Review: Much loved funk, soul and disco innovators Fat Back Band are the subject of this remix EP featuring long time UK lend Joey Negro. He adds some extended breaks, more modern production twists and a certain je ne sais quoi to '(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop', which is deep cut funk with natty riffs and sliding drums. The original is also include for those who irk to keep it OG, and on the flip comes an instrumental. Last of all, Fat Back's sleazy 'Backstrokin' brings the funk with ass wiggling hooks and happy trumpet toots.

(Eerie) For Your Love (9:28)
Maiden Voyage (7:29)
Review: With this 12" from hyped deep house duo Mount Liberation Unlimited, Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space label notches up a quarter-century of releases. Fittingly, it's rather special. "(Eerie) For Your Love" is particularly potent, with the duo layering up line after line of synthesizer sweetness atop a jazzy and tactile groove. It's positive, atmospheric and thoroughly beguiling, with nods towards classic Floating Points and the 'scandolearic' nu-disco of Prins Thomas's Full Pupp label. The duo's love of loose and snappy drum machine percussion comes to the fore on the similarly blissful and Balearic B-side, "Maiden Voyage", which is every bit as delightful as its' predecessor.

Hot Tonight (part II) (4:06)
Review: Here's a nod to late 70s disco, funk and boogie featuring some of the best NYC musicians to grace the scene in the past 20 years, and recorded at Soul Fire Studios featuring over two dozen musicians. Members of El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap- Kings, Antibalas and more are featured on 10th Street's '(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight' which is a classic and timeless disco funk affair featuring an absolutely sublime string section. Over on the flip, the slower and more emotive 'Hot Tonight' (part II) makes for feelgood vibes on the dancefloor later in the night, featuring sensual vocals to boot.

Plastic Fantastic - "Here Comes The Sun" (Beatfanatic remix) (10:00)
Review: A two-sided affair from Aficionado upon which we see faces old and new. Leonardo takes the lead; new the label, within seconds of hearing the sleazy, low-slapping bassline and purring vocals of "(It's A) Long Way" and the dreamy star-gazing synth arpeggios, epic guitar solo and filmic drums of "Cosmic Summer" you'll understand why he's also appeared on Claremont and Is It Balearic? in the past. Finally Swedish nu disco champion Beatfanatic gets busy on a Plastic Fantastic classic, laying down a percussion-focused house number that's up there with Ashely Beedle's finest in the groove department.

Moodies Basement (4:19)
Review: Masterminded by Jeff Dynamite Silverman, 10th Street is an all-star studio band comprised of some of NYC's best disco, funk and soul musicians of the last two decades (including members of Antibalas, the Dap-Kings, The Expressions and El Michels Affair). The collective's self-titled debut album, which dropped earlier this year, is a genuine must-listen and offers a near perfect distillation of disco, soul and funk flavours of the 1970s. This 7" single sports two of that set's standout cuts: hazy, mid-tempo, laidback disco-funk number 'Livin' In New York City', where Blaxploitation guitar licks, spacey synths, sustained organ chords and eyes-closed female vocals catch the ear, and the weightier, more percussive and undeniably dancefloor-friendly instrumental 'Moodie's Basement'. In a word: essential!

Mighty Mighty (3:28)
Review: Expansion deals pretty much in good vibes only and that is what we have here with OZONE's '(Our Hearts) Will Always Shine'. It is a 7" that radiates with infectious energy and heartfelt emotion as it seamlessly blends elements of pop, electronic, and dance music. The uplifting melodies soar high, the pulsating beats power things along and the soulful vocals deliver a message of resilience and positivity. The song's anthemic chorus is destined to take listeners to a new level and ignite dance floor in equal measure and it sure does that. 'Mighty Mighty' on the flip is another feel good and upbeat funky disco workout.

Xtra Special (instrumental) (4:04)
Review: Xtra xtra read all about it! Backatcha excavate a serious New York disco boogie rarity from 82. One of the first productions by BC Records founder Began Cekic, led by prolific backing-vocalist for the likes of Chic and Talking Heads Dolette McDonald, the result is a sultry downtempo affair with an obscene slap-bass line, sweet synth sprinkles and a strut that's roomy enough for Dolette to do her thing. Complete with an instrumental, this lives up to its name. Special.

Review: Backatcha has dug deep to unearth this bit of bonafide disco brilliance from the New York boogie scene of the early 1980s. McDonald was a fine soul disco vocalist who worked as a session singer for the likes of The Police, Rolling Stones and Talking Heads. '(Xtra) Special' was the only solo single she ever put out and it came on the BC Records label. It will cost you a pretty penny if you can find an original, so cop this reissue which is backed with an instrumental and pressed on its own fresh 12". The original version is glorious - all laid-back deep disco groove, embellished with funk riffs, celestial keys and the purity of McDonald's loved-up vocals.

Dancing Into The Stars (extended version) (11:05)
Review: Boogie badman Leroy Burgess was responsible for some of the greatest disco and electrofunk jams of the early '80s. Even so, few were quite as special as "(You've Got) That Something", a 1981 killer that distilled all that was good about his productions - those distinctive cowbell patterns, life-affirming slap bass, spiraling synths, hard-wired disco guitars and one of his finest vocal performances - in one essential, 11-minute package. As on the original '81 12", it comes backed with the similarly impressive "Dancing Into The Stars", whose melodic bassline is arguably even better than that found on the A-side. If you don't already own a copy of the original pressing, this reissue should be an essential purchase.

Hooked On You (Javi Frias edit) (4:45)
Review: Over the past few years Javi Frias has been building his reputation as one of Spain's foremost purveyors of authentic funk, soul and disco. His edits are delivered in a classic style, treating the original with the utmost respect while nudging the arrangement into the perfect dancefloor fodder. So it goes on this first instalment on Disco Pocho, which finds Frias working up two classic slices of disco funk on a 7" guaranteed to warm many a selector's record bag. "Rollerskating" is a sizzling burner of a party track, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, "Hooked On You" is equally essential.

You Got What I Need (Javi Frias edit)
Review: After making a promising start with their first installment, Disco Pocho return with a second round of expertly selected, sliced and segued groovers from the parties of yesteryear. Javi Frias is the cat on the buttons this time around, taking two loose and limber disco funk burners and giving them just the right subtle touch to set the place alight. "It's A Shame" has an easy tempo, but there's more than enough heat embedded in the looped up slices Frias gets busy with - it's a dense, rugged and rock-tinged sound that should please Brass Construction fans. On the flip, "You Got What I Need" turns things up with a powerful, diva-led gem that's heavy on the one, just like it should be.

Review: Prepare to strap yourself into for a super smooth ride on this 11th helping of steamy disco pleasure from Edit & Dub Recordings out of Tokyo. The icy cold vocals on Persia's "Inch By Inch" ride over feathered snares and rubbery kicks that are simply irresistible. Noodling synth funk and subtle cosmic rays all add lushness to a most succulent groove. The second a-side is "Principle" from Parlet and is another intimate and steamy disco number that worms its way into your affections with muted oboes, smooth-sliding grooves and a lead sax that has you hot under the collar.

Freex (12:20 version)
Freex (1982 Nyc Disco dub)
Freex (1978 instrumental)
Review: One of the joys of the Edit & Dub releases - aside from the scalpel edits-meets-delay-laden disco dubs vibe employed by the shadowy producers behind the series - is the way that the selected material is often insanely rare and hard-to-find. That's the case on the label's latest offering, which delivers deliciously percussive, dubbed-out revisions of sought-after cuts from an obscure outfit called The Freex Machine. The A-side '12:20 Mix' is an epic take that strikes a perfect balance between groove-based dub disco heaviness and delay-smothered disco-funk hedonism. Track two, the '1980 NYC Disco Dub' has a more driving (but still groovy), organ-rich feel, while the EP-closing '1978 Instrumental' is a sweaty, percussion-laden disco-funk smasher with added early morning dancefloor grit.

Polyrhythm Jizm
Review: There's much to enjoy about Andrew Allsgood's Free Association edit series, from the psychedelic trippiness of the '70s rock-inspired artwork, to the impressive oddness of their source material. Of course, this would mean nothing if the edits didn't deliver, but to date they've been nothing less than inspired. There's more brilliance to be found on this third installment, from the voodoo percussion and slowly building intensity of "Polyryhthm Jizm", to the loose Afrobeat goodness of lead cut "Grassland". The EP's third track, the dense afro-rock epic "Zulu Salute" is arguably the highlight of another inspired collection of inventive and unusual re-edits.

Review: Over the last few years, Vietnamese DJ Lotus Disco has been taking the international soul scene by storm. Here she presents her first compilation CD, a 12-track salvo packed to the rafters with high-grade boogie and disco treats. While there a few well-known scene staples present - think Claudja Barry's "Sweet Dynamite", Staple Singers' cover of Talking Heads' "Slippery People" and the killer dub of Geraldine Hunt's "Can't Fake This Feeling" - it's the lesser-known delights that really sparkle. Highlights include the soulful disco-funk shuffle of Project's "Love Rescue", the slap-bass propelled brilliance of Dee Dee Sharp Gamble's "Breaking & Entering", Shawn Jackson's sensual electrofunk roller "Loveline" and a pair of hot-to-trot slammers from Suzy Q.

Review: After impressing with a rock-solid EP of beefed-up disco re-edits on the freshly minted Say Namm series, BDK returns with a similarly minded (and equally as impressive) sequel. The rising star sets his stall out via the gently jacking drum machine beats, funky disco bass and fiendishly tweaked sampled loops of 'Just Can't Be Without You', before sticking a peak-time house rocket up a gospel-seeped disco gem on the righteous and life-affirming 'All I Want'. Bumpin', boogie-sampling disco-house bustle is the order of the day on the bass-heavy, sweat-soaked celebration that is 'Oh What A Life', while 'Disco Sauce' is a string-drenched, filter-sporting, French Touch style dancefloor treat.

Beginning with the emotive late night deep house of "A1" followed by the smoky, funked-up jazz bar vibe of B2. On the flip, we have some uplifting classic house on "Track 3" which is packed full of swing and infectious hands in the air stabs and closing out the EP is a bit of dusty melancholia influenced by classic Tehro Parrish/3 Chairs kind of vibes. As an added bonus, the label also treats you with a very special branded tote bag.
