Review: It's always a good day when Al Kent is back with new music. This one on Gamm, Welcome To The Dub, finds him dubbing out some lush disco sounds. The title cut is a loopy and jazz-funk-infused number with lovely hi-hats and noodling chords all radiating joy and uplifting energy. 'Dubanova' then takes a more low-slung route with a sleazy guitar riff and nice live drums embellished with smartly overdubbed vocals coated in echo. 'Happiness & Peace' is a quieter affair with echoing hits and a meandering lead that encourages your mind to do the same.

Review: We're not quite sure whether this King Shark single is brand new or was recorded in the early 2000s, but either way 'Escape By Night' is well worth checking. It features the veteran dancehall and roots reggae singer delivering a typically slick and soulful vocal over a rolling digital-reggae rhythm provided by experienced UK producer Russell Bell-Brown (he of the Disciplines fame). Bell-Brown's backing track is ear-pleasing and musically breezy, with a killer bassline and piano stabs being joined by some seriously jazzy electro guitar solos. If anything, the echoing, spacious and weighty flipside 'Version' dub is even better, with Bell-Brown doing a passable impression of Scientist or Mad Professor.

Review: Donovon Kingjay's one and only album so far, Higher Meditation from 2014, is well regarded in dub circles despite being only previously available on CD. It now seems some of the leading cuts from it are making their way to wax, which will please sound system DJs across the world. This one from WhoDemSound focusses on 'Compromising Done', a fresh cut with elastic bass that bobs up and down as Kingjay muses on living in a concrete jungle. The reverse has a badman dub for more direct applications.

Review: There's a not a huge amount we know about Koberman's Probandenausweis, other than the fact it sounds very good and will appeal to fans of shamanic, slo-mo, kosmische, drug chug, ambient and experimental electronica. It's a slow building, gradually evolving and immersive trip into a studio, with arrangements valuing silence and emptiness as much as the notes and beats themselves.

Review: Workshop is one of those labels that has always operated at the fringes of genre. Deep house and techno are the loose starting points in many cases, but artists never fail to veer off into the shadowy nether worlds that surround those basic forms. Kolorit does that here with two intriguing cuts all with the same name. The first has lumpy scattered drums, scraping sounds, ticking hi-hats and freaky noise samples all peppering them. The second has haunting chords sequences over a ticking sound that is coated in hiss and crackle. It's late night and mysterious. The third has clattering percussion and shimmering synths that rise and fall and build in tension and intensity.

Review: The Homemade Sound System rolls out another of its fine and heavyweight dancehall and ragga fusions here. It's a fifth outing from this promising label and finds Krikor at the buttons. 'Captivation Riddim' is pure carnage, a prickly mix of broken drum loops and snappy metallic hits underpinned by pulsating bass thrusts. 'Liberation Riddim' then appeared on the reverse and is a brilliantly bold and physical workout with stepping drum patterns and more steel-plated hits under refracted vocals that bring rawness and mayhem to any dancefloor.

Review: Australian bass collective Echo Chamber get busy with this supreme VA featuring a range of talented friends old and new. LQ takes the lead with the sublime 'Way Down' that bubbles and flexes in two system-primed forms: the spacious heavyweight Dubkasm mix and LQ and MSHCode's own breakbeat-heavier shakedown. Flip for more LQ goodies as he links up with Kloke for the fittingly titled groove-up 'Computer Bubblers' while Duburban and Galvatron finish the EP with the furious drum funk up 'Let Off The Music'. Review: Koffee is the next generation of Jamaican reggae artist who is reinvigorating the reagge-pop world. She is still only 22 but already had a global following and an influence almost as big. Her 2018 tune 'Toast' was a huge smash that found its way onto Barrack Obama's coveted playlist and then the year later she followed it up with a Grammy win for Best Reggae Album. Until recently she has managed all this success with only a relatively small number of tunes available for streaming.
