Shad Shadows - "Walls" (4:03)
M!R!M - "Into The Night" (3:45)
Das Beat - "Glow" (2:35)
Blind Delon - "Loony Voices" (3:07)

Review: Following on from their widely acclaimed album Afraid To Leave, Berlin's beautiful maudlin post-punk outfit Bleib Modern presents a compilation of remixes and reworks by esteemed artists from across darkwave, post-punk, and EBM. From IV Horsemen's club-worthy rendition of 'Bitter Smile' to M!R!M's dreamy synthpop take on 'Into The Night' via Dune Messiah's crooning 'Loony Voices, 2 Afraid 2 Leave: Remixed Reimaged Reloaded Part 2 offers truly diverse interpretations. With contributions from luminaries like The KVB and Blind Delon, it provides a fresh perspective on Bleib Modern's sound and serves as an exciting interlude that showcases the band's versatility and paves the way for future creations

Do The Punk Rock (1:46)
Review: London punk lifer, Mal-One, grew up in the true first wave of UK punk, even having his childhood bike stolen by another local young boy, one Steve Jones (yes, Sex Pistols Steve Jones) at the age of seven in the suburbs of Hammersmith. Now, so many decades on, the debut 12" under the Mal-One moniker arrives with an EP utterly indebted to the retro infatuation with Miss Debbie Harry. The adorning artwork features a homemade collage, while the included poster has been spotted around the city, continuing the artist's street gallery saga. This piece of absurdist, classic pop-punk is worth the price of admission for the title-track's rap verse spieling of Blondie song titles alone. Get involved.

Round The Bend (808 State remix) (6:51)
Round The Bend (808 State instrumental) (5:42)
Review: Graham Massey and Nice Swan Records came together by chance at Glastonbury's legendary Block 9 in 2022. It was that meeting which lead to this coming together of Malady and rave legends 808 State. Round The Bend is indie-dance with big guitars, yearning male vocals and stepping almost drum &bass style rhythm. It then gets reworked by the mask wearing acid house outfit. First they layer in the 303s, speed up the drums and making it into a crashing, powerful workout for electrified dance floors. There is also an instrumental and a bass lead Malady remix.

Review: Master Peace reaches new heights on this thrilling five-track 12". He grew up listening to bands like Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys and The Streets, and combines that with contemporary inspirations to cook up a mix of resonant songwriting and anthemic pop hooks. 'Veronica' from this EP is already a radio hit and 'Groundhog Day' easily slips into the fine UK tradition for belting indie. Nothing here is frilly or excessive, the lyrics are tight and the grooves drive with the wide-eyed 'Kaleidoscope' being a standout amongst these powerful and bold new tunes.

Nice Town (Metronomy remix) (3:01)
Nice Town (Alain Ogue remix) (4:12)
Review: Metronomy mark their signing to Ninja Tune with a new single that comes not long after their Posse EP Volume 1, a collection of tunes all made in collaboration with up-and-coming artists like Biig Piig, Spill Tab, Sorry, Brian Nasty and Folly Group. This one is another collaboration, this time with Pam Amsterdam. 'Nice Town' deals with the lead singer's own battles such as "internal versus the external or, intangible versus the tangible." It is a delightfully snappy dance-pop ditty with great and tight synth sequences, old-school rap vocals and nice broken early electro beats. Metronomy and Alain Ogue add their own remixes to a great label debut.

Halloween (1:49)
Halloween II (2:11)
Review: Logically landing on 31st October, 1981 (well, the year is far less significant than day-month), 'Halloween' was one of horror punk outfit Misfits' early singles, released through Plan 9 Records. Just 5,000 copies were pressed on black 7" vinyl, the most sought-after now are those with a full lyric sheet which was missing from many copies. It's also notable as the first time the group used their logo inspired by genre-specific US movie magazine, Famous Monsters of Filmland.

This would be the last Misfits outing with guitarist Bobby Steele, and reflects just how wild and daring some of their ideas were. Track one, 'Halloween', has cultish, chant-like qualities, but pales into comparison with the longer sequel, 'Halloween II', which features verses in non-standard Latin, just to throw petrol on the whole fire and brimstone feel.

Beggin' (3:08)
Beggin' (instrumental) (3:10)
Review: San Francisco Bay Area soul band Monophonics's 'Beggin' is their own fine cover version of a song originally released by Franki Valli & The Four Seasons. It has been covered and sampled by a number of other acts who have done a fine job of popularising it, but this version by this large and often rotating cast of musicians is one that truly brings something different. It has a retro 60s soul sound in the gauzy guitars, while the rolling drums hit hard with extra texture from further psyched-out guitar lines. An instrumental is included for those who prefer a more direct approach.

Reinvention (feat Zoot Woman) (3:37)
Reinvention (feat Zoot Woman - Alan Dixon remix) (5:45)
Review: By his previously prolific standards, Disco Halal founder Chen Moscovici AKA Moscoman has been rather quiet of late, choosing to release low-key digital singles on his own label. Here he breaks cover and returns to wax after two years away. Title track 'Adventura' is as atmospheric, off-kilter and druggy as you'd expect, with minor-key melodies, trippy electronics, buzzing effects and psychedelic guitar flourishes riding a chugging, arpeggio-driven groove. Over on the flip he joins forces with Zoot Woman on the pleasingly wayward, new wave-goes-indie dance creepiness of 'Reinvention', which rising star Alan Dixon then turns into a sparkling slab of dark nu-disco with added loose-limbed drums.

Review: There are seemingly no limits to the music Emotional Rescue will put out. This time they look back to the post punk scene of Bristol in the early 80s. Mouth was a short-lived outfit that put out just a couple of releases, but each one blazed a trail though leftfield percussive sounds, wave, weird jazz and electronics. Andy Guy and Rob Merrill were the main members with the likes of Nellie Hooper also in the band's orbit. This record is packed with tribal drumming and floating horns, broken dubs and avant-jazz but all with a proudly DIY attitude. It's packed with heady moments and wild steppers that havent aged a bit and still sound future.

Review: This Record Store Day 2019 exclusive finds Mumford and Sons at work in the famous Electric Lady Studios in New York. It was there that they decided to serve up four carefully reimagined versions of tracks from their acclaimed Delta album. Each one shows a different, incredibly tender side. 'Woman' is first with its gentle piano keys and closely mic-ed vocals soothing the soul, while 'Guiding Light' has more upbeat but still lo-fi guitar riffs and 'Wild Heart' is another showcase of the beautifully raw and emotive vocals of lead singer Marcus Oliver Johnston Mumford. 'If I Say' is a rousing, heart swelling closer.

Review: He may be a shoegaze and dream-pop legend, but sometime Ride guitarist and songwriter Andy Bell has spent much of the last few years making ultra-immersive, out-there ambient soundscapes that are as mind-soothing as they are enveloping and, at times, overwhelming. Tidal Love Numbers, his latest album, once again puts his gorgeous, layered guitar playing front and centre, with collaborators Masal (a duo from Essex) providing complimentary harp, synth and drum sounds. They call the resultant four tracks "ambient, astral jazz". That's a fairly apt description, with the four stretched-out tracks sitting somewhere between Bell's own ambient work, the ambient-Americana of Jonny Nash, and the open-minded experiments of 21st century harpists such as Zeena Parkins.

Review: Sam Gendel and Marcella Cytrynowicz invite you into a lo-fi and imitate world on new album Audiobook. It's an experimental mix of knackered rhythms and damaged tale sounds, distant shakers and shards of melody. Each track is a collage, a loose jumble, a sketch book of ideas that is run through with a sense of hope, despite the often muggy and melancholic overtones. Track five, 'IJ', is a cover of 'Deluge' by Wayne Shorter of the sort you have never heard before and the second half goes a little more unhinged and unusual, but remains a fascinating listen.

Review: David Grubbs and Mats Gustafsson were old friends when they wrote this record back in 2002 when it was first released. They met in Chicago and this album was their second collab but it very much subverted expectations with its impactful and windy diverse collisions of free jazz, drone music, country-tinged folk and weird and wonderful digital sounds. Gustafsson is a Swedish sax virtuoso who helped define many of these sounds with his expressive playing style. Fans of illbient, improv, industrial and music concrete will all find something to love on this newly sequenced re-recording of the original album.

Review: The latest addition to Night Dreamer's series, Direct To Disk Sessions, sees Turkish downtempo specialist, Islandman, iconic percussionist and Don Cherry collaborator, Okay Temiz and contemporary saz player Muhlis Berbero?lu joining forces for the very first time. Recorded in just one take, the session captures a one-off melding of the trio's distinct styles. Islandman's signature balearic sound gives new force to Temiz's fiery percussion, reframing Berbero?lu's Anadolu folk influences into a distinctly dance-ready sound. Stand out track 'Fidayda' eases us into the trio's expertly improvised soundworld with an alluring, oscillating saz riff. When Temiz's percussion enters the mix, it arrives with a controlled unpredictability capable of leaving listeners in a trance. While Islandman's production subtly centres the piece, mapping out a pathway from which the organic instrumentation can unfurl. Future-folktronica at its very best

Review: These seven tracks of scuzzy, lo-fi indie are ingrained with the sound of London streets. The trio of musicians behind it - guitarist Barrie Cadogan, bassist Lewis Wharton and drummer Malcolm Catto - draw on all their 25-year plus experiences of working in multiple genres to serve up blues and rock collisions, psyched-out indie trips, gauzy, summer of love sonics and breakbeat and jazz fusions. The tracks were recorded with minimal overdubs making for an expansive and all consuming sound where the driving rhythm sections do the heavy lifting while the swirling sonics up top take things to a higher level. It might be deeper and darker than you'd expect of this band, but what else would you expect of a record made during this most weird of years.

Play This When I'm Gone
Review: American musician Machine Gun Kelly made quite the about turn on his fifth studio album, released in September of 2020. In a grand depart from his usual style, he ditched his rap sound in favour of a guitar-driven pop punk style that is primed for emo teenagers. Famous for his motor mouth flow, Kelly switches it up for big anthemic verses. Most of the songs clock in under three minutes, come with simple but effective three-chord melodies, huge hooks and tender breakdowns that sound like late but natural air to Blink-182.

Review: Six albums in and Madness had firmly established themselves as part of the British pop firmament when they released Mad Not Mad in 1985. It's a divisive album which captures Suggs' Camden Town likely lads in a period of transition as the 80s wore on and musical styles shifted. Moving on from the chirpy ska of their early days they moved into a more polished pop sound which landed them a billing on NME's 'Greatest Albums Of All Time' just weeks after its release. With the singles 'Uncle Sam' and 'Sweetest Girl' nestled amongst some of the bands' most introspective tracks (see 'Mad Not Mad') it's an important part of the Madness legacy, handily repressed on 180 gm wax for your listening pleasure.

It was thought to be a lost recording until it recently showed up and now gets fully revived by Strut. There are strong political links between these countries which no doubt adds weight to this musical link up. It is a great exchange of cultures from parables to laments on child abuse to tunes that fuse reggae, jazz and post-punk with township styles.

It comes backed with a virtual reality film that immerses you further into their music and deals in broody ambient, indie and cinematic atmospheres. This is a brave project but one this band has pulled off with real aplomb as they put aside their tried and tested instruments and guitar-driven signature sounds to cook up music that goes way beyond what came before and is laden in textural synth craft.

'Solidarity' and 'Door To The River' were simultaneous early-noughties left and right brains, channelling completely different ideas in some ways, and the same ideas in others. Now, the compiled album gets a full restoration, and includes two previously unreleased tracks 'Rosebud' and 'Studies In Paralysis'.

Now it makes its debut on wax and remains a bold listen that was devised as a soundtrack to a non-existent exploitation film. It fuses funk, jazz, and Afrobeat influences with plenty of niche cinematic references such as the zombies in Lucio Fulci's horrors and Umberto Lenzi's cannibalistic adventures. The resulting mash up is beguiling to say the least with horror-tinged exotica next to Fela Kuti rhythms and elements of Italian Library music and colourful psychedelia. A boundary pushing work to say the least.

Charting his long and isolated experience of the first COVID lockdowns, this album documents the guitarist's "interior life" away from the spotlight of Modest Mouse, The Smiths or The Cribs. A unique turquoise vinyl houses this promising dark new wave pop bit - its sound preempted by the first part, released last year. In his own words, Marr calls it his "most ambitious solo record".

Review: You arguably won't get a more unique or insightful window into the No New York no wave post-punk scene than with this intrinsic batch of demos. Mars would go on to conjure sounds that meshed and blended all forms of punk, noise and even post-rock, before the terms became so commonplace. These rehearsal tapes/alternative takes are lifted from the art collective's early formative years when they were still learning how to channel their communal influences and aspirations into sonically challenging, rewarding movements. Filled with thick room-noise reverberations, this pressing grants the ideal opportunity to play spectator (or a mere fly on the wall).

Review: Steve Mason is back with a fifth solo studio album and it is another one that finds him tap into new emotional reserves. He manages to subtly fuse themes that are both personal yet political with honest songwriting and vibrant musicianship. This always emotive record uplifts no end with its deeply engaging lyrical motifs. It also features some top guests in the form of Pakistani singer Javed Bashir, British gospel singers Jayando Cole, Keshia Smith, Connie McCall and Adrian Blake and santoor playing from Kaviraj Singh. This version comes on gatefold vinyl with an insert and a download code.

Review: Branko Mataja manages to draw many comparison for his music, even though it is hugely original. Everything from Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western to the electrified belly dance sounds of Omar Khorshid via homemade 90s bedroom psychedelia colour his groves, which are enchanting and mystic. The artist hails from Belgrade, spent World War 2 in a German work camp and after escaping managed to live out his days in North Hollywood. He made his own guitars in the 1970s, which lends this music its charm, and taught himself to play in order to pay homage to his ancestral home of Yugoslavia.

As well as featuring plenty of live takes on his own much-loved gems like 'One Day' and 'King Without A Crown', he also tackles a few tasteful covers that were penned written by his son Laivy, and which they performed in unison. There was also a visual recording of this show made and available to find online, which is well worth doing while you sink into the sounds that came at the end of a 15-stop tour.

Review: Vinyl Lovers presents 'A Hard Road' from John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers. More than a compilation, this album is a complete document of the Bluesbreakers' recordings with Peter Green, of which 'A Hard Road' was just the most prominent part. Bonus tracks include several non-LP singles, among them the 1967 B-side "Rubber Duck," which has never before appeared on LP.

Review: "I'm somewhere between a pop artist and a jam band-maybe closer to pop artist," John Mayer recently told Kerwin Frost in a YouTube interview. Given the fact he makes a sideline as the touring guitarist for the Grateful Dead - a band vying for position as most ironically named given the length of their live history - and his latest record sounds like Sob Rock, in both title and sonics, it's not hard to see why he's come up with that kind of career summation.

It is, of course, purposefully reductive and awkwardly self-deprecating, in a self-conscious kind of way. And that attitude certainly rings true on this record, which despite being pretty grand in terms of scope, scarcely a 'small' track on here, always feels slightly withdrawn. Nevertheless, from the stadium balladry of 'All I Want Is To Be With You', through to the Clapton-esque blues of 'I Guess I Just Feel Like', it's Mayer on real form.

Review: .Straight out of Lincoln Park, Michigan, circa 1963, MC5 are one of those incredible rock & roll bands that people should be talking about more, still to this day. And we really, really do mean rock & roll, a genre in which they rank among the finest bands of all time, falling somewhere between proto-punk, hard rock, garage, blues and heavy bits, helping set the sonic foundations from which outfits such as AC/DC could go on to thrive and, to some extent at least, commercialise. Live In Europe presents nine tracks originally recorded for German and Finnish TV, and it offers both cover versions - which MC5 were renowned for - and originals. For collectors, it's worth noting in particular that 'Let It Rock' and 'Black To Comm' have never been been included on any release from the group, and, like much of what's here, serve as reminders of the incredible connection between the twin axe men, Wayne Kramer and Fred 'Sonic' Smith.

Review: Paul McCartney gets a lot of (arguably unwarranted) stick, but the former Beatle has always been open to trying new things and allowing people to reinterpret his work. It's for this reason that he's allowed an interesting mixture of artists to remix his solo lockdown album, McCartney III. After opening with a pleasingly funk-some, low slung Beck hook-up (the excellent 'Find My Way'), we're treated to a mixture of collaborations (the stellar, laidback and psychedelic 'Pretty Boys' with Khruangbin), new cover versions by hand-picked artists (see the contributions by Dominic Fike and Phoebe Bridgers) and largely impressive remixes. In the latter category, we're particularly enjoying Damon Albarn's woozy, downtempo take on 'Long Tailed Winter Bird' and 3D RDN's 'Temporary Secretary'-esque version of 'Deep Deep Feeling'

Review: McCartney III was the18th solo album by legendary musician and former Beatle Paul McCartney. Imagined is the remix version that came digitally back in April and now lands on vinyl. The artists chosen to remix were all selected by McCartney himself and are said to feature "friends, fans, and brand new acquaintances." The record has picked up plenty of positive reviews already and that should be no surprise given the heavyweights included. The likes of Beck, Khruangbin, Dev Hynes, Ed O'Brien, Damon Albarn, Josh Homme, Anderson .Paak, Robert Del Naja, and Idris Elba all make for a contemporary mix with diverse results.

Review: Manchester's distinctly-un-Manchester sounding opiate guitar troubadour Kevin McCormick released his acclaimed Light Patterns in 1982, then went on to set about putting a few songs onto tape that explored what was possible as a solo six string player (the aforementioned was made with David Horridge). The result is this collection of work which is widely ahead of its time and completely unique.
Moving past the traditional acoustic sound of what had come before, instead the artist turns his attention to this stargazing aesthetics. A place where electronic ambient and gentle, patient guitars combine to offer this far-reaching, almost meditative feeling. A piece of work that has late night intimacy written into its DNA, less structured and more free flowing, and certainly setting precedents for where so many artists have wound up today.

Review: If you've seen the movie Synecdoche, New York, the idea of an artwork taking on a life of its own and eventually consuming the creator will be pretty familiar. Charlie Kaufmann's typically strange triumph is, of course, far from the only film that approaches this kind of subject matter, and in many ways the concept is bound to grow more relevant with the onset of AI creativity. Just who, or what, has made that piece of work? Etcetera etcetera.
Tom Cox is also no stranger to these ends. His debut novel - but 13th book - was published in April 2022. Villager draws on the author's passion for nature, music and folklore in a psychedelic trip through small settlement life, and in the pages we meet RJ McKendree. Now that name has an album, Wallflower, written, produced and developed by Cox, which is every bit the hazy late-60s folk rock masterpiece that never was.

It is a hugely personal record that finds him tapping into an all-new creative language that allows him to dissect his sense of self while also encouraging anyone else to take more confidence in their own identities. There are many gorgeous moments here from the subtle brass and loose grooves of 'Mezzanine' to warming choruses on 'Elevator Hum.' They all make for an album that plots a real narrative journey with elements that are familiar to all along the way.

Review: Hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina, self-described "Adventure Metal" outfit Mega Colossus appear to have little interest in using the metal genre to craft sonic aggression. Utilising melodious leads, powerful vocals and technically impressive flashes of prog brilliance, their fourth full-length Showdown offers up a form of triumphant positivity and anthemic fantasy, harking back to the classic era of illustrious prog and classic rock with subtle nods to the likes of Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Kansas. It might not be 1978 anymore, just don't tell the band that.

Review: Taken from their controversial/iconic debut UK/European show at London's Hammersmith Odeon in 1987, this performance from thrash metal titans Megadeth was famously plagued by misfortune due to the band's gear getting stuck in customs, leading to unfamiliar hired equipment causing the dreaded technical difficulties throughout. Those in attendance that faithful night have since rushed to the band's defence, with the general consensus being no issues could overshadow the sheer ferocity and energetic mayhem exuded by Mr. Dave Mustaine (and his at the time bandmates). Captured whilst promoting their genre staple sophomore effort Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?, the set is packed to the brim with blistering, breakneck paced renditions of some the band's most mammoth, face-melting bangers from 'Wake Up Dead' to 'Peace Sells' with plenty of fan favourite deep cuts like the criminally overlooked 'Devil's Island' making appearances.

Review: Proto-grunge/sludge metal band Melvins laid down six compelling songs on their fourth album. Lice-All was a cohesive, tightly woven trip made up of three original tunes and three fine covers. Two of them were originally written by the man, the legend, Alice Cooper, and one is by nose rock gang Flipper. The record is said to have influenced bands such as Sunn O))) and Sleep over the years because of the way it layer sup heavy, droning guitars. First release back in 1992 and something of a cult classics, this reissue comes on red wax. Back then, the album was known as a set titled LP, but also under the name Lysol.

Silver Town is their fourth studio album and it gave rise to several singles including 'A Place in the Sun' and 'Rain Steam & Speed.' Review: If you've seen Metallica live and in the flesh you'll appreciate how ferocious their shows are. It's not just the music that's loud, all aspects of the performance seems to hit like wrecking ball, raising the volume and intensity on each chord of every riff, drum-packed crescendo, and disorientating outro. And it's always been that way, as this reissued recording from one of their legendary shows proves. Captured in 1994, when the thrash metal pioneers played Woodstock, USA, Justice For All certainly lives up to the name of the outfit's classic 1988 LP, And Justice For All, which earned them their first Grammy nomination. It's pretty powerful, potent stuff, running through a number of the group's strongest tracks in a live context, which goes some way towards transporting us to the gig itself.

Review: Since their early heyday of mammoth pop hits, electronic-indie duo MGMT seemed to sound gradually more and more conflicted, unsure whether to continue producing stadium-scale hooks or follow their eccentricities. It seems, with their fourth full-length 'Little Dark Age', that they've opted for the latter - sounding all the more confident and cohesive for it. 'Little Dark Age' sees the pair channeling their synthetic poppy psychedelia into their darkest, most serious and interesting songwriting yet. Anybody who panned 2013's self-titled album or 2010's 'Congratulations' should be pleasantly surprised by this return to form and new-found resolve. 'Little Dark Age' is a far cry from MGMT's definitive debut, but it's to the band's credit that exploring the more weird and wonderful corners of their pop-sensibilities has worked so well.

Review: Last year, Phil Everum surprisingly relaunched The Microphones, his post-rock vehicle of the late 90s and early-to-mid-2000s, in order to release an album that contained just one 45-minute song. That might sound a bit much, but it was actually rather good all told, with plenty of musical twists and turns and lyrics from Everum that looked back on his life experiences to date. This follow-up is even more surprising. Described as "ambient, but not ambient music", The Foghorn Tape consists entirely of a looped bass tone - created to sound like a classic cliff-top foghorn - drenched in varying amounts of hiss, noise and gritty aural fuzz.
