La Camita (Jacques Renault edit) (3:23)
Son De Tambor Y San Juan (Jacques Renault edit) (3:36)
Review: Mushroom Pillow have tapped up the maverick Jacques Renault here and asked him to tap into a whole new world of influence away from his colourful house fair. It is the rich heritage of Latin underground sounds he leans on most as he threads together his own edits of classics from that world into two steamy new jams. His vibrant rhythms come peppered with mystic flutes and Latin vocals, psyched-out guitars and soulful melodies that make for truly captivating listening. The originals were chosen for their historical significance and cultural impact and have been sympathetically touched up here.

Review: Has it really been 40 years since we saw Bono clad in a black sleeveless tee and brown waistcoat, mullet-topped and leading his band of equally early-80s looking musos to the rooftop of a Dublin building to perform one of their finest songs? Well, based on this limited edition release, the answer is clearly 'yes'.

Originally unveiled in 1971, 'Gloria' is a powerhouse single if ever there was one, and a track that marries melody, message, and the atmosphere U2 are best known for. It's a track that soars over those rooftops, The Edge's riffs acting as wings while Bono cries heartfelt rallying calls atop the lot. Unashamed, unabashed, and unapologetic (check the verse in Latin), now you get four different versions, three from the band in their natural habitat (i.e. live on stage), and the original.

Gotta Get Out (3:02)
Why I Love You (3:51)
Review: The year is 1971 and The Ultimates are a vocal trio who record only two tunes. Lead by Monica Thornton, they reform in 1976 to record another two, and they they vanish. It's hard to know why given the goodness of their only four recordings. They have all become sought after classics that light up Northern Soul parties whiners they get dropped. Here the Brewery Town Beats label reissue the group's first EP having remastered both tunes. 'Gotta Get Out' is the high speed, high impact opening track with smooth backing vocals and the up tempo lead next to tight drum work. 'Why I Love You' slows down to a more sentimental blue eyed soul sound.

Review: Originally conceived in 2019 during a tour with industrial hardcore purveyors Uniform, Japanese psychedelic noise-rock juggernauts Boris would invite their co-conspirators on stage to reimagine the trio's classic "Akuma no Uta" as part of their encore, with the resulting chemistry inspiring both acts to begin crafting a fully collaborative album. Many years of exchanging ideas from one home studio base to another has finally bore fruit in the form of the hideous yet glorious Bright New Disease. Combining almost every nuance of each group's genre-less machinations, the project swells and extends in every sonic direction from harsh walls of screeching noise to retrofitted Japanese D-beat hardcore, with time in between for aquatic, shoegazing serenity and mechanized industrial venom.

Review: U2's latest album finds the iconic rock band re-recording some of their back catalogue songs. The whole record has been produced by The Edge and in all there are 40 tunes coming in companion to famous bespectacled front man Bono's memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, from last year. The record took two years to record during the pandemic and after reviewing demos arrangements were tweaked and in some cases reinterpreted and often redone in a more acoustic setting. Fans have received the album well and it is fair to say there is plenty to like about it.

Review: In many ways it's hard to get a fix on U2's 90s period. It's as though they folded time between their breakthrough 80s albums and the comfortable middle age period post the turn of the millennium. However, Zooropa remains a wildly exciting album which saw Bono and his buddies weren't afraid to mess with the formula and embrace what was happening outside of their mainstream rock bubble. There are some surprising risks taken and yet their gargantuan song craft remains undiminished. On this 30th anniversary pressing there's also some bonus remixes tucked onto side four, bringing Oakenfold's equally supersized Perfecto sound into the mix.

Review: Uchu Nekoko's 2019 album Kimi No Youni Ikiretara is their second album and the first since vocalist Kano joined their roster. Laying thorough claim to a floaty, transparent dream pop sound with a contemporary twist, the now-trio has come a long way since their formation in 2012; despite its release as a free download, the LP's physical edition here is testament to the forward-facing nature of Japan's foremost contemporary indie musicians, whom are able to capitalise on both cloud digitalia and physical desiderata. In addition to this 180 gram heavyweight edition, this encore pressing will include an A4-size clear file folder with the original cover design by Tomoko Oshima.

Review: Lights Out was released in May 1977 and became the group's biggest album to date, reaching number 23 in the US. Michael Schenker's status as the most exciting guitarist in heavy rock was confirmed. The band were rejuvenated with a personnel change as Paul Raymond replaced Danny Peyronel and Leo Lyons, who had produced the band's previous three albums was replaced by Ron Nevison, whose work with Led Zeppelin had impressed and signalled the first in a stellar run of collaborations. An album rich in quality, title track 'Lights Out' offers an urgent portrayal of a dystopian London, dripping with "batons charging... The smell of anarchy". The song was inspired by the same thing that led Joe Strummer to write 'White Riot' for the Clash - the Notting Hill Riots of August 1976. Closing out the record is what Iron Maiden's Steve Harris has called his favourite song of all time, 'Love to Love', arguably the album's crowning achievement.

Review: Legendary first wave punks, UK Subs, really need no introduction at this point. Continuing their A to Z album titling to its natural, admirable conclusion, 'XXIV', served as the band's 24th official project, and has sadly been out of print since its 2013 release. Reissued for the first time on a gatefold double 10", with an accompanying acoustic variation of the entire record, there's never been a better opportunity to appreciate how exceptional the group's latter-day material has continued to be, while also realising that even the most seasoned of punk veterans have a softer side.

Review: Legendary first wave punks, UK Subs, have maintained their relevancy with a willingness to be malleable in the face of constant genre shifts. The incomparable Charlie Harper has weathered the group through line-up changes, new visions of punk as well as simply aging; all of which culminates succinctly on their final studio effort and swan song, 'Reverse Engineering'. A victory lap for weathered heroes, which includes supporting Bad Religion on their upcoming UK run, the subs really owed us nothing but in typical fashion, have decided to go out on their jagged terms. A vital final statement from one of the best, long lasting and seasoned veterans to ever do it.

Review: Thus London-based five some may seem at first to be entranced by the two-chords-good mindset bequeathed to the world by Spacemen 3 and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, yet there's far more to 'The Album Paranoia' than mere heavy-lidded psych attack. There's off-kilter pop suss aplenty, with warped, Barrett-esque melody and eccentric charm in the tradition of Pavement and Sonic Youth, yet a sense of sonic adventure prevails throughout, as dreamstates are warped and guitar monomania gives way to psychedelic experimentation. These ten tracks are fit to expand the horizons of every self-respecting space cadet.

Review: The story of Ultrasonic Grand Prix is one of two vintage 60s guitars and their owners - multi-instrumentalist/producer Shawn Lee and guitar maestro Barrie Cadogan of Nottingham freakbeaters Little Barrie. The music that emerged of their synthesis was weird, startling, and insatiably groovy. With one foot dipped in the organ-warbling garage of 60s psych, and the other vibrating in the mind-expanding fractals of the British acid house boom, Instafuzz plies the earthly quintessences of blues, rock, soul and jazz, against the preternatural discomforts of programmed drums and unhinged synthesisers to produce something distinctly and nostalgically futuristic.

Review: The sixth studio album by British synth pop legends Ultravox landed in 1982, and peaked at an impressive number six in an albums chart that was still highly competitive. By December that year, the record had clocked up more than 100,000 copies, earning a Gold certificate from the BPI, while also ranking in US and German hit lists around the same time. Notable as it saw George Martin (affectionally known to some as The Fifth Beatle) stepping up to the helm, this veteran apparently claimed the band were "the most musical" he'd worked with in years. Agree or not, the record is bold and theatrical, at times taking us out on the town in bleep-happy Sheffield (or some such synth domain), in other moments inviting us to partake in a strange electronic cabaret.

Fairweather Friend is the difficult second album that didn't prove so and brought yet more lush and candied melodies with confident guitar, great vocals and plenty of studio finesse. Not bad for a group that met at San Francisco record emporium Amoeba Music.

Review: The Umlauts like to play by the rules about as much as you enjoy a needle in the eye. A formidable force of opposition against a music industry which has largely been lost to the corporates - big money is indeed coming for culture - the nine-piece coldwave mini-army kick against everything from labels to marketing, and have so far done pretty well by not adhering to those practices. Two EPs deep - U (2021) and Another Fact (2022) - and we land at Slags. Ten tracks that comprise the best of the preceding extended players, and equally captivating new material. From the Neo-Kosmische of 'Um Politik', to the gritty, synth punk of 'Mad Blue Love', the distorted, compressed throb and loops of 'Boiler Suits & Combat Boots', and the knife-edge atmosphere of epic closer 'Another Fact', here's a ride you won't forget in a hurry.

Review: It's something of an anomaly that Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, a now long-serving band inspired late 1960s psychedelia, garage rock and proto-metal, have not previously released a live album - despite a reputation as one of the most incendiary live outfits around. Slaughter On First Avenue sets the record straight, offering a near complete recording of a live performance stretched across two discs. Hazy, mystical and delightfully hallucinatory, it genuinely offers a snapshot of Kevin Starrs' band at the peak of their powers - all effects-laden instrumentation, droning lead vocals, weighty early Black Sabbath style riffs, energetic drums and kaleidoscopic intent. An absolute must for fans of the band and the wider psych-rock sound.

Review: The Undertones hit the big time with their self-titled debut album in 1979. They never expected it to receive the critical acclaim it did, but that came once again a year later with its follow-up, Hypnotised. This one had a slightly more edgy sound and was recorded at Wisseloord Studios in the Netherlands in December 1979. Lyrically the themes continued where the debut left off and touched on teenage angst, boisterousness, and heartbreak but with a more sophisticated sound. The album reached number six in the UK Albums Charts and was thus the highest-charting album of their career.

Review: The New Zealand-born, Portland-based Ruban Nielson initially made a name for himself by marrying psych rock and lo-fi styles in a messy, Beefheartian manner, with jam-band wig-outs vying for attention with expressive songcraft. On 'Multi Love', however, he's both reined in the excesses of yore and sharpened up his songwriting, and the result is a veritable tour de force. Pop-tinged melody and emotional candour make for impressive bedfellows on these nine expansive and inventive ditties, which take as much inspiration from Prince or Janelle Monae as they do The Grateful Dead or Zappa. 'Multi Love' marks the place where Nielson genuinely makes his presence felt as a modern-day psychedelic visionary.

Review: New Zealand psychedelic rock band Unknown Mortal Orchestra received plenty of acclaim for their second album, II, originally released in February 2013. Fusing lo-fi, indie rock, psychedelic sounds and plenty of trippy ideas, it take sin funky as you like guitar jams, drawn out and sun worshipping odes to a higher presence and raw, psyched out soul tracks. Tunes are packed with great detail and manage to strike a balance between light and dark, beauty and hostility. The often inward lyrics add another alluring element to this album, which won Best Alternative Album in the 2013 New Zealand Music Awards.

Review: Logic runs through the Unknown Mortal Orchestra back catalogue, even if that's just in terms of what the records are actually called. V, then, is album number five, a double-sized and long-awaited package that represents the first long form outing from Ruban Nielson and Co since 2018. In modern music, that's a hell of a long time. Rest assured, though, it seems like time was well spent honing crafts, polishing ideas, and coming out with 14 incredibly interesting and compelling songs.

In many ways V isn't a huge departure from IV, but - maybe because of that extended gap - you still can't shake the feeling this is you meeting the Orchestra for the first time. Packed full of surprises, running the gamut between blissed out, stargazing stuff, lo-fi funk steppers, and a kind of stoner pop-blues, it's love at first play. Again.

Review: New Zealand-born, Portland-based Ruban Nielson is well known for mixing up lo-fi, indie rock, psychedelic sounds and plenty of trippiness into unique and beguiling sound worlds. V is said to be the band's most definitive album yet and it was written between the dry freeways of Palm Springs in California and the much more lush coastlines of Hawai'i. As such it is drawn from a world of West Coast AOR, classic hits, weirdo pop and Hawaiian Hapa-haole music. This is the first double album in the artist's discography and it is well worth the extra playtime.

Review: BBC's hit action drama Killing Eve not only introduced the exceptional screen talent of Jodie Comer to a global audience, it also had some damned good tunes each and every season. Unloved were responsible for much of the soundtrack to the relationship between deadly assassin Villanelle and super-determined government agent Eve, which progresses from obsessive woman-hunt to weirdly playful cat and mouse games and finally, something much more personal. Ode to the Lovers collates much of the music delivered by Unloved for this gripping journey played out over four series, resulting in a staggeringly mesmerising collection of sounds that seem to lull, swoon, sway, romance, mystify and, finally, win hearts over. Blissful and beautiful instrumental classical-pop-electronic business, it's certainly worthy of the eye candy these limited run pressings come packaged in.

Review: The Unloved crew is back with a new album Polychrome, and it is made up of eight tunes that were all recorded during the same period as The Pink Album from September last year. The band is known for having cooked up a cinematic sound that joins the dots between moody 60s girl group records to sonic experimenters like the great Delia Derbyshire and Silver Apples via the mystic and shadowy atmospheres of David Lynch and monochromatic charm of the French New Wave. All that and more features here on another beautifully alluring collection.

Review: Given their roots as an all-female band helmed by two sisters, it's not surprising that Northumbrian folk stars the Unthanks have used their platform to deliver numerous albums inspired by, or made in tribute to, creative women. Perhaps the most famous of these is 2017's 'Diversions Volume 4: The Songs and Poems of Molly Drake', which first hit stores in 2017. Now reissued, the album sees them deliver interpretations of poems and songs written by Nick Drake's mother, Molly, whose incredible work only came to light following her death in 1993. It's an inspired and evocative collection all told, with sweet renditions of Drake's songs - laid to tape in typical Unthanks fashion, with the Unthank sisters' harmony vocals accompanied by evocative folk instrumentation - accompanied by acapella readings of some of her thoughtful and emotive poems.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record ever so slightly warped, otherwise in excellent condition***

Washington, D.C. post-hardcore noisemakers Unwound came up in the early 1990s with a DIY ethos and a penchant for making every instrument screech. The 1995 album Unwound was intended as their core statement of intent (not to be confused with their first ever cassette of the same name), finding them inspired divinely by tropes from krautrock and jazz. For a punk band, there are a relatively high number of wide power chords throughout this one, contrasting to the raw, centred and raspy vocals from Justin Trosper. A monumental achievement, filled with pace changes and soul-ripping drops into oblivion.

Review: Through her 'U.S. Girls' project, Toronto-based Meg Remy has released a consistently high quality run of albums that explore issues of femininity with a shaded and angular avant-pop sound. New record 'In A Poem Unlimited' sees Remy continue to explore identity politics, but in a comparatively warmer and more free sound as she collaborates with improvisational group The Cosmic Range. Structurally, the album enjoys an unpredictability of form that sprawls across skulking grunge, found sounds, crunching horn-sections and synth-driven industrial disco. Highlight track 'Incidental Boogie' exemplifies this binding of elements; the contrast of stomping, distorted with Remy's breathy and swaggering vocals is an intoxicating one. The breadth of Remy's palette makes this album an exhilarating listen, and - both as a vocalist and writer - Remy shines as an arresting and formidable talent.

Review: Meghan Remy is one of North America's musical secret weapons. Unless, of course, you already know about her, then she's just a bonafide gem in the crown jewels. Raised in Illinois, but based in Toronto for much of her career, her work as U.S. Girls is born of the post-millennium alt-pop sound, and by that we mean also cast in the shadows of the mainstream that defined much of her childhood. Bless This Mess presents that in all its glory. Some tracks can best be described as yacht pop (see: yacht rock, then work it out), homages to Immaculate Collection-era Madonna are audible, striking beautiful minimalistic balladry is present, and a voice sweeter than a sugar binge just before sitting down to watch, err, something sweet is omnipresent. It's stylised, stylish stuff, and it's difficult not to feel intoxicated by.

Review: The output from cult label Emotional Response is always varied and always vital. This time out the focus turns to Useless Users, who offer up a standout nine-track debut here. The band features former Sarah Records alumni including members of Action Painting! and Secret Shine as well as featuring Even As We Speak. The music they make is pop but with bold adventure at its heart. There are dreamy elements, big bold chords and stunning vocal deliveries as well as a few twists and turns along the way. It's a real gem with nods to sixties psyche amongst others.
