Balance unit:

- The balance unit is made of two VCAs which are controlled by the sum of manual Balance control and the balance CV input in the opposite direction.
- The audio input of VCA1 is hard-wired to the VCO output, audio input 2 is connected to the socket Ext.In.
- The output of the balance unit is used as audio input for the VCF
- Bal.: manual balance control, fully CCW the internal VCO is used, fully CW the external signal (Ext.In) is used, at centre position both signals have about the same level
- CV Bal.: CV input for balance (range about 0...+5V)
- Ext. In: external audio input for VCA2, about 5 Vpp level required for similar loudness as the internal VCO
- This socket is normalled to the internal VCO suboctave f/2 signal (rectangle with half the frequency), if no external signal is applied the suboctave signal is used as the second signal for the balance unit

VCF:

- 24 dB low pass
- Frq: manual frequency control
- FM1: frequency modulation depth (attenuator wired to the VCF FM1 socket, the socket is normalled to the internal Envelope signal and then FM1 controls the modulation depth of the internal envelope applied to the filter)
- FM2 (socket) : second CV input for VCF without attenuator (about 1V/octave), can be used e.g. for VCF tracking by connecting the same CV which is used also for the VCO frequency
- Res: manual resonance control (up to self oscillation)
- If the VCO is turned off (waveform switch = centre position, pulsewidth control = fully CCW or CW) and the VCF resonance is set to maximum the module can be used as a sine oscillator, the tracking at socket VCF FM2 is about 1V/octave (not as precise as the VCO but much better than most other filters)
- ~ 11 octaves frequency range (~ 10 Hz ... 20kHz)

VCA:

- Gain: manual amplitude control (initial gain), can be used to open the VCA without envelope signal
- VCA (switch): used to switch between gate and envelope as control signal for the VCA, in centre position the VCA is not controlled by envelope or gate
- Note: when gate is used the VCA is controlled directly by the gate signal (i.e. hard on/off), this may lead to clicking noise under certain conditions (especially with low VCO/VCF frequencies)
- Special control scale: exponential scale in the range from about -20dB to -80/90dB, linear scale from about -20dB to 0dB
- Remark: this special control scale results in a loudness behaviour that is a bit different from pure linear or exponential VCAs
- Out: audio output of the module (= VCA output)

Envelope:

- Gate (socket): Gate input (min. +5V), can be normalled to the bus gate signal by means of a jumper
- Att: manual control for Attack
- D/R: manual control for Decay/Release

Topographic drum sequencer module - 16HP wide
Notes: Take the user interface of an euclidean sequencer, a healthy dose of machine learning and graph algorithms, megabytes of drum loops, hours of intensive computations and you've got a drum pattern generator like no other.

Grids' "brain" is a map of the typical drum patterns used in (mostly electronic) music, laid out by similarity, trained on a large corpus of drum loops. The module can smoothly interpolate and navigate from one pattern to the other, at the whim of a knob move or a CV.

But Grids' knowledge of drum patterns goes far beyond what would be achieved with presets - given a position in the map, thousands of variations can be intuitively generated by controlling the "event density" of each of the 3 channels (bd, sd, hh) - gradually moving from a sparse backbone to a deliciously rich pattern with ghost notes, rolls and fills.

Notes: Blinds is a 4-channel voltage-controlled signal polarizer. Each channel consists of a polarizer circuit, also known as a four-quadrant multiplier. This circuit acts like a VCA, except that a negative control voltage will cause the output signal to be inverted, instead of being silenced. Voice allocator, note hocketing & analog shift register module - 6HP
Notes: The Shifty is essentially a combination of four sample and hold stages, a sequential gate and sequencer controller. This collection of functions allows for some specific and useful utility application.

One of the primary uses for Shifty is to take a monophonic sequence source and route each new note of the sequence to up to four different synthesizer voices in a specific pattern. In this way you can create pseudo polyphonic sequences since each voice can be triggered to play and sustain while the next voice int the sequence gets triggered. Another term for this is hocketing.

The other main application of the Shifty is to function as an Analog Shift Register. In this mode each new gate input received causes the current set of pitches to be shifted to new output locations as a new one is added and the oldest one is replaced. This can be an interesting way to create chords that are up to four stacked notes when used with a pitch sequence source that has a harmonious series of notes (e.g. a pentatonic scale works really well). Even just using two of the outputs will yield very interesting melodic interplay and is an excellent way to make a simple sequence much more complex and interesting.

In a more basic way the Shifty could be used as a simple Sample/Track and Hold module or as a sequential gate.

8HP voltage-controlled ADSR envelope with CV processor - 'New Style'
Notes: The Z4000 NS is a snappy voltage-controlled analogue envelope generator with a built-in CV processor for scaling, inverting, and voltage-controlled deviating of the envelope shape. The Z4000 generates an envelope made of the four classic segments: Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release, in which each segment can be manually set using knobs or dynamically set under voltage control.

Control knobs for the Attack, Decay, and Release segments are scaled. The first 0-50% of the knobs rotation is dedicated to high resolution adjustment in the millisecond range.

The output levels are fully adjustable with signals that can reach up to 10V in either polarity and can be mirrored into the opposite polarity or clipped using the voltage-controlled deviater-scaler. A bi-colour LED indicates intermediate values in both polarities and their crossfade state.

The Attack slope switch allows selection of a logarithmic or exponential curve for the Attack segment. This subtle effect helps further the fine adjustment of the Attack segment slope. A Shoot button is provided to let you fire the envelope manually. The Z4000 also provides a retrigger input allowing you to create legato notes when using a classic keyboard interface.

Going down to nuts and bolts, the Z4000's smoothness and snappiness is made possible by a four-segment active-charge discrete circuit which is an extended version of circuits found in classic two-segment rise/fall transient generators.

24bit, 96k 4HP mono sample player
Notes: ONE brings organic sound and super low latency sample playback to the modular. It differs from other sample players in that it handles the digital audio bits as a continuously manipulated electrical flow, a feature inspired by our analog knowhow. This unique core makes ONE truly integral within the Tiptop percussive modular ecosystem thanks to a lightweight and responsive digital circuit with a very analog feel.

ONE brings a world of colours to the modular right out of the package. We have invited some of the best sound designers in the Industry to create professional sound libraries with content tailored to the unique sonic framework of the modular synthesizer and that fully takes advantage of ONE's unique qualities. To start with, ONE comes with a SD card loaded with a free set of 60 sounds designed by Glitchmachines. More cards are available to purchase separately each containing carefully selected material with up to 256 sound files. Using your own sample libraries or recordings is easy too, just copy 16 or 24bit mono WAV files onto the SD card, pop the card into ONE and go.

ONE offers several modes of operation, with the primary being the super low latency Trigger mode that retrieves audio data off the SD card adding no artificial processing such as click removal, crossfading, EQ or gain normalization. In this mode, it's a highly transparent player up to 24 bit 96kHz with no interpolation of the audio data: what you put in is what you get out. With a delay as low as 0.25ms from the moment the trigger hits, ONE offers harmonically dense, clear and detailed audio with a great rhythmic feel.

ONE handles external CV through a user selectable multifunction jack. Pitch is the main control with two modes available: Free pitch allows for fine tuning of the playback rate, great for adding subtle vibrato or wild tape speed effects; Quantized pitch maps CV to the standard 12 tone system over 3.5 octaves and is ideal for melodic content. CV can also be used to sequence through files off the SD card allowing far more varied sounds from a single source; almost like an entire percussion section behind the slim panel.

Although originally designed to play tightly with our analog drums and envelopes, ONE's rich sound quality encouraged us to make it work in a variety of other applications that are less demanding of sub millisecond timing response. The extra headroom at the core level allows features such as Gated playback, Looping, and Triggering with fades in and out to accommodate different types of sound sources from drum loops to polysynth chords to noise sources and other yet unimagined uses.

ONE offers another useful dimension since it can play CV signals too. Drop in a card with LFO signals, random CV, slopes and envelopes for a whole set of new control and modulation possibilities.

ONE is as simple to use as it is affordable and plays extremely well with its analog cousins - our vision for bringing samples into the modular world.

Eurorack recreation of classic sampler filter with added resonance & voltage control
Notes: 'MUM M8' is an 8hp Eurorack low pass filter building on the filter design used in the classic Akai S950 12 bit sampler with the addition of resonance, voltage control, clipped saturation and a dedicated VCA.

The low pass filter gives the recognisable super smooth vacuum like tone sucking sound which works magic on complex sources. The addition of clipped overdrive and intentionally aggressive self-oscillating resonance compliment the smooth filter core by juxtaposing it into more wasp like territory with acidic squeals and a more gritty sound.
Mum M8 features dual voltage control with attenuation (and inversion) of filter cut off and voltage control of resonance together with dual audio inputs - one of which includes a VCA to with the capability to aid overdriving signals into the filter core.

The filter core is a 6th Order Butterworth switched capacitor type design featuring an analog core but controlled by a high speed digital clock. This produces the characteristic smooth sounding filter but, as with the original S950, has a relatively high minimum cut off as to avoid 'clock bleed' into the filter output from the digital control. This minimum cut of point (and introduction of bleed if required) can be controlled via trimmers on the rear of the module (see calibration chapter). It is not unusual for there still to be some low-level artefacts from the clock present, particularly during filter sweeps - these add to the filters character.

The motivation for the module came from discussing filters in classic samplers with the artist Jack Adams - aka Mumdance. Jack suggested investigating the S950's filter well known as for it use in classic use in early jungle and hardcore. From that point onward Jack provided inspiration, help and feedback in the development of the filter. Big up Mumdance.

Monophonic MIDI/USB interface Eurorack module with outputs for gate, clock, reset & two outputs for CV's
Notes: A-190-4 is the replacement for module A-190-1 which is no longer available. The functions of A-190-1 and A-190-4 are nearly the same (Midi In, Midi Out, CV1, CV2, Gate, Clock, Reset). But the operation of the A-190-4 has been improved because a 3-digit LED display is available. The current values of all parameters (like Midi channel, reference note, clock divider) can be read back and modified by means of up/down buttons. In addition, A-190-4 is equipped with an USB interface and the external +5V supply is no longer available. Consequently, the additional charges for the 5V adapter fall away.

The module width is the same for A-190-1 and A-190-4. In the A-100 basic systems the A-190-1 will be replaced by the A-190-4 from about May 2014.

Important notes:

- The Scale (SCA) and Tune (TUn) parameters remain unchanged when the module is initialized! Otherwise the initialization would overwrite the adjusted values. Because of the tolerances of electrical parts there are no fixed values for SCA and TUn which are valid for all modules. The values for SCA and TUn differ a bit from module to module because of the tolerances of electrical parts. In case that the module has been adjusted totally wrong: typical values are 100 for SCA (coarse) and 55 for TUn (coarse).

- The module comes with installed bus jumpers for CV and Gate. One has to remove the jumpers if e.g. an A-164, A-190-1, A-190-2, A-190-3, A-185-1 or A-185-2 is already connected to the CV and/or gate lines of the same bus board! If the A-190-3 should be used as CV and gate source for the A-100 bus the CV and gate connections of other CV/gate sources to the A-100 bus have to be removed. Otherwise short circuits are made between the outputs of the CV or gate transmitters!

- The gate level of the A-190-3 can be changed from +5V to +12V. For this the jumper on JP10A (behind the CV Note socket, labelled "GATE 5V JP10A") has to be removed and installed to JP10B (behind the 16 pin bus connector, labelled "GATE 12V JP10B").

- The module is a USB device or slave in USB mode. It has no USB host function (like computers or laptops with type A USB connectors).

Each filter has available a separate FM input as well as an Audio Input and Output. The FM input is typically connected to the output of the associated envelope generator (e.g. A-141-4).
The envelope amount for all four filters is controlled by the FM knob and the CVFM input by means of four built-in VCAs, which are controlled by the FM control and CVFM input. This allows also voltage control of the envelope amounts.

In addition common frequency modulation for all filters is possible (e.g. by an LFO). For this the CVF input with attenuator can be used. The range of the audio input level control (L) allows also clipping/distortion with typical A-100 audio levels
(e.g. from A-111-4) at the filter inputs. Even this parameter is voltage controllable as well as the resonance (Q).
Application: polyphonic patches (four VCFs with same parameters).

Voltage controlled rhythm generator module
Notes: The Numeric Repetitor is a rhythmic gate generator that describes rhythms as binary numbers and then multiplies by other numbers. With a concept similar to the Zularic Repetitor, the Numeric Repetitor is a voltage controlled rhythm generator.

Clock is sent to the Beat input. With the Prime potentiometer or a CV you can select one rhythmical pattern based on 16 mathematic factors. With a switch you can select between 2 sets of patterns, X and Y.

Notes: The SD909 adapts the iconic TR-909 snare drum and noise generator for use in the Eurorack modular synthesizer format. We painstakingly tested the module in our lab to sound like a fresh machine coming off of the assembly line back in the 80s. On top of the original circuit, we have added new features that expand the palette of what can be produced with this analog circuit.

The sound of the SD909 consists of two main sections: the binary noise generator and two modulated triangle oscillators. The oscillators provide the low end punch while the noise makes up the upper sonic spectrum, resulting in a combination that makes the 909 snare sound so rich. In the SD909 module the noise generator and oscillators are variable and voltage controlled, which pushes the circuit beyond its original boundaries offering new sounds as well as many variations of the original tone. The panel has markings to guide setting the knobs to reproduce the snare sound of the vintage machine.

Just like the other drums in this series, the SD909’s high-powered output gain stage allows further enhancement of the sound through distortion and clipping. The module was designed, tuned and tested to sound like the crash and ride sounds from a 909 fresh off the factory line. The sound circuits use a combination of low-fi 6 bit sound samples that pass through a series of analog elements that provide envelope and filtering to the source sound.
TipTop Audio enhanced the circuits by adding manual and voltage controllable tuning to each voice which result in a wide sound range: from hard industrial sound at the low end to the original crash/ride sounds to brilliant HihHts at high settings.

Like other TipTop drum voices also the Cymbl909 has high output level, allowing you to further enhance the sound by distortion and clipping. Play dynamically with the volume of the drum sounds with the Accent parameter, whose CV input is normalized to the gate input. 2 channel low-pass gate with integrated mixer - 10HP
Notes: DYNAMIX is a fast two-channel Low Pass Gate, dynamics manager and mixer, the core of which is derived from our 0-COAST synthesizer. The LEVEL parameter provides simultaneous voltage control over the Amplitude and Frequency content of audio signals, operating as a VCF/A. The DYNMC parameter accepts audio signals or control voltages and converts them into a signal that may increase or decrease the LEVEL parameter thus allowing for Expansion, Compression and Ducking. The summing section is complete with an AUXiliary INput allowing for the chaining of multiple MIX units (modDemix, Optomix and RxMx modules) to create large, non-centralized mixes.

The DYNAMIX is functionally similar to the Optomix LPG: a fundamental element in the sound of West Coast Synthesis, however, rather than using the Vactrol component that gives the Optomix its characteristic "slow" sound, the DYNAMIX circuit utilizes transistors in a topology that has more in common with East Coast instruments. This combination of West Coast technique and East Coast circuitry is No-Coast synthesis at its best, allowing the Low Pass Gate to be used in tandem with an extremely important East-Coast synthesis circuit: the ADSR, a 4-stage Envelope generator we call CONTOUR.

Tidal modulator signal generator Eurorack synth module - 14HP wide
Notes: Tides is all about waves that go up and down, from minute-long cycles to audio rates... This module is Mutable Instruments' unique take on the looping AD envelope generator - pushing this well-known trope to unknown territories.

The core of the module is a digital asymmetric triangle function generator, which can be used in AD and AR modes (for envelope generation), or looping (as a VC-LFO or VC-DO). The triangle generator is followed by a wavetable waveshaper providing linear, exponential, logarithmic, sinusoidal, or arc-sinusoidal shapes for the A and D segments. Then, a second processor applies either a 2-pole low-pass filter to the waveform, smoothing its sharp edges; or a rubbery wavefolder, adding kinks and "bounces" to the waveform. Because Tides has been designed from the ground up to work at audio rates with minimal aliasing, and because all its parameters are under voltage control, it can be used as a unique self-contained synth voice.

Tides' advanced features include:

- Output level CV input (digital VCA).
- Dual outputs: standard unipolar waveform, and "double-shot" waveform with a positive spike during the ascent and a negative spike during the descent. At audio rate, both of them have a different sound.
- Accurate V/Oct tracking with straightforward calibration procedure.
- Freeze input to temporarily hold the waveform.
- Clock input to lock onto a multiple or fraction of a trigger sequence... or audio signal, PLL-style.

Dual analog VCA and 2-pole VCF, with digital control path - 12HP size
Notes: Streams provides two channels of extremely flexible signal dynamics manipulation.

Each channel consists of an analog voltage-controlled filter and amplifier (VCFA). The response curve of the amplifier section is continuously variable from exponential to linear. The amplifier gain is directly controllable from a CV input, through an attenuator. But what makes Streams truly unique is the multi-purpose EXCITE input. The signal routed to this input is analyzed by a micro-controller and translated into internal control voltages for the VCFA, turning Streams into a very versatile signal contouring tool:

Envelope generator
The EXCITE input can work as a trigger input, triggering an internal AD or AR envelope routed to the gain and the filter cutoff (in variable amount). With only 6-HP of space, you can shape an oscillator or noise source into a full-bodied sound.

Vactrol curve generator
The EXCITE input is processed by a digital model of a resistive opto-isolator (Vactrol), controlling the gain and the filter cutoff (in variable amount). The digital emulation allows the modification of properties of opto-isolators - such as response time - which are otherwise difficult to control. The virtual vactrol response can be either optimized for processing CVs, or triggers (for "plucked" sounds).

Amplitude and frequency content follower
The envelope and cutoff of the EXCITE signal is measured, and applied to the signal on the VCFA input.

Compressor/limiter
Streams' VCF is disabled, and the VCA is used to control the dynamics of the input signal. An intuitive control scheme allows the compressor to be used either for peak reduction/limiting operation; or for boosting signal levels with soft-limiting. The EXCITE input can be used as a sidechain.

The A-154 is used to replace the control unit of one or two A-155, i.e. the section marked "Control" with Start / Stop / Step / Reset buttons and inputs in the upper left corner of the A-155 front panel. If the A-154 is used to control the A-155 the control section of the A-155 is put out of action.

These are the features of the A-154:

Several running modes: forward, backward, pendulum, random, CV controlled step addressing. All modes are available as loop or one-shot.

If the running mode "CV Controlled Step Address" is selected the First Step section is used to determine the active sequencer step. Consequently manual and voltage controlled selection (with attenuator) of the active step is possible: the active step can be set by hand with the first step manual control and then modulated by an external control voltage (e.g. LFO, Random, S&H, Theremin, Light CV source, Joy Stick) at the first step CV input (with attenuator).

An internal voltage controlled clock generator with manual and CV control (with attenuator) is available. The output of the clock generator is displayed with a LED and is used as sequencer clock provided that no external clock signal is connected to the Clock In socket (normalled socket). If the CV input of the Clock section is connected to one of the analogue outputs of the sequencer the time for each step can be set separately. Even jumps (or skipping) will be possible as we will introduce the feature that a very short clock pulse will be generated if the control voltage exceeds a certain value. For example the gate row of the A-155 can be used to obtain skipping of steps: the gate output simply has to be connected to the CV input of the A-154 clock generator. If the corresponding switch of the A-155 is set correspondingly in the gate row the step will be skipped.

Manual and voltage controlled (with attenuator) pulse width (PW) of the clock signal. This features can be used to obtain a different gate length for each step: e.g. one of the CV outputs of the A-155 can be used to control the PW. With a PW control voltage coming from a LFO/random/S&H the gate length will change automatically. CV coming from Theremin A-178, ribbon controller A-198, light controlled CV A-179, joy stick A-174 are other ways to control the gate length.

8/16 step mode: A toggle switch us used to select 8 or 16 steps. The "16 step" mode requires two A-155 and one or more voltage controlled switches (e.g. A-150-1 or A-150-8). The voltage controlled switches are controlled by the "A3" output of the A-154. This output remains "low" as long as the active step is in the range 1...8 and turns to "high" in the range 9...16. The voltage controlled switches are used to switch between the CV/trigger/gates outputs of the first A-155 (step 1...8) and the second A-155 (step 9...16). In the A-154 user's manual the corresponding patch is shown.

If two A-155 are used they can work in parallel (8 steps) or serial (16 steps). The 8/16 steps switch determines if the 8 step mode (one A-155 or two A-155 in parallel) or the 16 step mode (two A-155 serial) is chosen. Both modes work with CV controlled step addressing too (see below). In 8 step mode only the steps 1...8 are addressed, in 16 step mode the steps 1...16. For serial operation an additional VC switch (A-150) is required - as mentioned above.

A high level at the Start input or operating the Start button starts the sequence from the momentarily addressed step. Not working in "CV controlled step address" mode.

A high level at the Stop input or operating the Stop button stops the sequence (the last active step remains addressed). Not working in "CV controlled step address" mode.

Quad AD-generator with four independent Attack-Decay envelopes - 28HP
Notes: Module A-143-1 is a complex envelope generator that consists of Attack/Decay generators. For the complex envelope generator the four units are daisy-chained, i.e. the preceding unit triggers the following unit. The four units can be used even as four separate AD generators (switch position AD) or AD-type LFOs (switch position).

Details: Module A-143-1 contains four separate attack/decay type envelope generators. Each unit can be switched into a free running mode (LFO mode). The LFO mode differs in several points from a regular LFO (like A-145, A-146 or A-147): The slopes are exponential - in contrast to linear slopes of a normal LFO, and the frequency is defined by both controls. The attack control defines the time of the rising slope, the decay control the falling slope.

Each unit has available a comparator that compares the AD output voltage with a manually adjustable threshold and switches the corresponding comparator output (Cp 1...4) to "high" as soon as the AD output voltage goes in the decay phase below this value. The comparator output is normalled to the trigger input of the next stage via the switching contact of the trigger input socket. Consequently the first unit triggers the second, the second triggers the third and so on.

Each AD generator is equipped with a Polarizer (look at the Voltage Controlled Polarizer A-133 concerning details about the polarizer function) and a mixer that adds up all polarizer outputs. This allows to add up all AD/LFO output signals inverting or non-inverting with adjustable level to the mix output. Additionally a single output (Env 1...4) is available for each unit.

If the trigger input of unit 1 is controlled by a normal gate signal (e.g. from a keyboard resp. MIDI-to-CV/Gate interface) one obtains a very complex envelope signal at the mix output. The signal contains 8 segments controlled by Attack 1, Decay 1, Attack 2, Decay 2, Attack 3, Decay 3, Attack 4 and Decay 4. The transition between the stages (i.e. when the following AD generator is triggered) is controlled by threshold knob. The positive or negative contribution of each unit to the mix signal is adjusted with the Mixing Polarizer control. If the trigger input of unit 1 is controlled by the comparator output of unit 4 one obtains a 8 stage LFO.

The single AD outputs can be used to control VCAs or VCFs that open one after another corresponding to the AD signals (a little bit similar to the Shepard generator A-191).

The default-connection between the four units (CPn = Trig.n+1) can be interrupted by patching cables into the trigger inputs. Consequently the four units can be used as separate AD generators or LFOs. In any case the mix signal is available (e.g. mix of four AD generators or LFOs with adjustable level and sign).

In the LFO mode the comparator output serves as LFO rectangle output with adjustable pulse width (= threshold control).

Each unit is equipped with a separate LED display for envelop and comparator output. The shortest attack/decay time is about 5 ms, the longest attack/decay times are about 3 seconds (attack) / 10 seconds (decay). By changing the value of a capacitor the shortest time can be modified (details can be found here: A100_Capacitors.htm).

The sketch at the bottom of the page shows the module principle with 4 daisy-chained AD units (as predetermined by the normalled sockets), that are mixed with the integrated polarizing mixer.
