Review: If the greatest bands evolve over the course of their career, IDLES are clearly on the right track. While the Bristol-band rose to prominence via a raw, noisy and aggressive sound that sat somewhere between post-punk and alt-rock, Tangk - their fifth album and first for three years - represents a genuine (and deliberate) tearing up of their previous trademark sound. Inspired specifically by a desire to "make people dance and make people feel", it feels like a successful attempt to move into the punk-funk/rock-rave territory previously defined by LCD Soundsystem. Review: The Three of Us is a name you might not know even if you are something of a jazz lover. It was the name that jazz keyboardist Hilton Felton - who will be much more well known to those with an ear for rare groove - used for this one groovy soul-jazz album. It arrived in super limited quantities back in 1971 and is now hugely sought after and therefore also rather expensive on the second-hand market. Joining Felton for these sessions were bassist Joe Harris and stickman Johnathan Setell, but it is Hilton's touch that really elevates the music - his free melodies and deep grooves really make their mark. This double disc set rounds up three of the albums that proved most inspirational to electronic musicians. Review: Il Bosco released his first EP back in 2011 on this label and the sounds epitomised the early roots of the Manchester-based label Red Laser. Now he is back with Mega Misses From The Manctalo Diskoteque, a new collection of vintage-sounding Italo-inspired disco games made, it sounds, with an arrangement one authentic vintage gear. Each of these cuts has a compelling rhythm and is embellished with gorgeous melodies and arps that range from dreamy to stiff to seductive. Deadpan vocals make 'Track 2' a real throwback, 'Track 3' has a funky, smooth cruising sound and the rest of the double album plays out with equal elan.

Review: Monyaka has a couple of limited edition, hand-stamped 7"s dropping courtesy of Japan Blues this month. This one is 'Questions Of Life', a forlorn and love-struck wedge of lovers rock with conversational horns doing plenty of great work up top. The earthy rhythms and loose, handgun drums are sprinkled with woodblock hits and yearning vocals from Monyaka who asks where he is going in plaintive fashion. Flip it over for a dubwise rework that slows things down and makes them even more heady and spaced out.

It unearths producers who blend familiar sounds in unfamiliar ways and always bring some leftfield charm to their grooves. Enter Off & Train who here bring plenty of dreamy charm to their deep and scuffed up house opener 'Ewok'. 'Sunday' has lovely innocent melodies unfurling way up over some dusty drum breaks, 'Polestar 2' is a more chunky cut for sweatier moments but still retains a naive melodic air and closer 'Milpool' (Ode To Karl) brings squelchy space-jam vibes to a dreamy house music closer.

Review: Akka & BeepBeep is a new label from the US that is dropping its first two EPs simultaneously on Valentine's Day. Joradesilver is behind one, and also feature sin collaborative mode on this other 12". It opens with 'King David', a hi-tek house sound with soul drenched pads and tightly programmed drums and bass. 'Mango Strut' slows right down to dubbed out house with clattering percussion and the sound of spacecraft, then 'June Buggy' gets funky with more twitchy cosmic synths and a nice organic house groove. 'Callin' Dybbs' is a deep and smoky closer for the backroom with a sublime sax line drifting throughout.

Review: We have been really liking what we've heard from the Dolphin label out if the US of late. Now we get a taster of an upcoming album from Blaque Dynamite with a second single from it. Beka Gochiashvili features on keyboards and synthesizers throughout the cut. The Stefan Ringer remix is a wet and funky mix of jazz, house and experimental sound. It has a sleazy sense of vocal naughtiness to it with shuffling broken beats and rich layers of percussion. The original is an organic and loose-limbed deep house vibe and Ben Hixon brings a little more edgy tech to the drums.

Review: The Dolfin label has been rolling out some high quality jams of late and are currently building up to a much anticipated album from Blaque Dynamite that is worth keeping an eye open for. Now they look to Felix for this hand-stamped vinyl 7" 'Kween In My Eyes'. It is a slow, low slung and heart-warming deep house sound with a hooky beat and jazzy chord draped over the drums as a smooth r&b vocal is smeared into the mix. On the flip is the even more downbeat and late night 'Domelo Ance' with its lazy and heat damaged chords making for a super seductive sound. A steamy 45 then, for sure.

Every bit of lo-fi funk and disco this label deals in comes with a healthy dose of romance and this one from Marshall Titus is another case in point. 'Take A Chance' is full of steamy promise and retro-future 80s synth work over crunchy drums. The vocal is alluring and sensuous and the bassline further pulls you in. On the flip is a more raw and affected alternate version.

This release comes under his new Trackhead T moniker and finds him keeping things raw and stripped back. For the sessions, the Belgian artist limited himself to using only around 12 channels maximum per tune. This Klub Romance EP is the result and a track that harks back to his Berlin stomping ground, with deep but driving house cuts that have subtle hints of everyone from Felix Da Housecat to Boo Williams. The low slung sleaze and muted rave stabs of 'My Miseducation' is our standout.

Review: Funkyjaws Music launches a new edits series here with four absolute dons of the form on one vital 12". It's Lay Far that kicks off with 'Never Ever Edit' which is all horn-led excitement and upbeat disco claps and kicks before Admin's 'Moon Trippin' takes a more slow and soulful approach. When it comes to edits few are more essential than Chicago's Rahaan who kicks off the B-side with 'Gonna Get Ya', a leggy funk number infused with cosmic synth rays and warm piano chords. Delfonic shuts down with the loose percussive jumbles and jazzy vibes of 'Let's Dance The Spank'. A fine start to the series with volume two already in the works.
