  4. TT - "Dub Inside" (Robot84 Balearic Re Work) (7:56)
Review: The Robot84 team of Andy Williams and Scott Ferguson have already struck gold on a number of occasions with their cool and deadly disco edits, and they're at it once again with this scene-approved dose of peak time party fuel. "V's King Supreme" is a cheeky, feel-good disco house burner with all the funk poured in and the campness bursting out like a glitter fountain. "V's Miss Siam" is a fierce Italo thumper with a pulsing arpeggio and spine-tingling synth licks on top. "Automatic (Remix)" is a smart and snappy slice of electronic disco while the "Balearic Re-Work" of TT's "Dub Inside" smooths things out with an early 90s flavoured baggy roller par excellence.

  2. Mike Clay - "Que Sera" (feat Sara Diamond) (2:18)
  3. Slick Walk - "The Devil's Lick" (1:40)
Review: On April 6 2020, DJ Oonops will notch up his 100th show on Brooklyn Radio. To celebrate, the popular NYC DJ has partnered with Austria's Agogo records to deliver this celebratory 7" featuring three previously unreleased tracks. Side A boasts King Most's "Jazzy As Fogg", a fine chunk of instrumental hip-hop goodness rich in jazzy and life-affirming samples that reminded us a little of the kind of head-nodding dancefloor fare once released by Manchester's Grand Central Records. Side B begins with a superb neo-soul/R&B riff on classic song "Que Sera" from Canadians Mike Clay and Sara Diamond, before German DJs Stefan "Merse" Ulrich and DJ Robert Smith join forces as Slick Walk on the short, scratch happy, Fingathing style workout "The Devil's Lick".

  1. Lupita (3:36)
  2. Lupita (Bosq rework) (4:24)
Review: Those who love classic Afro-Latin music should already know "Lupita", one of the standout tunes from the sole 1971 album by Belgian composer Nico Gomez (real name Joseph van het Groenewoud) and his Afro-Percussion Inc backing band. That album was reissued a few years back by Mr Bongo; here 'Lupita' is given a rare airing on 7" single by Matasuna. This time round, the deliciously percussive mambo workout - all punchy horns, wild organs and vocal breakdowns - comes backed by a fresh remix courtesy of Bosq. This version is arguably even better, with Bosq wisely choosing to focus on the drums, horns, bass and organs for added dancefloor pleasure.

  1. Atlas (7:24)
Review: Belfast boys Bicep have been surprisingly quiet of late, with this single-sided salvo marking their first new music since 2018. Apparently inspired by their globe-trotting DJ experiences of the past couple of years, the track is as vibrant, colourful and emotive as you'd expect, with the Northern Irish duo layering glistening, ear-catching synthesizer lead lines, drifting vocal samples, sunrise-ready pads and tweaked electronics atop a loose-limbed, breakbeat-influenced rhythm and rumbling bass. It's perhaps not as in-your-face as some of their releases, but it certainly boasts great dancefloor weight, as well as a blend of musical elements that tends towards the loved-up and glassy-eyed.

  1. Zwango Zop (Artwork edit) (10:52)
Review: Like many Australian artists, Melbourne's Mildlife are keen to raise money for the Bushfire Relief Fund. To do that, they've decided to offer up this surprise Artwork re-edit of 2018 album track "Zwango Zop" and donate all sales revenue to the appeal. While the band's original version is a deep and groovy chunk of spaced-out disco, Artwork's version is a far more forthright, peak-time ready affair. He's beefed up the beats a little, pitched up the band's fine instrumentation and added some densely layered new synth sounds of his own. The result is an intergalactic disco workout straight from the top drawer that could well become one of the underground hits of the summer.

  4. Derek Carr - "The Gap" (6:22)
Review: 20/20 Vision have firmly gaffa taped their flag to the electro antennae with "Exit Planet Earth", a new compilation series celebrating veterans and newcomers in the business of tweaked out machine funk. The Hacker is up first with "Positif/Negatif", a rubbery, FX-laden workout with plenty of uneasy space around the core rhythm section. 214 follows up with the decidedly creepy, sound design-embellished "Testy Robot". On the flip Reedale Rise brings something a bit livelier with the plush synth flex pinging through "Lux". Derek Carr completes the set with "The Gap", a lush slice of melancholic machine dreaming for mellower moments.

  1. Put You Back Into It (6:45)
  2. Put You Back Into It (Quentin Harris remix) (8:17)
Review: Second time around for Peven Everett's "Put Your Back Into It", which has become an in-demand record since it first hit stores 10 years ago. This official reissue replicates the track listing of the original pressing. Everett's original version is an undulating, soft-spun deep house delight, with the producer adding his own superb, soul-soaked versions to a backing track rich in shuffling, floor-friendly drums, warm bass and jazzy keys. On the flipside, remixer Quentin Harris gives the track a little more bass-heavy bump, employing slightly heavier drums and some rich chords, whist making more of Everett's impeccable Fender Rhodes work.

  2. Let Go (feat Francesco Fratini - Reekee Trumpet mix) (7:41)
  3. Let Go (Reekee alternate version) (6:20)
Review: For the latest missive on his on-point Wrong Notes label, boss man Reekee has temped Angela Tarrant AKA Angel-A back to the label following her fine lead vocal on Vick Lavender's 2019 gem "Cosmic Love". "Let Go" is an effortlessly soulful number, with Kai Alce's incredible A-side version, which features some additional synth solos and keys by regular collaborator Chris Irvine, delivering the kind of deep, seductive and rolling workout that should appeal to DJs and dancers beyond the soulful house scene. Reekee takes over on the flip, firstly offering up a jazz-funk-fired broken beat "Trumpet Mix" (it includes some fine trumpet solos from pal Francesco Fratini) before delivering a deep, spacey and woozy deep house take (the "Alternate Version").

Mixed by the legendary Florida born and NYC dwelling mixer and DJ extraordinaire Jim Burgess, this one straddles that gorgeous line of being a bit Rock (Neil Young wrote the track) and totally Disco in all the right ways. A truly sweet slice of music here backed with a nice cover of Sam Cooke's classic standard 'You send me'.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: a first three-way collaboration between Young Echo collective members Rider Shafique, Ishan Sound and Kahn on consistently good Portland label ZamZam Sounds. "When Shall We Rise" is little less than a modern dancefloor dub masterpiece: a fine chunk of fusion in which Middle Eastern instrumentation and pro-working class/anti-elite vocals rise above a pitched down, steppers style riddim, echoing keyboard riffs and a booming digital bassline. Flipside "When Shall We Dub" is, if anything, even better, with exotic instrumentation echoing into the distance while a beefed-up version of the killer riddim rumbles away below.

Review: For Those That Knoe kick off a new series of DJ-oriented heaters dug out of forgotten corners of the dance music sprawl, and the first installment finds label head Ben Boe doing the digging. He's picked out two absolute gems you may well have not heard before - Paul Rayner's Slaves Incorporated track "Baby" and Tom Gillieron's "The Fire". Review: Blazing out of the blocks with a sound fully charged for the breakbeat revival, Yosh inaugurates Vivid with this appropriately vibrant set of UK bass music belters. Taking the best elements from jungle, garage and more, lead track "It's Over" bursts forth in a cascade of rolling drums before the moody sub bass stylings of "We Rewind" takes over. Things get a little more aquatic on crafty tripper "Slow Down", and then the drums come right to the forefront of the mix on crisp and deadly EP closer "Pick Up Roll On." With impeccable production values and a liberal dose of UK rudeness, this is an essential fresh grip for anyone wanting some fresh jungle derivatives in their lives.

He's since delivered a debut album to Growing Bin and released as Earth Trax on Rhythm Section and others. The mood across this collection of pieces produced for Polish studio TVP Culture opens up a rich seam of inspiration around the ambient end of Kruczynski's work through short pieces rich in sonorous delights. From fluttering fourth world-isms to hazy dub soundscapes, this is pure listening pleasure from start to finish.

Review: Earlier in the year, Yves Tumor announced the release of this album by releasing 'Gospel For a New Country', a low-slung chunk of post-punk pop brilliance that mixed weighty grooves and emotive vocals with flash-fried guitar riffs amd sampled big band horns. Fittingly, it's this fine track that kicks off 'Heaven To A Tortured Mind', a notably fuzzy, live-sounding set that continues his evolution from quirky electronica maker to alt-rock artist. While there are some electronic sounds dotted across the set, for the most part it's funk-rock riffs, ESG style basslines, organic drums and his own heartfelt vocals that dominate. It could win him many new fans; certainly, it's a very good album.

Review: Although Nightmares On Wax's debut album "A Word of Science" (1991) had its moments, the blend of bass-heavy Bleep techno and hip-hop influenced workouts was arguably a little skewed. It was 1995's "Smokers Delight" that introduced us to what would now be considered the trademark George 'E.A.S.E' Evelyn sound - a weed-stained blend of dub, soul, hip-hop and sun-kissed positivity that endures to this day. As this limited edition 25th Anniversary pressing proves, it remains a great album that's lasted the test of time remarkably well. This time round there's more luxurious packaging, coloured records (one red, one green) and a download card that allows access to four previously unreleased cuts. Grab a copy, light up and enjoy!

  2. Never (3:59)
Review: As you'd expect, the latest single from Daptone stalwarts and high-grade rhythm & blues/early soul revivalists James Hunter Six is something of a doozy. The British band are in fine form on "Brother Or Other", a mid-tempo, turn-of-the-1960s style soul workout in which the soulful lead vocal and group harmony backing vocals rise above hazy horns and a laidback (but still impactful) groove. B-side "Never" is a smooch-tastic slow jam of the kind that's used to set hearts-a-fluttering at the end of dance sessions circa 1960. We prefer the more up-beat A-side, but as with the rest of the band's output it's perfectly pitched, performed and produced.

Review: In 2018, Nils Frahm initiated the "Encores" series: a trilogy of EPs exploring different aspects of his musical world. Here, those sets get gathered together on vinyl for the very first time. Listened to in sequence, it sees the Berlin-based pianist and composer offer up solo acoustic pieces for piano and harmonium (tracks 1 to 5), before layering up piano, processed field recordings and complimentary instrumentation on a suite of sublime ambient tracks (6 to 9). The final section of the album - originally "Encores 3" - sees him flip the script entirely, working almost exclusively with a combination of modular and analogue synthesizers and electronically processed voices. That the collection hangs together as a coherent album despite these stylistic shifts is testament to Frahm's abilities both as a performer and producer.

Review: We're not quite sure what "Purplewave" is, though by the sounds of this EP from electro and techno veteran Rico Casazza it's something we like. The title track, which kicks of the EP in style, is a curious but inspired blend of electro rhythms played on live drums, 1980s alt-rock guitar solos, druggy Italo-disco/new wave style arpeggio bass and alien-sounding electronic melodies. On side B it gets the remix treatment, with Silicon Scally (AKA British electro stalwart Carl Finlow) re-inventing it as a shimmering slice of deep space electro and No Moon offering up a trippy, chugging and dreamy version for late nights and early mornings. Elsewhere on the EP, Casazza delves in to dark electro waters on "Rainmaker" and adds acid to his guitar-flecked template on "Enada Mello".

Here the slow disco classic gets the re-edit treatment courtesy of Japanese DJ/producer Diguma (aka MURO ) on a tidy 7" single. First up on side A is the "Club Edit", a multi-track revision (we think) that cannily layers Gardner's vocals and the key synth parts over the original version's killer groove. The Eggs continue to beguile, mystify, entertain and impress in equal measure, and have been unveiling some truly captivating singles - complete with equally captivating sleeve design - in the run up to this grand unveiling, whetting appetites no end. So here it is, then, the promise and the proof. "Disco With A Feeling" contains some of those picks, alongside other obscure favourites from Haffner's sizable record collection. It's absolute fire from start to finish, with the little known private press and small-run cuts tending towards the more soulful and jazz-funk influenced end of the disco spectrum. Basically, it's a must-have for anyone who gravitates towards the rare end of the disco spectrum.

Review: Defected's disco-minded Glitterbox offshoot has decided to dip a toe into the choppy waters (sorry) of the re-edit scene. The man at the control is fun-time rework specialist Dr Packer, an Australian scalpel specialist who has spent the last few years contributing tidy edits to a variety of well-regarded labels. First, he adds a little late '80s house shuffle to a soul-fired, boogie-era disco classic, before turning the equally familiar "Still in Love" into a bouncy, club-ready chunk of disco-house full of swirling strings and Chic-style guitars. On the flip the good doctor gets his hands a much-sampled electrofunk workout, retaining the drum delays while adding a touch of nu-disco swagger, before brilliantly dubbing out and tooling up the synth-heavy swagger of 1985 hit "I'll Be Good".

Review: Almost a quarter century into his recording career, Mousse T has not lost his ability to create party-starting anthems, even if he's consciously moved away from the heavily compressed, filter-happy disco-house sound of old. "Rock The Mic" - his first release for Defected's revivalist disco offshoot Glitterbox - sounds like an anthem in the making; a cheery disco beast built around live-sounding drums, simmering strings and Plantlife style, P-funk-inspired hip-house vocals. The accompanying remixes come from dusty-fingered crate digger turned disco don Kon. As well as a warm "Remix" rich in warm electric piano riffs and authentic disco instrumentation, the Brooklyn producer also serves up a fine Instrumental take and a handy Acapella.

Review: When he originally released "The North Bend" in 2010, Rafael Anton Irisarri was not the celebrated ambient artist, sound designer and mastering engineer he is today. In hindsight, it was probably his breakthrough album: a release that rightly received rave reviews and introduced him to a wider audience. Listening to this anniversary reissue, which reprises the original track list, it's easy to see why it landed so well. Musically, it blends melancholic and poignant, neo-classical style musical movements with dense layers of white noise and drone style sound design, resulting in a sequence of slowly unfurling tracks that sound brilliant first time around, but also reveal more intricate details once you've listened a few times.

Review: Back in 2018, Gianluca Bertasi re-launched the TeslaSonic project he'd started with Valerio Lombardozzi in 2008 as a solo venture. This outing on Rotterdam imprint BAR Records is his third release since - an expansive six-track mini album that takes the electro template in a number of different directions. So while opener "Magnifying Transmitter" is a funk fuelled affair guaranteed to get you body-popping, "Neuralink" is a deeper affair full of picturesque synthesiser melodies and "Hydrex Returns" an alien-sounding slow jam that bubbles away at a seriously druggy tempo. Elsewhere, "Hydrex Acid" brilliantly re-invents that tune as an ultra-slow TB-303 workout, "Positronic Brain" is a deliciously wide-eyed IDM cut and the Animalistic Beliefs remix of "Magnifying Transmitter" is a Drexciya-style delight.

Review: Many happy returns to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International label, which this month notches up five years in the game. To celebrate, he's releasing a celebratory compilation and two sampler EPs. This first 12" begins with some inspired broken beat/Nu Groove style deep house fusion from the ever-impressive Yu Su, before moving through ghostly techno (the fizzing beats and yearning chords of Katerina's "Bird People") and manic, metallic and industrial-tinged dancefloor madness courtesy of Lock Eyes ("Inner Conspiracy"). Valesuchi offers up the dense industrial/tribal fusion of "30" - all heavy Test Department beats and woozy electronic noises, while "Dawit" invites us to the glassy eyed, futurist deep house paradise that is "Level 7".

Review: Having set our world alight with his third Ilian Tape 12", 2012, back in the spring, Munich man Skee Mask delivers another essential collection of loose-limbed, broken techno workouts. Typically, he's on point from the word go, enveloping swinging, off-kilter techno breakbeats with swirling chords and cascading melodies on brilliant opener "Inti". His love of African-influenced polyrhythms is explored further on the ghostly, percussion-rich club cut "Kappelberg Chant" (which, incidentally, makes great use of choral chants), while "Routine" is a warm, loved-up and evocative tribute to rave-era British breakbeat-house. His debt to British dance music's formative years also comes to the fore on killer proto-jungle jam "Skreet Lvl Dub".

Review: Krystal Davis is perhaps not one of the disco and boogie era's better-known vocalists. She acted as a backing singer for a number of bands, Dazzle being the best known, and released just three singles. Of these, it's 1985 debut "So Smooth" - a loose, soulful and summery, Freestyle-era boogie jam - that's the most sought-after. This brand new Glitterbox edition partners the original vocal and instrumental versions with two brand new remixes. KON leads the charge with a rolling version that feels more energetic and peak-time friendly, largely as a result of more emphasis on the killer bassline and some house-friendly new beats. On the flip, Yam Who highlights the track's inherent breeziness, pushing the fluttering synth motifs to the fore while also adding a thrillingly dreamy new intro.

  6. The Beach (4:28)
Review: Ilian Tape welcomes a new artist to the roster here, as Zeki 808 offers up an EP that defies easy categorization. Check first opener "Present", where ghostly techno chords and bubbly electro style melodies ride stuttering sub-bass and elastic post-dubstep beats, before admiring the even more prominent analogue bass and echoing drum hits of "Hole Flow". "Mersh" is a full-throttle number built around military-strength Belgian "hoover bass" and skittish beats, while "Live Wire" looks to Grime and mangled 21st century digi-dub for inspiration. To round things off, "White Label" brings the ruffneck breakbeat heat while dubstep number "The Beach" takes deep sub-bass and Sheffield style bleep noises to epic new levels. Impressive stuff all told.

Originally released on his own short lived New Age House Records, these timeless jams fetch high prices on the secondhand market, but Welcome To Our New Age House includes the best of those two releases, remastered from the original ADATs for the sixth release on Ari Goldman's World Building imprint. Review: Here's something to warm the cockles of even the stoniest of hearts: an impressively percussive, Mbalax-influenced take on Detroit style deep house from Julion De Angelo and recent Workshop artist Viola Klein. De Angelo handles side A, delivering two tracks that flit woozy male vocal samples, twinkling piano motifs and dusty, ultra-deep musical flourishes with drums that sit somewhere between African tribal workouts and Moodymann style MPC-driven house beats. Viola Klein's flipside suite of tracks is, if anything, even more percussive, with the dense drums and hazy chords of "We (Part One)" being followed by the ghetto-tech influenced high-tempo beats, hand percussion and fluid piano of WhoDat collaboration "We (Part Two)" and the Sabar drums and ambient chords of hectic closing cut "We (Part Another Part)".

Review: Skee Mask, who only recently was found out to be called Bryan Muller, comes through with his second LP to date, making a wonderful follow-up to 2016's Shred. Compro is, ironically, comprised of a much more explorative palette of sounds, with many corners of the album veering off into otherworldly ambient, often through a striking new-age sensibility. The most impressive element of this album is its flow and evolution across its 12 tracks, sounding a lot more like one single-minded thought rather than a collection of disparate dance-not-dance tunes. The quality of the recording is noticeable, too, with tracks like "Rev8617" or "Via Sub Mids" sounding professional, both in vision and style. Through an intricate collage of breaks, samples, polyphonies, and subtle electronic manipulations, Skee Mask has truly mastered his own art, and is giving a new direction to the wider 'UK rave' sound. BIG.
