This Counterpoint release is compiled by DJ/record dealer, Nick The Record, who has one of the best 12" single collection in the world, and owns most of the P&P catalogue. This compilation makes the point that disco was very much a street level thing. Many of it's greatest moments came out on independent labels, and were geared primarily towards a marginalised audience. This is a world away from the anaemic generic disco fodder that poured out in the wake of "Saturday Night Fever".

Review: In 2001, Environ boss Morgan Geist took a solo break from Metro Area with a hot new 12" and the Super EP. Inspired by classic techno and house with a heavy dose of dramatic disco, Geist melds the organic sounds of Metro Area with his own innovative style on this EP, incorporating live instrumentation with a funky, machine groove. The A-side cut "24K" melds an old-is-gold DMX house drum track with lush basslines and live string sugar from the Kelley Polar Quartet. On the flip, "Sleaze" takes the dancers into a sweaty mix of new wave chords and stabs (think New Order's Blue Monday or Prelude's more robotic releases) mixed with organic electric piano and dubs. The EP rounds out with "Lullaby" - a melancholy jam that melds Kraftwerk with Candido, jamming numbers beats under delicate chords and a sublime trumpet solo courtesy of jazz virtuoso and house producer James Duncan.

Review: The runaway success of Metro Area 4 EP (released November 2001) surpassed all expectation, not least the Metro Area's own. The feature track "Miura" - a sinister, sparse and absolutely unique piece of dance music - captured the imagination of a broad cross-section of DJs, dancers and listeners from almost every genre. Ubiquitously charted and still played with reverence today, "Miura" unwittingly broke Metro Area's music out of the underground. Review: Repress! Excellent sounding pressing of an impossibly rare LP track, that has never sounded as clear or dynamic as this version. Originally recorded live in the First Baptist Church in Crown Heights, New York City, in 1982 and pressed only for the congregation, Walter Gibbons (owner of Jus Born studios and a new born Christian at the time of the recording) acquired a copy and played it out at the 7th Avenue. Rock & Soul shop were he worked. This was the place where most discerning DJs and soulful dance music aficionados picked up on this new sound, and it quickly became a Garage, Loft and Zanzibar club classic, championed by Larry Levan, David Mancuso and others.
