Review: For the last decade, Greg Boraman's Freestyle Records has championed the best in contemporary revivalist funk and soul, releasing a string of thrilling records with an authentically fuzzy feel. Here Boraman celebrates the best of contemporary underground soul, pairing familiar fare from the likes of Speedometer, the Haggis Horns and the Killer Meters with a skip load of slept-on fare. There's a great mix of instrumental blasters and breezy vocal cuts (see Nick Van Gelder's slick "Something's Got To Give" and Jo Stance's wonderful "Hey Girl"), with a few deliriously uptempo workouts (Renegades of Jazz, The Mighty Showstoppers) thrown in for good measure.

Review: Having re-invented himself as the UK's favourite funk and soul selector via shows on BBC 6 Music, comedy actor-turned-Corrie cab driver Craig Charles brings his wildly successful Funk & Soul Club brand to CD for the first time. Pitched at newcomers rather than confirmed diggers, it features a mix of well known nu-funk floor fillers (The Apples' version of RATM's "Killing In The Name", Nostalgia 77's ubiquitous White Stripes cover), lesser-known cuts from modern soul 'names' (Speedometer, The Haggis Horns, The Bamboos), older gems (Al Wilson, Incredible Bongo Band), a dash of reggae and a few curveballs (Treva Whateva's long-forgotten banger "Singalong"). Good times guaranteed.

Review: Having dabbled in numerous instruments from a young age - he's tinkled the ivories, blasted the alto sax, banged a few funky beats out on the drums and plucked a few tunes on the guitar - Lack Of Afro certainly isn't lacking in creative stock. This funky young dude has been making music since the age of 7 and now, at 26, Adam Gibbons has all but earned an honorary afro with the release of his debut album, "Press On".

Review: "Let The Groove Move You" picks up where the last left off with 20 more slices of funk made to make you move your butt. As with the first compilation, all of the tracks are written and performed by bands in the modern funk scene: those who are not just re-living but also re-defining the funk sound for a new generation. Once again, the big names are all present: Quantic Soul Orchestra, Breakestra, Poets Of Rhythm, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and The New Mastersounds all doing what they do best, but there are also some relative unknowns and newcomers to the scene who are laying it down just as raw as the rest of them. Just check Melbourne's Cookin' On 3 Burners, Brighton's Natural Self (featuring the amazing vocal talents of Ms Alice Russell: make 3 appearances on this album!!), Glasgow's Boogaloo Investigators, The Soul Snatchers representing The Netherlands and even an Israeli funk outing from The Apples! As well as the above, there are also a number of exclusives: making their appearance on CD for the first time. James Brown's legendary soul sister Marva Whitney comes correct with the amazing "I Am What I Am": amazingly still sounding only 20 years old! Canada's Quartertones drop a sleazy slice of carchase funk: with UK b-boy DJ Format applying the brakes on the remix. You will also find the rarer-than-hens-teeth "Wind Your Clock" by Naomi Davis: only 10 copies of this track exist as it was never commercially released: what a killer!

Review: Conceived by label owner Adrian Gibson and made into reality by The Bamboos' Lance Ferguson, the "Black Feeling" project is all about taking it back to the source - to the music that has inspired, instigated and accompanied many a musical journey over the years. Consisting of members of The Bamboos, Cookin On 3Burners and many more guest musicians, the tracks are presented under pseudonyms to give the impression of an album you would find whilst digging in a Caribbean record shop or American thrift store.

Also Featured on this release is the cream of the crop - hand picked by Freestyle boss and Jazz Cafe luminary Adrian Gibson.

Review: After the excellent "Between The Lines" primer, Copenhagen collective Black Lillies drop their first full length album and it's a revelation. From the opening string strains of "Cannonball", you know this is going to be a real melting pot of sounds and ideas. The samba swing of "Cargo" boasts some intense percussion, while "A Rock In The Rain" is a slow, jazz torch song that defies description. Elsewhere, the woozy trip-hop of "In A Sweet Way" is a highlight as is the closing piano 'n' glitch of "Vinternat".

Review: Diesler's third album, "The Rhythm Station", features eleven brand new songs. Musically, the album builds on the mixing pot of previous releases, but with a stronger emphasis on songwriting. From the sultry vocals of Laura Vane on the opener "Welcome To Hellmouth", to the dancefloor friendly "Carla's Beat" featuring Katie Miller, you can hear a more mature structure and melody to the songwriting. To prove he's just as comfortable knocking out hip hop as he is anything else, "Restless" features Leeds very own Testament (resident MC at the Gilles Peterson WW award-nominated New Bohemia night) blessing the mic with his unique style. Review:  Ever since they recruited powerhouse vocalist 'Mighty" May Johnston for some tracks on second album, Look Out, Watch Out, back in 2011, this raw and retro Aussie soul band have been slowly building up to this, their first proper album with Johnston at the helm. "Come Alive!" certainly does just that, boasting ten effervescent '60s / '70s indebted gems that don't mess about. We've been recently introduced to two tracks here ("Done Me Wrong", "Souls Come Alive") via a teaser single and boy, have they set the tone for this accomplished record by a group at their musical peak. Bravo.

Review: Craig Charles' annual "Funk & Soul Club" compilations are fast becoming as much of a Christmas tradition as turkey, dodgy decorations and ill-advised snogs at office parties. As with its predecessor, this sixth volume does a good job in showcasing the best in modern funk, soul, Afrobeat and heavy Latin jams, with a few stone cold classics thrown in (see the Mighty Ryeders' peerless "Evil Vibrations"). Look out for deep and heavy funk gems from the Bamboos, the New Mastersounds and Lance Ferguson's Rare Groove Spectrum, some suitably smooth fare from Courtney Pine and Omar, a scintillating, salsa-focused cover of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by Scotland's Grupo Magnetico, and a dash of dancefloor goodness from funk breaks scene stalwarts Smoove and Turrell.

Review: Craig Charles' CD round-up of cuts that have done that business at his popular Funk & Soul Club events is becoming something of an annual tradition. This fourth volume in as many years is, predictably, stacked high with high quality fare. While there are plenty of straight-up funk and soul cuts - check The Traffic's killer cover of "White Lines", Brian Auger & The Trinity's 'Black Cat', and John Heartsman & Circles' tasty "Talking About My Baby", for starters - Charles's on-point selection also include nods to jazz-dance, Afro-funk, Latin beats, retro-futurist boogie-soul, and simmering torch songs (a sublime contribution from '80s star Lisa Stansfield).

Review: Thanks to his BBC 6Music show, self-styled "complete package" - comic, actor, radio presenter, DJ and stand-up poet - Craig Charles has become the UK's best-known funk and soul enthusiast. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that his annual Funk & Soul Club compilations are extremely popular. This third collection is every bit as potent as predecessors, featuring as it does a riotous mix of heavy funk, horn-totin' soul revivalism, dancefloor-friendly funk breaks (Skeewiff and Stephen Gray), cheeky brass band workouts (Hot 8 Brass Band's famous cover of "Sexual Healing") and a dash of smooth soul (the effortless Omar). With all bases covered and some killer material, it should be essential listening for all those of a soul and funk persuasion.

Review: African Party, the single album released by 'Ginger' Foloruso Johnson and his African Messengers band, has long been considered something of a hard-to-find classic. Originally released in 1967, the energetic and effervescent set here gets a deserved re-issue on Freestyle. Musically, it's something of a melting pot, sitting somewhere between Afro-Cuban fusion, Afrobeat, funk and jazz-dance - all dense, intense rhythms, spiraling horns, fluttering flute lines and high-octane thrills. Certainly, it's a thoroughly entertaining set, packed full of highlights. These include the sharp sax lines, Afrobeat bass and rolling grooves of "A You Momma", and "Hi Life", whose wild trumpets and saxophones offer the perfect foil for the cacophonous drums.

Review: Self-proclaimed "complete package" Craig Charles (actor, poet, DJ, radio host, stand-up) seems to be enjoying life as Britain's most famous funk and soul fan. Here, he curates a second installment of his Funk & Soul Club compilation series. Predictably, there's plenty to tickle the fancy, from the reggae-soul-house shuffle of Lack of Afro's remix of Hidden Jazz Quartet's "High Heels", and the psychedelic funk madness of The Bongolian's "The Riviera Affair", to the celebratory release of Jessica Lauren Four's "Happiness Train" (featuring a brilliant vocal from old Jocelyn Brown), and a pair of ripsnorting cover versions (Cookin' On Three Burners' fantastic take on Numan's "Cars" and Hot Eight Brass Band's famous remake of the Specials' "Ghost Town").
