A Comforting Notion
A Comforting Notion (12" (indie exclusive))
Cat: SWP 010V. Rel: 24 Mar 23
Consistent Dedication (3:08)
Retributions Of An Awful Life (5:26)
A Comforting Notion (3:36)
24 Hours (4:27)
Review: Heartworms are brand new outfit releasing under Speedy Wunderground - one of the few contemporary imprints giving fresh faces a fighting chance. Their debut EP 'A Comforting Notion' embeds the dystopian vision of one Jojo Orme into our minds - the frontwoman is a grandiose performer, giving tired tropes of delicate female bandleaders a run for its money through means like gritty post-punk and dark synth instrumentation, and a macabre sense of humour. The band's name references a heart-defecting parasite that is commonly found in dogs and is spread through mosquito bites - but don't worry, this EP will make your heart feel nothing but joy (permitting, at least, that you're a fan of bleak music!)

Boogie Chillen (3:11)
Boogie Chillen #2 (2:48)
Review: It's hard to comprehend how significant it was when John Lee Hooker first recorded 'Boogie Chillen' in Detroit way, way back in 1948. Once the track was licensed to Modern Records, it went on to sell close to a million copies in the space of a year, at a time when recorded music was still finding its feet, and from that moment on Hooker's legendary status was confirmed until his death in 2001. Now Ace are commemorating 75 years since that landmark song was recorded, capturing two different takes of a track recorded by one man singing his honest truth and creating seismic shifts in popular culture, before such a thing even existed.

Look At The Lights Go Up

Hopscotch - "Look At The Lights Go Up" (2:20)
Andwella - "Hold Onto Your Mind" (3:49)
Review: Guerssen Records specialise in reissuing obscure psychedelic music from the past, and here they home in on two early British psychedelic bands, Hopscotch and Andwella. 'Look At The Lights Go Up' is Hopscotch's contribution, with the band made up of former members of the Eyes and Tomorrow, and the track comes as a rare and unreleased demo of melodic trip-sat illumination and lyrical nonsensicality ("This lady from the forest of Manhattan...". Andwella's 'Felix' comes to the B-side, and is a formerly unreleased outtake from their second album World's End.

Directive Kill (2:21)
I Won't Forget (2:42)
Review: Out of print for years, The Prowler, the first ever EP by pop punk stalwarts Horror Section, returns under the aegis of the label Eccentric Pop for one last Halloween season. Pressed for the first time on opaque red (/250) and black (/250) vinyl, the album is an emotive blend of horro r- and pop - variants of the band's genre of choice, more than anything flaunting the infectiously low drawl of lead vocalist Tommy Boyer, amid massive grungey guitar propulsions by the Nick Habit and Teflon Dave. The five tracks are like creepy skeletons in closets, each popping out at the listener like emotive ghosts.

Against The Blade (3:25)
Twisted Skin (3:57)
Review: According to news stories when this EP was first announced, The Horrors' own frontman Faris Badwan describes the band's new song, 'Against the Blade', as a "further descent into chaos". A track about giving up hope, abandoning control, and coming to terms with the eternal human position of facing off against the world, rather than actually being part of it.

Listening to the tune now it's easy to buy into that description. The band have always had an uncanny ability to terrify and enthral, and this is a prime example of that. Opening with a searing refrain-cum-wasp-in-jar-noise, we soon explode into a monster metal riff with solid funk undertow, making for a tune that's destined to be a live favourite. Over the other side, 'Twisted Skin' sticks with the industrial-leaning feel.

Dura Dura (4:00)
Duba Duba (3:50)
Review: Borrowing a title from a 50ft sport climbing route in Oliana, Spain, there's definitely something big and wonderfully overbearing about the debut offering from Hot Face. Freshly pressed onto London's revered and always-forward thinking Speedy Wunderground imprint, the work here more than lives up to the label's name, going at listeners with pedal to the metal for the most. Comprising two tracks, an original and 'dub', the opener nods to the likes of King Gizzard and other sprawling, epic prog-metal-psyche outfits, offering up huge guitar solos and switching tempos with cunning, guile and groove. Flip it to find the alternative take, which ups the impact of drums, taking us closer to dance music as it's more widely recognised, and the heyday of big beat, if anyone remembers that one?

Review: Ben Howard was already an instant hit when he released The Burgh Island EP in 2012 in the wake of his debut album. The British singer-songwriter signed to Island and landed himself in the hearts and minds of fans the world over. This particular EP was limited to 1000 copies at the time of release, but it's since gone on to attain some sizable cult status thanks to the use of 'Oats In The Water', which appeared in The Walking Dead and The Innocents, and helped launch video game The Witcher 3. That's a whole lot of outreach, and the rest of the EP matches up to that track's spellbinding qualities, not least the epic eight-minute title piece featuring Monica Heldal.

Review: Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe might sound like the elaborate name of a facetious solo artist, but it's actually a later alias of progressive rock supergroup Yes, after they resolved to stop going by the name Yes. Yes, indeed, this is Yes in reunited form, having packed in the former name with a resounding No. Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe return for this later-career, nine-track smorgasbord, which shows off the group's collaborative-compositional complexity, virtuosic musicianship and belty vocals. Everything from heroic theme music to instrumental ecstatic dances feature here, with the opener potentially especially appealing to DJs.

Review: Marika Hackman returns to the fold with her fourth album Big Sigh, five years on from the release of Any Human Friend. Compared to the more exuberant themes of its predecessor, Big Sigh is a more introspective affair which reacts to the personal challenges Hackman experienced going through lockdown. Lead single 'No Caffeine' sets the tone as a reflection on overcoming anxiety, while 'Hanging' stews on past relationships and the struggle to move on. The topics may be heavy, but Hackman doesn't let them weigh down the exuberant strain of indie rock she has made her name on.

Review: The mega successful debut album from indie-pop sister trio HAIM celebrates its ten year anniversary this year with this deluxe reissue. Featuring hit singles such as 'Falling', 'The Wire', and 'If I Could Change Your Mind', as well as a batch of funky remixes from the likes of Cyril Hahn and Giorgio Moroder, this 2xLP is the ultimate edition for fans of the Los Angeles sisters, who've gone on to collaborate with the likes of Vampire Weekend and star in Paul Thomas Anderson films in the decade since. Days Are Gone was one of those albums that was seemingly everywhere in 2013, and the staying power of these Californian soft-rock tinged pop bangers has aged like the snifters offered at a San Fernando Valley wine country tasting.

Documenting the entirety of their final performance at the dearly departed Roppongi home of Tokyo underground institution SuperDeluxe in November 2018, the music spread across these six sides splits the difference between the guitar-bass-drums power trio moves and experiments with novel instrumentation that have defined the trio's decade of working together. It was proceeded by the title single with a morbid looking video fearing band member Lzzy Hale in a bodybag, and then a run of sold out gigs in club and festivals all around the UK. The full album follows up in fine style and will not disappoint fans. It was produced by Nick Raskulinecz of Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains association with co-production by Scott Stevens and showcases great songwriter laden with mental health, redemption and survival themes.

Review: Here come the Wirral's finest, Half Man Half Biscuit, with their 15th album of offbeat post punk. The track names alone are worth a celebration, not least 'I'm Getting Buried In The Morning', but of course it's the rabble-rousing tunes themselves we're here for. This is the first album since their regular home of Probe Plus shut its doors, but one suspects a simple label change won't have derailed Merseyside's finest from their pursuit of sardonic, sharp as a tack anthems for the disenfranchised and disassociated.

Review: French dream pop breakthrough Halo Maud follows up her debut record Je Suis Une Ile (I Am An Island) with her second ever LP, Celebrate, which lives up to its name in fantastic fashion. Evidently less introspective than her last, the sonic palette throughout this dozen sunbursts suggests Maud has found her inner John Donne; indeed, opener 'Terres Infinies' is a massive crasher of a three-pronged shoegaze, synthwave and art pop sensibility, and both sonically and titularly suggests a new, deterritorial antithesis to the first album's sense of introspection. Organic, well-rounded instrumentation hears Maud traverse infinite terrains of bright tambourines and detuned synths thereafter.

Review: From his roots in Slowdive and Mojave 3 on to working with the likes of Seefeel, Neil Halstead has left a lasting impression on British alternative music. As a solo artist, he's returned focus to a more stripped down, folk-inspired approach, which was last explored on 2012's Palindrome Hunches. It's a heavy-hearted kind of singer-songwriter we hear on this beautiful album, echoing the work of the late Gravenhurst amongst others and nodding back to the sensitive sound of Nick Drake. It's beautiful and sad, like the best folk should be, and this reissue will be warmly received by long-term devotees of Halstead's work.

Review: Wow. To put it mildly. It takes about three minutes of this stunning contemporary classical masterpiece to realise just how breathtaking this contemporary classical masterpiece actually is. So hard is the task of conveying the depth of its beauty we might as well give up now, although there's no harm in trying. As tragic as it is uplifting, subtle but bold, we veer from the sunrise cinematics of "In The Shattering of Things" to mournful melancholia on "We Try To Make Sense Of It All". Strings soar, keys gently play, harmonies so emotive it's enough to break your heart seem to pour from the album. Completing a trilogy catalysed by the death of a loved one, logically - for those who have ever experienced grief in its purest forms - it's as much about the power of silence and what's not there as what's in the score.

Review: Since first joining forces in 2017, Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat have released some of the most magical albums of recent times - sets that cannily combine their mutual love of pastoral music, jazz-funk, library jazz, soundtracks and heady downtempo grooves. The Upturned Glass, the pair's sixth collaborative full-length, is another genuine gem. Highlights come thick and fast, from the skewed, lo-fi jazz-funk warmth of 'Pool In The Rose' and the string-drenched beauty of opener '6,000 Drunks Clinging to a Landslip' (an amusing title for a genuinely moving track), to the chiming, low-slung brilliance of the two-part title track and the emotive, slow-motion ambient-folk beauty of 'Evening Song'.

On the track list you've got Beth Ditto, dirty Preston, Clark Baechle, Tiny E and a remix by Mint Royale, but the real shining light is the man himself, who delivers 14 stone cold jams, from sultry and sexy to drop-top bumpers.

Review: French-German duo Nina Harker are made up of Apolline Schoser and Nocola Henry, who have been testing at the fringes of folk across intermittent albums with an introverted brilliance about them. Now they make a cosy home on Aguirre Records with this extended excursion into their strange sound world, where skewed finger picking and disembodied vocal snatches lope around in a distorted soup, only for Schoser's singing to cut through the mix and bring your focus into a re-calibrated present. It's considered chaos played out with patience, constantly delivering the unexpected and leaving a strong impression from its very first notes to the last.

It comes on two translucent orange vinyl and across the nine tracks the artist really manages to capture the wide spectrum of sounds the Zep were known for. Review: Here comes a special Japanese edition of Harvey Sutherland's superb Boy album. Since debuting in 2013, Mike Katz has released a lot of music under this alias, always flitting between interconnected styles (electronic disco, deep house, jazz-funk, nu-boogie, revivalist New Jersey garage and Italo-disco) without ever laying down an album of all-new music. Boy, then, is a significant milestone in the Melbourne producer's career and offers an exploration of what he calls "neurotic funk" - a boundary-blurring fusion of jammed-out analogue electronics and live instrumentation that draws on a multitude of musical styles without neatly sitting in any one pigeonhole.

Review: Mick Harvey has collaborated with Mexican artist Amanda Acevedo on a series of duets that make up this new album, Phantasmagoria in Blue. The 14 tracks have been taken from a mix of already existing duets, songs that were not duets, as well as some translations from Spanish and one of two original new pieces. The themes running through out it are common to us all - mortality, love and our endless, hapless search for meaning. The resulting record plays out with lush melodies and lots of richly emotional sounds that provoke plenty of thought and reflection.

The Hope Six Demolition Project was first put out in 2016 and gave rise to singles such as 'The Wheel', and 'The Community Of Hope'. This deluxe reissue comes on 180gsm black vinyl and has plenty of alt, art and folk-rock goodness within from perennial favourite Polly Jean "PJ" Harvey. This reissue of her sixth album features brand new artwork with cover art that is in fact based on a drawing PJ Harvey has done herself. It has been freshly mastered for the occasion by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering and was overseen by frequent and ling time PJ-producer, John Parish.

Review: The world was very different in 1992, but some of the greatest musical moments from that year stand the test of time. Just take Polly Jean Harvey's staggering debut - the making of a musical icon and one of the era's finest examples of songwriting. It still sounds exceptional and its messages still resonate, lifting the woke-washed veil of our age in one fell swoop, laying bare the fact that many toxic attitudes prevail. It's rock music, but that's hardly the point. What matters isn't so much what's being played, but how and what's being said. Delivered with an air of Pixies and nod to Patti Smith, written in the wake of a relationship imploding, our introduction to Harvey remains vital as ever. A refusal to accept simplistic, patriarchal views of womanhood and femininity, or indeed simplistic patriarchal views of anything, the record's razor sharp observations, cunning wit and deft ability to reference but feel original is remarkable.

Review: Over the last 12 months, Polly Jean Harvey has delivered remastered versions of many of her most acclaimed albums, while also releasing collections of demo recordings for each set. The latest to get this treatment is her critically acclaimed set Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Famously, most of the songs focus on love and relationships and were written while Harvey was living in New York City at the tail end of the '90s. As with her other collections of demos, most of the early versions showcased here feature little more than Harvey on guitar and lone or multi-tracked vocals. This raw and stripped-back approach gives new life to some songs, with highlights including the heart-aching 'The Mess We're In' and fuzz-soaked 'This Is Love'.

Review: You can never really understate the impact Polly Jean Harvey had when she landed on the UK music scene, and the radars of tastemakers like John Peel, in the early-1990s. Guitar tracks at the time were usually split into unashamedly lager-soaked upfront Britpop, or nihilistic and self-sabotaging grunge and metal from the US. PJ Harvey was neither, and on 'To Bring You My Love' she perfected a particularly UK take on heavy, darkroom rock.

Pressing play means stepping into a world where the blues can either be a sparse, pitch black tome ('To Bring You My Love') or stomping and sweat-soaked juggernaut ('Meet Ze Monsta'), and that's just referencing the first two songs. Compare either to the trip-hop infused downtempo melancholia of 'The Dancer', and it's pretty clear why this was one of the albums of its decade.

Review: Polly Jean Harvey broke into the common conscious with her unique and individual approach to alternative rock, and she's managed to maintain that aural autonomy throughout a storied career that has simultaneously found favour in the musical mainstream and refused to stray far from the leftfield. A difficult balance to strike, this, her eighth solo studio album, is indicative of that point. There's nothing here not to enjoy, but there's very little here you could predict.

Not least given where it sits in her back catalogue. Production began as the seminal but decidedly hushed White Chalk was released, and this record couldn't be more different from the preceding LP. Doing away with introspect, for the most part anyway, and refocusing attention away from pianos, it's a rousing indie collection that further cements the artist as one of Britain's national treasures.

Review: We've been treated to reissues of everything else from PJ Harvey's spectacular catalogue, so it's only right we get a chance to savour the deeper cuts that shape out the persona of the high priestess of alternative rock. Gathering together an exhaustive 59 B sides, demos and previously unreleased tracks, this six-LP box set takes us into the heart of Polly Jean's writing process, showing the raw power in the songwriting when it's just her voice and an overdriven guitar, and showing us the broader possibilities of songs which didn't make the cut for the studio albums. This is a true treasure of music getting the authoritative release she deserves.

Review: I Inside the Old Year Dying is PJ Harvey's tenth studio long player but a first in some seven years. The last, The Hope Six Demolition Project, was a UK number one on the album charts and this one was again recorded with long-time creative collaborators John Parish and Flood. It is a vast sonic universe that is located "in a space between life's opposites, and between recent history and the ancient past." There is plenty of biblical imagery, Shakespearean references and lots of profound songwriting, as you would expect.

Review: Following a couple of years spent re-releasing many of her classic albums, alongside sets featuring demo versions of the same songs, Polly Jean Harvey is finally ready to release a new album - her first for seven long years. Reunited with long-time collaborators John Parish and Flood, Harvey delivers alluring, at times otherworldly songs - delivered beautifully and with more than a hint of world-weary emotions - backed by sparse, effects-laden instrumentation, metronomic grooves and plenty of pastoral, folk-influenced intent. We've not listened to the lyrics intently enough (yet) to adequately discuss their themes, but in advance Harvey's label promised "biblical images and references to Shakespeare" amongst the introspection and hard-worn commentary.

Review: Polly Jean Harvey is currently midway through an epic reissue series, delivering freshly re-mastered versions of numerous albums across a multitude of formats. The latest set to get a new vinyl pressing is 1993's "Rid of Me", which saw the celebrated singer-songwriter make her major label bow after years spent operating on small indie imprints. Widely considered one of Harvey's finest moments, the set was far more raw and aggressive than her previous work - despite using the same stripped-back line-up of musicians as its predecessor - with producer Steve Albini, famed for his work with the Pixies, conjuring a particularly "psychotic" sound (as its main protagonist has since called the album in interviews).

The follow up to 2019's exceptional Sacramental Death Qualia, sees a further eschewing of their screamo origins in favour of gargantuan, esoteric, depressive opus-like pieces that transcend genre and spectacle in favour of cathartic bombast.

Review: The hugely influential and way ahead of their time crew of spacerock freaks known as Hawkwind see an official release for this 1972 recording of the band in action at Camden's Roundhouse, previously circulating in bootleg form. The show was part of their 'Space Ritual' tour and captures them pretty much at the height of their powers, with Lemmy's bass tones driving on a powerful garage rock grind that did a lot to inspire both metal and punk. The double LP set also showcases their pioneering work with mind bending electronics, and at times, between the heavier rockouts they verge on ambient experimentation. Add some classic tunes like 'Master of the Universe' and 'Silver Machine' and this ends up being quite an all round winner.

Review: A rock n' roll compilation with a twist, 28 Little Bangers From Richard Hawley's Jukebox is a brand new selector's V/A LP from the 1990s Britpop figurehead and former member of the band Longpigs and Pulp. Diving deep into his personal collection here, this album reflects Hawley's absolute dedication to a pastime few may already know him for: slowly amassing a mammoth selection of 7" records in the mode of garage rock and skiffle. Many are instrumentals, flaunting Hawley's ear for a sound that goes beyond just lyricism or theme. With star cuts from the likes of The Timekeepers and Bobby Gentry, certainly do not miss this is if you're the the right kind of British rock obsessive.

Review: Leeds-based duo Hawthonn express their inspiration from Coil in their artist name (a tribute to the late Jhonn Balance) and it doesn't take long listening to their music to hear that indelible mark on their sound. Earth Mirror marks Layla and Phil Legard's second album for the Ba Da Bing! label out of NYC after 2018's Red Goddess (Of This Men Shall Know Nothing). Weaving a compelling mixture of low, murmuring industrial tones and pastoral folk with an occult twist, the duo move through enveloping, atmospheric spaces. At times Layla Legard's voice cuts through the mist, and elsewhere we reside in instrumental pastures, but the mood remains haunting and evocative from start to finish, not to mention masterfully rendered.

He dropped his debut release via Stones Throw in 2008 and since then has put out four more albums and picked up plenty of critical support as well as radio plays across the world. For All Time is his fifth album and one that crosses even more musical boundaries than before with lyrics that explore "the complexities of love and the raw emotions that accompany it." It is dark, brooding, erotic and stylish with hints of 1920's jazz club to it. A great return. .

Review: The latest addition to the catalogue of Swiss label, Second Thoughts, John Haycock's Dorian Portrait is a striking fusion of jazz and ambient. Showcasing Haycock's Kora specialism - the 21 stringed instrument that has its roots in West Africa - this is an impressive debut studio album from the Manchester-based artist. The opening track, 'Mykes', fans out onto a rippling melody where the plucked strings of the Kora melt into the twin tones of Haycock's electronic components, striking an intriguing balance between a sound that feels age old yet resolutely new. Another standout track, 'Dissolution', grows out from a more prominent bassline, like a plant pushing through soil - leaves unfurling, stretching out towards the sun. This is a beautifully reflective album for quiet introspection and shared listening alike.

Review: Ever since Los Angeles noise-rock trio HEALTH provided the score to Rockstar Games' Max Payne 3, both their sonic and career paths have veered down a direction that avid early fans still have trouble reconciling. Shifting from predominantly instrumental, spasmodic chaos to a unique form of laser-focused, industrial metalwave; their 2019 opus Vol 4: Slaves Of Fear newly established them as the ultimate electronic act for metal fans. While lockdown led to the Disco 4 collaborative albums, split into two separate volumes and boasting a remarkably dynamic array of features from the likes of alt hip-hop guru JPEGMAFIA, trap-metal phenom Ghostemane, hyperpop absurdist duo 100 Gecs, industrial overlords Nine Inch Nails and even groove metal legends Lamb Of God, their fifth full-length Rat Wars draws on the insidious influence from these more aggressive collaborators while simultaneously offering some of their most vulnerable, melancholic and fragile material to date. Complete with a Godflesh sample, it's rather fitting when considering HEALTH's attempts to marry such disparate yet equally punishing sonics mirrors Justin Broadrick's forays from decades ago. Grinding, mechanical percussion fuses to ethereal, androgynous vocals all drowned within EBM sickliness, whilst unpacking utterly nihilistic worldviews. Imagine Placebo or The Pet Shop Boys writing an album with Ministry, and you may start to have an idea of the war you're heading into...

Review: LA based industrial trio HEALTH have had quite the curious trajectory from their confrontational noise-rock beginnings, to providing the acclaimed score to Max Payne 3, all the way to redefining themselves as a gritty, synth-metal behemoth on 2019's Vol 4: Slaves Of Fear. Following on from their lockdown-inspired two-part Disco 4 collaborative project which boasted cuts written in tandem with artists ranging from a multitude of differing sonic spheres, such as alternative hip-hop (JPEGMAFIA, Ghostemane) to hyperpop (100 Gecs) and even grindcore (Full Of Hell), their latest endeavour appears to be taking cues from both their more vicious experiments as well as their newfound collaborative ethos. With features from the likes of Godflesh and Willie Adler of Lamb Of God, whilst embracing both their metallic and techno-leaning indulgences simultaneously, Rat Wars promises to distil the myriad of components essential to the sonic makeup of HEALTH into one oppressive, melancholic, hellish, absorbing and vital collection.

Review: The 'Fake Blood' that courses through our veins is bleeding us out from the inside, and HAM are here to let us know. An angst-ridden pop punk opus for the modern era, the band first released Heart Attack Man in 2019, and it now hears a reissue via Triple Crown. Their second album, it's a melodic 11-tracker of highly-strung gut-punches and punky teenage upset, crafted to convey a state of discontent towards society at large. Though the first sounds mired in negativity, the message by the end is heartwarming, encouraging the listener to take baby steps to mitigate negative sources from their lives; leeches, anyone?

Review: The first album from jangle-indie band Heavenly, following a spate of 7" singles in 1990 that hardly broke the charts, yet made a worthy statement of their own. The Oxford five-piece might be considered an early example of the provincial intellectual indie-band idyll; their songs were written by lead songwriter Amelia Fletcher, backed up by the likes of guitarist Peter Momtchilloff and keyboardist Cathy Rogers. The music is a sweet proto-shoegaze dream, uptempo with up-down drums, and with lyrical themes largely centring on dreamy boys.

Review: Le Jardin De Heavenly is one of the four Heavenly albums scheduled for reissue this year by Skep Wax Records. The band have marked that news by reuniting for two special sold-out dates at Bush Hall in London as appetite for their music feels as strong as it did first time round back in the 1990s as the new generation pick up on it via mediums like Tiktok and streaming platforms. This record is packed with melody-laden pop tunes, complex harmonies and plenty of intense drums, guitar flourishes and sharp and loud riffs. Elements of early shoegazae can also be heard next to some dreamier pieces. A real classic.

Review: Given the not-so-subtle reference to seminal 1960 French New Wave movie A Bout De Souffle (Breathless), you could be forgiven for thinking this retrospective compilation was from the Marseille power-metal outfit, Heavenly. It's not, and instead shines a light on the jangly indie pop of Oxfordshire, UK outfit, Heavenly.

Emerging from the ashes of Talulah Gosh, and eventually evolving into Marine Research following the death of Mathew Fletcher in 1996, for the uninitiated, think poetic lyrical delivery with punchy observational lines and stressed but harmonious guitar riffs that envelop the listener, combining to define a sonic space that's somewhere between Trash Kit, Garbage and Hinds, only with a thick sugar coating. Releasing just four albums in their time, what's here is a great insight into their catalogue and a good jumping off point for what happened before, and next.

Review: Skep Wax Records are reissuing all four Heavenly albums over a two-year period and this is the third instalment, following on from Heavenly vs Satan and Le Jardin De Heavenly. Each LP includes relevant single releases as additional tracks, a 7" booklet with lyrics, pictures, and new sleeve notes by the members of the band. The Decline and Fall of Heavenly came in 1994: the album signified a band rapidly expanding its horizons, veering confidently from high speed indie-punk ('Me And My Madness') to cool surf instrumental ('Sacramento') and back again to the sweetest indiepop ('Itchy Chin'). The singles, which include the band's most celebrated tune - 'P.U.N.K Girl' - demonstrate the confidence Heavenly derived from their involvement in the nascent Riot Grrrl scene. All the anger is there, the politics are direct and crystal clear, yet the whole thing is still delivered with the sweetest pop melodies, like being punched and kissed at the same time.
