Review: In the posthumous release 94 East featuring Prince, listeners are treated to a glimpse of Prince's early musical journey, showcasing a remarkable talent that was obvious even at the age of seventeen. Collaborating with Pepe Willie and the Minneapolis-based funk group 94 East, Prince's influence on the tracks is unmistakable. The album captures a raw and vibrant energy, reflecting the glam-funk sound that Prince would later make his own. Tracks like Just Another Sucker demonstrate Prince's compositional prowess, while If You Feel Like Dancin and Lovin' Cup offer a taste of his signature blend of soulfulness and melody. Filled with funky grooves and infectious rhythms, the album is a great example to Prince's early genius. Clocking in at just over an hour, it's a danceable journey through Prince's formative years, leaving listeners craving more of his iconic sound.

Review: Abschaum's Quand Viennent Les Serpents seamlessly merges electronic and rock elements while delving into ambient, folk and Krautrock styles. The album's standout feature lies in its ability to blend folk tones and instruments with abrasive dissonant effects, resulting in a fascinating and dramatic folk adventure. Throughout the album, Abschaum crafts a progressive rock aura, showcasing their prowess in blending electronic and rock influences. Each track offers a meditative and experimental journey, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the band's innovative soundscapes. With its intricate arrangements and dynamic compositions, Quand Viennent Les Serpents pushes the boundaries of traditional music genres, offering a fresh and unique listening experience.

Review: Following on from 2021's excellent Too Mean To Die, German proto-speed/thrash metal pioneers Accept return with their highly anticipated 17th full-length Humanoid. Marking their sixth overall LP with former T.T. Quick frontman Mark Tornillo handling vocal duties (who has been with the group since their third reunion in 2009), the material here espouses genuine concerns over the increase of AI in modern technology and its careless displacement of artists from varying fields. Emboldened by frenetic, anthemic riffage and soaring melodious hooks, Accept are back to remind all of their vital influence and put every band who've come since back in their quiet little place atop the band's giant shoulders.

Kicking Air Bricks (12:46)
Multiverse Turtle Reflex (8:50)
Smelling Oneiric Asado (6:52)
Lemurian Tsunami Inside A Hat (12:23)
Review: Volume 3 of the collaboration between Argentine polymaths Reynols and Acid Mothers Temple delivers a highly interesting collaboration that defies categorization. Recorded during AMT's 2017 South American Tour, the album features a unique blend of elements from both groups, yet retains a weightless quality that sets it apart. 'Kicking Air Bricks' on Side-1 exudes a loose Gong-esque vibe, with Satoshima Nani's dynamic drumming adding a new dimension to AMT's sound. 'Multiverse Turtle Reflex' closes the side with a thick drone coda, setting the stage for Side-2's progression. 'Smelling Oneiric Asado' begins gently with Miguel Tomasin's vocals and organ accompaniment, gradually building momentum with layers of guitar interplay anchored by Wolf's bass. The epic 'Lemurian Tsunami Inside A Hat' closes the album with a 13-minute heavy rock journey, as Reynols' guitars and Kawabata's interjections collide in a riff-filled crescendo. This album is definitely one for those looking for something unique and original.

Review: Holy Black Mountain Side by Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. is an exploration of psychedelic rock that pushes boundaries and challenges mainstream tastes. Mastered by Taigen Kawabe of Bo Ningen, who also guests on it, the album delves deep into the band's signature soundscape, incorporating traditional elements into an electrifying sonic journey. Recorded between 2021 and 2023 at Acid Mothers Temple in Japan, the album showcases expert production, engineering and mixing by frontman Kawabata Makoto. From dissonant violin passages to pulsating grooves and free-jazz nuances, each track offers a unique sonic experience that impresses and intrigues listeners. Holy Black Mountain Side stays true to the band's early work while also pushing the boundaries of psychedelic rock and themselves.

Review: 2024 ushers in a brand new Barry Adamson album, Cut To Black, marking an exciting new shift in direction for the utterly singular Nick Cave associate and experimental blues-pop musician. Cut To Black, led by the swaggeringly roomy 'Demon Lover' (perhaps nodding to the great corporate espionage film of the same name, in due keeping with Adamson's love for spy thriller soundtracks, and his incorporation of their sound into his music), the record embraces his trademark genre-hopping proclivity, spanning pop, soul, jazz, hip-hop and gospel. A totally unique LP for the present era, Adamson's latest oeuvre topup is a must-have for fans of all things Cinematic Soul, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Post Punk, Massive Attack, Unloved and more.

Review: Following the breakout success of their acclaimed 2000 sophomore effort Maybe I'll Catch Fire, California gothic pop-punk heroes Alkaline Trio began to outgrow their label Asian Man Records, even being instructed to look for a bigger label-base as the increased demand for physical copies and merch became too much for label head Mike Park to handle. This would eventually lead to the band being courted by Vagrant Records in order to distribute their now commercial and career high point From Here To Infirmary in 2001, which would also serve as their only work with drummer Mike Felumlee before being replaced with punk-drummer extraordinaire Atom Willard for touring purposes. Marking the first sonic shift away from the more angst-riddled chaotic emo-punk of their earlier material, and embracing more melodious and direct compositional song structures, for many, From Here To Infirmary is where Alkaline Trio truly discovered their own musical identity.

Review: Amen Dunes' Death Jokes represents a departure from Damon McMahon's previous work, as he delves into electronic music while critiquing American culture's glorification of violence and coercion. Inspired by his experiences and the societal shifts of recent years, McMahon embraces new artistic avenues, incorporating piano and electronic elements into his music. The album's genesis traces back to McMahon's decision to become a beginner again, immersing himself in piano and electronic music. This newfound experimentation, coupled with a thematic shift towards critiquing societal norms, gives rise to an album that feels both raw and prophetic. Songs like 'Round the World' and 'I Don't Mind' seem to anticipate the pandemic's effects, offering haunting reflections on the world's uncertainties. McMahon's collaborations with musicians like Sam Wilkes, Christoffer Berg, and Kwake Bass add depth to the album's sonic landscape. Death Jokes is a collage of samples, incorporating voices, music, and sounds from various sources, including YouTube and historical recordings. Through these diverse elements, McMahon constructs a narrative that examines America's culture of violence and individualism. Yet amidst the darkness, there are glimpses of hope and forgiveness. Tracks like 'Mary Anne' and 'Purple Land' explore themes of innocence, forgiveness, and the passage of time. The album culminates in gospel-infused songs that mourn societal divisions while yearning for spiritual connection. In its entirety, Death Jokes serves as an essay on the complexities of life and society, offering both critique and introspection. Through his music, McMahon challenges listeners to confront uncomfortable truths while holding onto hope for a better future.

Review: The duo of Angus & Julia Stone share their sixth full-length album, Cape Forestier. A strikingly poignant and textured set of new recordings, the new LP immediately draws listeners into the simple and endearing vision of Angus and Julia Stone's world; this is a cloaked, atmopsheric Aussie folk album that flaunts the couple's talents in utmost equal measure. Cape Forestier is also a self-described exercise in recognising "how humans choose to treat each other, love each other, and make promises to build something beautiful together." By that, they mean marriage: Cape Forestier's ear for sentiment knows few bounds, with stripped-back, bridal-gowned romances like 'The Wedding Song' commanding an adept ear for candid space and finger-plucking nostalgisms.

Review: Anthrax's Sound of White Noise marked a pivotal shift in the band's sound and lineup. Released in 1993 and with new vocalist John Bush, formerly of Armored Saint, Anthrax infused their thrash metal roots with grunge and alternative rock influences. The album, produced by Dave Jerden, features standout tracks like 'Only' and 'Black Lodge,' showcasing a darker, more mature tone. Sound of White Noise received critical acclaim for its innovation and depth, and achieved commercial success by peaking at number seven on the Billboard 200. This album remains a significant entry in Anthrax's discography and one that symbolises their evolution and adaptability in the 90s metal scene.

Review: Hailing from Toronto, Canada, The Anti-Queens are an all-woman riot grrrl pop-punk mob brimming and buzzing with influences from the likes of The Distillers and The Blackhearts, yet with the feral grunge bite of L7. Returning a half-decade on from their 2019 self-titled debut full-length, Disenchanted doubles down like a confident sophomore follow up should, maximising the buzzsaw riffs, snarling vocals and severely pissed off earworm hooks while furthering their sonic mashup of all things fuzzy, grungy, poppy and punky (no, the last three probably aren't real worlds but they are in The Anti-Queens dictionary).

Outsider (4:41)
Never Ending (9:08)
Review: With See The World On Fire,"The Ar-Kaics return after six years with a thrilling new album steeped in dark, moody garage psych. Recorded entirely in singer-guitarist Johnny's bedroom/garage, the album unfolds as a concept piece exploring the very act of making an album, imbuing each track with a raw, visceral energy. Drawing inspiration from the mod-rocking and blues-blustering sounds of the 1960s, the album exudes a vintage charm while firmly rooted in the digital age. From the slow, Link Wray-esque groove of 'Chains' to the Neil Young-inflected blues boogie of 'Cornerstone' and the Seeds-inspired jangle of 'Dawning,' each song pulses with a sense of hopeless drama and ragged romance. Even the longest track, 'Never Ending,' excites with its grooving basslines, hypnotic rhythms, and fiery guitar solos, building to a brilliant psychedelic climax. See The World On Fire is a powerful example of garage rock that engages and impresses.

Review: 'I'm Totally Fine With It Don't Give A Fuck Anymore' reads the WhatsApp message on the front cover of the upcoming album of the same name by Scottish duo Arab Strap. Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton have been on a blazing nonstop run ever since they reunited the group in 2019. Confronting conspiracy theories, online addiction, and societal decay, the lead single 'Bliss' is a steady reminder of Arab Strap's multi-generational appeal - "It's about women being terrorized online; it's about cowardice and bigotry. It's about how we expose ourselves on social platforms while hiding alone at home. But you can dance to it too!" Moffat said on the press release. As the haunting melodies intertwine with Moffat's gritty regional vocals on the 15-track album, dimly lit dive bars and sketchy alleyways come to mind and not the cyberspace dystopia that many other musicians would go to. It's a unique take on a subject that needs unique takes, an explicit piece of sang prose in an age of censorship. Just the cover alone lets you know that Arab Strap is not going to be added to your easy-listening playlist. The icing on the cake? The cheeky decision to make the disc a bright emoji yellow.

Turn Off The Light
Review: Well into their third decade, Arab Strap are angrier and more focused than ever. Where they once penned spoken word kitchen sink dramas backed by swooning indie and lo-fi post-rock- Aidan Moffatt being one of this country's great observers of life at the fringes - the Scottish duo now deal in weighty melancholia, angry social commentary, and the kind of hybrid indie/electronic/hip-hop fusion more associated with Sleaford Mods. They've undoubtedly nailed the latter on their superb new album, charging between raging garage-rock spikiness ('Alottnonceness'), Pet Shop Boys-influenced, synth-driven yearning (the sublime and bittersweet 'Bliss' and 'You're Not There') and electro-fired post-punk fuzziness (the gritty and subtly funky 'Strawberry Moon'). A genuine triumph.
