Review: 333 UK shed backscattered light on another late 1980s anti-apartheid reggae opus, Bionic Singer's 'Botha Warning'. Salvaged from the formerly seafloor dwelling chest that is the Jamaazima label back catalogue, 'Botha Warning' is a star riddim from the late great Osbert "Madoo" Maddo, who was brought up in East Kingston and as a child attended the legendary Alpha Boys School. Over his career he recorded mainly with Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson, and for Winston Riley's famous Techniques label. The Bionic Singer alias came later, after a move to New York from Jamaica and brief hiatus; releasing on the Bronx-based Jamaazima, 'Warning To Botha' is a bloodthirsty send for South Africa's then prime minister P.W. Botha, set to a sturdy bubbler backing - the track indicts his policies as a key cause for the brutal segregation of the period.

They have been digging in the vaults again and come up with a new 12" which they have pressed on nice heavyweight wax, and the sounds more than deserve that. Hortense Ellis and General Roy's 'Give Thanks' is a crucial rhythm with lazy chords and guitars, DIY percussive sounds and deft little keys with a yearning vocal up top. Lawes Rockers is responsible for the flipside version and as you may expect it's dubbed out and reverb-heavy.

Review: This cracking Leroy Smart tune was recorded at Wackie's and has never been on its own 45rpm before. It was cut to the killer Love Joys' 'Studio Man' rhythm and is a mid-tempo jam with tumbling sou bass and natty chords hanging in the air above the rhythm. The vocals muse on the power of reggae music while some nice tinkles on the keys bring a bit of light to the dusty drums. Flip it over for a more paired-back dub version, 'Reggae Man.' Review: A long-standing figure on the London jazz scene, trumpeter Harry Beckett kept his music fresh over a long career, and none more so than on his debut On-U Sound release in 2008 produced by Adrian Sherwood, which invites reggae and dance music influences to happily live alongside his modal jazz flavours. Now reissued posthumously, The Modern Sound Of Harry Beckett tracks the legacy of this contemporary jazz eminent, who passed away in 2010. Beckett channels both his Caribbean roots and trumpeting abilities, offering a novel confounding of sparse, skittish beats verging on digidub, with spryly slick soundings of the horn. Made up of isolated recordings laid down by Beckett, and then celebratedly combined with dancehall and dub movements afterwards, our fave has to be the unabashedly dubstep godsend, 'Like You Didn't Know', which spreads Beckett's horns out to virtuosic effect, against a wickedly womping wash.

Review: Dubbing to the point of frenzied self-destruction is what is implied in the name of Prince Jammy's 'Kamikazi Dub', one of the most beloved records in Prince Jammy's dub discography. And yet, when met with this Jamdung reissue, we find ourselves caught off guard by its rather counter-intuitive mood of ease and peace; an undisturbedly breezy feel wafts from this album's various riddims, grooves and bubbles, in stark contrast to the violent force portrayed on the karate-kick front cover, not to mention the transgressively outta-control title. But perhaps that's Jammy's point: calm in force: a sense of calm is in force. Throughout, titles like 'Fist Of Fury', 'Oragami Black Belt', 'Throne Of Blood' and 'Swords Of Vengeance' teem about the wax, but the sound itself is of simple reverence, not militant might: it's as though, through the use of simple verb springs and jolly cross-stick slaps, a mute dubbing engineer and protagonist is simply able to bob and swan about the halls of power, looking in on various feudal Edo-period assemblies, Shogunate thrones and war rooms with satisfied glee.

Review: Nope, sadly it is not that Prince Philip - the late Queen's husband - though boy would we love to hear what he could do on a mixing desk with those porcine fingers of his. Instead, this is a collection of sounds dedicated to the work of the late "Prince" Philip Smart, who was the first-ever engineer at King Tabby's legendary Tubby studio beside the boss himself. He was key to sharing the early sound of dub though he was rarely credited at the time. Tracks like 'Not Gonna Give Up' aim to uplift Africa's people, while 'Feel No Way' is a minimalistic rub-a-dub tune with understated backing. Tosh's unrelenting advocacy for justice and his Rastafarian beliefs permeate the album, reflecting his rebellious spirit and commitment to social equality. His solo career, following the dissolution of The Wailers in 1974, was defined by a fearless approach to music and activism, until his life was tragically cut short in 1987. Mama Africa remains one of Tosh's most significant works.
