Review: Huzzah! New music from Liam Bailey, who has voiced a couple of the most gorgeous reggae, soul and dub fusion 7"s we've got in our collection in recent years. He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. On the flip, 'Mercy Tree' has hard-hitting drums and big horns that come with a powerhouse vocal that speaks of racial tensions that sadly persist throughout the world. It's a standup jam with a potent message.

Review: Dave Barker of 'Double Barrel' fame is back on the mix here for the Original Gravity label. This is the second form the many in as many months and is on the faster end of the reggae tempo scale so prepare to be swept up and skanking in no time. The lo-fi 60s reggae and early ska vibes are strong on this one as the dancing Hammond organ chords compliment Barker's effortless flow. Horn stabs and drums with infectious swagger complete the a-side 'Peace of Mind'. On the flip, The Regulators offer up a nice and laidback, deep-cut dub version with 'Jamaican beat.'

This fourth volume turns up the temperature once more, starting with Dave Barker's 'Move It On Now' with spoken word mic work over a guitar laced riddim. Woodfield Rd Allstars bring plenty of big horn energy and hints of ska to their 'San Salvario Stomp' then appear again on the flip with the organ-lead sounds of mid tempo wobbler 'Norwegian Wood'. Melbourne Douglas completes the picture with 'Wheel & Come Again', another raw as you like and classic sound.

Review: On the second volume in the GATT edits series, Swedish scalpel fiend Beatconductor once again pairs a previously unheard rework with something sought-after from his catalogue. In the latter category you'll find flipside 'Crazy in Kingston', an early noughties mash-up that adds Beyonce's superb lead vocals (and Jay-Z's on-point rap verse) from the peerless 'Crazy in Love' with a dusty old reggae riddim. It's a simple idea, beautifully executed. The brand-new (or at least previously unheard) cut this time around is 'Finger on the Trigger', a lolloping, life-affirming tweak of a 1970s dancefloor soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping heaviness of Detroit Soul and the proto-disco deliciousness of Philly Soul.

Here he lays down some classic and heartwarming reggae sounds with The 18th Parallel serving up the dub. Review: Noted reggae vocalist Barry Biggs comes under the Emotional Rescue microscope here with celebrated LA digger Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb remixing one of his cuts. First up is the original version of 'Illusion' which has big pianos over the clean digital dub. The soaring vocal is obscured by plenty of lush effects and melodies. After a version twists and contorts the original, the DJ Duckcomb Discomix slows things down and ups the dazzling disco vibes but keeps the dub dubby bottom end to ensure plenty of dance floor impact. This is a classy one as ever from this label.

Review: Top Ranking Sound rolls out more featured reggae gold from the vaults here with a new 12" that features tow originals and two versions. Black Survivors open up the account with 'Come Away Jah Jah Children' which is brilliantly unhurried. The horns are lazy and steamy, the vocals seductive, the drums seriously heavy. A dub version allows more focus on the noodling acoustic guitars, then Original Survivors step up with their own version on the flipside under the same title. This one is a little more bright and uplifting with a dub that is just as good closing out the record.

Review: Rocksteady era combo The Bleechers put out a lot of music in a short period of time, with the entirety of their bustling catalogue recorded and released between 1968 and'71. For much of that period they were associated with the Upsetter himself, the late Lee 'Scratch' Perry, and it's two of his productions for the act that are showcased on this Harlem Shuffle 7". Originally released via Upsetter Records in 1969, and tricly to find ever since, 'Come Into My Parlour' is a jaunty, organ-rich affair in which soulful vocals and heady Hammond licks rise above a classic, late-60s Upsetter groove. B-side 'Check Him Out' is equally as alluring, with an arguably stronger vocal and more prominent guitar licks replacing the pair's favoured Hammond B3.

'Ghetto Stays In The Mind' is a classic with dreamy harmonica leads and a rumbling rhythm section that brims with detail and character. The flip side is a dub that is just as great.

Review: Contemporary Hammond B3 maestro Booker Gee (real name Guillaume Metenier) has delivered some seriously good slabs over the last couple of years, and this wholehearted tribute to the JB's could well be the best of the lot. 'Popcorn' is a sparse but seriously heavy deep funk cut, with Metenier's inspired Hammond licks and solos riding a sweaty, break-fuelled groove courtesy of acclaimed modern funk multi-instrumentalist Slikk Tim. Over on the flip, the French musician and producer gives his interpretation of Sound Dimension's 'Granny Snatch', delivering a cosmic funk take full of weighty bass, flanged guitars, jazzy solos and deliciously dubbed-out sounds. It's not quite as instantly accessible as 'Popcorn', but it is certainly equally as potent.

Review: Guillaume Metenier is Booker Gee, a master edit maker and studio wizard who has made his name with some much wanted work on Lucien Entertainment as well as more than once on this label. His second release this month is a trip into the world of ska. 'Out In The Rain' is a perfect sweet spot between rolling reggae rhythms, warm organ chords and skipping kicks. The mood is sensuous and inviting as Gee blends sweet soul with playful funk. The version is only a subtle rework, resining plenty of the charm and allure of the original.

Review: Annette Brissett grew up in the USA even though she is a noted reggae vocalist. Her influences are the likes of Otis Redding and the Wailers and she also plays several instruments. 'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. The version is provided by Wackies Rhythm Force who strip the vocals and make more of the noodling prog guitars and dubby swagger.

Review: Here's a killer reissue from the Soul Jazz archives which is finally getting a repress. It's hardly surprising when the reissue becomes as sought after as the holy grail original jam from 1970, a sublime instrumental anthem of soulful, skanking perfection with Cedric Im Brooks flexing his sax in glorious style over a beautifully rough n' ready rhythm. It was shortly after this recording was laid down Brooks went on to form The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari with Count Ossie, which tells you all you need to know about the heritage we're dealing with here.

Review: Brown Sugar are pioneers of the British reggae scene, particularly within the lover's rock niche. The group's fine discography has been honed in on by the great folk at Soul Jazz who put together a superb compilation I'm In Love With A Dreadlocks back in 2018. It focused on the booth of the Lovers Rock scene in the late 70s and now the title track from it gets pressed up to its own tidy 7". Review: Pressure Sounds come through with a super 10" here with Natty Roots Controller mixed three different ways by Paolo Baldini. It is a Barry Brown original and the first remix is one with models of echo and reverb, plenty of knob twisting and heavily affected hi-hats and a rolling rhythm. Version 1 of the remix is heavier and more upright, with just as much bass weight, then the second version is lit up with some sci-fi effects. All three are delicious dubs for those who like it heady.

Review: West London label D-Roy and their sub-label Niagara are in the process of putting out a top series of seven reissues with names like Freddie McKay, Al Campbell, Gregory Isaacs and Junior Reid all making the cut. This one is a gem from Barry Brown that finds him in full-on soul mode as he draws out his languorous vocals over a classic lover's rock rhythm. Swirling horns add extra luxuriousness and on the flip, we get the Dub Plate Mix. This one has drums tumbling over themselves, endless amounts of echo and head-twisting effects for the late-night smokers.

Review: Dennis Brown serve dup a real roots classic when he penned 'Milk and Honey.' It is a dub that still does damage and so has had a nice fresh reamster for 2022. It's an enduring anthem with plenty of praise for Jah. The prodigal comes with Clive Hunt's original 'Bitter Sweet' dub which he made under his Azul moniker. It's full of echoing synths and head melting pads as well as cavernous bass depths. On the B side, Jay Glass Dubs tackles the original with a warped sense of space and time as he deconstructs contemporary dub into something all new. This is a limited-edition white label vinyl 12" so snap it up fast.

Review: Robert "Dubwise" Browne is a skilled musician who can lay down perfect basslines, lovely keyboard overdubs and excite drum programming. H does all that and more on this super laidback and heartfelt dub for the Japanese label Vortex. 'Tracks of Love' is the sound of a lazy afternoon walk in the park with a new love, without a care in the world and hearts in your eyes. The Balearic guitar solo that rings out midway through is utterly soul melting. The guitar dub makes even more of that aspect of the original.

Review: The Roots Unity label is in a real purple patch right now and has multiple 7"s dropping in quick succession. The one here is part of a slew of four drops from the Dutch label and it features esteemed roots talent, Bunnington Judah, with the in-house production team. 'Jah Children Must Rise' is organic island music with wooden, tumbling percussion and natty chords. The drums have fleshy bass and plenty of swagger next to the hypnotic flute leads. The vocals from Judah are the impassioned icing on the delicious cake. Flip it over and as always the Roots Unity crew serve up a bottomlessly deep dub version.

Review: This is a crucial 45 from Freestyle Records which separates out two tracks from their recent Bunny Scott reissue project. It is a brilliant showcase of Scott's early-Black Ark debut LP with Blaxploitation-influenced funk track 'Kinky Fly' kicking off. It has backing band members from The Chi-Lites' on board as well as a nice horn section and Chinna Smith's wah-wah guitar. The whole thing is overdubbed with synths to add to the mood. 'Sweet Loving Love' is more upbeat, with sunny towlines and rolling rhythms.

Review: Reggae collectors may already be aware of 'When You Gonna Stop', a now exceedingly hard to find UK reggae release. It was recorded by Black Slate, one of the most active British reggae bands of the period, under the alternative Jeduthum alias, produced by Robert Fearon, and initially released in 1978 on the short-lived JBC label. It remains a superb slab of conscious, warming and weighty roots reggae, with great performances from the band and an impassioned lead vocal that tends towards the world-weary. Equally as impressive is the flipside 'Stop Ranking Dub', which - as you'd expect - provides a perfect dub-wise interpretation. A genuinely essential reissue.

Review: The Mission Impossible theme is truly iconic but we never thought we'd hear it getting reworked inna reggae style. But that's exactly what we have here from Jackhaya who have enlisted four artists to add their own spin to the tense original. Jerry Johnson kicks off with a superbly laid-back, sax-laced sound full of sexual overtones. Brother Sound's 'Impossible Dub' is a digi-dub with a more muted feel and heavier low end. On the flip is a tropical and steamy rework that sticks more faithfully to the original from Benyah while Macca Dread's 'Mission Dub' is another cavernous one full of echo and reverb.

Review: Just a month after dropping their first 7" in the form of a sweet and funky version of classic hip-hop joint from the 90s, Alloy Cuts is back. The resulting sounds start with 'All Night Champion', which has raw and dusty breaks, old school stabs and funky drums topped off with a mix of early hip-hop vocals and soulful coos. Review: Originally released at a time when Kruder & Dorfmeister reigned supreme and Germany and Austria boasted some of the finest dub-fired downtempo producers around, Bozoo Bajou's debut album, Satta, was something a sleeper hit. As this 25th anniversary reissue proves, it remains a deliciously languid, laidback and glassy-eyed affair that mixes subtly jazzy instrumentation (Rhodes, jazz guitar etc), dubby bass and luscious string arrangements with slow-motion trip-hop beats and dusty samples. Review: At King Tubby's With The Roots Radics sounds a bit like the sort of text message a kid out too late might send her worried mum. It's also the name of this killer album which finds Barry Brown providing some super vocal work to killer rhythms initially laid down by the in house band Roots Radics and then twisted into psyched out stoner soundscapes by the one and only studio wizard The Scientist. He really gets deep here and EQs hard while masterfully dubbing Brown out of the picture.

Review: During last year's lockdown in Italy, contemporary dub producer Paolo Baldini was invited by Pressure Sounds to work on Bunny Lee's archive of recordings he made with singer Barry Brown during the mid-to-late 1970s. The results can now be heard on Praises, a set which adds a little more dub-wise spice to classic roots reggae cuts while retaining much of Lee's production and instrumentation. Brown's vocals - effortlessly soulful, hugely evocative and partially improvised - are simply superb, while Baldini's handling of Lee's riddims and musical arrangements is masterful. As a result, the assembled dubs, versions and vocal reworks sound faithful to the period in which they were recorded while adding subtle new touches and 21st century-ready low-end weight.

Review: Jamaican born singer Roland Burrell had a pretty vast catalogue by the later stages of his career, most of it recorded at the legendary Channel One Studio with the likes of Sly & Robbie, The Tamlins and Winston Wright. They were engineered by dons like Scientist and he went on to work with Lee 'Scratch' Perry. After he produced 'Lonely Man' he went on to some solo acclaim and recorded the hit 'Johnny Dollar' which topped several global charts. Review: The Bush Chemists rebased they know long out of print fifth studio album 'Dub Fire Blazing' in 2001. Head up by Dougie Wardrop, it is a chunky and rugged fusion of macho traditional reggae with plenty of sleek, fresh and future facing digital dub tones that still sound avant guard today. The heavy bass of these tunes will of course always connect and this ten track affair might well be the best work the crew ever put out. 'Long Time I No Smoke' is the headline making tune here that will appear to those who like the sounds of Iration Steppas.
