Review: German pop label ZYX played a key role in spreading the popularity of Italo-disco around Europe in the 1980s, and continues to support Euro-disco and Italian synth-pop to this day. New Generation Bootmix, named in tribute to the label's popular '80s Italo megamix series, offers a non-stop, 30-track mix-up of contemporary Euro-disco, Italo-pop and decidedly camp synth-pop. Given the synth sounds, breathy Europeans singing in English and obvious Bobby 'O' influences, it's like a blast from the past. While an acquired taste, there are some notable highlights. These include Modeone's piano-laden, semi-Balearic "Sometimes", The Sweeps' early Pet Shop Boys-ish "Facing The Night" and Vyck Vyo's chiming "Angelina".

What he's delivered, showcased across this excellent compilation, is genuinely excellent, with his versions remaining faithful to the originals while stripping out any duff elements and adding a dash of late-night, club-ready sleaze. Highlights include Dallum's 'instrumental dub' style reworks of Mono Band's 'Ghost Town' and Lectric Workers' 'Robot Is Systematic', a pleasingly mind-altering revision of 'Witch' by Helen, and a brilliant rearrangement of P Lion's anthemic 'Happy Children'.

Review: ZYX out of Germany sure does know a thing or two about proper good disco from across the spectrum. This year they have dropped some vital reissues of classic albums and tunes like Delanua's 'How Many Fill' and BIBA's Top Model and now they drop the second instalment of their Italo Disco Spacesynth collection. It does exactly what it says on the tin with dazzling tunes that reach for the stars. The production is delightfully analogue and retro from Koto's shiny 'Visitors' to the twee arps of Cyber People's 'Polaris.'

They're making great use of that archive, too, frequently offering up compilations that mix scene anthems and unlikely chart hits with sought-after cuts and overlooked tracks. They're at it again here on the sixth volume in the 'Space Synth Collection' series. It encompasses tracks that span the entirety of the 1980s and early '90s rather than just the sound's peak period, with the emphasis on muscular, Moroder style basslines, fizzing chords, intergalactic synth stabs and cheery, rush-inducing melodies. Highlights include the instrumental version of "Feel The Drive" by Doctor's Cat, Koto's thrilling "Chinese Revenge", and Stardance's "Cyber Mind".

Review: Long-running German label ZYX has continued to support the Italo-disco and revivalist European synth-pop scenes since the 1980s, when it was responsible for distributing many Italian records throughout Europe. Here, they dip into their archives for a second volume in the Italo-Disco Space Synth Collection series. While mostly focused on tracks produced since the early 2000s, there's an authentically old skool Italo feel to proceedings - think bubbling analogue synthesizer lines, spiraling outer-space melodies, deliciously camp builds and grandiose break-downs. Such is the authenticity of the retro-futurist sound showcased through out, you'd think that the tracks were produced in 1985, rather than 2015 (Galactic Warriors' "Alien Revenge", for example, sounds like a Bobby Orlando produced Pet Shop Boys B-side).

Artists including Stockholm Nightlife, Diego, Love Kills, and Valerie Dore all appear, deploying lovesick, city-slicking themes: you've got gated snares, riffy synth arps and impassioned masc vocals aplenty. Marc Fruttero & Alex Papale's 'What You Want' is particularly dreamy and atmospheric, owing to Italo's longstanding ability to evoke more than just its poppy structure. No wonder the genre is a favourite among the world's biggest-name DJs.

Review: Although most think of Italo disco as a purely 1980s phenomenon, in truth it never really died. The pop end of the spectrum - the style that inspired many British synth-pop acts in Thatcher's era, most notably the Pet Shop Boys and producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman - continues to thrive around Europe. This second Italo Disco New Generation compilation from pop/Euro-disco specialists ZYX shines a light on the sound today, offering a mix of jaunty synth-pop and Bobby Orlando-ish dancefloor energy. While it's decidedly camp throughout (as you'd expect, really), there are some gems to be found - not least Eddy Huntington's Sally Shapiro-ish "Honey Honey!" and Galactic Warriors intergalactic synth jam "Humanoid Battle".

Review: For those who still believe Italo disco died with the on-set of Italian house in the late 1980s, ZYX Italo Disco New Generation should provide a wake-up call. Out of sight and largely out of mind, Italo and Euro disco has continued to flourish. This expansive collection from German Euro-disco specialists ZYX showcases a new wave of Italo and clunky analogue euro-pop. It is, of course, camper than a scout jamboree, with more dodgy English accents than an overseas call centre, but that's always been part of Italo's charm. If you've yet to introduce yourself to the delights of Siberian Heat and Ryan Paris - an old Italo pop star making a belated comeback - then dive right in.
