Review: It was 1996 when Japanese crate-digger, turntablist and all round badman DJ Muro dropped his first commercial DJ mix; since then, he has released sets at a furious rate, variously turning his hand to hip-hop, funk, soul, soundtracks, boogie, funk-rock, samba, jazz and film soundtracks. Here, he switches focus once more, delivering a beautifully summery mix-up of obscure and little known lover's rock cuts. Whether or not you're a confirmed reggae head or not, there's plenty to enjoy, from the unabashed sweetness of "Hey! Girl" and heavy dub rhythms of "Feel Like Making Love", to the sun-kissed reggae-soul of "My Baby of Magic" and sax-laden cheekiness of "Love Come Down" (yep, an instrumental reggae cover of the Evelyn 'Champagne' King disco classic of the same name).

Review: Last week, we attempted to tot up the number of mix CDs released by celebrated Japanese crate-digger Muro since his emergence in the 1990s. We lost count at 150. What makes this achievement all the more remarkable is Muro's seeming ability to pack each themed release with material he's not used before, and tracks that will be fresh to all but the most obsessive and dusty-fingered record collectors. There's plenty to get excited about on this all-action mix of obscure 7" singles, which variously touches on dirty disco-funk, sumptuous, string-laden disco, curious instrumental jazz-funk, blazing funk, skewed soul and jaunty jazz. As usual, there's no tracklist, meaning you'll still be in the dark about Muro's amazing selections.

Review: Not content with unleashing a brilliant collection of obscure Japanese grooves under his DJ XXXL moniker, dusty-fingered nerd Muro delivers another admirable mix-up jam packed with unfamiliar versions of familiar favourites. As the Un Covered title suggests, the concept is simple: a mix of original versions of tracks later made more famous by cover versions, and lesser known covers of massive hits. Heavy on blistering funk and soul but also touching on jangly 60s pop and beardy foreign language versions of English hits, it's a thrill-a-minute ride that doesn't let up for 70-odd minutes.

Review: Muro seems to have spent the last few years trying to record as many DJ mixes as is humanly possible. Here, he returns to the world of production with a typically kaleidoscopic, sample-heavy collection of cuts based around some of his favourite crate digging finds. It's a formidable collection that leaps between genres like a cat navigating a red-hot metal roof; one minute, you're admiring the loose-limbed disco of "Sound Vintage", the next you're ogling at the AOR-goes-jazz-dance flex of "Final Destination". Along the way, he finds room for deep hip-hop ("Dub Darkness"), old skool electro ("Diggin' Out Jungle"), afro-centric percussion jams, camp Euro-disco ("King Tribe"), loopy disco-funk ("Rodeo Drive") and some hardcore MPC work (J Rocc's brilliant dub of "Jam").

Review: Thanks to its leftfield approach to spiritual jazz and jazz-funk fusion, Black Jazz Records has long been a favourite label of many hip-hop diggers. The label, which ran for six years from 1971 before disappearing into oblivion, spawned a string of now sought-after albums from the likes of Gene Russell, Doug Carn and Calvin Keys. Here, Japan's premier dusty-fingered DJ, Muro, drops his own tribute to the label, mixing together his favourite jams from the back catalogue. Review: Japanese crate digger extraordinaire Muro shows no signs of slowing up. His pursuit of record-hunting perfection seems an endless quest, while his love of knocking together white-hot mixtapes has not waned in recent times. This double-disc excursion sees him go back to his roots, abandoning boogie, disco and jazz in favour of funk, soul and hip-hop breaks. Both mixes are, predictably, hugely enjoyable, with Muro cutting, scratching and mixing his way through a range of little-known gems, familiar favourites and quirky, eccentric selections. There's no tracklist, of course, but that's part of the fun - it wouldn't be a Muro mix without no information on his ocean-deep crate-digging finds.

Review: Japanese DJ/producer Muro has been round the block a few times in the last 42 years, but continues to impress with his impeccable crate digging and DJ skills. Having previously offered up essential disco, hip-hop and soundtrack mixes, here he returns to his first love: funk and jazz. Super Jazz Breaks 2 is in many ways typical of Muro's previous CDs. It features little or no information about the 25 choice cuts mixed up in his tight, floor-friendly style, and there's barely a recognizable break or groove in sight. Musically, it's terrific, surprising and - of course - hugely enjoyable. Crate diggers will love trying to work out the source material; the rest of us can just sit back and enjoy the ride.
