Review: If you had to make a list of the top 10 Paradise Garage classics, Taana Gardner's pitched-down, Larry Levan-mixed "Heartbeat" would come somewhere near the top of the list. Here the slow disco classic gets the re-edit treatment courtesy of Japanese DJ/producer Diguma (aka MURO ) on a tidy 7" single. First up on side A is the "Club Edit", a multi-track revision (we think) that cannily layers Gardner's vocals and the key synth parts over the original version's killer groove. The flipside "Party Edit" strips back the vocal to just a few key phrases, focusing instead on showcasing various instrument solos buried in Levan's epic original mix.Very limited and likely Juno is one of the few stores outside of Japan to stock this 45

Review: Dug out from the hidden corners of Austria's music scene, Prinz & Prinz released just one track back in 1984 on the Youngsters Of Vienna Vol. 2 compilation. Now Editions Hawara have rescued that tune, 'Einsamkeit' and backed it up with a previously unreleased jam called 'Kleine Segelschiffe' which is a truly exciting find for anyone who appreciates early 80s private press grooves. Synths? Check. Dub FX? Check. DIY pop vocals? You betcha. If you love obscurities from behind the closed doors of bygone eras, you're going to be all over this record.

Review: According to their website, Too Slow To Disco Edits' latest recruits, the Flying Mojito Brothers, are "two country-disco mescoleros pioneering the great electronic wilderness". The two reworks showcased on this rather charming red ten-inch are in some ways fully in-keeping with the more disco-fied end of their output, and a touch faster and more peak-time ready than some of Too Slow To Disco's output. The standout is undoubtedly A-side 'Good Feeling', a rolling and steadily building affair that stretches out a rubbery bassline propelled, soul-flecked disco groove before introducing the vocals and wider instrumentation from their (rather good) source material. Turn to the flip for 'Fadin' West', a sunset-ready revision of an AOR disco/swamp funk fave that chugs along at an attractively low tempo.

Review: Modern Talking is the German pair consisting of Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen who were rather prolific back in the 80s and beyond. There has been a revived interest in their music of late and for that reason much of it is being reissued, including this new, limited edition and nice heavyweight 12" edition of 'Give Me Peace On Earth.' It's a three track disco odyssey that starts with the sentimental and syrupy sweet vocals of the title track, which is doused in loved up 80s chords. 'Stranded In The Middle Of Nowhere' is just as devastatingly heart broken with its slow, crashing drums and yearning vocals then bonus cut 'Sweet Little Sheila' picks up the pace for a lively dance floor disco workout.

Review: Hugely successful German disco duo Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen are Modern Talking, and they made lots of sentimental as well dance floor-ready disco sounds back in the 80s. Much of it is being reissued by the behemoth that is Music On Vinyl and next is a limited edition marble red and blue vinyl version of this three-track 12". There is a campness to this which fans of the likes of Erasure are sure to enjoy - 'Jet Airliner# (Fasten Seat Belt mix) has big 80s drum sounds and glistening synths while the vocals drown in reverb. The instrumental is a little more clean though the drums and arps still make for a big impact and the radio version is also included to close.

It's an alias for writers, composers, producers and vocalists Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen and they put out a busy run of music back in the 80s that is reconnecting today with modern audiences. As such much of it is being made available again thanks to the Music On Vinyl label, and on various different coloured slabs of wax, no less. 'Lonely Tears In Chinatown' has all the playful pomp and campness of a Eurovision song winner with its big synth stabs and cold drum machine grooves. 'Give Me Peace On Earth' is an over-the-top ballad that drowns you in more 80s nostalgia.

Review: The latest edition to the illustrious Charly catalogue - a re-release of Dillinger's most successful single from 1976, 'Cokane In My Brain' - marks a welcome return of this popular release to record stores. Listening to this release, it's easy to trace the figures the Kingston-born Dillinger has labelled as key inspirations in the sound he brings into existence - namely Dennis Alcapone and Lee "Scratch" Perry, the latter of whom he found himself under the guidance of following his big break in 1974 with the release of his single 'Dub Organizer'. Review: There was naturally a lot of excitement when James Murphy and company dropped 'New Body Rhumba' digitally in the summer of 2022. The track, which is the New York punk-funk outfit's first new music for over five years, was written and recorded for the soundtrack of hyped movie 'White Noise'. The track finally coming to vinyl is great news, not least because it feels like 'prime' LCD Soundsystem from the period in the early-to-mid 2000s when Murphy and his regular collaborators could do no wrong. All the familiar elements are present and correct - think crunchy, fuzzy punk guitar licks, funky no-wave drums, cowbells, vintage electronics and lead vocals from Murphy whose lyrics offer a weary analysis of 21st century life. In a word: essential!

Review: Powers That Be is a heavyweight modern funk outfit which counts some serious talent in its ranks. Antibalas drummer and bassist Miles Francis and Phenomenal Handclap Band's guitarist Luke O'Malley are but two of the gifted players laying down a vintage style of deep funk on this sureshot 7" for Mighty Eye. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was a holy grail cut from the 70s, given how warm and natural the sound on the record is, but there's also a degree of finesse on both sides of the record which speaks to the band's collective endeavours in pushing classic funk forwards in the modern era.

Review: Street soul is one of the many short lived but vital in between genres that have emerged from the studios of the UK over the decades. Pause was an early act who excelled at the form as two incredibly rare and hard to find tunes that are both being pressed up bony Freestyle this month prove. The first one comes on this 12" in the form of 'It's Just Amazing' with various different mixes. The vocal mix pairs lo-fi drum breaks with shards of 80s synth stabs and a gorgeous vocal harmony finished perfectly by a melancholic bassline. The two instrumental mixes are even more dusty and lo-fi but the vocal version is the one that will always stand out and get the floor in a tizzy.

Review: The third instalment of NeighbourSoul rhythm's limited vinyl-only treatment of space-age nu-disco and funk isn't to be messed with. Straight to the point, the opening 'Love Attack' is a fast-paced guitar-led disco-funk banger - no warm-up, just dancing. Track 2, 'Dream Machine' is out-of-this-world, literally, with its vocal cosmic pinings of an android-dominated future scape against a relentless synth pattern.

Review: Charles Green, who performed under the name Chas, released his debut album For Your Love on Love Joy Records in 1985. The album's soulful r&b accompanied Green's smooth vocals and heartfelt lyrics at the forefront. Review: Indeep's 1982 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' is a stone cold classic. It has been remixed several times over the years and never stops attracting new audiences with each passing generation. On this latest reissue we get the 1980s New York-based trio's still hard-to-beat original version as well as the acapella and Smeddles's More Ass mix and More Ass dub. They are subtle reworkings that tweak the original for a little more dancefloor heft but do nothing to distill its still golden charms and catchy hooks.

Review: In 1972, French producer turned ZE Records founder Michel Esteban released a one-off single as Bella Vista, "Mister Wong". Like many of the records the New York-based entrepreneur worked on, the track gleefully joins the dots between spacey synth-pop, NYC style mutant disco and what these days we'd call sun-kissed Balearic disco. The slow motion, glassy-eyed original version comes accompanied by the original flipside "Disco Dub" - a much sparser affair focused on the killer slap bass, reverb-laden percussion and slivers of guitar and synth - and a brand new "Extended Disco Dub Edit" by Isle of Jura chief Kevin Griffiths as Jura Soundsystem. This extends the oh-too-short Disco Dub for greater dancefloor pleasure while adding some fantastic new percussion.

Review: The one and only Mr K sure does know how to cook up a masterful edit. Here he heads into gospel territory with the latest 7" in Most Excellent Unlimited's collaborations with him. Both of these tunes are appearing on 7" vinyl for the first time here and have long been staples of the sets of Danny Krivit. His 'Churchapella' edit of Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' is as holy and steamy as it gets with the whole thing sure to uplift and energise any crowd. On the backside is a superb edit of the Clark Sisters slinky rare groove gem 'Ha-Ya (Eternal Life).' It's a slightly slower tune but one that makes just as much of an impact.

Review: St Paul's Catholic Church in Louisiana was hosting a summer youth program in 1970 and 1971 and it was there that Tunnie Smith was spotted by Father George Artist, who saw potential in his great singing abilities. Smith was introduced to local musicians and bands as a result and was soon playing the local circuit. He landed a record label 18 months later and his first single came in 1973. Success followed as did an album that never actually got roasted. It was then in 1983 that he laid down the slow-burning mid-tempo soul numbers which feature in this 7" for the first time.

Review: It has been a bit of a while since we heard from edit king and seductive groove maker Late Nite Tuff Guy. Thankfully now he is back after his hiatus with more of his brilliance in the form of a third entry into his Soul Cut series. He brings his magic fingers to a pair of dazzlers here, with a hearrt-wrenching version of a latter yaers Motown anthem, with a modern update that leaves the original vocals in place but adds a little more drum weight. Review: Not to be confused with the Fresh Band boogie classic of the same name - which, strangely enough, was also released in 1984 - Carl Smith's 'Come Back Lover' is something of a hard-to-find rarity that thoroughly deserves this reissue. Written, produced and arranged by Smith, who also delivers the effortlessly soulful lead vocal, the track is an excellent example of the synth-powered, funk-fuelled NYC boogie sound pushed by DJs like Larry Levan in New York City in the early-to-mid 1980s. The bassline, in particular, is brilliant, and genuinely drives the track forward. Just as the original 1984 release did, this reissue features both the original version and the dub-style 'Club Mix', which in true Levan style includes a delay-laden drums-and-vocal breakdown midway through.

Review: Wrekin Havoc has been in no rush to get to their third EP - this one comes almost 18 months after the debut - but the music is worth the wait. It is another one from the in-house production team of the same name who describe themselves as crate diggers turned re-editors from deepest Wales. Here they set off on a Balearic-minded disco trip with the soul-drenched 'Double Deb' before 'Boon Rocks', boasting an electric boogie feel with its staying analogue lines and stiff drums. Review: Emotional Rescue is at it again with another fully licensed and remastered offering, this time bringing to wax Mataya's Golddigger with a previously digital-only 'tape Mix.' Zimbabwe-born and later London-based Mataya "Clifford" Chewaluza was a core part of the vibrant West London music scene, using his songwriting, production and multi-instrumentalist skills on albums for RCA and Virgin. He also dropped a few 12"s and this one was released in 1988. It's a cult curio with crashing 80s production, disco-tinged grooves and plenty of subtle African rhythm which includes a standout dub mix from Jura Soundsystem.

Review: Correcciones Calypso returns from a generous hiatus with the fourth edition of its acclaimed edit series, replete with four re-edits that veer from the subtle to the downright brazen. Thomass Jackson and INigo Vontier invite the French duo Youkounkoun to open proceedings with an insane early 80s edit full of big drums and exotic touches that's been blowing dancefloors all around the world for the past years - and definitely resides in the brazen category, despite a lot of work having gone into it. Olta Karawame make their debut on the series with a powerful, compact edit full of ballsy keyboard riffing and a military-sized kick drum that is guaranteed to have heads banging . Review: The small but already well formed Demon Singles Club has a couple of pearlers for you this month. This one from Jersey City, New Jersey disco and soul group Rhyze is an early 1980s classic that has become wroth a few quid over the years. The A-side tune 'Just How Sweet Is Your Love' is lush disco funk with gloriously golden grooves and silky chord work next to timeless hip-swinging disco drums and some lush Philly strong stabs. Add in horns and you have everything you need for the good times to flow. Flip it over for 'I Found Love In You' and more of the sort of heart warming sounds that bring real joy.

Review: The Ritz Band are a shockingly obscure soul band from Charleston, West Virginia - once locally famous for their hosting of the local Ritz nightclub in the city. 'I Should Have Known' is the product of one of the few efforts by the establishment to release music of their own; with a constantly rotating roster of musicians, this iteration of the band hears Raye Smith on vocals - the rest has been lost to history. The tune is a sweet, hazy and soft restoration of the original 1985 gem.

Review: The Cult had their fair share of phases from the inception in the early 80s, with Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy forming the nexus of the band through various line-ups. Their self-titled album (known as Black Sheep to the band's devoted fanbase) from 1994 captures them shortly before breaking up for the first time, when Astbury and Duffy were at odds with each other and recording their parts in separate sessions. You wouldn't know to hear this cohesive, clear-sighted slab of early 90s rock, where detectable grooves sneak in amongst the hooky riffs and Astbury's gutsy delivery. It's also one of the most personal albums for the singer, tackling some deeply personal subject matter and making for a unique point in a perennial band in UK rock history.

Review: The Innovative Leisure label is here with more of that irresistible hand-stamped white label goodness. This one comes from the super cool LA duo De Lux (who have a new album out this month) as remixed by Dan Tyler and Conrad McDonnell aka Idjut Boys. They bring plenty of their signature and spacious cosmic dub sounds to 'What Life', layering in the echo and spring reverb in fine style. The dub mix is on a constant upward trajectory that never resolves and so will have the floor in raptures with cowbells and big splashy drums. The original is also included as is their Seven Slackers remix.

Review: Eddie Logix makes his return to Rocksteady Disco fold with this fresh new 12", 'Flight Risk'. It's a varied affair that pulls from a wide range of genres including leftfield, deep house, disco, Afrobeat, and even Balearic. Some of these tunes have already been picking up high-profile support from the likes of Leo Mas, Chris Coco and Danny Krivit - no wonder given that his last on the label sold out immediately. Review: In cahoots with legendary Japanese record store Jet Set, Freestyle Records has decided to offer-up a 45 featuring two tidy cuts from Lance Ferguson's Rare Groove Spectrum 2 album, a second set of inspired cover versions from the multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and producer. On side A the Melbourne-based musician gives his take on Azymuth classic 'Veo Sobre O Horizonte', re-imaging it as a starry, vintage synth-laden shuffle through sun-baked South American jazz-funk complete with woozy horns, Herbie Hancock keyes and eyes-closed female vocalizations. On the reverse Ferguson turns his hand to Carly Simon's 'Why', adding gorgeous horn solos and sunset-ready flourishes to a faithful re-recording of the reggae-influenced number's familiar groove.

Review: Most Excellent Unlimited has now been serving up these collaborations with master editor Danny Krivit for some time, but they never grow old. The New York-based Body and Soul mainstay this time looks to Euro-disco maestro Alec Constandinos to kick off with. 'Love & Kisses' was one of his earliest works and took up a whole side of vinyl but here becomes a more compact cut with funky vibes, bass breakdowns to die for and fine a cappella to close. The legendry Donna Summer's 'Heaven Knows' then gets the Mr K treatment on the flip and becomes a horn-led and ecstatic trip to the heavens that will leave dancefloors in raptures.

Review: A Skillz and Krafty Kuts are veteran names by now but at one option they were some of the hottest new DJs and producers in the game. They pioneered a breakbeat, cut-up and paste sounds 20 years ago that was high on energy and with plenty of character. Now they look to the roots of the sounds they used to draw from and serve up a new single on Jam City that is all about disco. 'Lit Up' has loose, jumbled drums and funk basslines with some great vocal flourishes up top from Gizelle Smith. A remix on the flip takes things into deeper new soul territory.
