Review: Toronto besties Gremlinz and Jesta have been plotting, scheming and collaborating their entire adult lives - off and on - and releasing together consistently since 2018, but The Lee Garden Historical Preservation Society is their most significant creation to date. An ice cold web of tales and textures that digs deep into drum & bass music's most uncompromising and future-focused aesthetics, over 13 tracks they dig deep into a range of influences - techno ('Andromeda'), jungle ('Destro') and elements of grunge and trip hop on cuts such as 'Vermin' and 'After Dinner Coffee Face' are all in the mix but they forever keep the sonics tight and consistent. Metalheadz through and through.

Review: It's another Headz special! Bristol's finest Utopian, the man like Mako, delivers his debut solo album and it's every bit as deep, detailed and sense-slapping as you'd expect it to be. From the brilliantly brutalist "One Reality" to the rave-melting halftime switching "Flip It" via the bouncy harmonics of "Hoxton Home" and the depth plunge bassline and Subtitles-style rawness of the stripped back arrangement on "Offline", like all Metalheadz albums - and indeed Mako productions - this is a properly considered, thoughtful and detailed body of work. Essential.

Review: The Metalheadz train shows no signs of slowing down despite being well into its third decade. This tasty four tracker comes from the combined creative minds of Zero T and Beta 2 and they come through in style with a modern-day reproduction of the vintage Metalheadz sound we all know and love. Tough drums, sprinkled with plenty of future soul and devastating bass, "Misdemeanour" in particular is prickly yet emotional stuff while "In My Head" brings a dose of joyful soul and "Dead Cert" ends on a more angsty tip.

Review: Metalheadz keep us drip-fed with a steady hit of new albums, this time welcoming back longstanding artist Phase to the label for his next LP 'Shore To Shore'. A 13-track liquid affair, given the Goldie stamp of approval for all its breathy vocal lilts ('Shore To Shore', featuring LaMeduza), curious neuro ('Cloud Contours'), and alarmist, instantly-gratifying weirdness ('Quick Fix'), this one's like a skybound fantasy journey, floating islands and raves galore.

Review: Following his recent slew of slap-abouts on Requisite Music, man like Friske returns to the Metalheadz mothership with 'Supplier'. Four cuts deep, each one charging us into the future with hands off the wheel and no seatbelt on, 'Supplier' sees Friske tapping into his Renegade Hardware roots with uncompromised and unabashed technoid fusion. Highlights include the deep space bass and industrial drums of the title track, the jazzier introspection of 'Street Lights' and the brute force of 'Bad Influence'. Take it higher with 'Supplier'.

Serve No Kings (with Jungle Drummer) (5:24)
Review: This new Formless EP from John Rolodex and Jungle Drummer is anything but. It has sleek and muscular rhythms and precision drum machine gloves that are designed for ultimate dance floor destruction. And isn't that always the way with Metalheadz tunes even now, after so many decades in the game? 'Depth of Field' is the head-snapping opener with its skewed bass and deep space exploration vibe. 'Formless' is then a mad flurry of breaks, flutes and monstrous snares and 'Tentacle' pairs ambient background pads with cruising drum breaks that slot through space. 'Serve No Kings' is a mad drum workout with jazz motifs to die for and sweet tempo mix-ups.

Review: The ingeniously named drum & bass duo Sci-Clone have been going for nearly three decades. Only now do Jason Cambridge (aka. A-Sides) and jazzer Nathan Haines join forces once again to present their debut album, Radio Therapy. Perhaps the album's gestation period can be explained by its home on the most coveted originators of it all, Metalheadz, who must still have plenty of people knocking down their doors. 17 tracks of wild production instinct and a floor-shaking lack of compromise make for an unprecedented space-bound trip, as Cambridge draws on his taste for breaksy atmosses, and Haines on his virtuosic muso's knowhow, to produce a string of new jazzstep originals from '1980 One' to 'The Girl In Blue'. The B-side, meanwhile, celebrates legacy releases from the duo from the 90s, such as 'Whole Half' and 'Point Of Departure'.

Adred & Jamal - "Autofacs" (5:18)
Review: Metalheadz may be in its 26th year of operation, but are still turning out high grade weaponry as innovative as any label out there. The London label's busy schedule continues apace with a blistering new one that finds Adred collaborate with four distinctive talents. First up is Commix with the dense and drilling "Interface 01", while a second effort "Recall" goes deeper and more mysterious. Dave Owen co-pilots on "2 Times", another restless banger with fizzing synths and flurries of drums, and elsewhere solo cut "Amenity" from Adred makes the most intense moment of the whole 2 discs. This is no nonsense stuff from start to finish.

Tek 9 - "Just A Dream" (Stretch & Enjoy remix) (6:17)
Tek 9 - "Doughnuts & Ice Cream" (feat Rufige Kru - Stretch & Enjoy remix) (6:05)
Review: While many of Metalheadz earlier anniversary releases that landed this week are great, this latest three-decade celebrator is an ultra-special rarity. 'Back To School' comprises three sonic celebrations of breakbeat culture, homing in on several artists (The 4 Hero-related Tek 9, Goldie's inaugural project Rufige Kru and Stretch & Enjoy) who helped to define the genre before it even became defined as drum & bass proper. Lower-tempo breaks, orchestral stabs, crude FM wobbles, ragga radio samples, resampled rewinds, and soul vocal shouts all make up this happily retro release.

Doc Scott - "The Unofficial Ghost" (6:14)

Rufige Kru - "Ghosts Of My Life" (6:08)
Review: Some of Metalheadz' selective '25 Years Of' anniversary editions have arrived in our mitts, shining a light on some of the best, earliest, and most characteristic drum & bass works by the label's many favourites. On part 9 here, select cuts by Doc Scott and Goldie's own Rufige Kru lay down a twin theme cleanliness and dirtiness respectively, both united by the theme of ghosts. Scott helms up the A with scratchy breaks and a wide void of headroom, emphasising punchiness above all with 'Ghost 25' and its unofficial version. Rufige's two bits, on the B, get much gritter with it - the wendigoes to Scott's banshees.

Review: After several years of real jugular-directed underground scuds, Survival & Script finally reveal the whole Scar picture with their debut album Orkyd. Stretching from velvet vocals to out-of-this-world drum textures (sometimes within one tune), the duo have created a collection that really explores the contrast and shades between subgenres in a style of its own. Like the foggy harmonica blues wrapping over the classic Headz wasp bass and thundering cymbals on "Omnipresent", the gritty top bass but juicy funk on "Renegade Kicks" or the rampant sci-fi thrust of "For A While"... Few D&B albums hold down such a widescreen view with such sharp focus. Contender for drum & bass album of the year right here.

Review: It would be fair to say that excitement has been building since Goldie announced the release of The Journey Man earlier this year. You see, the expansive, triple-vinyl full-length is the Metalheadz man's first album since 1998's patchy Saturnz Return, and is being trumpeted by those who've heard it in full as a triumphant return to form. It naturally features some sweeping, classical instrumentation, but there's nothing as self indulgent as the hour-long "Mother". Furthermore, Goldie has wisely delivered a set of high quality drum and bass that ticks numerous boxes - dancefloor darkness, jungle revivalism, liquid funk warmth - with a string of suitably impressive collaborators (Ulterior Motive, Swindle, Jose James, Natalie Williams, Terri Walker) swinging by to ensure the set oozes soul.
