  3. Lettbeint Liten Sak (Bjorn Torske's Nyredisco Miks)
Review: After a year bewildered in the woods Kango takes a step forward with a new 12"! He's taking the bpm down a notch for a midtempo 80s influenced electro disco teaser called 'Lettbeint Liten Sak'. The arrangement is as always in the leftfield area of disco. Twisting and knobbing the hook in a way you might call insane. But we don't. Getting used to not being able to describe his music we just lean on his album title & simply call it Fjordfunk. To enhance the experience we managed to get the legendary dubmeister Bjørn Torske to work his magic. As always he delivers the goods with one arm behind his back. Actually he also wore blindfolds during the remix. Maybe you might hear it. We're not sure. The second on the A-side is a track called 'Bak Mål' and is that strange little track that no one would believe would ever be released.....Simply because of the EFX at the end of the track. How big balls and ego does this man have inside???

  1. Rocket Ride (extended version)
  2. Rocket Ride (The Emperor Machine version)
Review: Dean Meredith’s White Light Circus returns to the 12" format with the celestial funk of "Rocket Ride" (extended version), a synth and drum work out that pays its dues to not only the robo-disco of Giorgio Moroder, but also to the Teutonic modulations of Kraftwerk and their oscillating computer soul. For the B-side, Meredith hands over the controls to Andy Meecham, who re-configures the rocket’s motherboard, presenting us with an Emperor Machine Version that spins us sideways into a meteor shower of insistent rhythms, sputnik melodies and sound effect squiggles. This is the follow up to 2005’s acclaimed "Marching Orders" which had a legion of DJ supporters including The Glimmers, Headman, Trevor Jackson, Soulwax, Prins Thomas, Rub N Tug, Pedro Ed Banger, Idjut Boys, Optimo, Stevie Kotey & Mr Scruff, etc.

Review: The soulful title track to her album of the same name, "Bad For Me" is remixed here with a bit more flair by Larry Levan! 1. Genius Of Love (long version)
  2. Lorelei (instrumental)
Review: In 1980 Tina Weymouth was playing bass for the Talking Heads while her husband Chris Frantz played drums. The couple were vacationing in the Bahamas when they met Monty Brown and Stephen Stanley. Together the four set out to make the kind of music that David Byrne and the Talking Heads stayed clear of: romantic, sunny, dance-able pop music. Their debut single, "Genius Of Love" is that classic early 80s cross between synth-pop and hip-hop, and went right to the top of the dance charts, securing them an identity separate from that of Talking Heads. It found a home in the samples of several hip-hop aficionados and was even nicked by Mariah Carey for her 90s hit, "Heartbreaker".

OVERVIEW:
"bright and zinging, borderline Kosmische disco with very clear affinities to the whole Lindstrøm/Prins Thomas axis." - John Mulvey, Uncut Magazine

LP Limited to 500 copies worldwide!

Diskjokke delivers another trippy mastodon of epic prog disco with his new album, En Fin Tid. At once hypnotic, stomping and futuristic, the new record maintains this aesthetic without sacrificing melody or subtlety. The album flows like a journey in sound, with each song seamlessly drifting into the next. Whereas Diskjokke's debut album, Staying In, was a collection of songs made over many years, En Fin Tid was created with the intention of being released as a complete album, lending itself to an evident continuity. The album, recorded and entirely self-produced in Diskjokke's new studio, draws its inspiration from Holger Czukay's mid 80s period, Brian Eno, Arthur Russell, European disco, Allan Parsons, Tangerine Dream, Arthur Lyman and Craig Leon.

En Fin Tid, which means "a happy time" in Norwegian, refers to the period in which the album was written and recorded. Since the release of Staying In, many of Diskjokke's dreams have come true - he now focuses on music full time (as opposed to Staying In, which was recorded in the midst of studying), he performs at the clubs where he always aspired to play, and most importantly, has become a father. Additionally, Diskjokke has become a much sought-after remixer. He's made quite a name for himself with his distinctive, dubby blend of house, italo and disco remixes. In 2009, Diskjokke released Discolated, a compilation of remixes for Lykke Li, Bloc Party, Foals, Metronomy and more. Since thenhe's released remixes of Beck and Charlotte Gainsbourg, The xx's "Basic Space," the "Rosenrød" 7" for Moshi Moshi's singles clu,b and a handful of 12"s for Prins Thomas' Full Pupp label. He's currently working on a remix for Allan Parsons.

The 28 year old Diskjokke (aka Joachim Dyrdahl) was raised in Svelvik, a small town southwest of Oslo with 5,000 inhabitants, but presently lives in Oslo. He's a classically trained violinist, which he has played since he was five years old; classical music has always been, and continues to be, an important part of his life. Joachim became interested in electronic music at the age of 15 when he discovered Norwegian DJ legend Olle Abstract`s radio show, and he's been hooked ever since. Joachim has studied mathematics for eight years, but his studies have been put on hold as he is now focusing on music full time. Together with friends Prins Thomas, Todd Terje and Lindstrøm, Diskjokke is one of the mainstays in Oslo's pulsing disco scene. His first break came, in part, thanks to Prins Thomas, who released three tracks on his Full Pupp label. At the same time M.A.N.D.Y, DJ T, and the Get Physical gang in Germany released five other tracks and two 12"s on their label Kindish. Now Diskjokke releases albums on Norway's Smalltown Supersound, the label behind his debut full-length, Staying In.

Gorton founded the Athlete Edits imprint to accommodate the rare heat in his impressive record collection that doesn't fit the Cabana ethos. The inaugural release promises much with the A Side dedicated to the bumping disco burn of Black Jack's "Disco Machine". On the flip Gorton takes us on a tropical disco ride with a superlative refix of Konga's "Jungle" which features plenty of rolling bongo edits. The best is perhaps saved till last with a retweak of Ashra's "Bamboo Sands", which focuses on the dad rock guitar and adds some real depth to the bass with suitably cosmic results!

Review: Another essential history lesson here from the Peoples Potential Unlimited camp. "Super Breaker" is an early production by Miami bass legend James McCauley, better known as Maggotron,DJX or Basstech. It was originally released by the super obscure Bound Sound label in 1984, but was quickly forgotten. As one of McCauley's earliest works, it arguably marks the point where electro began to morph into Miami bass. There are vocal and instrumental versions on this must have 7", both featuring a mix of long synth chords, oh-so thick synth bass and a healthy dose of vintage drum machine breaks.

Review: In recent years we've become accustomed to disco compilations appearing at a furious rate. While many of these compilations are undoubtedly worthy of attention, the volume of releases can sometimes be bewildering. This eight track selection from Al Kent, the second in his Disco Love series, ticks all the right boxes, however. Even by the highest crate digging standards, these tracks are pretty obscure; many won't have had much of an airing since their original release. Those into the rich, soulful side of disco - that brand of string-laden dancefloor material most associated with the Philadelphia International label and studio -will find much to enjoy. Perhaps the most noteworthy is Scarborough's delightfully sweet "Make Love To You", an epic of biblical proportions that lasts longer than most drunken one night stands. See also Valerie Simmons' super sweet "I Can't Make It On My Own" and the rousing orchestral manoeuvres of "I've Got The Need". This luxurious gatefold double album also comes replete with extensive track notes from compiler Al Kent.

Review: Attention Vegetarian vinyl consumers - approach this excellent introduction to the I'm A Cliche canon proper from Hannulelauri with caution if the sight of bare meat causes your constitution consternation. Raw steak on the cover art aside, there's little other reason not to indulge in this brilliantly oddball take on house music from the Finnish duo. Opening track "Box To Box" splays a cheeky acid stab lead over rusted percussion steeped in off kilter rhythms, whilst deep in the machine what sounds like an elephant tries to play along in time - it's a wonderfully tongue in cheek riposte to po faced music everywhere. The accompanying remix from Throne Of Blood duo Populette does a sterling job of realigning the track to burning deep house bump that's a perfect fit for the midnight hour. On the flip the title track "Dysfunction" straddles a lysergic house pump that will prove potent in the right atmosphere, whilst Toby Tobias embellishes the track with some soulful excess via diva warbling and hand claps.

  1. I Need A Dollar (Tensnake remix)
Review: This week's lesson in simple musical mathematics is demonstrated by Tensnake and Aloe Blacc. The former's inexorable rise in 2010 has perhaps been matched by the worldwide popularity of the latter's "I Need A Dollar", so getting Mr Niemerski on board to remix the track was a smart move. The end results are typically appealing, with Blacc's vocals looped brilliantly around a burning deep house arrangement that peaks in all the right places. The central energetic pulse of cavernous bass stabs and slick hi-hats are inundated by massive swathes of soaring chords as the track progresses, with the requisite breakdowns augmented by choral vocal refrains. Totally euphoric in its intentions and execution, this is bound to have devastating effects when implemented at the right time.

Review: While the noise swirling around them is getting close to deafening, you get the feeling that the hype wouldn't penetrate the ethereal bubble that Peaking Lights exist in. The partnership of Indra Dunis and Aaron Coyes exudes innocence and wide-eyed delight at every turn - in that sense they make a pleasing departure from much of the current lo-fi zeitgeist. Where many of these artists have staked their claim to degraded sonics through a cacophony of noise and scrubbed-out vocals, Peaking Lights have a delicate, charming nature to them which uses withered production traits as a pathway rather than an end point. There's no denying that Lucifer is lo-fi (they even wryly name on of their tracks "Lo-Hi" on the album) but they don't use that aesthetic to mask the music that they make. Rather it sounds like they really don't have anything else to make their songs with other than Coyes' ropey home-made equipment and a battered four-track recorder. Whether this really is the case or not, there's no air of contrivance about Peaking Lights. For that reason alone the hype is well and truly justified. Highly recommended.

Review: Finally in on triple vinyl! Given the fashion for library music, disco noir and the synth-heavy soundtrack work of Goblin and John Carpenter, it was probably inevitable that Italians Do It Better would dip their toe into cinematic waters at some point. Themes From An Imaginary Film is their contribution to the oeuvre - an all-star collection of melodic synth doodles, atmospheric compositions and faux cinematic themes produced by Chromatics/Glass Candy men Jonny Jewell and Nat Walker. Its 37 tracks are, predictably, impressively evocative, variously recalling sounds and styles previously employed by notable synth composers Vangelis, Jan Hammer, Claudio Simonetti and, of course, John Carpenter.

Review: By now, we should all know the story of Tony Wilson's ultimately doomed Factory Records imprint; the rags-to-riches-to-rags story of the design-conscious Manchester imprint, excesses and all, has been written many times over. Strut's initial FAC. DANCE compilation, curated with love by walking dance music encyclopedia Bill Brewster and released last year, also documented the label's attempts to court the dancefloor. The first FAC DANCE collection told its story well, focusing not only the hits, but also the underground records that became anthems at the Hacienda and beyond. For every "Love Tempo", "Dirty Disco", "Love On A Hilltop" or "Reach For Love", there was something a little odd, usually from either the Durutti Column or Biting Tongues. It was hardly exhaustive, but then condensing a decade of influential and inspired releases onto two discs is nigh on impossible. It's for this reason - and, we assume, the commercial success of that first volume - that Strut have decided to put together a second volume of Factory dance classics and rarities, FAC DANCE 02. This time, the script is altogether different. With many of the more familiar post-punk and straight-up Factory dance releases previously featured in the first collection, FAC Dance 02 needed to dig deeper. To do that, Strut have recruited former Factory Benelux boss James Nice, a man who knows more about the ins and outs of the Factory back catalogue than most. Over the last few years, his LTM label has lovingly reissued a number of classic, long-forgotten Factory albums from the likes of Quando Quango and A Certain Ratio. FAC Dance 02 might be lacking in stone cold hits or accessible hooks but those seeking these should already have invested in the label's inaugural retrospective or perhaps stick to "Blue Monday". It does however contain some thrilling and genuinely historic music, presented in consummate fashion by an expert on the subject. For that reason alone, it should be essential listening.

  1. I'm In Love (Caught Up version)
  2. I'm In Love (instrumental version)
Review: Having given the Dream 2 Science album the wider audience it richly deserved earlier this year, Rush Hour dig out another NYC garage classic from the archives of Ben Cenac for a much deserved reissue. Unlike that album, this Sha-Lor record Cenac recorded in collaboration with vocalists Sharmelle and Lorrie back in 1988 gained wider success, becoming a Summer Of Love staple. It's not hard to see why "I'm In Love" proved so enduring on the A Side Caught Up mix either, with the duo's vocals still retaining a power to move some 24 years on, while Cenac's stripped back bass heavy production is NYC garage at its finest. This being Rush Hour, there's also the bonus of a previously unreleased instrumental version occupying the flip.

Review: Under his Erdbeerschnitzel guise, producer Tim Kelling has consistently delivered excellent material that's notoriously hard to pigeonhole. Tender Leaf, his second full-lenghth, follows a similar pattern. His default setting seems to be bright but woozy electronica heavily laden with nu-disco synths and curious, off-beat deep house rhythms. There's plenty of that here, alongside more dancefloor-centric tracks that shift further towards loose deep house (see "Semantics") and skittering, bass-music inspired beatscapes that glisten with high-speed rhythmic intent. There's also a deliciously wonky house/nu-disco/R&B fusion ("Through The Night") that's almost worth the admission price on its own.

Review: If you want hugs on the dancefloor deep into the night, Late Night Tough Guy's (formally DJ HMC) "Bless The Rains" is the perfect drug. The Adelaide based luminary rehashes Toto's "Africa" in a heavily pitched down and simple edit fit for any fromage-laced discotheque. Skirting around the throbbing bassline and triangle hits of "My Body On Fire" is a vocal that will have some train-spotters pulling their hair out in frustration, while "Not In Love Anymore" will have both Warren G/Nate Dogg and Michael McDonald fans bumping and grinding to excess.

Review: John Morales and his M&M collaboration with Sergio Munzibai have helped pioneer the disco edit and dancefloor remix. The duo are known for adding touches of latin percussion to their extensions and Part-A of a two part retrospect sees Morales unveil some previously unreleased M&M material. The legendary melted chocolate vocals of "Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up" by Barry White get a simple and irresistible "Keep On Doin' It" touch up, while M&M save only the best vocals by pop and jazz singer Jean Carne in their "South Philly Groove" mix to "Was That What Is". The sweaty dance heat of Teddy Pendergrass' "If You Know Like I Know" receives some added length and extra loops in the appropriately titled "Teddy Knows Best" mix, while cut and pasted (literally) drum loops give Sander Barber's "I Think I'll Do Some Stepping On My Own" some dancefloor momentum with the "Stepping Out The Door" mix.

Review: With Minimal Wave at their current celebrated level, it's nice of them to occasionally dig into their archives and reissue some of their earliest releases for those Johnny Come Lately's who might have missed out first time around. Having done the right thing with an all too timely reissue of Das Ding's HSTA late last year, Veronica Vasicka's label now turn their attentions to Blackpool and revisit Spy Thriller by Das Kabinette. Originally released back in 2008, this eight track collection brings together material the trio of Michael Hall, David Bracher and Craig Hemmings recorded in the early 80s including the cult hits "The Cabinet" and "Fudge It" which appeared on a 1983 7". Fans of Silent Servant mixtapes will probably be familiar with these tracks whilst the remaining six tracks are typically unreleased studio productions that paint a fascinating picture of primitive synth music that's subtley touched by the death throes of New Romanticism.
