Work All Day
Cat: ORD 23. Rel: 28 Jul 20
  1. Barry Biggs - "Work All Day" (3:26)
  2. The Dynamites - "Play All Night" (3:29)
  3. Clarence Wears - "Working Mood" (2:50)
  4. The Dynamites - "Got To Work" (3:05)
Review: Only Roots come through with a classic wedge from Barry Biggs. These pure vibes first came in 1976 and on this package you're also treated to the Clarence Wears guitar piece from the same year, plus a couple of spicy dubs. "Work All Day" is a golden offering with an aloof and soulful vocal that drifts up top like a wispy cloud on a summer's day. Muted chords enrich things and the natty riffs keep things subtly funky. That original Wears guitar piece is a real heart wrencher - the guitar rings out into the sky with oodles of reverb giving it even more poignancy.

Review: Charlie Bethel Wilder has been recording as Captain Planet for the best part of 15 years. In that time he's delivered a string of vibrant, kaleidoscopic albums that draw heavily on Latin and Afro-Cuban music in all its forms. "No Visa", his latest album, is another deliciously summery affair that adds a heavy dose of reggaeton rhythms and mutant R&B beats into his tropical synth-pop pot. The results are uniformly excellent all told, with highlights including the humid, synth-laden bubbliness of Patty Cake, the radio-friendly rush of Chico Mann hook-up "Rebosando", the rainforest-ready weight of "Fly Where You Want" and the head-nodding tweaked R&B/triple-time eccentricity of "Yalla" featuring KarenBe.

Review: Having road tested these jams at huge gigs around the world before the lockdown locked us down, Fat Freddy's Drop now unleashes these dub wise detonations. Special Edition Part 1 is said to be the first edition of a long promised double album with separate chapters. There are plenty of song writing skills on show here as well as technical innovations and real studio magic with soul drenched dub, old school reggae and new school vocal riddims all sounding super fresh.

Review: "Work Up A Sweat" was Gregory Isaac's 1994 opus, and it showcased the laidback style he had become so well known and loved for. Often described as the 'ultimate rude boy Reggae star', his own African Museum label originally put this one out with coproduction credits going to his wife June. Big cuts like "Got to Come Back" and "Lead Me" feature, with plenty of metallic leads, acoustic riffs and deep cut bas sounds all helping colour the airwaves and sink you into the vibes. This is a first ever vinyl reissue and it comes on 140g vinyl for extra heft.

Crystal
Crystal (clear vinyl 7")
Cat: NNK 009. Rel: 21 Jul 20
  1. Crystal (3:50)
  2. Answer (3:57)
Review: As the small but well formed Nunki label traces towards double figures, mainstay Ivan Dubious comes through with more of his haunting, spooky and spacious dubs. "Crystal" is the opener, with a wobbling low end that is fat and fizzing with meance, with echoing hits ringing out up top. ON the flipped, "Answer" is a little lighter, with upbeats and mesmeric harmonicas bleeding out of the mix and taking you on a spiritual trip. It's a tight and well crafted 7" once again from this German label, then.

  1. Safari (3:56)
  2. Safari (Lexx Discomix) (7:38)
Review: Emotional Rescue return to the work of Noel Williams as King Sporty. The Miami-based Jamaican made some seminal, stunning music that presaged the increasing importance of synthesisers in disco and dance music overall. This time the label have decided to give a regal airing to a cut previously only available squeezed onto the Deep Reggae Roots LP. "Safari" is a heady brew that keeps a necessary skank in the groove while channeling the nagging funk of The Meters and heading somewhere exotic. At just under four minutes, it's the kind of jam that warrants an extended treatment, and who better to do a respectful job than Lexx, who more than doubles the run time of the track on the B side.

You Have It (Extended)
  1. Barrington Levy - "You Have It" (6:28)
  2. GG's All Stars - "You Have A Dub" (4:39)
Review: Legendary dancehall and reggae artist Barrington Levy started out with a fine run of albums in his early years, and then switched to serving up a steady and solid stream of singles. Some of the most famous ones include "Even Tide Fire a Disaster" and "I'm Not in Love", as well as "You Have It" which is presented here as a nice extended version. It features a pained vocal over a fat and dumpy groove with some tropical percussion and warming chords to help oil the mood. GG's All Stars step up on the flip with a version that is heavy and lazy in all the right ways.

  1. IZ 200 (6:09)
  2. Drifting Forwards (4:37)
  3. C Rota (6:45)
  4. Mondo (6:18)
Review: Well Street continues to be a hotbed of innovation in the cloudy climes of contemporary UK techno, with label mainstay Loop LF returning for his third EP. The record opens in subliminal style with the restrained, heavy-stepping sideswipe of "IZ 200" before melting into "Drifting Forwards," a richly dubbed-out dreamscape of clicking and popping percussion and sparkly chord drops with a purposeful swagger around the rhythm section. The B side kicks off with the nervy minimalist techno abstraction of "C Rota", where sound design plays a vital role alongside cyclical rhythms in creating a truly transcendent yet strikingly sparse sound. "Mondo" closes proceedings with one of the more forthright tunes on the record, following a strident if still proudly leftfield groove that captures a little '90s downtempo funk and gives it a cosmic, hi-def refit.

How Long (7")
Cat: DSR 18375. Rel: 20 Jul 20
  1. How Long (3:44)
  2. How Long (version) (3:28)
Review: Culture began his career in the dancehall while still at school and his rare ability even at that age led teachers to advise him to pursue a career in the Jamaican recording industry. He soon went on to pick up plenty of tips and tricks from working with King Tubby before establishing his own name. He even moved to London for a while and continued to hone his craft and "How Long" proved to be one his biggest success along side "After So Many Years" and "Original Days." It's a still futuristic sounding cut with sci-fi effects and crisp hits as well as that trademark vocal work.

Review: A recent collaboration between dub producer Manasseh and virtuoso violin-viola player Praise gave rise to a full length called Manasseh Meets Praise. It's a fresh blend of classical and reggae that has heavy rhythms and gorgeous instrumental layers that carry you away. The lies of David Roddigan were a huge fan and now some of the key cuts from it are presented don this vital standalone 12" by Roots Garden. There are breezy summer rollers and pained dub anthems included along the way.

Review: Radio DJ, studio engineer, singer and producer, Dread At The Controls label owner and sometime The Clash collaborator Mikey Dread debuted with this record in 1979. It's filled with mesmeric studio trickery, and really takes the dub sound into the future on a wave of sci-fi imagery and cosmic rays. It has a sense of humour too, in some of the more tongue in cheek sound designs as well plenty of fat and flabby dubs to provide you with plenty of smokey moments and lazy grooves to sink into to.

Review: The vital Only Roots label turns to Nyah Hunter for a previously unreleased b-side. Now pressed up onto its own 7", complete with a dub, the song appeared for the first time in 1973 on the compilation "Pipeline". It was recorded at Federal Records Studios in the early seventies and was produced by Alvin Ranglin. It exudes all the earthy vibes you'd expect of that period, the rumbling drums, fat bass and aloof vocals. It's as sweet as chocolate and smooth as silk.

Review: Rasmus Allin has kicked off a brand new solo alias for this new Treacherous Dub album on Copenhagen-based label StereoRoyal. It is in part an homage to the original Jamaican dub sound but with live drums and instruments also layered in with electronic sounds and a celebratory vibe. It's filled with purely instrumental tracks - a first for this long standing artist - and features an lithograph artwork made by the artist himself. Sonically it's richly rewarding, with bottomless echo and rugged riffs on some of the uptempo tunes meshing nicely with more languid and laid back dubs elsewhere.
