Review: The arrival of the Acapellas Anonymous series in the mid/late '80s was a massive gamechanger, giving immediate access to DJs and producers to hundreds of vocal samples that would have taken a fortune (and a lifetime) to collect. Edit king Mr K has rebuilt, remastered, and carefully portioned them onto a five disc set of 7-inch singles, "including all the classic vocal bits that became iconic samples," and more than a few new additions to bring things up to date. You'll know more than a few of these on first listen, others you may have never even realised were samples, but no-one will underestimate the power of a great vocal sample dropping in the right way in the right mix. An absolute essential.

Review: Modern Talking, the German duo of Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders had plenty of big disco hits back in the 80s and now much of their catalogue is being revisited and reissued. Next up is Alone from 1999 which was their eighth studio album and one that features the big standout hits 'You Are Not Alone' and 'Sexy, Sexy Lover.' The album was a chart success in Germany at the time and sold over half a million units so was eventually certified platinum by the Bundesverband Musikindustrie. It is full of camp and Euro-centric disco sounds with old school synths front and centre and plenty of fun vocal hooks.

Review: Anyone lucky enough to have caught James Murphy and his entourage of highly talented musical friends live will attest that it's here LCD Soundsystem truly excel. And whilst this London Sessions album recorded in the aftermath of such a performance at last year's Glastonbury Festival does not replicate such an elation filled experience, the chance to hear some of the band's best tracks recorded live makes this worth investigating. It's basically a showcase for how tight a group of musicians Gavin Russom, Pat Mahoney and Nancy Whang are, most notably on "Get Innocuous" where Russom really goes to town on the synths and "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" which gets embellished with a liberal dose of tightness, tautness and spikiness. The band has such an all encompassing back catalogue that you could spend all day dissecting which tracks they should have included here, and it's a mark of the aforementioned tightness that even the somewhat risible "Drunk Girls" sounds markedly improved here.

Review: Tomoko Aran's More Relax is one of those red hot city pop records form the 80s. It came on Warner in 1984, to be exact, and was Aran's fourth album to be overseen by long-time Casiopea producer Shunsuke Miyazumi. Review: Depending on how you spend your leisure time, you may or may know not that Moana Pozzi was primarily a pornographic actor. Despite this, she was also something of a crossover pop star in 1980s and early 90s who secured some commercial hits in her native Italy. Mondo Groove has recently served up some of them and now Cinedelic serves up her full-length Loveland including three previously unreleased tracks. This one is taken from the original masters and marked her official singing debut. Many of these tunes made it into her films and steamy live shows.

Review: Lakeside's Fantastic Voyage dates back to 1980 and is also the name of the number one hit the Dayton, Ohio group had in 1981. The song topped the r&b chart and marked their one and only ever entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 55. Sample hounds may know that hip-hop star Coolio used parts of this song for his own hit of the same name in 1994. The rest of the tunes are just as much a great and funky fusion of soul, disco and r&b with great vocal harmonies, guttural male growls and infectious drums.

This one is another case in point as it finds music historian, DJ and daytime party promoter John Armstrong - who has put together more than 200 compilations - digging deep to offer up an alternate take on the famous bubblegum sounds that came out of Black South Africa towards the end of the apartheid years. Yebo! Rare Mzansi Party Beats from Apartheid's Dying Years is a superb showcase of diverse sounds created by the youth of the day as a means of escape. There is already talk of a second volume, which we're very much ready for after hearing this one.

Review: Esteemed American IDM producer Drew Daniel is back with a new album under his The Soft Pink Truth alias titled Is It Going To Get Any Deeper Than This? Of the title, Daniel explained it's an actual question proposed to him which has become a mantra of sorts, with the album created as a way to imagine possible musical responses to her question. Created during Covid lockdowns, Daniel recruited a virtual disco band from friends across the world and traversing many genres such as disco, minimalism, ambient, shoegaze and jazz, then pieced together in his Baltimore studio. Guests include Turkish arranger Ulas Kurugullu, Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xu, Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes), Brooklyn techno artist Rose E Kross and Daniel Clark.

Review: Calvin "Popcorn" Ward is one of those legendary musical figures form time gone by. He put out just one album and a couple of Eps, but they were good enough to secure him an enduring elegy with funk and soul fans. His Prime Choice album came on Shanell in 1983 and the one copy currently for sale on second-hand sites is over 630 quid. Thankfully Mad About has assembled this heavyweight reissue. Review: Vincent Montana Jr.'s Salsoul Orchestra was always a big band with a difference. The composer and percussionist lead them to great disco heights from 1974 and into the early 80s. They played as a backing band for many of the vocalists on the Salsoul Records label and recorded plenty of their own material including no fewer than 11 albums of soul, Philly grooves, funk and Latin percussion. There were up to 50 different members of the collective and they mixed up playful vocals, flamboyant strings and big guitar licks with big hits like 'Tangerine' and 'Salsoul Hustle' as well as laying down some great Christmas covers. Experience some of their many joys with this great anthology.

Review: Chicago funk band Royal Flush release sonly one full length on their local Texas label Lucky and that was Hot Spot. They did so in 1980 before later reissuing it via GEC and although it isn't one of the most well known albums amongst funk heads, we think that is rather a crime because it is a top notch if not underrated album. It is couched in the traditions of the genre but with nods to styles like P-Funk. If you can find an OG copy you will have to shell out plenty of money and although this same label put out a CD version in 1994, it has not been reissued on vinyl before.

Review: Lleida-based Espacial Discos is a division of Guerssen, with a focus on '70s - '80s rare disco, funk and boogie. Here we have a highly sought-after album from the US, originally released as a promo album in 1979 in a blank sleeve by The New York Disco Orchestra. They are tight lipped regarding who was behind the project, but it was rumored to be a bunch of anonymous session musicians of the NYC scene at the time, with top engineers such as Jack Jones and Joaquin J. Lopes. This the first ever LP reissue of Reverie, featuring new artwork (based on the band's original idea for the intended US cover) and restored sound from the master tapes.

Review: Berlin-based boy/girl band Bionda e Lupo has a unique sound that brings alienation, disdain and delusionary disco to synth wave. Their stark rhythms and honeyed melodies and lyrics all combine to mesmeric effect, and never more so was that true than on this new album, La Deutsche Vita. It is made on an array of authentic old school analogue gear so has a lovely future-retro aesthetic, with bright melodies and angular, post-punk drum funk overlaid with sweet vocals. It's fast-paced body music with a playful twist but serious compositional skills.

Review: Patrick Adams is the creative force behind plenty of next-level disco records from the late 1970s and early '80s. One of the most remarkable of the lot, though, is Cloud One's 1976 album Atmosphere Strut. Its title track is a stone cold dancefloor classic created by Adams with help from collaborator Peter Brown and it is a real space-synth odyssey with a deep disco groove. The album is 45 this year so it gets a special anniversary reissue featuring that tune with all the rest from the spacious 'Spaced Out' to the funky astral grooves of 'Charleston Hopscotch' and more star gazing and romantic jazz-funk of 'Dust To Dust.'

The eight cuts are all untitled and uncredited which makes them all the more tantalising, frankly. They are all couched in classic disco and boogie sounds, with some hitting harder and some more seductive and loved up. 'Track 3' is a real street soul stepper that will enliven any crowd and get the emotions going while 'Track 6' has a crunchy, raw electro-inflected style. All killer, no filler.

This remains a great record despite its vintage.

Review: Riding high on the buzz he has generated in the last twelve months, Max Graef delivers this album to Tartelet as a man very much in demand. His style, fuelled on the foundations of sampling funk and soul to a brilliantly modern end, has more space to breathe on this LP, but still the fundamentals remain.
