Review: Gerd Jansen's Running Back is brilliantly and effortlessly eclectic. It's a label that does easy to love house anthems as well as more experimental fair and plenty in between. And that's where Ede & Deckert sit - in a world to the left of centre with catchy synth tunes feat. Sargland. 'Immer' is their latest and pairs doleful guitar riffs a la Joy Division with soul vocals and slick drums that will work in the right dance floor setting. It's a great sound and one that has the potential to become something of an unlikely underground dance hit. The B-side has an instrumental that allows the synth work to shine more.

Review: This marks a first ever reissue of this cult-status punk-funk, no wave electro post-punk fusion 45 from 1979. It's by post-Wayne County Electric Chairs and has been produced by David Cunningam and now expanded to 12". The first tune 'So Many Ways' has Val Haller on lead vocals and sounded at the time very different from anything else the band had done. A hypnotic, sure charged groove that still sounds years ahead of its time. 'J'attends Les Marines' is a rework of 'Waiting For The Marines' from the Things Your Mother album but with some added dub and experimental flourishes. Two versions of 'So Many Ways' then close out this fine curio.

Review: The Essence Of Life is very much listening to the sort of sublime soul music that is always offered up by the Epsilon label if you ask us. This latest limited edition 45rpm features their 'You're An Angel' which is one of the many tunes that made the group such favourites back in the seventies. They formed in Charlotte North Carolina at Johnson C Smith University and are made up of a pair of basketball players who were allegedly overheard singing in the shower and asked if they wanted to form a group. They went on to perform with plenty of stars of the day and as you can hear from this 7" their falsettos are to die for.

Review: Legendary UK indie hopefuls turned leftfield dance-pop institution Everything But the Girl aka Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn have got their first album in over 20 years dropping around about now. Before that though they have commissioned some superb remixes of the lead single. One is from Four Tet, whom they say they have always loved for the "meditative but propulsive thing in his music. The restraint mixed with momentum." He pulls off that trick again here with a fine remix, and he also supplies an instrumental, then comes extended club and dub mixes of the original from Ben Watt and Bruno Ellingham.

Review: Eyes of the Amaryllis is a collective that announced its arrival with a debut self-titled album back in 2021 on cassette tape. A year later they landed on Horn of Plenty with a second album which came on vinyl, and now they offer up a first 45rpm in the form of 'Lunchtime On Earth' on Swedish label I Dischi Del Barone. All four tracks are decidedly short and to the point and sit somewhere between post-rock and experimental with elements of lo-fi, folk and world & country. It's the title track that stands out with its doleful guitars, plenty of echo and drifting, wordless vocal sounds making for a beautifully melancholic vibe.

Review: Although it didn't make huge waves commercially on its initial release in the early 90s, East Village's sole album, Drop Out, has long been considered a cult classic by observers of British indie music in the pre-Britpop era. Listening back three decades on, it's easy to see why. The band's sound was simultaneously nostalgic and contemporary, combining wide-eyed late 60s psychedelic pop flavours, minor chord-heavy 80s alternative jangliness and nods to soul-inspired Mod stompers with the distinctively loose, funky and loved-up MDMA-pop so beloved of indie bands at the turn of the 90s. This anniversary reissue does a great job in celebrating both band and album, with the original ten-track set coming with a bonus disc of singles and alternative versions. Throw in on-point sleeve notes by Jon Savage and you have an irresistible package.

Review: Rhino have embarked on a grand reissue mission and plan to put out all of the Echo & The Bunnymen's first four albums. Here we have a remastered version of Ocean Rain on 180-gram black vinyl. It was the fourth of the band's albums and was related back in 1984. It reached number four on the UK Albums Chart thanks to singles like 'Silver', 'Seven Seas' and personal favourite 'The Killing Moon.' The album got the band back to the top of their game after the rather less than warm reception to previous album Porcupine the year before thanks to its new found romantic sweetness and the band's bittersweet melodies.

Review: It's now 25 years since Echo and the Bunnymen reformed (the Liverpool-born band initially disbanded in 1993) and recorded 'Evergreen', their seventh studio album. While reviews were mixed at the time, there's no doubt that it's as jangly, timeless-sounding and sonically gorgeous as any of their more acclaimed albums of the '80s and early '90s. Given that it was released at the height of 'Britpop' (Liam Gallagher provided backing vocals on 'Nothing Lasts Forever', a by-product of Oasis recording in the studio next-door), it's sound is far baggier, looser and warmer than much of the music being made by their younger rivals. On this expanded anniversary edition, the original (if remastered) set is joined by a disc of live recordings, both from their own shows and promotional radio sessions, all of which were laid to tape between 1997 and '99.

Review: For their sixth full length album 'Violence', melancholic Birmingham alt-rockers Editors have adopted a grander synth-pop sound to frame their typically dark songwriting in. This change in direction comes from collaborating with the album's producer Leo Abraham and composer Blank Mass, who helped the band hone their electronic craft. The songwriting pairs grandiose stadium riffs with assertive synth-work; 'Hallelujah (So Low)' goes straight for the jugular with fat synth leads and lo-fi drums, and the chorus of lead single 'Magazine' balances sections of punchy electronic swagger with singalong melodic euphoria. On 'No Sound But The Wind', there's a glimpse of an earlier Editors sound, more atmospheric and spacious than the tracks that surround it - unsurprising as it's a song the band first debuted back at Glastonbury 2008 and have been re-working since. Following 2015's somewhat confused 'In Dream', Editors sound reinvigorated and confident in the direction 'Violence' is taking them in.

In truth, Eels started work on it in 1998, but it wouldn't see the light of day until 2005. Marking the start of a new era for the band, contractually at least - their deal with David Geffen and Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks Records having dissolved the previous year - the album was high concept, too.

Suddenly the extended production period makes sense. Then you see it has 33 tracks listed on the sleeve and it all becomes clear. Review: Birds In The Ground is the 2004 album by the American indie rocker Eiafuawn, aka. Duster member Clay Parton. Fans of the eminent slowcore band will be pleasantly surprised by this comparatively obscure curio, which peppers its folky-bluesy, nigh poppy singer-songwriting basis with bursts of noise and sprawling sonic collage. The reissue also includes bonus tracks and unreleased demos, but the main wonder is its audiophilic, emo drawl - a complex project for sure, and one we're sad didn't hear more exploration.

Review: When Mark Eitzel first unveiled 'The Ugly American' there were a few murmurs about the fact this was his second album of non-original material, seizing on moments from his back catalogue with a revisionist's eye (or ear). But this was missing the point, a collaborative concept sees work written during his American Music Club era given an injection of new inspiration thanks to a group of Greek musicians he hooked up with. Bringing winds, reeds, bouzouki and mandolins, among other instruments, the result is transcendental and yet familiar, a folk-ish journey through the mythologised landscapes of southern Europe as seen through the outsider's gaze, with a culture clash at play thanks to the western indie pop foundations. The combination works effortlessly, with some moments of real ingenuity, and better yet it will sound great on 180g vinyl.

Review: Greater Manchester art-rock auteurs Elbow return with their highly anticipated tenth full-length Audio Clarity. Known for their "one for the masses, one for the few" dynamic that saw 2019's experimental Giants Of All Sizes offset by 2021's lush, intimate Flying Dream 1; their latest venture appears poised to recapture the avant-garde post-rock machinations of their earliest work, pre-dating the Mercury Prize winning success of 2008's The Seldom Seen Kid, and harking all the way back to their more challenging Cast Of Thousands days. Described by vocalist/lyricist Guy Garvey as "gnarly, seedy grooves created by us playing together in garagey rooms", the mathematic, slow burn of lead single 'Lovers' Leap' twists odd time signatures around interlocked grooves while building towards a post-funk finish, sonically and compositionally highlighting their more involved, frenetic approach as opposed to their recent output's more minimal set-building. In short, Elbow are back for themselves and whoever else cares to follow them yet again down their labyrinthine tapestry of artful ruminations.

Review: If you read any interviews around Elbow's ninth studio album, Guy Garvey's open admissions that this is the Bury, Greater Manchester band's most patient and hushed work to date are unlikely to pass you by. The frontman is clearly pleased with what the outfit managed to pull together, offering a great example of why remote working during lockdown actually led to some pretty inspired projects if you look in the right places.
Whether Flying Dream 1 would have sounded like this had it been made through a standard studio process is a big question mark we're not in a position to answer. The group themselves are probably still pondering that one. What is clear is that it feels like a coherent, complete work, which is somewhat at odds with the reality of members contributing individual elements from different locations. Review: If there's been one defining element of 2017 so far, it's been the stress that it's put a good proportion of the Western world under, and with this in mind it seems that there couldn't be a better time for a new Elbow album, and for the always mildly world-weary yet magnanimous and uplifting strains of Guy Garvey and co. to offer succour. Just as well then that it's perhaps their most richly crafted effort to date, offering warm optimism, a widescreen sweep of sound and their mainman's plangent croon in full effect, amidst an aural landscape that will do more than satisfy long terms fans of their elegiac art, rather something of a balm for these afflicted times.

Review: If you read any interviews around Elbow's ninth studio album, Guy Garvey's open admissions that this is the Bury, Greater Manchester band's most patient and hushed work to date are unlikely to pass you by. Review: The 1993 debut full-length from "Satanic industrial metal" envelope pushers, The Electric Hellfire Club, was a perfect storm of sex, drugs, and serial killer infatuation dressed up in gothic, metallic, near techno mayhem. Following mastermind Thomas Thorn's departure from My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, 'Burn, Baby, Burn!', would serve as the birth of edgy ideals, delivered with sonic abandon and tongue located firmly in cheek, while samples of low budget horror movies as well as invoking Satanic church founder Anton LaVey, served as the hysteric cherry on top of the dodgy sundae, designed to provoke and bemuse in equal measure. LaVey would later go on to ordain Thorn as a priest of the Satanic church, but that's a story for another time.

Review: Mobile Fidelity have mastered from Electric Light Orchestra's original audio tapes for this hybrid and numbered SACD version of the band's fourth studio album, Eldorado. At the time it came with a concept that follows a Walter Mitty-like character who journeys into fantasy worlds via dreams to get himself away from daily disillusionment. Musically, the album reaches for the sky with bold and imaginative worlds taking you away from the mundanity of the everyday and into a universe of cinematic sounds. This long player is now almost 50 years old but still very much sounds futuristic, which is testament to visionary composer-musician Jeff Lynne's skill.

Sure, he might have cracked, to some extent at least, the mass-marketed electric car, and all the best to him in the space race. Nevertheless, it's disputable whether or not he was ever quite the visionary Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan were in the early-mid-1970s. The undisputed heyday of Electric Light Orchestra, fourth album Eldorado was arguably at the peak of their creative force. Already having firmly established their sound - a surreal hybrid of bar rock, soul, blues, and grand strings - this record really sees them explore the possibilities of that abstract brew. Better yet, ears were open enough at the time to ensure they didn't languish in obscurity, sole reserve of the obsessives or deliberately contrary listeners, and instead claimed a spot in the upper echelons of British pop at the time.

Review: British synth-pop supergroup Electronic consisted of Bernard Sumner of New Order, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys and Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk. The combined clout of these names surely amounted to enough credit to patent the name "Electronic", which always to us felt partially like an attempt to become synonymous with the music genre itself (as if these guys weren't synonymous with it already). On Get The Message, a 2006 compilation named after the second single from their debut album, we hear a thorough checking of their contribution to the golden decade that is the 1990s, cycling chronologically through the group's greatest hits, as well as some extra rarities and tidbits for curious fans.

Review: Spring is certainly in the air on the third outing from Elephant Gym. The Taiwanese (Kaohsing) rock band have set out to delve pretty deep into our minds, projecting sounds that bore holes and become earworms, bringing about a state that's almost hypnotic. The impressive thing is, that's done with a collection of 12 tracks that pack so much personality and - at times - energy, they couldn't possibly have this effect.

Review: After relocating from Colombia to Spain in the early 1970s, sibling duo Elkin & Nelson recorded a string of albums that became hits across the Latin world. 'Angeles Y Demines', a 1974 double-album that has here been given the remastered reissue treatment, is arguably the strongest of the lot. It's certainly the one that Balearic heads return yo regularly, featuring as it does the scene classic 'Jibaro (Enrolle)' alongside many more slices of Latin/Flamenco/Funk/Jazz-Funk fusion. Their sound was unique but undeniably weighty and dancefloor-ready, with the album's many highlights including 'Abran Passo-Ahoa (Enrolle)', 'Anacaona', and their dense, sunrise-ready cover of 'Ain't No Sunshine'.

Review: As well as his prog rock god status as part of ELP, English musician Keith Emerson is well known for his soundtracks for the likes of Dario Argento's 1980 movie Inferno. This Murderock album was written in part as a tribute to the master of Italian horror Lucio Fulci and was first released in 1985, described at the time as being like Flashdance meets Psycho. It's a mix of dance tunes for the day and some dramatic scores and was first reissued in 1993. This version adds four never before released tunes which were used in the backing to the most macabre scenes of the movie.

Review: Leeds indie stars English Teacher serve up a fantastic debut album here with 'This Could Be Texas'. Preceding hits 'The World's Biggest Paving Slab', 'Nearly Daffodils' and 'Mastermind Specialism' have all topped BBC 6 Music playlists and helped build the band quite the following. Their rise continued to soar after they appeared on Later With...Jools Holland, and they have since played a sold-out UK and US tour. Review: Ensamble Acustico was conceived in the early 1980s by Billy Pereyra and Eduardo Roland in Blancarena, a resort on the coast of the Rio de la Plata, east of Colonia, Uruguay. In 1989, after only a few performances, the duo released their first and only album: a cassette of eight songs titled Un Exceso De Luz (An Excess Of Light), co-released by independent labels Perro Andaluz (Uruguay) and Circe (Argentina). The album was critically acclaimed and lauded as the first 'new age' project to come out of Uruguay. Yet lumping Un Exceso De Luz into that most vast and heterogenous confluence of musical genres, akin to 'world music', dismisses the alchemical breakdown of minimalism with gestures of contemporary jazz, exemplified by the shifting harmonic figures of 'En Los Campos de Colonia' ('In the Fields of Colonia'). Pereyra and Roland sound strings in tandem, forming harmonic compositions that generate unexpected resonances. Together they build a climatic character that gives the sound of Ensamble Acustico its most distinctive seal, sharing more with the aesthetics of contemporary jazz than the nebulous new age label.
