The imprint was apparently established to deliver seven-inch singles showcasing a variety of much-loved vintage rap hits. Review: Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats are Galaxy Sound Co's most experienced editors and they prove that again here with another sure to sell out pair of supreme funk, soul and jazz fusion tunes. You might have never heard the original a-side here but you sure will recognise its chords from a million and one other tunes that have sampled it. It's a lost classic that melts the heart with its gentleness, killer soulful vocals and subtle jazz-funk greatness. The flip comes is another one that has been heavily sampled and is a drawn out and sensuous funk jam with some mad synth work and seductive drumming. This is one gorgeous 7", make no mistake.

What develops is a distinctive style typified by a combination of ethereal sonics and cheeky, memorable instrumental hooks, only set to a variety of beats that reference and indeed fuse the plethora of different dance genres that have sprung up since the acid house revolution if the mid-80s. So we get everything from the electro-tainted 'X' to 'Rever', where an African choir floats over a subtle deep house shuffle and 'Saku', where UKG bass pressure and skippy beats provide a hypnotic background for Clara La San's sweet but ghostly voice.

Review: Hot on the heels of his first outing on Constant Sound, rising star Kepler (real name Matthew Farrow) makes his first appearance on Sukhumvit. The Retro Future EP is well named, because you'll find plenty of vintage influences and good, old-fashioned inspirations amongst the four tracks on show. Bustling opener 'Pickled' adds mid-90s Korg M1 organ sounds, saucer-eyed ambient house chords and Orbital style melodies to an energetic, non-stop groove, while 'Out of Time' offers a similar blend of 1990s house sounds and contemporary club weight. Over on the reverse, 'Groove Breakfast' joins the dots between Italian piano house and mid-90s NYC house, before Kepler rounds things off with the sub-heavy snap and celestial synthesizer riffs of US garage-influenced roller 'In The Loft'.

Review:  Party days can't be that far away now, and Cardiology continue to have you covered with some of the choicest slabs in the edit game. This time it's C Da Afro on the buttons, shining bright after a massively productive 2020 in which he slipped out no less than five records. He's clearly not short on material to get busy on the slice and dice with, given the quality of the gear he's presenting on this new 12". As you'd expect for Cardiology the tracks aren't that easily trainspotted, ranging from the insanely catchy disco delights of 'Hustle' to the housed-up funk of 'Hold Up'. It's serious music for serious heads, but with that universal party starting appeal that any self-respecting disco edit should have.

  4. Who Knows (VIP mix) (4:33)
Review: Rhythm Vibe keep the old-skool garage house flavour alive and well on this absolutely essential drop from Herb Rhythm, riding the kind of uptempo 4x4 flex that joins the dots between the scene's house roots and the speed garage that came after. The A side kicks off with the impeccable 'Don't Go', which rides the same vocal sample as FCL's deep house burner 'Lets Go' from 2010. Ease Up George gets busy on a remix of the track which injects some classy dubby shimmers and 2-step flex into the scenario, and it really works. 'U Want Wot?' is another tight and bumping joint with rich chords and oodles of soul, while 'Who Knows (VIP Mix)' gets things swinging good and proper without getting losing the smoother vibe that hangs over the whole EP.

Review: James Ruskin and Mark Broom are tow of the most iconic names in techno. They are a dream team pairing and prove that once more with this collaborative four tracker on Ruskin's legendary Blueprint label. 'Pr1' is lithe but muscular, with rubbery kick drums pounding away beneath frazzled stabs that all work you into a state of hypnosis. 'Ocs' is another subtle and supple fusion of bendy synths and well cushioned kicks and 'Tkn' heads off down a loopy melodic minimal rabbit hole. 'Sn7' is the most rave of the lot with its undulating synths bringing texture to more cantering techno drums. Classy, effective, essential.

Scottish producer Vince Watson, now based in the 'Dam, is he man behind the originals, but first to flip is Joe Claussell the dub master who brings real spirituality to his work, In his hands, 'Progress' is a piano laced, deep and sine tingling house love affair, while Yoruba master Osunlade layers in his bright synths and layers of percussion to take you to a higher plane. After Manoo, Poker Flat boss Steve Bug links with longtime collaborator Langenberg for the most tech-edged version.

Review: If you're on the lookout for some hedonistic, party-starting fare, we'd highly recommend this bonus seven-inch from Ogogo's ongoing Oonop Drops series. The theme is "ruff cuts", with the Ruffcats setting the agenda on side A, joining forces with Allergies' mic man Andy Cooper for the jazzy funk breaks-meets-scratch-happy-hip-hop heaviness that is the Slick Walk remix of 'On The Run'. That comes accompanied on side A by a typically tight and heavy instrumental version. Over on the flip, 6th Generation take over with 'Remember Us', a jazzy, deep and bass-heavy instrumental hip-hop number of the type that Grand Central Records' used to champion, before Clockwerk and Birdmoves wrap things up via the smoky trip-hop head-nod that is 'Portisheadshop'.

Review: Cardiology get serious yet again on their fourth outing with The Owl taking a break from his self-titled label to follow up February's Universal Funk with some further sizzling edits. First up is a twist on Mad Dog Fire Department's classic party starter "Cosmic Funk", which gets a tasteful house thump to amp up the dancefloor impact of the track. "Ms Brown" is a big singalong belter with a beat to match, while "We Do It" smooths things out with a slinky vibe that translates well to another forthright 4/4 bump. "Fresh Groove" finishes the record off in a steamy, hazy groove that will take the dancers deeper in, without a doubt.

Review: Gilles Peterson's obsession with Cuba is long running and well documented over various compilations from across the years. His latest focusses on Experiments in Latin Music from 1975 to 85 and the title suggests it will be the first of an ongoing series on Soul Jazz, compiled in collaboration with Stuart Baker. Across three vibrant sides of vinyl all manner of grooves are offered up, some more traditional, some bravely out there, all drawing on the jazz, funk, Brazilian tropicalia and disco - mixed with classic Latin and salsa - which made it to the island in the 70s.

Review: Nail is back on 89:Ghost with more of his sublime trippers delights as Smoke. This is the UK tech house don at his deepest, eking out a perfectly fluid strain of dub-inflected grooves to take you further in and farther out. Lead track 'DBSDUB2' is awash with gorgeous chords and strung out soul licks, all underpinned by a simply perfect groove. 'BAQDUB' uses a more broken thread of percussion to accentuate the rhythm, while 'HOTARU' keeps things more tightly clipped without losing that shimmering veneer. 'BAUCH3' is the more ambient of the cuts on this 12", taking the aesthetics of the other three and jettisoning off into pure dubbed out bliss.

Review: Carl Craig and Moritz Von Oswald, two of techno's undisputed legends, team up on this fine release for the former's esteemed Planet E imprint. The first production to emerge from a series of studio sessions in Berlin and Detroit (and with more to come in the future) 'Attenuator' was originally produced together, but this two sided single sees them deliver their own distinct take on the material. The Carl Craig version on the A side is as epic as you could imagine from the veteran of the Motor City's second wave - proper 'hi-tech jazz' if we've ever heard it. On the flip, the Mortiz Von Oswald dub gets deep, dark and introspective, much in the vein of his seminal Basic Channel material.

When its next experiment resulted in the unlikely meeting of Running Back's Gerd Janson and PETS Recordings duo Catz 'N' Dogz, they knew they were in for a rare treat. Taking the very best of classic house motifs, mixed in with neon-lit nu-disco thrills, 'Modern Romance' is a tune we can expect to hear burning up living room dancefloors throughout the early part of 2021, with its infectious vocal and Mark Barrott (International Feel) helping out with some piano work. Handy instrumental and club mix by Janson included.

For a first release by the artists behind it, it is impressively authentic and steeped in old school rawness. Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

After Funkyjaws' opening missive, DJ Craft's Craft Music label has invited Lazovic to throw down his bold and brassy take on soundsystem dynamics in a modern context. Review: Straight out of Bristol comes a brand-new label from Tom Friend, the avuncular vinyl obsessive behind the Friendly Records store and bar. The inaugural release on Friendly Recordings fittingly comes from a local talent, promising newcomer Claude Cooper. What's on offer very much taps into Bristol's post-punk history, with excellent A-side 'Tangerine Dreams' sounding like the sax-wielding mutant offspring of Rip, Rig & Panic and Maximum Joy - all bold, rubbery double bass, frenetic breakbeats and delay-laden horn solos. B-side 'Two Mile Hill', which was named in honour of a road in Bristol near Cooper's house, offers an extra-percussive and moodier variation on a similar theme. In a word: terrific!

Review: Here's a welcome surprise: a reissue of one of the most revered records in the back catalogue of sadly departed Sheffield deep house imprint Toko. This 1997 gem is actually an all-star affair, with Klarky Cat (a reference to legendary satirical show Brass Eye) being a collaboration between Chris Duckenfield, Toko bosses Alec Greenhough and Paul Ingall (better known as Attaboy) and influential, overlooked Manchester producer Si Brad. In. its original form, "Gumbo" mixes the wavy, loved-up dreaminess of classic deep house with the organ sounds of U.S garage and the swinging, occasionally glitchy drums of early UK tech-house. It comes backed with a darker, chunkier and more foreboding rework (the mesmerising "Blooty Mix"), and the bright, acid-flecked sunrise giddiness of rather good bonus track "Custard Gannet".

Review: On his previous 12" singles for Joe's Bakery and People Must Jam, Sebastian Graetz AKA Basso has proved adept at crafting really rather good, Balearic-minded re-edits out of odd, obscure and overlooked records he's found on record shopping trips. He's at it again on Drum Chums Volume One, flitting between chiming, sun-kissed, synth-laden mid-80s jazz-funk-fusion ('Do Stay For Breakfast'), delightfully camp and borderline cheesy disco ('Soft Choppers'), sparse and delay-laden synth-pop eccentricity (the hard-to-describe but rather brilliant 'Simple Stroll'), and the kind of cosmic, otherworldly synthesizer fare that arguably sounds way more inspired now than it did when it was originally released (the early '80s Tangerine Dream style fizz of 'Breaking Bread').

As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

Review: The Alien Communications universe expands with addition of a new sister imprint Space Dust. It kicks off with Bolam's adventurous Suspended Animation EP, a trip though space powered by a stylish mix of electro and techno. 'Florion Heights' sets off on the vogue with slippery drums and synths and nice cosmic pads that lead to a euphoric crescendo. 'Comfort Zone' has a more pensive and thoughtful vibe thanks to the suspensory pads and last of all, 'The Mothership' slows right down on churning drums with hopeful rays of melody shine through.

Review: Belgian superstar Amelie Lens launched her latest label Exhale with a deathly offering of techno across 15 tracks. Now a sampler from the compilation makes its way onto vinyl with no letting up from start to finish. Paris-based Francois X stands out for his tune 'Clarity Bell' which is mechanical and hard hitting but also elastic and inviting. Grace Dahl' 'Vermilion Empire' is all retro future cosmic battle sounds, DYEN's 'Fantasy' is a brilliant happy hardcore update with evenly pitched up vocal and Mehen wrecks your head with 'Broken Whisper.'

Review: The Gooey Editz label quickly follows up its first soon to sell out missive with this new serving of today disco edits. It's the Frankfurt producer Siggatunez who is behind this one once again and opens up with 'Rain', a smooth and soulful groove with nice tight drumming and a rich vocal. 'If It Ain't' is a slower more, sensual groove with big horns and 'A Star' then brings the funky, noodling jazz with plenty of freeform expression. 'Fun' closes out with a shimmering and deep beat that gets right under the skin and layers up lush chords.

Review: On its initial release in 1994, "Sceneries Not Songs" became deep house legend Larry Heard's first solo album under his given name. At the time, it caused quite a stir on the electronic underground, in part because it saw the Chicago veteran showcase the depth and variety of his musical personality whilst retaining the emotive dreaminess and jazzy inflections that had always been a big part of his work. As this much-needed vinyl reissue proves, it remains a stunning album. Highlights include the sparkling synthesizers, slo-mo grooves and twinkling pianos of "Tahiti Dusk", the classic Heard deep house warmth of "Midnight Movement", the head-nodding trip-hop-goes-ambient jazz flex of "Summertime Breeze" and the luscious beauty of bonus cut "Question of Time".

  1. Nation Song (3:32)
  2. Groovin' At The Night Club (4:42)
Review: Burton Inc is perhaps not one of the better-known soul bands of the late 1970s. Formed by married couple Charles and Barbara Burton and featuring their son Tire amongst the backing musicians, the band recorded and released one album, 1976's L.A Will Make You Pay $$$, on their own private press imprint. It's from that set that these two tracks are taken. A-side 'Nation Song' is a glossy, slow-motion call for global unity featuring the twin attractions of incredible horn arrangements and spacey synthesizers (not to mention a fine lead vocal from Barbara), while flipside 'Groovin At The Night Club' is a slightly more up-tempo affair rich in jazzy guitar flourishes, fluid bass guitar and more incredible horn sounds.

Raw diesel powered breaks with every rave echo you could ask for. 'Neutronics' hits with a cold slice of electro in the synth department, 'Come Wid It' hits with that stripped back technoid sound Bassbin Twins were so good at back in the day, 'Disengage' is all about the drum edits and that metallic, futuristic Botchit style while 'Iron Fist' closes the EP with a drum funk KO punch that's so hard you'll forget all about lockdown.

Review:  While previous instalments of Jazzman's essential Spiritual Jazz series have focused on killer cuts and rare gems from the past (specifically material recorded between the 1950s and '80s), the thirteenth volume shines a light on what's happening right now. It's stretched across two double-albums, with this first part hitting spot from the word go. The collection's greatest strength is how it manages to represent the many different directions that spiritual jazz has gone in the 21st century. For proof, compare and contrast the drowsy, bluesy and smoky 'Lizard Waltz' by Benjamin Herman, the jazz psychedelia of Idris Ackmoor and the Pyramids' 'An Angel Fell', the Latin lounge-jazz flex of Jimi Tenor and Kabukabu's 'Suite Meets' and the low-down, bass-driven brilliance of Gnawa' by drummer-turned-beatmaker Maya McCracken.

Review: Rupa Biswas' 1982 debut Disco Jazz has long been a favourite of dusty-fingered diggers with a healthy bank balance and a penchant for the quirky. All four tracks are cheery, charming and superior to many "Bollywood disco" records produced in the same period. The sunny disco-boogie of 'Moja Bhari Moja' is followed on side A by the delightfully eccentric, bass-powered AOR-disco/funk-rock fusion of "East West Shuffle" and the effortlessly Balearic cheeriness of 'Aaj Shanibar'. Best of all, though, is the exotic and intoxicating flipside cut 'Ayee Morshume Be-Reham Duniya' which expertly joins the dots between cosmic rock and Balearic disco grooves for 16 spellbinding minutes.

Unknown to most and originating from Frankfurt am Main, Electrodefender has been tirelessly working away for over 20 years. And those credentials shine though in his fantastic new 12" for Childhood Intelligence. It's a real adventure with a melancholic start before 'In Old Times' mines a rueful and melodic electro vibe and 'The European Knight' then casts itself adrift in a cosmic universe. Mood is always high on this artists agenda and he delves into contemplation on 'Why' and joy on 'Ffm Graffiti Scene,'amongst others.

Review: When he made his debut in the summer of 2019 with the rather good Simple Minds EP on Marginal Returns, Sohrab had the look of a techno artist with bags of potential. This belated sequel for Undersound Recordings only confirms that first impression. For proof, check opener 'The Fool', a bouncy and otherworldly chunk of futurist techno in which Middle Eastern style synthesizer melodies and intergalactic electronics rise above bubbly acid bass and Motor City techno drums. It's the EP's most ear-catching moment, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the 12", with highlights including the fizzing, subtly EBM-influenced thrust of 'Resolution', and the breakbeat-driven ambient techno psychedelia of 'Digital Bliss'.

Review: Strap in for a super sweet ride through tuneful techno and soulful machine sounds on this double 12" from Prince de Takicardie. It manages to be both fresh and futuristic but also nicely tinged with the old school values we all love. 'The Birth Of Love' could be an old Two Lone Swordsman cut thanks to its gorgeous leads, while 'Dramatic Battle' is a more dense and jacked up techno cracker. 'The Pirate's House' reaches into electro territory with its super speedy grooves and warped melodies and 'Open That Door!!! (Sex Waitting mix)' then gets nice and sleazy.

'Panic In Detroit' (Goos Life Mix) is a mid tempo jam that will warm up early evening floors. 'Final Fronteer' (Brain Block mix) is a deep and cuddly cut with hip swinging claps and splashy hi hats and last of all comes the best fo the lot, 'Hard Rain.' It has smooth drum loops that rock back and forth and draw you in beneath balmy cosmic pads and far-sighted sense of melancholy. This is tasteful, subtle dance music for the heads.

Review: Last year, Kuniyuki Takahashi brilliantly blended his past and present on Newwave Project, a set that superbly fused his deep and emotional house and techno sound with raw and grimey nods to EBM, proto-techno, industrial and '80s alternative. Here, two tracks from that inspired set by Houndstooth regular Call Super. First he tackles "Newwave Project #2", wrapping dreamy, stretched-out chords, far-sighted synthesizer melodies and dubbed-out electronics around a rubbery, jazz-flecked deep house groove. Next, he turns his attention to "Puzzle", delivering a breathlessly loved-up interpretation rich in trippy, alien-sounding chords, shimmering electronic sweeps and huggable deep house grooves. It's stunningly beautiful, all told, with the remixer's use of glistening guitar passages only adding to the picturesque mood.

Review: Jesse James links up with the Soul Junction label to offer up a previously unreleased version of his '(The Girl In) Clinton Park' which is best known from its 1974 version, recorded by Masterplan. The original was written at a time three years previous when James was disillusioned with major labels but undeterred. It was also thought to be lost until the artist was digging through his possessions during the covid-19 lockdown and happened upon it. It's a lush bit of happy soul music that will brighten up any day. Flip over for his cover version of the Terry Callier/Larry Wade composition 'Just As Long As We're In Love'.

Review: Tramp Records' latest reissue is, somewhat unsurprisingly, of another exceedingly deep release. The two-part 'Mustang' was the sole release by jazz quartet The New Philadelphians, and originally came out on the tiny Quaker City Jazz imprint sometime around 1968. The A-side 'Part 1' version is particularly potent, seeing the band's saxophonist and organist trading solos and riffs over a bustling rhytyhm and blues-goes-jazz-rock groove. The second part is, if anything, even sweatier and more club-ready, featuring as it does the kind rising horn licks and wild organ solos that always set temperatures racing out on the dancefloor.
