  1. Peter Abdul & The Abeng Musical Box - "Inflation" (2:55)
  2. Russ D In Front Room Studio - "Inflation" (Dubwise) (2:57)
Review: Italian label Dig This Way serves up a third sizzling offering, this time featuring Nigerian singer Peter Abdul. He does his heart aching work over a solid rhythm from Abeng's Musical Box and the results are steeped in romance and yearning. A flip side dub from Russ Disciple is also well worth checking for its smart effects and fathom deep bass. Abdul is a relative unknown but for his 1984 album Get Down With Me, which head in a more boogie and funk direction. Regardless, this is a tasty dub, make no mistake.

  2. Lion Stride Dub (3:52)
  3. Lioness Step (3:49)
  4. Lioness Stride (3:50)
Review: Kibir La Amlak is coming on strong in June with not one but two new offerings on regular home Indicia Dubs. "Lion Step" is another fresh and forward looking four track 10" with a thoroughly futurist twist on the tried and tested dub template. The shimmering leads glisten like buildings in some high rise metropolis, while the snaking leads and stoner effects all add to the escapism. The titular track leads proceedings in slick fashion, while "Lioness Step" slows down to a more meditative pace, with swagger bass for company.

  4. 4D Dub (3:40)
Review: London sound system crew, live show and record label Kibir La Amlak, founded in 2009 by Jamie JT Thomas, has been busy of late, and the fruits of their labour are now shining through with a third EP on Indica Dubs in June alone. "Eye | Eye" is the most dreamy and detached dub of the recent run of offerings. It has almost nostalgic leads up top, shining bright on a summer's day while smooth bass shapes and wavy drum lines all sinking you into something of a reverie. Various iterations come from the other three dubs, meaning there is something for every mood and setting.

  4. Divine Timing (3:42)
Review: The always on point iNdicia Dubs invite you to get down to their latest riddim at the hands of Kibir La Amlak. Entitled '"Ancient Pulse" this new vinyl only missive has an enacting lead line that flutters away over this label's trademark drums: they are neon, steel plated, contemporary and do a good job of making you move. A tripper dub takes care of the A1 while on the flip there are even more whacked out versions with endless echo and reverb and natty keys, while "Divine Timing" is driven by a drilling bassline that burrows superbly deep.

  2. World Struggle (Ambient dub) (3:06)
  3. World Struggle (feat Danny Coxson) (4:44)
Review: Italy's Babe Roots crew show off their silky dub techno credentials here with a couple of immersive new singles. "Music Mission" (feat Galas) is a bottomless cut with warped bass rumbles and endless echo overlaid by a classic reggae vocal from Galas. "World Struggle" (Ambient dub) casts you free from the dance floor with its floating chords full of grainy greyness and cloudy tension. The EP highlight might be "World Struggle" (feat Danny Coxson), a heavyweight, slow motion dub with earth shattering kicks and a deeply buried low end oscillation that's detailed with thunder claps and a soulful Danny Coxson musing on struggle up top.

  1. My Jamaican Dub (2:34)
  2. The Healer (2:55)
Review: The always excellently go slow and tropical sounds of Big Crown now look to Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band for covers of two classics. Up first is Grace Jones' nightclub classic "My Jamaican Guy" while on the flip is Erykah Badu's tribute to the legendary J Dilla, "The Healer". Both retain the essence of the original but come with loose hand claps, shimmering steel drums that bring coastal breezes, sand and sun into the equation and leave you laying horizontal. These are fine interpretations of top notch source material.

Review: Here comes a heavyweight, summer ready dub designed for naughtiness. It lands just in time for pubs and bars reopening so expect to hear it bleeding out into he streets form cars, sound systems and balconies as people soak up some rays. The explosive a-side features legendary MC and Brixton local Brother Culture with his "Balance", featuring vocal odes to the herb and wobbling riddims. On the b-side is the superbly heavy "Use it With Caution Dub" where the brass of the Ital Horns takes centre stage alongside dub master Jamtone.

  1. Johnny Clarke - "You I Love" (3:17)
  2. Ring Craft Posse - "You I Love" (version) (2:51)
Review: Mister Tipsy's next dub diamond is an old treasure from Johnny Clarke, who put out "You I Love" in 1986 at the height of the roots and reggae and dub crossover. The rhythm is by Tyrone Evans from his tune "How Sweet It Is" and here gets repacked with fresh words from Clarke. It's a breezy, romantic tune with claps you soon went on to hear in early house music. The flip is a super deep cut jam, with cavernous and pillow bass and endless echo to die for. Add in the loopy lead which melts to nothing over and over again and you have a real classic.

Review: Jamaican label Mister Tipsy have dug out two previously unreleased gems from Culture, the roots reggae group founded in 1976. They were recorded in the mid eighties with JA producer Blackbeard and roll nice and deep. "Wah Fi We" has pixelated chords that take you straight back to the era over meandering bass and drums. Acoustic guitar riffs and ticking hi hats all flesh out the groove, while the flip side is a rough version that sounds even more lived in and frayed and authentic.

  3. Signs Of The Times (dub mix 2) (3:38)
Review: Eastern Roots have built up a small but well formed discography since debuting 2012. It was in 2018 that this particular wax first landed and is now made available again during these red hot days of summer 2020. "Signs Of The Times" is a playful and mysterious jam which is in no hurry to go anywhere, instead looping the same flute lines up top and natty chords over hot-stepping drums. A meandering lead does eventually join the party and only serves to heighten to the trip. On the flip, two different versions strip things back in brain frying and dubbed out ways.

  1. Pumping In (2:31)
  2. Knock On Wood (2:37)
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing "Reggae Cut Loud" series of seven-inch singles, Harlem Shuffle Records have gathered together two suitably rare gems from the undisputed king of rocksteady, Alton Ellis, neither of which have previously featured on a "45". A-side "Pumping In", an early rocksteady treat, is rich in R&B style guitar riffs, warm bass and an echo-laden vocal from Ellis. It was recorded in 1970 but for one reason or another only surfaced a few years ago. Flipside "Knock On Wood", a cover of the Eddie Floyd soul favourite, was recorded a number of times by Ellis; this version is the superior 1972 Joe Gibbs take, which boasts some superb Hammond organ sounds and a defiantly dub-wise reggae riddim. It's absolutely essential.

  1. Run Come Rally (3:17)
  2. Rally Dub (3:18)
Review: Vivian Jackson's work is being reissued a few times this month. Pressure Sounds opt for his "Run Come Rally" from 1992. It is a stone cold classic of the early roots ear and on the flip is a nicely twisted dub version that retains the vocal but does plenty of trippy things to it with endless amounts of echo and reverb. Recorded by Lee Perry at Black Ark Studios in 1974, this is the sort of haunting tune that is also hugely stirring and has atmosphere to spare. Comes in a hand stamped bag.

Review: The first volume in the Lickshot series serves up two almighty slabs of reggae and dancehall-influenced hip-hop from two of the biggest names in the game. On side A you'll find an edited version of Jay-Z's "Bam" from 2017 album "4:44", where the long-serving rapper trades verses with Damian Marley over a sparse beat and sampled reggae horns. Over on the flip dancehall vocalist Spragga Benz guests on Foxy Brown"Oh Yeah", a hybrid hip-hop/ragga workout . Like its' A-side companion, it's a weighty, club-ready rocker that should be in every hip-hop head's collection.

  1. Survival (3:16)
  2. Survival (dub) (3:16)
Review: The long reliable WhoDemSound imprint is once again coming correct here with a heavy 7" of futurist dub pressure. Kai Dub is the man behind the music and lays down a woodpecker like percussive line, with synths melting and drifting off to the horizon as the fat bottom drums wiggle below. Oodles of echo and revel make the track as full as you could imagine, then the flip side dub does away with the lead to really drag you down into the depths of bass. These are two rolling rhythms that you will never want to end.

  2. Chakatack - "What About Your Dub" (4:06)
Review: Keith & Tex are best known for their "Stop That Train" fame, but now come good with a hot new tune filled with OG roots goodness. The excellent Soul Of Africa act as backing and to make this a lushly orchestrated tune with lazy lead trumpets and a bubbly bassline. Vocals muse on class, the divide between rich and poor and plenty more socially and politically sensitive subjects that have resonated for many years. On the flip, it's a trip into spaced out dub and liquid synth puddles with so much echo you will end up not knowing which way is left and which is right.

Review: Talented singer Keithus Dimits Selassie I has a deep emotion to the tone and message of his music. It is perfect for more spiritual dub sounds and that's the case here. His interpretation here rides nicely on the lazy rhythm below, with acoustic riffs dancing in mid air above puddles of echo. On the flip, Roberto Sanchez stepped up at Lone Ark studios to craft his own slow motion version that is a perfect partner for the a-side. This is a serious piece of 7" wax that packs a punch on many levels.

  2. Dan Taliras - "In A Dub" (3:51)
Review: Vocalist Eva Keyes and producer Dan Taliras first worked together back in 2018 on the joint single "Tired of the City". Since then they've released a handful of other collaborative records, with Taliras handling the obligatory flipside dubs. Like much of their work, "In A Crisis" is a revivalist roots reggae number in which Keyes delivers socially conscious lyrics atop a chunky riddim, crunchy Clavinet lines and hazy horns. As is traditional, Taliras delivers a Dub mix on side B, skilfully re-framing the track as a sparse, echoing and deep mixture of skeletal grooves, echoing vocals and effects-laden instrumental snippets.
