Walking After Midnight
Walking After Midnight (transparent blue vinyl 7")
Cat: SBESTS 296. Rel: 20 May 22
  1. Walking After Midnight (3:06)
  2. Midnight Skank (3:07)
Review: Rhoda Dakar is back on Sunday Best Recordings following a great cover single back in January that saw her add her own spin to 'The Man Who Sold The World.' This time out she offers up 'Walking After Midnight' which was originally recorded by Patsy Cline and written by Alan Block and Donn Hecht. It is a real country classic that now gets a first ever (possibly) ska cover. The horns swing low, the vocals soar up top and the whole track takes on a totally different and upbeat feel.
On the flip is the rugged 'Midnight Skank.'

  1. Uptight Boss (3:06)
  2. Beg For A Dollar (3:26)
Review: Breakbeat Paradise has got another one of its fun and functional new 7"s ready for your delectation here. It has a great backstory, too, that involves Berry Gordy taking some of his Motown stars on holiday to Jamaica in 1969. Some of them recorded with local musicians in the upcoming reggae scene but the sessions were though lost, until now. Well, it sounds like that could be true, but it isn't - in fact they are the work of Mako & Mr Bristow and are two crowd pleasing tunes with reggae, soul and funk deep in their bones. 'Uptight Boss' in particular is a timeless classic.

Special Love
Special Love (limited 7")
Cat: BBR 043. Rel: 16 May 22
  1. Jah Milla - "Special Love" (3:22)
  2. DJ Move - "Special Love" (version) (3:19)
Review: vBlack Buffalo's beefy reggae offerings are irresistibly tasty and this new Special Love 7" is a limited offering from the upcoming DJ Moves album. For special love he links up with 'Jah'Mila' which mixes classic rhythms with some crisp drums and steely digital dub aesthetics. The vocal brings a fresh approach as it twists and turns in emotive fashion. DJ Move goes solo for the flip side instrumental and works the mixing board hard, with spaced out effects and plenty of headiness. It's a great taster for the album ahead.

Cat: SJR 47712. Rel: 15 Apr 22
  1. Dawn Penn - "No, No, No" (4:26)
  2. Dub Specialist - "No, No, No" (Creator version) (3:09)
Review: Soma sub-label Avoidant Records recently put out a fantastic collection fo electro cuts but it was a digital only release. Now some of the standouts from it get pulled together on this fresh new 12"that joins the dots between Europe and Detroit. DJ Godfather kicks off with some rapid fire 313 electro, squirrelling bass and slick claps then 'One Direct Line' from The Exaltics is more cosmic and blissed out with lush ambient synths. On the flip, Flug goes hard with mad digital patterns and Blaktony layers up jacking drums, corrugated bass and dark hits. Great stuff.

Review: The iconic Late Night Tales series scored a real doozy when they managed to lock in Don Letts for for his instalment. The British film director, DJ and musician is a vital part of the UK's musical fabric from his days making videos for The Clash and Elvis Costello to his work with the Big Audio Dynamite band he co-founded. All that history is distilled into this sublime selection of sounds across four vital sounds fo wax. There's reggae, dub, ska, a cover of Joy Division, head twisting goodness from Gentleman's Dub Club and plenty of exclusives. It's an essential listen, basically.

  1. Tears (4:17)
  2. Just Be Good To Me (feat Andrea Brown) (3:37)
Review: Sam Redmore's 'Tears' 7" is in keeping with his usual eclectic style. He effortlessly brings many different vibes to this pair of covers which are reworked in a cumbia style. First up is Giorgio Moroder's 'Tears' which in his hands comes something likely to win over a whole new generation of fans. An equally standout original is on the b-side, namely a Latin flavoured version of SOS Band's electro boogie classic 'Just Be Good To Me'. It will sashay and swing its way into your affections with its big horns and makes this a vital pick up.

Review: Jim Murple Memorial is a multi-generational and multi-talented group of seven French musicians who formed in 1996. They have been mixing up r&b and original ska sounds ever since and have put out various albums and single sin scent decades. They are now back with a new offering than finds them serving up the tracks 'Covida' - here sung in Spanish - and also 'Comes Love' on the flip. They are both pressed up to this tidy 7" on limited vinyl by the Liquidator Music label. A crucial pick up for those who like their rhythms fat and their drums heavy.

But this is a record set for that celebration of all things waxy and it is a limited 10" with tracks by Edi Fitzroy and DATC Dubcrew which were all produced by Mikey Dread. It comes on hand numbered copies on solid red, solid green and solid gold coloured vinyl. 'The Gun' kicks off with withering synth work and fat rolling rhythms before 'Invasion' sinks into a much slower, deeper dub. Flipside versions offer more rib rattling bass and pillowy drum

  1. Judge Dread & The Originals - "Skinhead Moonstomp" (4:11)
  2. Judge Dread - "Phoenix City" (2:55)
Review: Judge Dread remains one of the few great transplants of 70s reggae culture to achieve a certain legitimacy despite being a white, British artist. Buoyed by skinhead culture's adoption of reggae as their soundtrack of choice, he was one of the first white musicians to score a reggae chart hit in Jamaica. This handy little 7" on Harlem Shuffle brings two of his classics back into circulation for a new generation to skank the night away to. Just drop the Thunderbirds-sampling intro to 'Skinhead Moonstomp' and watch the dancefloor spring to life in a blizzard of shuffling and jerking limbs.

Joy In My Soul
  1. The Paragons - "Joy In My Soul" (feat Tommy McCook & The Supersonics) (2:24)
  2. Tommy McCook & The Supersonics - "The World Needs Love" (instrumental) (2:11)
Review: This fabulous "45" features two more gems from the seemingly bottomless archives of Arthur 'Duke' Reid's legendary Treasure Isle studio and record label. First up on side A is "Joy In My Soul" by the Paragons, a vocal group best known for their rocksteady-era output. This particular number is a sweet slab of reggae soulfulness that was first released in 1975, though the Reid-produced cut sounds like it may have been recorded earlier. Turn to side B for Treasure Isle Tommy McCook and the Supersonics' "What The World Needs", an instrumental rocksteady cover of the Hal David/Burt Bacharach easy listening classic later made famous by Dione Warwick (and later fellow Motown stars the Supremes).

Cat: ART 001. Rel: 07 Dec 20
  1. Barbara Don't Love Me (4:01)
  2. Dat Ting (4:20)
Review: He's hardly prolific, but DJ/producer Del Gazeebo has been offering up occasional re-edits, mash-ups and bootleg reworks for longer than some of us have been alive. Here he begins 2020 in fine fashion with two party-hearty reworks guaranteed to get the dancefloor moving. Aside "Barbara Don't Love Me" is a bouncy, subtly beefed-up take on a horn-heavy 1960s soul/rhythm and blues classic that sounds like it would go down well at parties that love Northern Soul. Flipside "Dat Ting" meanwhile is a head-nodding take on a punchy soulful reggae cut underpinned by weighty bass and tight hip-hop beats.

Date With The Rain
  1. Date With The Rain (8:03)
  2. Dub With The Rain (7:54)
Review: Nick "Linkwood" Moore and Euan Fryer established East Coast Love Affair with the idea of making it the "Athens of the North house band". They've recently released a slew of singles, of which this sparkling, soulful cover version of Eddie Kendricks' favourite 'Date With The Rain', featuring the silky voice of lover's rock legend Peter Hunningale, is arguably the most revelatory. Rich in leisurely but ear-catching drum machine patters, warming bass and spakrling synth sounds, the duo's full vocal cover version sits somewhere between lover's rock, street soul and mid-80s electrofunk. Fittingly, it comes backed with 'Dub With The Rain', a delay-laden instrumental take that subtly showcases the depth and beauty of the pair's backing track while also adding a little extra low-end grunt. Simply sublime.

Review: Edinburgh's Athens Of The North label is endlessly flawless and this time around they pull together the special lovers rock covers they put out at the end of last year onto a superbly strong 12 track compilation. It arrives just in time for the warmer months and has been curated by Sam Don and overseen by label boss Euan Fryer. Standouts include Christine Lewin's lush take on the heavily sampled "Juicy Fruit" while the lo-fi bliss of Al Charles's "Outstanding" is another one to swell the heart and sooth the soul. For more sentimental moments check Family Love's "Do Me Baby." Overall, though, this is a must buy.

He hailed from Trenchtown in Jamaica and grew up singing, learning guitar and bass, redoing under the tutelage of Bob Marley early on. Here his soul drenched reggae is offered dup with 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling', a unique track with horns and big bass but also a subtle disco energy. Next to a dub take, Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb serves up a mix that embellishes on the disco elements.

Review: On the latest volume in the Late Night Tales series, Don Letts has dug deep into his crates to present a selection of some of his favourite dubbed-out reggae cover versions, alongside dub style remixes of more contemporary covers. It's a simple concept, brilliantly executed, with Letts offering up some exclusive, dubplate style remixes amongst the classic cuts and recent gems. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, the full vocal dub of Capitol 1212's take on Joy Dvision's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', Mad Professor's insanely weighty 2021 dub of John Holt classic 'You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine', Blackbox Recorder's oddball reggae-soul version of 'Uptown Top Rankin' and Easy Stars All Stars' deliciously mystical interpretation of The Beatles' 'Within You Without You'.

Review: For their latest classic reggae reissue, Greensleeves have gathered together two vintage albums in one tasty package. The first half of the CD focuses on Sylford Walker's Lamb's Bread, a dub era roots reggae set recorded at King Tubby's Studio. Tubby's infamous mixing skills come to the fore, with Walker singing over some of the producer's most on-point backing tracks. On the second half of the disc, you'll find Welton Irie's Ghettoman Corner, which features the mic man toasting in thick patois over many of the same riddims as used on Walker's set. It too was recorded at King Tubby's. Interestingly, the great man didn't mix this one, despite its heavy dub vibe.

Review: Hardly a week seems to go by without the arrival of another essential collection of sounds form Acid Jazz. This one presents a superb album by Nick Manasseh and David Hill's Soul Revivers which was an always ambitious and passionate coming together between the two. It features musicians form across the ages such as modern jazz trumpeter MS. MAURICE (who famously works with Kokoroko And Nubya Garcia), and vocalist Alexia Coley. The record takes us on a trip thorough the moodier end of the reggae spectrum with progressive sounds and innovative new ideas in each cut.

Reggae Dynamite Vol 2

  2. The Regulators - "Caymanas Park Rocket" (2:30)
  3. Melbourne Douglas - "Rude Boy Don't Fight" (2:50)
  4. King Deadly - "Joshua A Mek Riddim Run" (2:46)
Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Elsewhere, label regulars (sorry) the Regulators deliver a high-tempo, Hammond-heavy instrumental workout (the excellent 'Caymanas Park Rocket'), while King Deadly layers languid organ solos over a more dub-wise groove on EP standout 'Joshua a Mek Riddim Run'.

  1. The Umoza Music Project - "Down By The Beach" (3:05)
  2. Woodfield Rd Allstars - "Ghetto Guitar" (4:25)
Review: The crucial Original Gravity label is busy this month with three red hot new 7"s all dropping in quick succession. The top-notch funk crew has this spilt 7" from Umoza Music Project and The Woodfield Road Allstars up here on limited wax. The a-side is a sunny bit of original rousing 70s reggae direct from the islands. Backing vocalists provide plenty of butter while the lead laments a love lost and the rhythm rolls on. On the back side is a much more stoner-paced and funk drenched laidback instrumental with Balearic guitar licks that look to the stars as organ chords warm you through and the rocksteady rhythm gently sways to and fro. Two gems for sure.

Review: Kalita Records have secured the first ever official reissue of Jivaro's lovely Saturday Fever album. It is said to be one of the best ever kwaito and bubblegum pop records to have ever come from the fertile South African scene and was first released on Maurice Horwitz's Music Team label in 1989. It serves up plenty of sick prog-house grooves and post-boogie sounds, with fat synths, tiny drum machine programming and a catchy Afro vocals that energise and enthuse any DJ set. This has been sourced from the original master tapes so you can be sure it sounds fat.
