a stellar line-up of Jamaica's finest ever musicians. The legendary Skatalites, alongside the later Studio One in-house bands the Soul Vendors, Sound Dimension, Soul Defenders and Brentford All Stars, were as much a part of the classic Studio One sound as were the singers that they accompanied, such as Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, Marcia Griffiths and Bob Marley And The Wailers. This album features many of the musicians involved with Studio One who literally defined Reggae music. From the Skatalites members Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso and Jackie Mittoo to killer sidemen such as trombonist Vin Gordon (aka Don Drummond Jnr), saxophonist Cedric 'Im' Brooks, keyboardist and Twelve Tribes Of Israel member Pablove Black. Many of the rhythms that these musicians created became the backbone of the Jamaican musical world and their songs have been replayed and re-versioned by 1000s of Reggae producers ever since. The album features classic and super-rare tracks all recorded under Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd's supervision at the legendary recording studio and record label. As well as seventeen killer tracks, the album comes with new sleeve notes and photography by Dennis Morris and Adrian Boot, making this another essential Studio One Reggae release for connoisseurs of Reggae and newcomers alike.

Here they've teamed up with homegrown talent Sofia Manri to cover the 1979 city-pop (a subgenre of J-Pop) classic called '(Mayonaka no Door) - Stay With Me' by a singer named Miki Matsubara - which has re-emerged as a hit in recent years. On the flip, we've got a cover of 'Silly Love Songs' by the Paul McCartney fronted outfit Wings from 1976. Both renditions are in the ska infused classic rock style that you have come to know and love from this outfit.
